A publication for family, friends and supporters

Vol. 4 / Issue 2
Orange Grove Center
Recognizing, supporting and celebrating 60 years of services to
children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Thank You
Sixty Years of Gems
Norfolk Southern & TVRM
Orange Grove Center has become a fixture in the
community, and many of our individuals have
become fixtures here at The Grove in our 60 years
of service to the community.
We are proud to recognize some of our individuals
who remain with us today, and who are a testament
of the services we provide to adults and children.
Linda Romans, also known as Orange Grove’s
songbird, came to Orange Grove from the
Tennessee School for the Blind when she was in
her teens. She quickly became acclimated to her
surroundings at OGC, absorbing lessons taught in
home economics classes and office training for
individuals in the Center’s blind program.
Soon after, Linda’s vocal abilities shined through
music services, as she sang with the Orange
Grove Chorus, and performed around town. Her
first solo performance was at a Chattanooga
Lookouts game.

At 62, Linda recalls the many offerings of
Orange Grove Center over the years, and
thanks those who helped her along the way.
“I’ve learned things you wouldn’t believe,”
Linda said. “I like all the people here. I
think they are wonderful,” she said.
Eighty-six-year-old Ray Steed grew up in
Sweetwater, TN. He came to Orange Grove in
1984 where his first job was in the Industrial
Training Center. Ten years later he moved
to the Recycling Center where
he was a standout employee
for the next 15 years.

ON THE COVER:
Carlene Melton, Diana Linder, Kevin
Anderson and Deta Ashley surround Double
G camp counselor, Adrianne Gutillo (center)
with love.
Today, you will find Ray at his Pine
Bluff residence, with house manager,
Cindy Chamberlin, her husband,
John, and several roommates who
round out the Pine Bluff family.
Ray Steed, 86,
enjoys leisure
time during his
retirement years
at Pine Bluff.
When time allows, Ray spends
time hanging out on his family’s
farm, gardening, watching college
football games and hunting
with John. From time-to-time,
the two enjoy a guy’s day out in
the woods near their home.
Orange Grove, with the
help of the Tennessee
Valley Railroad Museum,
blew train whistles to thank
Norfolk Southern
Foundation for their
generous gift to our
operating budget.
Daniel Huggins and the
Chattanooga Safety and Service
Committee not only presented us
with a check, but also arranged for
a fun day at the TVRM, which
included a private tour of one of
their traveling exhibit cars, lunch in
their Depot Diner, an up-close-andpersonal view of a real engine (wow,
are they big!), and a relaxing ride
from the TVRM to their East Chattanooga yard and
back. What a treat for our individuals and staff!
OGC and Norfolk Southern have enjoyed a long
partnership, with Orange Grove picking up,
cleaning and delivering NS lunch
coolers. OGC individuals clean an
average of 25-30 coolers per week,
which we like to think contributes to
Norfolk Southern’s success as the
“thoroughbred of transportation.”
Pictured top left: Carol Fridell, a DSP
in the Industrial Training Center, talks
to railroad staff as Bobby Thomas
awaits his train ride. Above right: Daniel Huggins
with Norfolk Southern presents a check to Heidi
Hoffecker for general operating support for the
Center. Center: Debbie Chadwick operates a train
via a train simulator.
Komatsu Recognized as Business of the Year by TNCO
Tennessee Community Organizations (TNCO)
recently awarded Komatsu of Chattanooga its 2013
Annual Award of Excellence for Business of the
Year. Orange Grove nominated the agency for
providing employment opportunities to individuals
with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Komatsu, a leading manufacturer and supplier of
construction, mining and compact construction
equipment in Chattanooga, was established more
than 20 years ago and at any given time has
employed at least four to six individuals served by
Orange Grove since its founding.
The 2008 recession forced the company to lay off
employees, including those from Orange Grove,
but only temporarily; Komatsu rehired them as soon
as possible. Komatsu remains committed to all its
employees, and reports that its inclusive
employment practices is just good business, as the
plant’s production is strong and growing. Kudos to
Komatsu for supporting our folks and our mission
with its commitment to employing some of the folks
we serve!

Gina Selby
Nikki Rozzell
Long-time employee Darcy Owens
has been named an Assistant Director
of Adult Services, with her area of
focus in community services. She will
be responsible for oversight and
continued development of communitybased day programs. Her duties will
include working in the community to
Keith Fralix
grow our relationships with our
business partners who contract with us for services and/or
employ the individuals we serve. Owens joined the Orange
Grove team in 1984, and during her tenure she has had many
different roles, including classroom teacher, client program
coordinator, social worker, vocational supervisor, and Director
of Children’s Services.
Gina Selby also joins Adult Services as an Assistant Director,
with a focus on Facility Services. She will supervise
transportation, personal assistants, the Industrial Training
Center, Adult Comprehensive Training, and Day Program
Nursing. She has been at The Grove since 1995 when she was
hired to develop enrichment activities such as dance, art,
acting, music theater and computer classes.
Nikki Rozzell has been named a Recycling Coordinator, and
as such oversees recycling staff, plant operation, five drop-off
centers and three refuse centers. She has been with Orange
Grove since 1996, when she was hired as a teacher’s assistant
in Children’s Services. Most recently, she was managing staff
and individuals in the Residential Habilitation program.
With Owens’ move to Adult Services, Keith Fralix has
stepped in as the Director of Children’s Services. He supervises
the school-age classrooms and oversees all aspects of
operations. He joined us just two years ago and has served
ably as the coordinator of Education and Training.
This year’s amazingly wet weather threatened,
but dampened neither play nor spirits during
Glenda Dalton and
Margaret Johnson retire
Orange Grove recently said “goodbye”
to Glenda Dalton (top) and Margaret
Johnson (bottom left), upon their retirement
from the Center.
Glenda, a long-time
employee and mother of
Meredith, who was served
by Orange Grove, was the
human resources assistant
for more than 12 years. She
served Orange Grove for
more than 35 years.
Margaret served Orange
Grove faithfully for 44
years, and saw many
changes during her tenure,
including construction of our
current facilities. Her first
job at the Grove was with
the Blind Program at the
original site on Main Street.
For the last 12 years she supervised individuals
in the Industrial Training Center.
Orange Grove wouldn’t be possible without
friends and staff like Margaret and Glenda,
and we wish them the very best!
the day’s play, instead providing additional
entertainment as golfers and staff alike watched
the looming storm clouds skirt the bluffs.
Lunch was very generously provided by Doll
Buckner from McAlister’s Deli. Thirst and
hunger during play were slaked by beverages
and snacks served by Orange Grove staff and
individuals, Ruth Toon, Donnee Cox, T.C.
Cox, Rachel Andry, Deta Ashley, Bradlee
Hamilton, Travis Henderson, Frankie Kelly
and Keith Kirby.
After play, LMGC’s Margaret Johnson and
her stellar kitchen staff served up delicious
chicken wings, Mexican layered dip, petite pizza
slices, and veggies, dip and cheese.
Once again, June Cooper baked batches and
batches of brownies to satisfy chocolate cravings.
Tournament play was coordinated by Billy
Buchanan and Adam Campbell of LMGC.
Golfers traveled from as far away as Cleveland,
OH, Murfreesboro and Atlanta to play. The event
was the most successful of our golf tournaments
to date, netting close to $50,000.
Many, many thanks to everyone who participated
as a player, supporter and sponsor - we had a
terrific day that yielded a terrific outcome for the
people we serve.
Check us out to see more team and
tournament photos.

Orange Grove Donates
Yard, Bake Sale Proceeds
To United Way
Orange Grove donated more than
$1,500 from two yard and bake sales to
United Way of Greater Chattanooga.
Items sold were contributed by Orange
Grove staff, who are major supporters of
the annual event.
Orange Grove Center is one of 40
partner agencies supported annually by
United Way.
Project Open W.I.D.E. (Windows in Dental Excellence),
a program devoted to the oral health care of individuals
with developmental disabilities served by Orange Grove
and throughout the community, received $15,000 to
expand the services they offer into a local operating
room. This is the second grant awarded to the project by
CFGC. In 2011, the organization gave just under
$20,000 for dental supplies and equipment to assist the
project in its first year of operation.
Dr. Kristin Compton, director of the clinic, states,
“We have learned a lot in the medical community
about the connection between good oral health and
chronic diseases. The support from CFGC is invaluable
to our ongoing mission to improve the lives of the
people we serve.”
Children’s Services is again a beneficiary of CFGC’s
generosity with an award of $16,990 to purchase
educational supplies, equipment and learning materials
for the school-age program. Last year’s CFGC grant
benefitted our applied behavioral analysis (ABA)
program that helps children we serve who have a
diagnosis of autism.
Thank you, Community Foundation, for your continued
support, and for making an investment in the lives of our
children and adults!
