Dear Friends,
On behalf of the Mississippi Bandmasters Association
Executive Board, it is my pleasure to welcome you to
Natchez and the 77th Annual State Band Clinic. It is our
hope that you will find this weekend beneficial in many ways.
To the students in attendance, congratulations on your
selection to this prestigious event. Over the past 77 years,
literally thousands of young people just like you have
had experiences like this that have impacted them for
a lifetime. Many of the people that you may see this
weekend have made lifetime friendships at this event.
Additionally, our hope for you is that you get to experience music making in ways you
never have before. We also hope you will take your experiences home with you in an
effort to lead your home band to higher levels. Your directors think very highly of you
to nominate you for this clinic. Thank them by making the most of this opportunity. We
also hope you will take time to meet with our exhibitors during your break times and
discover things that may make you a better musician and increase your love of music.
Let me also encourage our membership to be the most gracious of hosts to the
exhibitors, clinicians, and other visitors to this unique event. While we enjoy this time
to unwind and renew friendships, let us also remember that this is a weekend of
opportunity. Please take every opportunity to meet with our exhibitors and hear what
they have to offer. Make a special effort to hear what our presenters suggest to us in
an effort to make our jobs easier and our students more productive. Take time to lend
an ear to a younger teacher who may need your particular brand of expertise.
We offer a special welcome to our guest clinicians, exhibitors, ensembles, and
conductors. The directors and students of our state are deeply indebted to you for
your expertise and your willingness to share with us. If there is a way we can make
your stay a more enjoyable one, please do not hesitate to ask.
Thank you to the Natchez Convention Center, the Natchez Grand Hotel, the Natchez
Chamber of Commerce, and all the good people here in Natchez for your hospitality
and support. A special thanks goes out to Mr. and Mrs. Rigdon for making this clinic run
smoothly; to my wife, Andrea, and son, Lee, for understanding the commitment and
time required to serve this great association; to my partners in crime, the executive
board, for having my back; and to the body of the MBA, thank you for entrusting me
with this great responsibility. As I retire from band directing, I am confident that this
facet of education is standing on solid ground due to the capacity of knowledge,
comradery, and skill set of the great band directors of Mississippi.

young people. The Mississippi High School Activities Association wants to enhance

MISSISSIPPI BAND DIRECTOR OF THE YEAR
TONI REECE
Toni Reece is the Director of Bands in the Aberdeen School District and is in her 30th
year of teaching. She received her Bachelor of Music Education degree from the
University of Mississippi. She started her teaching career at S.D. Lee High School with
Thad Mullins. In 1993 she started at Aberdeen School District with her husband, Ernie
Reece and her dearest colleague Kenneth Clay. Ms. Reece teaches grades 6-12,
and directs Marching Band, Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, Indoor Percussion and
Indoor Guard groups. She has served on the Mississippi Bandmasters board, National
Federation of High School Activities Board, Northeast Band Directors Board. She has
received Outstanding Young Band Directors Award, George Henry Schultz Award,
Who’s Who Among American High School Teachers, Star Teacher at Aberdeen
High School. Ms. Reece is proud to have had 35 student teachers throughout her
career and is assisting the Aberdeen School District with mentoring new teachers
in a new program. She is most proud of her two daughters, Nikki an industrial interior
designer that resides in Nashville, and Cori that is completing her Music Degree from
Mississippi State University.
Always be passionate about teaching, it is a calling not just a job, students are
like seeds they must have strong roots to succeed! And expect more from your
students on a daily basis! And lastly, never throw away a child, you never know what
potential was there!!

OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTOR
Thomas V. Fraschillo, DMA, has served as catalyst and
mentor for the teaching profession for 46 years. His
high standards of performance have had a sustained
influence on ensembles at every level, and his
performances serve as models in both the professional
or academic arena. Through his recordings, The Music
of Luigi Zaninelli and The University of Southern Mississippi
Wind Ensemble LIVE IN ITALY (recorded in Italy), and
his publishing, conducting, and lecturing in the United
States, Europe, Asia, and Australia, he is considered an
international musician/scholar. His publications, translations
from the original Italian of Alessandro Vessella’s Studi
di strumentazione (Instrumentation Studies), and La
THOMAS V. FRASCHILLO Tecnica dell’orchestra contemporanea (The Technique
of Contemporary Orchestration) by Alfredo Casella and Vittorio Mortari, both published
by BMG Ricordi, Milan, have put his name in libraries of the entire English speaking world.
As a writer/scholar Dr. Fraschillo is a contributing editor to the American Grove Dictionary,
2nd Edition and serves as a frequent conductor and lecturer in Italy. His most recent
appearances in Italy have been with La Banda dell’esercito/The Italian Army Band in
Rome. One of his most significant engagements with them signaled a very important
milestone for the Italian Army in that Dr. Fraschillo was the first American-born conductor
to have been invited to appear in a public performance by what is considered Italy’s
most prestigious military concert band. The concert with Dr. Fraschillo conducting was
the opening concert of the International Festival in Spoleto,“The Festival of Two Worlds,
Festival dei due mondi.” His appearance was enormously significant for conductors
of bands in that the opening performance featured such international artists as Gian
Carlo Menotti, the renowned composer, the Orchestra and Giuseppe Verdi Chorus of
Milan, and the Italian actress, Claudia Cardinale. Finally, in Italy Dr. Fraschillo often serves
as a member of the judging panel for many international festivals, most notably the
Concorso Internazionale di Composizione “R. Marenco” di Novi Ligure, and the Concorso
Internazionale di Composizione Originale per Banda di Corciano.
Aside from Dr. Fraschillo’s work in Europe, he is often engaged throughout the continents
of Asia, and Australia. The Melbourne, Australia, Summer Youth Music Program has invited
Dr. Fraschillo to be their guest conductor for their summer session for five years. In addition
the Australian Band and Orchestra Directors Association has invited him to lecture and
to adjudicate at their large ensemble festivals. Dr. Fraschillo’s other work in the Pacific Rim
includes having served as clinician and guest conductor of the Central Armed Forces
Band in Singapore and as conductor of the Singapore All-College Band sponsored by
the Wind Band Association of Singapore. In 2009 and 2010 Dr. Fraschillo served as Artistic
Director for the weeklong Winter Band Festival at Disney, Hong Kong.
Dr. Fraschillo has recently been recognized by election to the National Band
Association’s Hall of Fame of Distinguished Conductors, a distinct honor that recognizes
his lengthy career as a public school, university, and professional conductor.
Dr. Fraschillo devoted a significant amount of his career to the education of young people
in Mississippi. For example his ten-year tenure at Meridian High School was highlighted by
a performance at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious
music event for wind and string educators. The invitation was only the second to have
been given to a band from Mississippi. Dr. Fraschillo’s Meridian students obtained successes
not before reached, for he taught and helped place the first African-American students in
the Mississippi All-State Band. Not only were they among the first minority members, but they
were also the first African-Americans to attain the very highest positions in the group.
Dr. Fraschillo has attained a significant level in the realm of international leadership
in that he serves as a past president of the prestigious American Bandmasters
Association, past president of the world’s largest organization for band directors, the
National Band Association, and President of the CBDNA Southern Division.
PHI BETA MU HALL OF FAME
In 1990 the Delta chapter of Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters Fraternity and
the Mississippi Bandmasters Association formed a Hall of Fame to honor our most
outstanding retired band directors. The membership of the Delta chapter felt that it
was most appropriate to recognize the efforts of these “legendary” music directors.

A. E. McCLAIN OUTSTANDING YOUNG
BAND DIRECTOR AWARD
Alfred E. “Bill” McClain, Tennessee band director and music educator for many years,
collapsed and died of a heart attack while judging the 1979 Mississippi High School
Band Festival in Jackson. Mr. McClain was serving as adjudicator for the marching
band competition in the week-long festival at Hinds Junior College.
Mr. McClain taught and directed band in the Memphis and Shelby County school
systems at Millington, Bartlett, Central, Trezevant and Overton High Schools, and
was also a principal at Germantown High School. He also taught marching band
courses at Vandercook School of Music in Chicago. Mr. McClain retired in 1974
as an academic advisor at Memphis State University. In 1977, he received the
Tennessee Band Directors Hall of Fame Award, established by Memphis State
University.
A.E. McClain was highly respected in the State of Mississippi as an adjudicator and
clinician. His influence on young bandsmen and directors, his skill in developing
superior bands, and his high ethical standards were truly outstanding. The Mississippi
Bandmasters Association is proud to honor Mr. McClain by the presentation of the
A.E. McClain Outstanding Young Band Director Award.
AWARD REQUIREMENTS
Recipient must:
1. Have at least one year but not more than five years teaching experience.
2. Not be a past recipient.
3. Have a genuine concern for students.
4. Have produced consistently positive results.
5. Have enthusiasm for teaching, a love for music, and a desire to further the musical
education of his/her students.
6. Have high professional and ethical standards.
7. Be a member in good standing of the Mississippi Bandmasters Association.

AWARD WINNER
KIM HALLMARK
Kim Hallmark graduated from Hernando High School in 2004. She attended
Itawamba Community College and received an Associate of Arts degree. While at
ICC, Ms. Hallmark participated in several ensembles including the Wind Ensemble. She went on to attend the University of Mississippi where she was a member of the
Pride of the South marching band and the UM Wind Ensemble, both under the
direction of David Willson. She received her Bachelor of Music Education in the
spring of 2008. Ms. Hallmark began her teaching career as Assistant Director of
Bands at Lewisburg Middle/High School in the fall of 2008. While at Lewisburg, Ms.
Hallmark assisted in the direction of several state champion marching bands and
also directed numerous middle school ensembles and winterguard groups. Ms.
Hallmark became Director of Bands at Lewisburg High School in 2013. Ms. Hallmark
currently resides in Hernando, MS.

THE EDYTHE M. MCARTHUR WOMEN’S MUSIC
EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR AWARD
From her humble beginnings as a full time student and part time band director in
Taylorsville in the late 1950’s, through the magnificent Henderson (Starkville) Junior
High Bands of the mid 1970’s to her small but immaculately taught West Point Junior
High Band’s of the early 90’s, (about which she often commented that this was
where she did her best teaching), Edythe McArthur was the unquestioned pioneer
for women music educators in Mississippi.
While she never considered herself a women-libber, Mrs. Mac paved the way for
future generations of women in music education not simply by being one the first
women in what was at that time a male dominated profession, but by being the
consummate professional, master teacher and a lady in the truest since of the word
that she was.
Qualifications:
Nominees must have no less than ten years active service to Instrumental Music
Education in the State of Mississippi.
Nominees must have a prolific, documentable record of Instrumental Music
Education success in the public schools of Mississippi. (Documentation shall not be
limited to contest ratings, though concrete evidence is advantageous.)
Nominees must have made significant documentable contributions to Instrumental
Music Education in the State of Mississippi, be it through state office, state and
region committee membership, continual mentorship or similar contributions
Nominees must have consistently demonstrated the highest in professional and
personal ethics through both word and deed.

WOMEN’S MUSIC EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR
CECILIA FRASCHILLO
Cecilia Fraschillo received the Bachelor of Music Education from McNeese
State University, and the Master of Music Education and Specialist in Secondary
Education from the University of Southern Mississippi. She holds certification from the
National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
Mrs. Fraschillo taught for eight years as band director at N. R. Burger Middle School
in Hattiesburg, MS where she also served as chair of the Department of Fine and
Performing Arts. Before the opening of the middle school, she taught for fourteen
years at Hawkins Junior High School, also in the Hattiesburg Public School District.
Previously, she taught for nine years at Meridian High School in Meridian, MS, where
she was a member of the faculty that brought the Meridian High School Band
to the Midwest Clinic in 1980. In July of 2006 she was a member of the faculty of
the MECA continuing education program at Vandercook College of Music in
Chicago. She retired from public school education in May of 2007. Since retirement,
she has continued to be active in the profession with a one-year adjunct faculty
appointment as university supervisor of music education teacher candidates at
Southern Miss, part-time teaching assignments in various Mississippi public schools,
and as a member of the adjunct music education faculty at Reinhardt University,
Waleska, Georgia.
Mrs. Fraschillo served for two years on the Executive Board of the Mississippi
Bandmasters Association, and has served for three elected two-year terms on
the Board of Directors of the National Band Association as a middle school
representative. She was awarded a Citation of Excellence from the NBA in 2004. In
1998, she was named Teacher of the Year by the Hattiesburg Public School District
and was awarded the same designation for the Fifth Congressional District through
the office of Congressman Gene Taylor. Mrs. Fraschillo was elected to the Southeast
Mississippi Band Directors Association Hall of Fame in 2009.
She is a member of the National Education Association, the National Band
Association, Phi Beta Mu, and the Georgia Music Educators Association. She has
served as an adjudicator and clinician throughout the Southeast at all levels, and
her bands have consistently received accolades throughout her teaching career.

Slurring with Slides: The Pedagogy of Legato Trombone

One of the most misunderstood topics in trombone pedagogy is playing legato on
the instrument. To tongue or not to tongue? Our valved-brass cousins blow through
legato passages and let the valves naturally provide diction to the notes under the slur.
However, trombones are blessed (or cursed!) with a slide, which complicates matters.
This clinic will provide some background on the issue, methods of approach as both an
educator and performer, along with some trouble-shooting solutions.
Dr. Ben McIlwain joined the faculty of The University of Southern Mississippi in the fall
of 2010 and was named the Nina Bells Suggs Endowed Professor of Trombone in May
of 2014. He holds degrees from Middle Tennessee State University (B.M.), Manhattan
School of Music (M.M.) and The Florida State University (D.M.)
One of Dr. McIlwain’s main passions and research interests is supporting new music for
the trombone. As of June 2014, Dr. McIlwain has commissioned nineteen new works for
trombone solo and/or ensemble. This includes compositions for his group, Tromboteam,
which successfully funded a Kickstarter.com campaign in 2012 that raised $10,000 for
new works for trombone ensemble including composers James Kazik, Kevin McKee and
Alan Theisen to name a few. Tromboteam is set to release their debut album containing
all nine of these Kickstarter.com funded commissions in the fall of 2014. This recording is
funded by a Scholarly and Creative Arts Grant provided by the College of Arts and Letters.
After being awarded the Aubrey Keith Lucas and Ella Ginn Lucas Endowment for Faculty
Excellence, Dr. McIlwain was able to fund a new concerto for trombone and orchestra by
Russian composer, Polina Nazaykinskaya. In addition, the composer has agreed that this
piece will be written in memory of McIlwain’s former student Gustavo Campos Cassemiro,
who lost his battle with cancer on December 4, 2013. The title of this work will be: Concerto
for Trombone and Orchestra, In Memoriam to Gustavo Campos Cassemiro. Premiere
performances include with the Southern Miss Symphony Orchestra in February 2015 and
with the U.S. Pershing’s Own at the American Trombone Workshop in March 2015.
In addition to these commissioning and performance opportunities, Dr. McIlwain has
been active in service to the International Trombone Association. The President of
the International Trombone Association, Jiggs Whigham, appointed him, Director
of TAPAS. This newly-formed project (Trombone Artists Performing for Amateurs
and Students) aims to double the membership of the ITA over the next two years
through a heavy marketing campaign. Also, Dr. McIlwain serves as a coordinator for
the state (US) and international representatives of TAPAS.

At Southern Miss, Dr. McIlwain directs all aspects of the trombone studio including The
Southern Miss Trombone Choir and Hub Bones (jazz trombone ensemble). The Southern
Miss Trombone Choir was invited to perform twice at the 2013 International Trombone
Festival in Columbus, GA. He is also a member of the Southern Arts Brass Quintet, the
faculty brass quintet at Southern Miss. His primary teachers have included Dr. David
Loucky, formerly of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, and Dr. Per Brevig, former Principal
Trombonist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, along with Dr. John Drew, professor of
trombone at Florida State University.
As a Presidential University Fellow at Florida State University, Dr. McIlwain was the first doctoral
trombone student and one of two in the entire College of Music at FSU to ever receive this
honor. The research for his doctoral treatise titled,“Select Contributions and Commissions in
Solo Trombone Repertoire by Trombonist Innovator and Pioneer: Stuart Dempster,” consists
of extensive interviews with Stuart Dempster and Pauline Oliveros, among others. He has
published articles in the Grove Dictionary for Music and Musicians and the International
Trombone Association Journal. Dr. McIlwain has also performed as a guest artist at the
International Trombone Festival, the Eastern Trombone Workshop and Trombonapalooza.
In addition to the Suggs Endowed Professorship and Lucas Award, Dr. McIlwain has also
been awarded the Junior Faculty Creative Achievement Award and the College of
Arts and Letters’ Junior Faculty of the Year Award at The University of Southern Mississippi.

Are National Boards for Me?

This clinic will provide information to directors on how to achieve National Boards
Certification. Directors will be able to decide if the National Boards Certification process
is right for them in their career, understand the benefits Mississippi provides for certification,
walk through the new process towards certification, and receive information about
support through the process. All information will be centered around achieving the Early
Adolescence through Young Adulthood (ages 11 18+) Music Certificate.
Louise Smith is currently in her thirteenth year as a band director for the Gautier schools
in the Pascagoula School District. While at Gautier Middle School, Mrs. Smith’s bands
have consistently earned superior ratings in concert and sight reading. Also, Mrs.
Smith’s students consistently score superior ratings in Solo and Ensemble Festival, earn
placements in regional band clinic and the Mississippi Lion’s All State Band.
Prior to her appointment in Gautier, Mrs. Smith graduated with highest honors from
Pascagoula High School and was a member of the Mississippi Lion’s All State Band. After
high school, she attended the University of Southern Mississippi where she earned her
Bachelor of Music Education in 2002. While at USM, she consistently placed in the Mississippi
Music Teacher’s Association Solo Festival and performed with the Pride of Mississippi,
Symphony Orchestra, Symphonic Winds, and the Wind Ensemble. Mrs. Smith earned her
Master of Education with an emphasis in Administration and Leadership in 2005 from the
University of Southern Mississippi, Gulf Coast Campus. In 2012, she earned the National Board
of Professional Teaching Standards certification in Music, Early Adolescence through Young
Adulthood. Recently, Mrs. Smith has been appointed to the Teacher Leadership Initiative, in
conjunction with the National Education Association, Center for Teaching Quality, and the
National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, for the state of Mississippi.
In her spare time, Mrs. Smith enjoys traveling and spending time with her husband,
Brian, and their two spoiled dogs, Jackson and Charlie. She continues to perform in
her church, First Baptist Church, Gautier, on her flute and is an active member of the
handbell choir. Mrs. Smith is also an active member of the Gulf Coast Band Director’s
Association, Mississippi Bandmaster’s Association, Sigma Alpha Iota, Tau Beta Sigma,
Alpha Delta Kappa, Southern Miss Alumni Association, and Krewe de Chapeaux.

This is Mr. Sprinkell’s eighth year with the Long Beach Band program. He received both
his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Music Education from USM and has taught
band in Mississippi for 39 years. Mr. Sprinkell has received 3 Citations of Excellence from
the National Band Association. He was selected as Gulf Coast Outstanding Band

Director in 2003 as well as USM Alumni Teacher of the Year. In 2004, Mr. Sprinkell was
chosen as the Mississippi Band Director of the Year and was inducted into the Gulf
Coast Band Directors Hall of Fame in 2008.
In July of 2011, the Mississippi Lions All-State Band started an All-State Jazz Band. Mr.
Sprinkell was selected to direct this prestigious ensemble and is in this 4th year as
their director. This same year, he started the new jazz music reading band at State
Clinic based on the clinic reading sessions at the Midwest Band Clinic. Membership is
voluntary and includes outstanding jazz players from all parts of Mississippi.
Mr. Sprinkell plays drums in the Gulf Coast Big Band as well as performing along the Gulf Coast
in musicals and backing for performers as they play on the coast. While at USM, Mr. Sprinkell
started a drum fraternity. Phi Boota Roota (Rudimental) is the nation’s only drum fraternity and
exists in over 20 college bands. Mr. Sprinkell is the “Founding Father” of this organization. Mr.
Sprinkell and his wife Becky have been married 36 years and have one son, Daniel.

Mr. Martin comes to us a a product of Mississippi Public Schools and our scholastic
music education programs. Now, representing one of the nation’s largest and most
prominent non-profits that showcases and supporting scholastic music education
programs and music makers, he’s coming home to share his story, experiences,
vision and hopes for music education in Mississippi and across the nation.
International Festivals and Events Association Hall of Famer, Eric Martin is President and
Chief Executive Officer of Music for All, Inc., one of the nation’s leading advocates for
the arts and producer of events for scholastic bands and orchestras.
Based in Indianapolis, Music for All is one of the largest arts organization in the State of
Indiana, and its staff of 21 annually produces a national series of regional fall marching
band competitions, the Bands of America Grand National Championships (the premier
national marching band championship), its Music for All National Festival (concert
band and orchestra), and the Music for All Summer Symposium, the largest and most
comprehensive residential band and orchestra camp in the nation. Each year, MFA
directly touches the lives of over 90,000 students and teachers, and provides performance
opportunities for students before more than 250,000 spectators. On January 1, 2013, Music
for All presented its third 300-member Bands of America Honor Band in the Pasadena
Tournament of Roses including members from across the nation in a musical statement
about the importance and value of music and band education in our nation’s schools.
Prior to joining MFA, Eric was president of ELM Productions, an Atlanta based special
events production company. His annual and “once in a lifetime” production credits
include the organization and production of the 5,000 voice Paralympics Gospel
Choir that opened the 1996 Atlanta Paralympics Games, the Martin Luther King, Jr.
National Holiday Parade, the Roam the Dome Grand Opening of Atlanta’s Georgia
Dome, the 10,000 voice international “Peace Concert,” the 25,000 participant New
York “Operation Welcome Home Parade” after the 1st Gulf War, and the Opening
Ceremony of the 1994 World University Games. In 1993, he won a local Emmy Award for
his production of the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Holiday Parade on SuperStation TBS.
Eric was the producer for the Southwest Airlines San Francisco Chinese New Year
Parade for seven years (through 2002), and is regular presenter and consultant for
festivals and events on legal, operational and human resource issues.
Eric is a member of the Tourism, Conventions, and Event Management (TCEM)
Department’s Advisory Committee at IUPUI’s School of Physical Education and Tourism
Management, a member of the President’s Council of the Jazz Education Network, and
serves on the Board of Directors of the Indianapolis Opera. He is also a Past Chairman of
the Board of Directors of the International Festivals and Events Association (“IFEA”), and a
past member of Boards of Directors of IFEA and the IFEA Foundation. In September 2000,
Eric was inducted into the Miller Brewing Hall of Fame, the highest honor awarded by IFEA.
Eric is a Certified Festivals and Events Executive and an honors graduate of Dartmouth
College. He holds a Juris Doctor degree from University of Michigan Law School, and has
been admitted by exam to the District of Columbia and State of Georgia bar associations.
Most importantly, Eric is a native Mississippian and alumnus of Greenville High School
and its bands, directed by Sidney McKay, John Anthony and Roy P. Huddleston.

Sight Reading. Sight Reading is a process, not an event, and is a strong indicator
of teaching abilities. This session is primarily directed toward the young or

Mr. Gary Cook and Mr. Ken Lewis are looking forward to sharing ideas and methodologies
which work. There will be some handouts for you and some time for questions.
Gary Cook retired as Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Bands at Delta
State University, Cleveland, in July 1996. A native Mississippian, he has spent his entire
teaching career in the state of Mississippi at Carr Junior High School (Vicksburg), Petal
High School, Hattiesburg High School, Warren Central High School and Delta State
University. He has served extensively as concert/marching adjudicator and clinician
in Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Arkansas, South Carolina, Tennessee and
Florida. Mr. Cooks honors and awards include: The Mississippi Economic Council’s
Star Teacher Award, Phi Beta Mu Outstanding Band Director in 1971 and 1985, MAC
award in 1977 and 1986, National Federation’s Most Outstanding Music Educator
in the Southeastern States in 1989 and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia’s “Orpheus” Award in
1996. He is conductor of the Mississippi Symphonic Winds, a select group of volunteer
musicians presenting free concerts. This ensemble has performed throughout
Mississippi and has presented concerts at the Mississippi Band Directors convention
in Biloxi, MS on two occasions and at the National Band Association’s Convention in
Knoxville, TN. Mrs. Cook was elected to the executive committee of the Mississippi
Bandmasters Associations in 1984 and served as President during 1987. He has served
as Brass Instructor for Pearl River Community College, Jones County Junior College
and Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. He was Manager of the Mississippi
Lions All-State Band from August 1997 thru August 2006. Mr. Cook and his wife Hanna
currently reside in Sumrall, MS.

Ken Lewis served as a Mississippi Band Director for 32 years. In those 32 years, Mr. Lewis
started a band program at Alcorn Central and from there served at Baldwyn, New
Albany, and South Panola. He ended his teaching career at Delta State University,
where he served as Director of Bands for 7 years. During his tenure at South Panola
High School the band grew from around 80 members to over 150 members. The
South Panola Band became one of the top marching and concert bands in the
south, earning all Superior ratings in every Festival and Contest entered. The band was
nationally recognized, performing at the Cotton Bowl, Knoxville, St. Louis, Chicago,
and Washington, D.C. In 1996, Mr. Lewis accepted the position of Director of Bands
at Delta State University where he directed the Marching Statesmen, conducted the
Wind Ensemble, and Supervised Instrumental Student Teachers. The D.S.U. Marching
Statesmen performed at every Mississippi District Marching Festival, at all home games,
and for the National Championship Football game. The D.S.U. Wind Ensemble was
considered to rank in the top ten percent of Colleges and Universities across the
nation and was especially recognized for its rich, warm sound. Mr. Lewis has served as
President of the N.E. MS. Bandmasters, the I-55 Bandmasters, the Mississippi Bandmasters
and the Delta Chapter of Phi Beta Mu. He continues to serve as an Adjudicator and
Clinician and enjoys mentoring young directors. It is one of his richest rewards to see
over 23 of his former students actively and successfully teaching in Mississippi and other
states. He and his wife, Karen, continue to serve as their church music directors and
enjoy their 3 children and 4 grandchildren.

Practical Suggestions and Strategies for a Long, Happy and Successful Career

Recent studies show that the average career span of a teacher in today’s
educational environment is only 5 years and the average career span of a band
director is only 4½ years. Why do so many promising teachers leave our field after
only a few short years? This clinic is designed to help Band Directors, both young and
old, avoid many of the common challenges encountered during their career. Clinic
attendees will gain a “real-world” working knowledge of skills and strategies that will
assist them in meeting those challenges while developing a high quality program and
avoiding burn-out. All of the suggestions and strategies presented come from the
clinicians’ combined 56 years of public school band directing experience.

Mark W. Laird is in his thirty third year of teaching instrumental music. He began his
teaching career as a Band Director in Pace, Florida, and has taught at Magee, Sumrall,
and Pascagoula High Schools in Mississippi. He is currently in his sixth year as Band
Director at West Jones High School in Laurel, Mississippi.
Mr. Laird was brought up in the Virginia Beach, Virginia School District and came to
the University of Southern Mississippi in 1977, where he received his Bachelor of Music
Education degree in 1980. He returned to USM as a graduate student and graduate
assistant for the University Bands and was the Director of the Basketball Pep Band. He
received his Master of Music Education degree in 1989.
Mr. Laird is a member of the Mississippi Bandmaster’s Association, National Band
Association, Phi Beta Mu, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia and the Southeast Mississippi Band
Directors Association. He was selected as the Star Teacher at Sumrall High School
in 2002 and was recognized twice by the Lamar County School District for his
achievements with the Sumrall Band. He was a recipient of the SEMBDA Outstanding
Band Director of the Year Award and is a 2-time Past-President of the SEMBDA. He is
currently serving as a Vice-President of the Mississippi Chapter of Phi Beta Mu. Mr. Laird
was also a two-year staff member of the Mississippi Lion’s All-State Band.
Together with his wife Sharon, the Lairds are the founders and managers of the
“Adventures In Music” Summer Band Camp. This is a summer music camp designed for
junior and senior high band students to help foster a love of music and to supplement
local band programs. This annual camp hosts approximately 200 students from the
surrounding area.
The Laird’s have one son, Brandon, who is a senior at the University of Southern
Mississippi majoring in trumpet and music education. In their spare time, the Lairds enjoy
spending time on their boat on the Mississippi coast and try to fish as often as possible.
Sharon S. Laird is currently in her 25th year of teaching and 17th year as Director of
Bands at Oak Grove High School in Hattiesburg, MS. Mrs. Laird has taught bands at
West Jones, Taylorsville, Magee, and Italy, TX.
Her current responsibilities include administrating and overseeing the Oak Grove Band
Program, directing the Sixth Grade Brass, the Marching Band and the Wind Ensemble.
During Mrs. Lairds’ tenure, the bands have consistently received superior ratings in
all categories at state and regional festivals and have been awarded the MHSAA
Sweepstakes Award every year since its inception.
Mrs. Laird received her diploma from Sumrall High School and Bachelor of Music
Education Degree from the University of Southern Mississippi. While at USM, Mrs. Laird
was a member of the Wind Ensemble and trumpet section leader for the Pride of
Mississippi Marching Band.
Mrs. Laird was a two-year staff member with the MS Lion’s All-State Band, serving as
Concert Director and Assistant Marching Director. She currently serves on the Board
of Directors of the Mississippi Bandmasters Association as Third Vice President. She is a
member of Phi Beta Mu National Band Fraternity, the American School Band Director’s
Association, the National Band Association, and a member and past president of the
Southeast Mississippi Band Director’s Association. Mrs. Laird has been presented the
Excellence in Teaching Award by Lamar County Schools on numerous occasions and is
a recipient of the SEMBDA Outstanding Band Director of the Year Award.

In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Mrs. Laird is the co-founder and director
of the “Adventures in Music” Summer Band Camp and is the pianist at Petal United
Methodist Church.
Mrs. Laird and her husband Mark, also a band director, have one son, Brandon, a senior
trumpet and music education major at The University of Southern Mississippi. When the
Laird family isn’t involved in band activities, they enjoy fishing and cruising on their boat.

technology professional development and training resources for educators. John has
taught music, music technology, and music business at the elementary, secondary, and
collegiate levels. He is an active performer, maintains a steady clinician schedule in
music technology, and is President-Elect of the Technology Institute for Music Educators.
Mr. Mlynczak also served as Chairman of the Creative Arts Assessment Committee for
the Louisiana Department of Education from 2011-2013. John lives in Baton Rouge,

Advice for better Flute, Clarinet, and Bassoon tone production and intonation.

This session will focus on the various issues surrounding poor woodwind tone and
intonation. Some of the topics to be discussed include: eliminating shrill sounding
flutes in the high register, clarinet pitch problems, and bassoon reed adjustment. Sheri Falcone is currently Instructor of Clarinet and Saxophone at Mississippi State
University. In addition to her teaching duties, she serves as the principal clarinetist with
the Starkville Symphony Orchestra, subs with the Mississippi Symphony and performs
as a soloist. She has performed and presented at the College Music Society, National
Association of Wind and Percussion Instruments and the International Double Reed
Society at the state, regional, national and international levels. Prior to her appointment
at Mississippi State University, she was a choral and general music teacher (k-6) in
Syracuse, NY an assistant band director (6-12) in Charleston, SC and served as a
clarinet instructor at Charleston Southern University. Her current and former students
have won competitions including MMTA and MTNA (at the state level advancing to
regional) Young Artist Competition and as winners of the Starkville Symphony Concerto
Competition. She currently has two students teaching in Europe, one at the St. Gilgen
International School Austria and one at the Amadeus International School Vienna. Her
biography has been featured in Who’s Who in America and Covington Who’s Who. A
native New Yorker, Ms. Falcone holds a Bachelor of Music degree in music education
and a Master of Music degree in music education and clarinet from Syracuse University
and has done some work toward her doctorate degree.
Dr. Denise Rowan received her Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University
of Massachusetts, her Master of Music and Doctorate of Musical Arts degrees from the
University of Southern Mississippi. She has performed extensively as a bassoonist through
the eastern and southern states. Dr. Rowan is an experienced educator of 36 years;
having taught band and orchestra in Maine, and Massachusetts, as well as in Vicksburg,
and Starkville, Mississippi. On the college level she has served as double reed instructor
at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts, and at Mississippi College in Clinton,
Mississippi. She is a past president of the Mississippi Band Masters association, former
Music Director of the Starkville, Mississippi State University Symphony Orchestra, and
currently serves as Principal Bassoonist with that orchestra, as well as Bassoon Instructor
at Mississippi State University.

Jessica Banks serves as the Flute Instructor at Mississippi State University, as well as the
director of the MSU flute choir. A native of Youngstown, Ohio, Ms. Banks received a Bachelor
in Music Education and Bachelor in Flute Performance from Baldwin-Wallace Conservatory
in Berea, OH. She also holds a Master of Music degree from Indiana University’s Jacobs
School of Music where she is currently working towards a Doctorate in Flute. Her principal
teachers include Thomas Robertello, George Pope, Kathryn Thomas-Umble, and Sheri
Larson. While at Indiana University, Ms. Banks served as an Associate Instructor of flute,
teaching secondary flute lessons and a technique class for flute majors. In addition to her
flute studies, Ms. Banks completed minors in Baroque flute under the guidance of Barbara
Kallaur and Music Theory. An avid orchestral performer, Ms. Banks has performed with the
North Mississippi Symphony, Lexington Philharmonic, Owensboro Symphony, Columbus
Indiana Philharmonic, and Evansville Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Banks currently serves as
the principal flutist of the Starkville Symphony Orchestra. A passionate music educator, Ms.
Banks frequently works with high school students and maintains an active private studio for
students in Northeast Mississippi and Western Alabama.

An Aural Approach to Instrumental Music Education

Over the last 30+ years Dr. George Naff has developed a unique aural approach
to instrumental music education incorporating several of the advanced choral
techniques of Zoltan Kodaly. This adaptation began when Dr. Naff was a student
of Arpad Darazs, a protégé of Kodaly, and has developed over the years with
thousands of band and orchestra students in elementary, high school, university, and
honor bands. This is more than a pedagogical method. According to Dr. Naff:
It is also a philosophy which embraces the value and the meaning of the music
we create. When we look at the process of making music, we realize that we, as
teachers, have a unique tool for teaching life lessons. In our culture youngsters are
constantly bombarded with the quality versus quantity question. Basically we teach
the philosophy that in life as well as in making music, quality should be our priority.
Consequently our primary focus is on the quality of sound – on tone, blend, balance,
and intonation. As we are helping our students develop facility on their instruments
and to learn to read and play accurately, we are always insisting on the beauty of

the sound, for it is this beauty that makes the music meaningful - how it expresses the
way we feel - how it reflects who we really are.
When we look at the process of making music, at the elements of music and what
we must go through to create them, we see an obvious connection. These creative
tasks are more than just musical. They are also the building blocks for a successful,
meaningful life. Life lessons that we can teach through music include:

sensitivity to beauty, empathy, diversity;
receptivity to experiences of all kinds – good and bad;
discipline and its relationship to creating beauty, to achieving excellence,
and to developing self-esteem;
goal setting and its relationship to success and to developing a success identity;

Dr. Naff uses solfeggio with the hand signs of John Curwen as well as other
kinesthetic aids to help students learn musical fundamentals and to produce
a beautiful sound. The students play and sing using progressively challenging
exercises to help them develop fully as players and musicians.
The goal is that over time, by continually singing and playing the exercises, the
students develop an aural concept of scale degree relationships and learn to play
in tune. Students learn not only to sing and play musically, they are also invited
and encouraged to become conductors using the hand signs. This increases
exponentially their motivation and excitement.
The workshop provides a short demonstration of the method, and it includes a
section for the directors on how to use these exercises for advanced learning –
scale degree awareness, scales, modes, voice leading, modulations, just-intonation
acoustics, scale degree resolution tendencies, and composition.
In addition to these elements of advanced learning, emotive conducting gestures
are emphasized and encouraged for the directors to get the most music out of the
music! Examples of significant wind literature will be used to demonstrate solfeggio
and emotive conducting techniques.
Dr. George E. Naff, a former conductor of the Duke University Wind Symphony, is
semi-retired as the Director of the Spirit of America National Honor Band and now
works as a consultant with bands, orchestras, and choirs, and with groups traveling
to Europe. An active arranger/composer and consultant for a number of high
school and university bands, his music is published by Matrix Publications and Spirit
of America Press. He is a frequent guest conductor and adjudicator for band,
orchestral, and choral performances in the eastern United States.
Dr. Naff has taught instrumental music on every level, and has served as a clinician
for hundreds of groups across the country. A former member of the United States Air
Force Band, he also served as a high school band director and as a former director
of the Symphonic, Marching, and Stage Bands at East Carolina University and East
Tennessee State University.

The clinic will cover a range of topics over the subject of basic percussion
maintenance and repairs. Everything from how to change a head, a marimba
string, all the way to how to get your timpani pedals to stop moving will be covered.
Along with this a list of materials needed at all times, along with where to purchase
the materials will be provided.
Dr. Josh Armstrong is Assistant Professor of Percussion and Assistant Director Bands
at Delta State University where he conducts all aspects of the percussion program
including lessons, ensemble, steel band, and drumline. In 2013 he received the
Doctor of Musical Arts degree in percussion performance at The University of Arizona,
and earned his bachelor’s degree in music education and his master’s degree in
percussion performance from Texas Tech University in 2005 and 2007 respectively.
He has performed with numerous groups including the Texas Tech Symphony Orchestra,
Wind Ensemble, Percussion Ensembles, and Steel Drum Band (Apocalypso Now!). While
in Lubbock he also performed with the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra, the Big Spring
Symphony Orchestra, and the Midland Symphony Orchestra. His performances outside
of Lubbock at this time included the Percussive Arts Society International Conferences
in 2006 and 2003, performances in Las Vegas, San Francisco, and New Orleans with the
steel drum bands, and a solo performance at the 2007 and 2011 National Conference
on Percussion Pedagogy.
While at the University of Arizona he directed the steel drum bands, as well as taught
private lessons, and percussion ensemble. He was also a xylophone soloist at the 2008
Arizona Percussive Arts Society Day of Percussion. In the academic year 2009-2010
he taught at the University of Northern Iowa where he held a one year sabbatical
replacement and directed all aspects of the percussion program. While there he
performed a faculty recital, participated in a faculty chamber group, and was a guest
soloist with the Waterloo Municipal Band. While there he also traveled to Superior,
Wisconsin where he was a guest artist and gave clinics and concerts at the University
of Wisconsin-Superior.
Armstrong is a sponsored educator and artist with Vic Firth Drumsticks, Secretary for the
Mississippi chapter of the Percussive Arts Society, and serves on the University Pedagogy
Committee for PAS.

DR. ANDREW BOYSEN, JR.
Andrew Boysen, Jr. is presently a professor in the music department at the
University of New Hampshire, where he conducts the wind symphony and teaches
conducting and composition. Under his leadership, the UNH wind symphony has
released six recordings and been invited to perform at regional conventions of
the College Band Directors National Association and National Association for
Music Education. Previously, Boysen taught at Indiana State University and CaryGrove (IL) High School, and was the music director and conductor of the Deerfield
Community Concert Band. He remains active as a guest conductor and clinician,
appearing with high school, university and festival ensembles across the United
States, Great Britain, and Australia.
Boysen earned his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in wind conducting at the
Eastman School of Music, where he served as conductor of the Eastman Wind
Orchestra and assistant conductor of the Eastman Wind Ensemble. He received his
Master of Music degree in wind conducting from Northwestern University in 1993
and his Bachelor of Music degree in music education and music composition from
the University of Iowa in 1991.
He maintains an active schedule as a composer, receiving commissions from
festival, university, and high school concert bands across the United States. Boysen
won the International Horn Society Composition Contest in 2000, the University
of Iowa Honors Composition Prize in 1991 and has twice won the Claude T. Smith
Memorial Band Composition Contest, in 1991 and 1994. Boysen has several
published works with the Neil A. Kjos Music Company, Wingert-Jones Music, Alfred
Music, Masters Music, and C. Alan Publications, including pieces for band, orchestra,
clarinet and piano, and brass choir. Recordings of his music appear on the Sony,
R-Kal, Mark, St. Olaf and Elf labels.

DR. SARAH MCKOIN Dr. Sarah McKoin serves as the Director of Bands, Associate Professor of Conducting,
and Chair of the Conducting Division at Texas Tech University. Her responsibilities
include Conductor and Musical Director of the TTU Symphonic Wind Ensemble,
administrating the graduate program in wind conducting, teaching conducting
and wind literature, and overseeing all facets of the University band program which
includes 5 concert bands, the 400 member Goin’ Band and other athletic bands.
Under Dr. McKoin’s direction, the Symphonic Wind Ensemble has twice performed
at the Texas Music Educators Association Conference, as well as being featured
at the Southwest Regional Conference for the College Band Director’s National
Association in Las Cruces, NM. Dr. McKoin’s ensemble recorded the world premiere
of Chakra on Narong Prancharoen’s CD entitled “Phenomenon” released in 2009
on the Albany label and a recording of the wind music of Chen Yi is in production.
Additionally, Dr. McKoin is the newly appointed Artistic Director for the chamber
ensemble “(r)EVOLUTION” as part of the professional wind ensemble Concordia
Santa Fe in Santa Fe, NM.
Prior to her appointment at Texas Tech, Professor McKoin was the Director of
Bands at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music and held
appointments at the State University of New York at Buffalo and SUNY Fredonia.
Additionally, McKoin spent nine summers in residence on the conducting faculty
at the Brevard Music Center in Brevard, North Carolina as the Director of the
Transylvania Wind Ensemble, and has taught at Interlochen Arts Academy.
Dr. McKoin maintains an active schedule as a guest conductor and clinician
and has traveled extensively throughout the United States and abroad. Recently,
she was the conductor for the Asian Pacific American School Honor Band in
Guangzhou, China comprised of 100 students from Korea, Hong Kong, China,
Malaysia, Kuala Lampur, Shanghai and other Southeast Asian cities. She has guest
conducted in Taipei, Taiwan and has traveled to Tel Aviv, Israel to serve as producer
for the world premiere recording of Roberto Sierra’s Fantasia Correliana with the
Castellani-Andriaccio guitar duo.
Dr. McKoin holds her Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Texas at
Austin as well as degrees from Wichita State University and Michigan State University.
She has served as President of the Southwest Division of the College Band Director’s
National Association as well as President of the Big 12 Band Director’s Association.
She is a member of TMEA, TBA, Phi Beta Mu, Pi Kappa Lambda and holds honorary
memberships in Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma.

MR. ISHBAH COX
Ishbah Cox, Assistant Professor of Bands at Purdue University, is Founder/Director of
the Purdue University Brass Choir, Director of the Symphonic and Collegiate Bands,
Director of the Boiler Box Band (Women’s Volleyball), and Assistant Director of the
“All-American” Marching Band (AAMB). He is also the Adjunct Instructor of Tuba at
Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana.
As an arranger/ publisher for Hal Leonard and Dev Music Company, his marching/
pep band arrangements have been performed before national audiences at
Purdue athletic events and at a Bands of America Marching (BOA) Finals Exhibition
Performance by the Purdue AAMB Trombone Section. Several of his arrangements
are immensely popular on the Internet via YouTube.
Cox is in demand as a festival adjudicator, clinician, and conductor. He has
adjudicated concerts, marching, and solo and ensemble festivals for the Indiana
State School Music Association (ISSMA) and has served as a consultant and
clinician in numerous Indiana schools and for music programs in the Metropolitan
Nashville, Chicago, and Atlanta Public School Systems. Cox has conducted a
number of groups, including the Lafayette (IN) Citizens’ Band, the Kokomo (IN)
Park Band, the Lafayette (IN) Symphony’s Youth Orchestra, the Purdue University
Wind Ensemble at the 2012 American Bandmasters Association Performance,
and he has guest conducted the Purdue Philharmonic Orchestra on their 2011
Eastern European Tour. He also has guest conducted at the Middle Tennessee State
University and Auburn University Honor Bands, Indiana Bandmasters Association
Regional and District Honor Bands, the Northern Illinois University Wind Ensemble,
the Mississippi State University Symphonic and Concert Bands, and the University of
South Alabama Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble.
Cox holds professional memberships in the National Band Association (NBA),
Indiana Bandmasters Association (IBA), Music Educators National Conference
(MENC), American Society of Composers Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), Kappa
Kappa Psi, and the Collegiate Band Directors National Association (CBDNA). He
holds Honorary Memberships with both the Gamma Pi Chapter of Kappa Kappa
Psi and Beta Sigma Chapter of Tau Beta Sigma (TBS) at Purdue University. He serves
on the Board of Directors of the Lafayette Citizens Band, as faculty advisor of the
Gamma Pi Purdue University Kappa Kappa Psi chapter, and as a member of the
Committee on Ethnicity and Gender Issues with the CBDNA.
A native of Notasulga, Alabama, Cox received his bachelor’s degree in music
education from Auburn University and his master’s degree is in music performance
(euphonium) from the University of Alabama. He is currently pursuing a Doctorate
of Arts in Wind Conducting with a secondary specialization in Euphonium
Performance at Ball State University.

William “Jeff” Cannon, Sr. received a Bachelor of Music Education from Delta State
University in 1980, where he served as drum major of the DSU band for four years.
In 1995 Jeff received the Master of Music Degree from Mississippi College. Jeff is a
1974 graduate of Pearl High School where he played trumpet, was drum major of
the Pearl Pirate Band and was a member of the 1974 Mississippi Lions All-State Band.
After receiving his bachelor’s degree, Jeff served first as assistant director, then director of
bands for Madison-Central band program in Madison, MS for eight years. In the summer of
1988, Jeff became associate director of bands for Pearl Public Schools, and was appointed
Director of Bands for the Pearl Public Schools in 2007. The Pearl “Pirate” marching band has
rated all-superior for 46 consecutive years at the Mississippi State Marching Festival. Among
its many accomplishments, the Pearl band was selected to represent Mississippi at President
George W. Bush’s Inauguration in January 2001. They were also selected to perform in the
1999 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City and were the featured band on
NBC’s Today Show while in New York. The Pirate marching band has achieved numerous
awards both locally and nationally, including a first place performance at the National
Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington D.C., and Grand Champion Marching Band for
the State of Mississippi in 1997. Under his direction, the Pirate Band won the Class 4A
State Marching Championships in 2007, and were the Class 5A marching champions in
2009, 2011 and 2012. The Pearl Band Program also received the American School Band
Director’s Association “Award of Excellence” for its outstanding instrumental music program.
Pearl’s symphonic, concert and varsity band programs have consistently rated superior
during the past twenty years as well. The Pearl Symphonic Band performed at the Southern
Conductors’ Conference in February 2008 at The University of Southern Mississippi and has
achieved “Sweepstakes” status all six years that the award has been presented.
Jeff served as President of the Mississippi Band Master’s Association in 2003. Under
his leadership the MHSAA/MBA State Marching Championships were inititated and
now over 5000 students participate each year. In addition, the MBA All-State Band
was established and nearly 1000 students audition each year for this prestigious
ensemble. Jeff was named Delta State University Alumnus of the year in 2003, and
the National Federation of High Schools Outstanding Music Educator in 2003.
Jeff has served on the staff of the Mississippi Lions All-State Band twenty times in such
capacities as staff assistant, marching director, concert director, assistant manager,
and was appointed Director/Manager in July 0f 2006. The Mississippi Lions Band
travels worldwide to participate in Lions International Parade competitions and has
won 30 international championships since 1951.
Jeff retired from Pearl High School in July 2013 and has served as Director of Music at First
Baptist Church of Terry, MS, for over 15 years. Jeff continues to serve as Director/Manager
of the Mississippi Lions All-State Band and is currently serving in his 9th year as Director/
Managor. He and his wife, Dian, have five children ages 40, 39, 38, 34, and 25. They have six
grandchildren Abby, Simon, Austin, and Alaina.,Seraphina, and Owen.

MISSISSIPPI BAMDMASTERS STATE BAND CLINIC
STUDENT REGULATIONS
1.
Be in your seat and ready to rehearse before the scheduled time.
2.
Have all necessary materials including a stand, pencil, oils and reeds for each
rehearsal.
3.
Cell phones will be turned off and put away during rehearsals. Cell phones
used during rehearsals will be confiscated.
4.
In case of sickness, call Mr. or Mrs. Rigdon (601) 433-8980. Mr. and Mrs. Rigdon
will notify your clinician and your band director.
5.
Your attendance at all clinic events, including rehearsals and the Friday night
concerts, is required. Students are expected to stay for the entire Friday night
concert.
5.
General rules of courtesy and citizenship will be observed at all times.
6.
Name tags will be worn correctly at all times.
7.
At NO time will there be any girls in boys’ rooms or vice versa.
8.
Room check will be made immediately after curfew. Afterwards, students will
remain in their rooms and quiet will be observed.
9.
Instruments are to be played only in the designated areas and at designated
times.
10. Students will dress appropriately at all times.
11. No food or drink will be delivered to student rooms.
12. Any charges to your room, including phone usage and damages, will be the
students’ responsibility.
13. Students will check out of the hotel before the Final Concert on Saturday.
14. Students found to be in violation of these rules will be sent home and the
schools that they represent will not be allowed to participate in the State
Band Clinic the following year.

THE OAK GROVE BAND PROGRAM
The Oak Grove Wind Ensemble is delighted and honored to perform for the Mississippi
Bandmaster’s Association State Band Clinic. We are grateful for the opportunity to
present this concert and hope you enjoy our performance.
The Oak Grove Band Program enjoys a rich history of success and achievement. Since
its creation more than 50 years ago, the band has performed regionally and nationally
receiving many awards and accolades along the way. The “Warrior Band” consistently
earns superior ratings in concert, sight-reading, and marching. The coveted MHSAA
“Sweepstakes Award” has been given to the Oak Grove High School Band every year
since the award’s inception.
The band department strives to maintain a balanced program in all facets of music
education, and supports and fosters the development of the individual musician. Wind
Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Marching Band, Jazz Ensemble, Indoor
Guard, Indoor Percussion, and various Chamber Ensembles combine to create the
Instrumental Music Department in the Oak Grove School System. Nearly 600 students
in grades six through twelve participate in one or more of these ensembles.
Annually, many students are selected for membership in the All-District and Lions AllState Bands. Graduating seniors are highly sought after by colleges and universities
throughout the Southeast. Over the years, Oak Grove Band Students have also been
National Merit Finalists, STAR Students, Mississippi Scholars, Homecoming Queens, Eagle
Scouts, Student Body Presidents, and, simply put, great citizens. Because of their
leadership and character, the Oak Grove Band is an organization in which the school
and community takes great pride.
Oak Grove High School in the Lamar County School District is a National “Blue Ribbon
School” and a STAR school. The school is under the administrative leadership of Helen
Price, Principal and Tess Smith, Superintendent. The Oak Grove Band Staff includes
directors, Sharon Laird, Zachary Hassell, Kristopher Chandler, David Louviere, and
Cassandra McDonald. Their support along with the support of wonderful and hard
working parents creates a superior environment, which produces superior results.

DIRECTOR OF BANDS, SHARON LAIRD
SHARON S. LAIRD is currently in her 25th year of teaching and 17th year
as Director of Bands at Oak Grove High School in Hattiesburg, MS. Mrs.
Laird has taught bands at West Jones, Taylorsville, Magee, and Italy, TX.
Her current responsibilities include administrating and overseeing
the Oak Grove Band Program, directing the Sixth Grade Brass, the
Marching Band and the Wind Ensemble. During Mrs. Lairds’ tenure,
the bands have consistently received superior ratings in all categories
at state and regional festivals and have been awarded the MHSAA
SHARON LAIRD Sweepstakes Award every year since its inception.
Mrs. Laird received her diploma from Sumrall High School and Bachelor of Music Education
Degree from the University of Southern Mississippi. While at USM, Mrs. Laird was a member of
the Wind Ensemble and trumpet section leader for the Pride of Mississippi Marching Band.
Mrs. Laird was a two-year staff member with the MS Lion’s All-State Band, serving as Concert
Director and Assistant Marching Director. She currently serves on the Board of Directors
of the Mississippi Bandmasters Association as Third Vice President. She is a member of Phi
Beta Mu National Band Fraternity, the American School Band Director’s Association, the
National Band Association, and a member and past president of the Southeast Mississippi
Band Director’s Association. Mrs. Laird has been presented the National Band Association
Citation of Excellence, The Excellence in Teaching Award by Lamar County Schools, and is
a recipient of the SEMBDA Outstanding Band Director of the Year Award.
Mrs. Laird is an active clinician and adjudicator throughout the Southeast. In
December of 2014, Mrs. Laird and her husband Mark will present a clinic entitled,
“Smooth Sailing on Stormy Seas” at the Sixty-Eighth Annual Midwest Clinic, an
International Band and Orchestra Conference in Chicago, Illinois.
In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Mrs. Laird is the co-founder and director of the
“Adventures in Music” Summer Band Camp and is the pianist at Petal United Methodist
Church. Mrs. Laird and her husband Mark, also a band director, have one son, Brandon, a
senior trumpet and music education major at The University of Southern Mississippi. When
the Laird family isn’t involved in band activities, they enjoy fishing and cruising on their boat.

MISSISSIPPI STATE UNIVERSITY
Founded in 1878, Mississippi State University is a comprehensive university offering a wide
range of opportunities and challenges for learning and growth to its diverse and capable
21,000+ member student body. More undergraduate students from Mississippi attend MSU
than any other university in the state, and MSU continues to attract the best and brightest
students, with this year’s freshman class posting the highest average ACT score in the state
of Mississippi. The Wall Street Journal also recently reported that Mississippi State has the
highest return on educational investment in the state, which is an indication of the quality
academic programs available to all of its students.
The Department of Music at Mississippi State has a long tradition of excellence in providing
outstanding instruction to both music majors and non-music majors alike. Our roster of
talented faculty members works hard to help students meet their musical goals, whatever
they may be. One of the primary missions of the Department of Music is to prepare quality
music educators for the state and region, but in addition, our graduates are enjoying
success in a wide range of musical careers throughout the United States.
The Wind Ensemble is the premiere instrumental student ensemble at Mississippi State
University. Membership is extended to the most advanced musicians by competitive
audition, regardless of university major. This select group represents the musical student
leadership of the band program and performs in both the Fall and Spring semesters.
Members aspire to elevate individual and collective musicianship and strengthen
performance skills. The ensemble has a tradition of musical excellence and is committed
to playing the finest new works along with the traditional masterpieces of the past. In
addition to multiple campus performances each year, the Wind Ensemble conducts a
regional performance tour annually. The band has been the featured university band
at the Mississippi Bandmasters Association Convention on several occasions and also
for the Mississippi All-State Concert Band. The Wind Ensemble has also served as music
ambassadors for Mississippi State in international performance tours of the British Isles
(2008), Germany and Austria (2011), and Italy (2014).
The band program at Mississippi State University was initiated in 1902 by an act of the Board
of Trustees. Today, over 112 years later, nearly 400 students participate in the band’s seven
major ensembles. The 300+ member Famous Maroon Band performs at Bulldog football
games as well as other university functions as needed. Four concert bands comprise
the concert component of the band program with the Wind Ensemble serving as the
premiere concert band. Students may also participate in jazz band and basketball pep
band in addition to marching and concert bands. Only eight people have served as
Director of Bands during the program’s history: Carl Leake (1911-1919), Henry Wamsley
(1922-1952), W. Thomas West (1952-1967), Peyton Crowder (1967-1978), James Hejl (19781983), Kent Sills (1983-1997), Rod Chesnutt (1999-2002), and Elva Kaye Lance (2002-present.)

MUSIC SELECTION GUIDELINES
STATE CONCERT EVALUATION
Performance Guidelines for MBA/MHSAA State Concert Evaluation
•
All bands must play three (3) pieces of music.
o
Warm Up Piece: Must be a published piece of music, not a chorale or
warm up exercise. Although it is a choice, traditionally the Warm Up
Composition has been a concert march or fanfare style piece.
o
Required Piece: A band must play ONE composition from the
Required Music List in the appropriate classification. As of August
17, 2013 a band’s required piece may come from one list below
their school classification. For example, a 6A band may choose
their required selection from the Class 5A list. Please check the MBA
Required Music List carefully. This list will be listed in the State Clinic
Book as well as on the MBA website. Any additions or changes to the
list will be posted on the MBA Website as soon as they are approved.
Please note that lists posted by music vendors are sometimes not
updated routinely. Please make sure to check the official Required
Music List in the clinic book or on the MBA website.
o
Selected Piece: Bands may choose their Selected Piece. When a
Selected composition is not on the Required Music List the following
must be considered:

The Music should be appropriate for State Concert Evaluation.
•
The difficulty should be appropriate for the classification.
•
When learned, the music must be of high quality both
educationally and musically for the benefit of the students
performing the composition.
The same Evaluation piece may not be used more than once in three
years at any event.
Concert Scores
o
You must furnish concert scores for all numbers performed (Warm up,
selected, and required.)
o
Have three scores of each piece of music with your school’s name on
each. Place scores in a large envelope. One envelope of scores per
adjudicator.
o
Original Scores must be submitted for adjudication. NO PHOTOCOPIES
OF SCORES WILL BE ACCEPTED WITHOUT A WRITTEN LETTER FROM THE
PUBLISHER GRANTING THIS PERMISSION. ANY PHOTOCOPIES OF SCORES
USED FOR ADJUDICATION WITHOUT THE WRITTEN PERMISSION OF THE
PUBLISHER WILL BE SUBJECT TO COPYRIGHT VIOLATION. ANY WRITTEN
PERMISSION MUST COME FROM THE PUBLISHER AND NOT A MUSIC
VENDOR.
o
Any photocopied scores submitted for adjudication without the
proper written permission will result in the performing band’s rating
being lowered by one division.
o
No custom arrangements of published music will be accepted to take
the place of the REQUIRED piece.
Multi-Movement Works
Multi-Movement Required Composition Guidelines
•
If a band chooses to perform a multi-movement work as their REQUIRED
selection they must perform the ENTIRE WORK UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED
ON THE REQUIRED MUSIC LIST.
Multi-Movement Selected Composition Guidelines
•
If a band chooses to perform a multi-movement work as their SELECTED
selection the following guidelines are in effect:
o
If the work has three (3) movements, then the band must perform two
(2) or more movements.
o
If the work has four (4) movements, then the band must perform three
(3) or more movements.
o
If the work has five (5) or more movements, then the band must
perform three (3) or more movements.
Multi-Movement Warm Up Composition Guidelines
•
A single movement taken from a mult-movement work will be acceptable
as a WARM UP selection.
Second and Third Band Guidelines
•
A Second band will select required music for their Concert TWO
classifications lower than their first band.
•
A second band will sight read THREE classifications lower than their first band.
•
A Third band will select required music for their concert THREE
classifications lower than their first band.
•
A Third band will sight read UIL Level 1.
•
No student may participate in the first and second band.
Sight Reading Guidelines

The second band will read three classifications lower than their first band
for Sight-Reading.
•
The third band will read 1A Sight-Reading.
Required Music Submission Process
•
Music for consideration should be sent to the appropriate Music Selection
Committee representative.
•
The packet should include a full score, a recording (if possible), grade
level, and a paragraph explaining why the piece should be added. Links
to scores and recordings may be emailed as long as they are full length.
•
The deadline to submit music suggestions to a representative is
December 1, 2014.
•
If needed, an addendum to the Required Music List will be made
available by the Music Selection Committee at the MBA State Band Clinic
in December and on the MBA website.
