March 2015 Spring Issue - Volume 17, Issue 1
Message from your Mayor
by Mayor John Dominy
The Winter of 2015 has been too long, too cold. Spring cannot arrive soon enough. But each year, I am
reminded that springtime in Wenonah is just absolutely beautiful.
As the weather warms, neighbors and friends alike take to the outdoors. It’s a time for renewal, rediscovery…
and reinvigorated promises that yes, this will be the year that I finally finish painting my old house.
But whatever you do, don’t forget to take time to enjoy one of our Borough’s greatest treasures – our Wenonah
Woods.
With over five miles of trails, one can spend a month of springtime weekends in our conservation areas and still
not discovery all that it has to offer.
Perhaps Deb and I will see you while out for a walk…until then enjoy!

“volcano” shaped application of mulch to any tree
base. Mulch should always be kept from touching
the trunk. Young trees will need a constant supply
of water (five gallons a week) to survive extreme
summer weather.
Shade Tree Commission
The Commission meeting dates for the balance of
2015: March 3rd, April 7th, August 4th, September
17th and November 4th. All meetings start at 7:30
P.M. and are held at the Wenonah Community
Center.

The Commission contracted this past winter for the
removal of 40 trees and trimming of over 89 trees in
the borough. The removed trees were either
diseased, dead or a potential hazard, and in the case
of trimming, created street or sidewalk obstruction
or had an abundance of dead branches. We are in
the process of purchasing 65 bare root trees for
planting in late March/April and some homeowners
with available planting spots have given their “ok”
for plantings in the clear zone.
As summer approaches, we would ask all
homeowners to avoid the practice of creating a

It is hard to believe that the Wenonah Swim Club
will be opening in only 90 days! Despite the frigid
weather, the Swim Club Board and members have
been busy improving the Club and readying for
another great season.
Facilities and Snack Bar
The Swim Club is excited to announce that
Wenonah’s own Hawk’s Deli will be taking over
the operations of the Club Snack Bar this summer.
Hawk’s has lots of great ideas to improve and
revitalize our Snack Bar! Also, over the winter, the
Screen House underwent improvements, including
an upgrade of the electrical system, new ceiling
lights, the installation of four commercial grade
oscillating fans and the addition of rope lights for
birthday parties and other celebrations. The Ladies
Room also received a face-lift.
Activities and Events
It's starting to warm up, at least in our event
planning! Save the Date - on Saturday, May 9th,
we will once again be celebrating the approaching
summer with our ever-popular Cinco de Mayo
party, open to members and non-members! Details
and tickets will be available soon at
www.wenonahswimclub.com. Also this summer,
we're adding Monday Funday! Early Monday
evenings, there will be a package deal of dinner and
games for the kids. And of course, we'll have
family camp-outs, movies under the stars, games for
adults and kids on the 4th of July and Labor Day,
soccer and tennis lessons and camps, private and
group swim lessons, adult swimming practices and
meets, adult fitness and yoga classes, and all the
usual fun you expect from your Swim Club every
summer!
Swim and Dive Teams
The Swim and Dive teams had another great season
in 2014, and they are looking to improve upon last
year’s tremendous season in 2015! In what will be
his sixth year as our head coach, Chris Dalsey will
continue to lead the team along with Assistant
Coach Skyler Lindsey, as the Wenonah
Waverunners continue their quest to become one of
the top teams in Tri-County's "A" Division. Head
Dive Coach Bob Tender will return for a fourth year
to lead us through another great dive season.
To get a head start on the upcoming season, the
Parent’s Organization will be meeting soon. We
will be looking for parents to lead our committees
this year (clothing, spirit, fundraising, etc.) to help
us prepare for the 2015 season. We need 6-10
volunteers right away to assist in planning our July
10th Golf Outing, the Swim and Dive Teams’
biggest fundraiser of the year! The money raised
from this year’s outing will be used to replace/repair
the starting blocks.
Wenonah Swim & Dive Team Registrations for
Club members will be held on Saturday, May 9th at
Holy Trinity Church in Wenonah from 9 am to
Noon. Please email Dave McNamara, Swim and
Dive Team Rep, at [email protected]
with any questions, comments or concerns.
Membership
Starting this March, the Wenonah Swim Club will
kick off our 2015 Membership Drive in earnest.
All Club members are encouraged to help in the
recruiting of new families to our Club. As a new
component of our membership drive, we will be
offering any existing member a $100 credit if
they bring in a new family. Additionally, new
members receive $50 off of their membership
dues if they sign up before April 1st.
The Wenonah Swim Club is truly a hidden gem.
The Club boasts great facilities, lots of fun,
family-friendly
activities
and a
highly
competitive swim team. If you are interested in
helping our efforts, have any suggestions or
would like to inquire about membership, please

Wenonah Post 192,
The American Legion
Submitted by Chris DeMaise
Wenonah’s American Legion Post 192 continues its long-standing tradition of
serving our Community and our nation’s active-duty military and Veterans.
Wenonah’s Memorial Day Parade, Monday, May 25! Mark your calendars
and join us for Wenonah’s own Memorial Day Parade on Monday morning,
May 25th. During Memorial Day each year, Post 192 along with the Boy
Scouts, Girl Scouts, Clearview Marching band, military vehicles, and Mantua’s
Post 305 of the American Legion and Post 7679 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars march from Marion and East
Mantua Avenues to the
Wenonah Cemetery where we
hold a ceremony in keeping
with the real meaning of
Memorial Day – to honor
those who died while serving in
our nation’s armed forces.
Join us in our march to the
Wenonah Cemetery or simply
line Mantua Avenue to watch the
parade march by. If your
organization would like to march
in the parade, please contact
any Post 192 member. On the
weekend prior to Memorial
Day, Scouts assist us in placing
American flags at veterans’
grave sites at the cemetery and
this year, American flags will line Mantua Avenue in the days preceding Memorial Day. If you or your
organization would like to help placing flags, let us know. Look for our upcoming Memorial Day notices and
Mantua Avenue flags.
Help Us Honor Wenonah Residents on Active Duty in the Military. We are asking Wenonah residents for
your support in providing names of any Wenonah residents currently on active
duty in the military. First, we will announce their names in a tribute to
Wenonah residents on active military duty during the presentations for the
July 4th celebration in Wenonah Park. Second, our Post will pay for a oneyear membership to the American Legion for each active duty resident, which
entitles them to myriad benefits as well as a monthly magazine.

Over 120 Enjoy Post 192’s Dinner with Friends. Over 120
people attended Post 192’s annual Dinner with Friends event
on February 7th to enjoy cocktails, dinner, presentations, some
light-hearted roasting’s, raffles, auctions, music, and dancing.
Post 192 also used the occasion to honor and remember longtime Post 192 Legionnaires who recently passed, including
Jack Sheppard Sr., Frank Eggert, Tony Currier, Doug Gehring,
and Joe Schultes. Attendees included Wenonah’s new Mayor, John R. Dominy; councilmen Bill Norris and
Paul Lader; and Bob Shryock of the Gloucester County Times. Presentations were also provided by Boys State
Delegates Billy Norris and Kyle Bright; and Girls State Delegates Olivia Lombardo and Greta Colman. Don’t

Mrs. Sheppard Accepts Legion Award for Late Husband, Mr. Jack Sheppard Sr. Mrs. Helen Mae
Sheppard accepted The Exemplary Member Award on behalf of her late husband, Mr. Jack Sheppard Sr., from
Wenonah's American Legion Post 192. Jack of course was Wenonah’s mayor for 24 years among his many
contributions to the Borough of Wenonah but he was also a dedicated and faithful member of Post 192 for 27
continuous years before his passing on New Year's Day. He is missed by many, including Post 192.

The Wenonah Historical Society is currently
undergoing a period of transition and growth as we
utilize social media (Facebook) and our own
Internet website to accomplish our Mission
Statement as detailed below.
The Mission of the Historical Society is to preserve,
acquire, and protect items of historical significance
to the borough of Wenonah. In that respect, we have
dedicated years to our museum, which now has both
physical presence and digital availability. Our
Mission further provides for the education of the
public on the borough's rich history and on items of
historical significance. To that end, we provide
presentations to the elementary school and
programs at our regular meetings, in addition to
maintaining a display cabinet at the Wenonah
Elementary School. We also provide educational
awards to sixth grade graduates of Wenonah
Elementary who have demonstrated an excellence
in history.
Our Facebook group site (Wenonah Historical
Society) is proving to be a rich source of additional
information and artifacts related to Wenonah, as
well as a stimulator of interest in our history from
current and former residents and non-residents
alike. Our website
(www.wenonahhistoricalsociety.org) allows our
organization to virtually display some of the many
items we hold in our museum collection and serves
as an archive for reference items such as our
newsletters. The Wenonah Historical Society is also
responsible for the historic house plaques that are
seen on many older homes throughout our fair
borough.
We are an active, interesting and friendly volunteer
group that shares an interest in local history. Family
memberships are $15.00 per year which includes

Winter Review
In the last newsletter, we reported progress in
restoring the circular hiking trail around the former
Synnott's Pond. In mid-December, Bob Bevilacqua
and team put together one of the final puzzle pieces:
the re-seating of a trail bridge across Camelback
Run which had been dislodged by raging
floodwaters 16 months earlier. This handsome
arched piece of woodwork by John Schad once
again welcomes all to explore the tiny oasis on East
Elm Street.
Despite temperatures in the twenties and a stiff
breeze, 22 people and 4 canines joined our Five
Mile Hike on a crystal-clear January 31st. At the
outset, I dedicated the hike to the memory of Frank
Eggert and former mayor Jack Sheppard, Sr., two
prolific borough volunteers who had passed away
during January. Both of these men were
instrumental in creating the “Ring of Green” which
makes it possible to enjoy miles of woodland hiking
around the borough.
you will begin to see his tremendous hands-on
contributions to all the
public areas of our
town.
Frank was a tireless
advocate for expansion
of the conservation
lands. He felt it was
critical to our quality of
life to create trails,
bridges, and sitting
benches to make these
areas easily accessible
to all. Up until several
months ago, he
regularly hauled tools,
plants, and mulch into
the woods to take care of the myriad little details
that come attached to 135 acres of land. Discarded
decks, disused
telephone
poles, and old
railroad ties
were all
wrangled into
new lives as
trail
components,
or into handpainted signs welcoming visitors.
When I joined WEC 12 years ago, Frank's example
of community volunteerism opened my eyes to the
positive change that dedicated people could bring
about where they lived. Frank's exact set of skills
were truly unique; it will take a number of people to
do the jobs he had been doing. The challenge is now
placed on our shoulders – the citizens of town – to
maintain Frank's dedication for making our local
outdoors a vibrant, healthy, and welcoming place.
Goodbye to a Valued Friend and Colleague
The WEC's Senior Trailmaster, Frank Eggert,
passed away on January 15th at the age of 89 after a
brief battle with cancer. Frank was a founding
member not only of the WEC in 1975, but also its
predecessor organization the Natural Woodlands
Council in 1965. Once you know where to look,

our “crafty” members will enter their projects in the
Spring Conference/Achievement Day. To prepare
for this day, we have held Crochet/Knit classes and
at one of our meetings, learned how to “arm knit” a
shawl. We are also having a wreath making
session.
The Special State Project is NAMI-National
Alliance on Mental Illness. Our members are filling
two back packs for people who are referred to a
shelter. “Forget-Me-Knot” pins and flower packets
are being sold to support this project.
The students in Wenonah Elementary School who
won the NJFRWC Short Story/Poetry Writing
Contest read their stories at our February meeting.
Their families were invited to the meeting. The
students stories and poems were creative and
showed how talented these students are.
