Host Committee, Board of Trustees and staff – I hope you’re ready for a night of
drinks, treats, art and friends.
I think you will agree with me that this year’s selection of work is the best to date.
More importantly, you can take it all home (with a generous bid, of course)! This
collection is a direct result of MOPA’s growing international reputation. Throughout
contributors 40
the year, our Collectors’ Salon and Photo Forum members travel the world, meeting
artists and building relationships that become the amazing donations you see here

contributing the beautiful photographs and limited-edition publications that will make
this auction a success. Returning for the third year, Andrea Fiuczynski continues
to bring her dynamic energy to this special night. Thank you, Andrea, and a warm
welcome to Sotheby’s, we are thrilled to have you as our auction partners. Finally, my
appreciation goes out to the donors, Host Committee and MOPA staff for your efforts
in making this an outstanding event.
Enjoy the evening, enjoy the art and thank you for helping us to make a difference
by believing in the work we do at the museum and for our communities. Now, go bid

ABOUT THE ARTIST
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Flor Garduño began her career as a darkroom assistant for Manuel Álvarez Bravo,
one of Mexico’s most prestigious photographers. Since then, Garduño has received
numerable prizes, and her work has been exposed and published around the
world.
Since 1997, Bill Armstrong has been making photographs for his Infinity series,
a body of work that is wide-ranging in subject matter. Using appropriated
images, which he manipulates through photocopying, cutting, painting, and
re-photographing, Armstrong focuses the lens to “infinity.” The resulting
images become blurred representations of what they once were, eliminating the
identifiable qualities of the subject and allowing the viewer to bring their own
interpretation to each piece. In this aspect, the images become about perception,
mystery, and visceral response. Armstrong’s photographs have been exhibited
worldwide. His work can be found in numerous collections, including the Victoria
& Albert Museum, Brooklyn Museum, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Philadelphia
Museum of Art, and the Vatican Museum, among others.
From her series Fantastic Women, Garduño’s work often integrates themes related
to nature and symbolizes the power of the female form. Her photographs have
been exhibited widely in Europe, Canada, the US and Latin America, and are held
in many permanent collections, including those at the Museum of Modern Art, the
Art Institute of Chicago, and the Bibliotèque National, Paris.

Josef Fischnaller embeds mischievous details into ornate, luminous photographic
portraits that reference Old Masters like Caravaggio and Diego Velázquez.
Playing with traditional ideals of beauty and subverting class and gender norms,
Fischnaller revives and reinvents the sitters of heroic painters that came before
him. His background in high-end fashion photography comes through in the
compositions, evoking the same sense of intense construction, visionary planning
and seductive theatricality. Fischnaller has received the CCA Venus Gold and
Silver awards, the International Andy Award of Montreux Public Interest and the
Cresta Awards for Unicef in 2006.

2013
Tamas Dezso began his career as a photojournalist for various magazines and daily
newspapers before deciding to focus on his own work examining Eastern Europe at
a time of major political transition. His series Notes for an Epilogue is an on-going
body of work depicting a time of transition in rural Romania and across Hungary
following the fall of Communism in the late 1980s. The project comprises images
of large-scale, painterly landscapes, derelict factories and life on the periphery
of society. With this series, Dezso is not offering portraits of a nation but rather
a careful examination of the decaying ruins of the Soviet era, their effects on
villages, communities and individuals and the slow disappearance of centuriesold traditions. His photographs have appeared in TIME magazine, The New York
Times, National Geographic, GEO, Le Monde magazine, and many others.

Infinite Balance: Artists and the
Environment (2011)

Yao Lu’s images of lush mountain vistas swamped in mist and surrounded by sea
are not what they seem. His concern about the impact of China’s rampant path
toward urbanization is portrayed in photomontaged manipulations that borrow
from the aesthetic of classical Chinese painting. Mostly circular, fan-shaped,
or scroll-like, Lu’s harmonious landscapes are populated by tiny figures walking
through the mist. However, a closer look reveals the chimerical mountain scenes
are in fact construction sites scaled out of proportion. Lu’s commentary on the
dramatic consequences of China’s rapid industrialization is further reinforced
by the artist’s stylistic choices. His recycling of a traditional aesthetic to
approach contemporary issues reveals the tension between society’s past and
present values. Lu’s environmental message crosses borders and raises pressing
questions about the hidden costs of modernization and global sustainability.

Edelman Gallery, Chicago
Combining her technical expertise with her deep-seated roots as a painter, Ysabel
LeMay continues her exploration into the power and divinity of nature through
a unique process she calls “Photo-Fusion.” At first glance, you might think you
are looking at a hyper-realistic painting. However, LeMay’s technique is very
straightforward, yet extremely time consuming. She photographs flora, birds, tree
limbs, flowers, and anything else she finds along her daily walks. Once back in the
studio, she assembles all her files into her computer and starts layering images,
using hundreds of individual files to construct each final photograph. Balancing
color, light and subject, LeMay creates pieces that vibrate with an intensity often
experienced in dreams. Since winning the KiptonART Rising Program in 2010,
LeMay’s work has been in over 70 exhibitions around the globe and has been
acquired by numerous museums and private collections.

Through photography, video, and installation, Kevin Cooley’s work is a meditation
on our evolving relationship with technology, nature, and ultimately each
other. Cooley works with elemental forces beyond his control, addressing how
these forces contend with each other, and how we exist among them, using
his experiences and direct interventions to provide the underlying conceptual
framework of his practice. In Controlled Burns, swirling and imposing clouds
of smoke contend with one another in a physical battle between diametrically
opposing explosions of black and white. The imagery serves as metaphor for
binary opposition, e.g. good vs. evil or day vs. night, but this is not the sole
line of inquiry. Inspired by the smoke signals of the Papal conclave which
uses smoke as form of basic communication, this series is a part of a larger
artistic practice focusing on human relationships to nature. Cooley’s work is
in prominent collections including 21C, the Nelson-Atkins Museum, and the
Guggenheim Museum.

MOPA PHOTO AUCTION 2015
For over 40 years, Henry Diltz has been the visual historian of popular music.
His work has graced hundreds of album covers and has been featured in books,
magazines and newspapers. His unique artistic style has produced powerful
photographic essays of Woodstock, The Monterey Pop Festival, The Doors,
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Jimi Hendrix and scores of other legendary artists.
In the hills near La Honda is a ranch Neil Young purchased in 1970 and where
he still lives today. He has recorded several albums at the Broken Arrow studio
there and he wrote the song ‘Old Man’ about the previous owner. Graham
Nash once told a story about the ranch: “I once went down to Neil’s ranch
and he rowed me out into the middle of the lake-putting my life in his hands
once again. He waved at someone invisible, and music started to play in the
countryside. I realized Neil had his house wired as his left speaker and his barn
wired as his right speaker. And Elliot Mazer, his engineer, said ‘How is it?’ And
Neil shouted back, ‘More barn.’”

Infinite Universe at Dawn celebrates Yoko Ono’s seminal art and activism across
eight decades. The book brings Ono’s life work together for the first time, from her
Avant-garde initiatives, through her creative collaboration with John Lennon, to her
continuing music, art and peace campaigns. Iconic, rare and previously unseen
pieces and photographs from the artist’s own archives are showcased in over 300
silver-edged pages.
‘Seeds of ideas, like pebbles, were raining through my life. Genesis Publications
has captured those seeds and presented them to you here, for your observation,
selection and experimentation, to make their destination entirely yours.’ - Yoko Ono
Working together since the age of 13, the collaborative artwork of Doug + Mike
Starn effectively combines the traditionally separate disciplines of sculpture,
photography, painting, video, and installation. This featured piece continues their
exploration of the interconnectedness of philosophical notions, memory, and
the natural environment. Through their use of multimedia and the creation of
metaphorical landscapes the artists infuse their work with natural physical layers
and mystery. The Starns have been the recipients of numerous awards, including
two National Endowment for the Arts awards in 1987 and 1995, The International
Center for Photography’s Infinite Award for Fine Art Photography in 1992, and
artists in residency at NASA. Their work has been widely exhibited and is included
in a number of permanent collections throughout the world.
Ono is an award-winning multi-media artist and peace activist, who constantly
challenges and stretches traditional boundaries. Her performance art in the early
1960s, experimental films and collaborative music with John Lennon in the
1970s, and international one-woman shows and retrospectives during the 1980s,
1990s and 2000s illustrate her varied career.

Inspiration comes from many sources. For Hendrik Kerstens, it is his daughter,
Paula, who inspires his photographic explorations. For more than two decades,
self-taught photographer Kerstens’ primary subject has been his daughter. From
the beginning his images were not the traditional snapshots of a child growing
up, rather his formalized portraits of her had and continue to have far more in
common with traditions in painting — light, gaze, gesture and scale. These
are the foundation upon which Kerstens creates his on-going body of work. By
directing the viewer’s gaze to images that closely reference painting and yet are
the product of modern technology, the artist has created work that is sublime,
provocative, and endlessly fascinating. His photographs have been collected by
museums around the world and have inspired tastemakers as diverse as Elton
John and Alexander McQueen. McQueen, in fact, based his fall 2009 collection
on Kerstens’ work.

By combining painting and collage in her finished
pieces Roberts challenges our perception of the
photographic medium. Roberts lets her imagination
guide her as she takes original photographs and
repurposes them to create illustrative stories with
figures and animals, infusing the work with a rich
narrative.

CONDITIONS OF SALE
The property offered in this sale will be offered and sold by the Museum of Photographic Arts
(MOPA). Any questions should be directed to MOPA and not to Sotheby’s, which serves merely
as auctioneer for MOPA in conducting the auction sale and participates on the following terms
and conditions, as amended by any posted notices or oral announcements during the sale,
which govern the sale of all the property at the auction:
1.(a) Neither Sotheby’s nor MOPA assume any risk, liability, or responsibility for the authenticity
of the authorship of any property offered at this auction (that is, the identity of the creator or the
period, culture, source or origin, as the case may be, with which the creation of any property is
identified).
1.(b) All property is sold “as is” and neither Sotheby’s nor MOPA makes any representations
or warranties of any kind of nature, expressed or implied, with respect to the property, and in
no event shall either of them be responsible for the correctness of any catalogue or notices
or descriptions of property, nor be deemed to have made any representations or warranty
of physical condition, size, quality, rarity, importance, genuineness attribution, authenticity,
provenance, or historical relevance of the property. No statement in any catalogue, notice or
description made at the sale in any bill of sale invoice or elsewhere, shall be deemed such as
representation or warranty or any assumption of liability. Neither Sotheby’s nor MOPA makes
any representation or warranty, expressed or implied, as to whether the purchaser acquires
any reproduction rights in the property. Prospective bidders should inspect the property before
bidding to determine its condition, size, and whether or not it has been repaired or restored.
2. Any property may be withdrawn by Sotheby’s or MOPA at any time before the actual sale
without any liability.
3. Sotheby’s and MOPA reserve the right to reject a bid from any bidder. The highest bidder
acknowledged by the auctioneer shall be the purchaser. In the event of any dispute between
bidders, the auctioneer shall have sole and final discretion either to determine the successful
bidder or to re-offer and resell the article in dispute. If any dispute arises after the sale, MOPA’s
sale records shall be conclusive at all times.
4. If the auctioneer determines that any opening bid is not commensurate with the value of the
article offered, he/she may reject the same and withdraw the article from sale, and if, having
acknowledged an opening bid, he/she decided that any advance thereafter is insufficient, he/
she may reject the advance.
5. On the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer, the highest bidder shall be deemed to have
purchased the offered lot subject to all of the conditions set forth herein and thereupon (a)
assumes the risk and responsibility thereof (including without limitation damages to frames

or glass covering prints), (b) will sign a confirmation of purchase thereof and (c) will pay the
full purchase price therefore or such part as MOPA may require. All property shall be removed
from MOPA’s premises by the purchaser at his/her expense no later than five (5) business
days following the sale, and if not so removed, will be stored by MOPA at the expense of the
purchaser for the account, risk and expense of the purchaser and such added charges will then
be added to the purchase price of the object. If the foregoing conditions and other applicable
conditions are not compiled with, in addition to other remedies available to MOPA by law,
including, without limitation, the right to hold the purchaser liable for the bid price, MOPA at
their option may either (a) cancel the sale, or (b) resell the property on three days notice to
the purchaser and for the account and risk of the purchaser, either publicly or privately, and in
such event the purchaser shall be liable for payment of any deficiency, all other charged due
hereunder and incidental damages. MOPA shall have the rights afforded a secured party under
the California Commercial Code with respect to such property, and MOPA may apply against
such obligations all monies or other property help or received by MOPA for the account of, or
due from them to, such purchaser.
6. Payment should be made payable to MOPA. MOPA may give the door of the work and/or the
artist who created it under the name and address of the final purchaser.
7. Unless exempted by law, the purchaser will be required to apply the California state and local
sales tax or any applicable compensating use tax of another sate on the total purchase price.
8. MOPA is not responsible for the acts or omissions of carrier or packers of purchased lots,
whether or not recommended by them. Packing and handling of purchased lots by MOPA is
at the entire risk of the purchaser. In no event will MOPA’s liability to a purchaser exceed the
purchase price actually paid.

9. The Conditions of Sale as well as the purchaser’s and Sotheby’s and MOPA’s respective
rights and obligations hereunder shall be governed by and construed and enforced in
accordance with the laws of the State of California. By bidding at an auction, whether present
in person or by an agent, order bid, or other means, the purchaser shall be deemed to have
consented to the jurisdiction of the state and federal courts of the State of California.
10. In the case of absentee bids or bids transmitted by telephone, Sotheby’s and MOPA are not
responsible for any error or omissions in connection with such bids.

A PHOTOGRAPH,
YOU MAKE IT.
11. All lots are offered for sale subject to a reserve, which is the confidential minimum price
below which such lot will not be sold. Sotheby’s may implement such reserve by bidding up to
the reserve on behalf of MOPA.
