Hall rentals
The Centre Julien-Ducharme offers the public the possibility of
renting multi-purpose rooms for meetings, seminars, forums,
conferences, or receptions. The rooms can accommodate
from 100 to 350 people. Bar and coat check services are also
available. For more information, call 819-565-0522 between
8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
The Centre Julien-Ducharme is pleased to welcome a new food
concession: Le Baluchon Santé.
Centre users will be able to enjoy carefully prepared foods.
Whether you’re on your way to or from a sport, or having a
meeting at the Centre, everyone will be able to eat well at the
canteen. Le Baluchon Santé also offers personalized catering
(full meals, healthy box lunches, etc.).
As part of the move toward changing the types of food offered
at arenas, a food policy is currently being implemented. It
seeks to offer healthy foods to clientele. Le Baluchon Santé
takes this new policy seriously by offering healthy alternatives,
in addition to “typical” arena food. Don’t hesitate to make
special requests during your events!

Celebrated personality
Gérald Quirion, watercolour artist
Born in 1942, Gérard became interested in drawing at a very
young age. According to his mother, he created nothing but
masterpieces. He fed his imagination with his Prismacolor
pencil crayons, the animals he cut out of cardboard, and the
stars he stuck on the ceiling of his room. Life on the family
farm in Sainte-Edwidge-de-Clifton made him happy…
He studied at École normale de Laval-des-Rapides and
Scolasticat des Frères des Écoles chrétiennes (Montreal) to
become a teacher. Returning to the Townships, he taught art
and music full time. He took classes in drawing, oiI painting,
sculpture, and pottery at the former École Racine. Choir and
piano were also part of the picture!
In Waterloo, he met an artist, Sister Marie Dubreuil, who was
passionate about oil painting, and so he took up his brushes
once again. A few years later, teaching French took him
completely away from the arts.
There is a great deal of fantasy and humour in his artistic
creations. He casts his eye on the world, lending it a new
dimension and a new perspective. And why the black borders
around the shapes that are part of his artwork? Gérard
explains that it’s a way of bringing out the vivid colours, like
other artists did in the past. He recalls Rouault and those who
painted on glass, along with comics where the drawing is
simplified.
“I like to be daring with colours so that they stand out. I like
to observe the path of the unpredictable mix of colours and
water on paper. It’s a very personal way of creating the world I
live in. And, the richness of colour in comic strips has never left
me indifferent,” said Gérald Quirion.
Since 2001, he has participated in several exhibitions in the
Estrie region. Last fall alone, he presented his work at the Salle
du Parvis as part of an exhibition organized by the Diocèse
de Sherbrooke, along with having his works featured on the
walls of the accounting firm Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton.
In 2012, he also participated in major exhibitions in different
cultural venues, including the Bibliothèque municipale
Éva-Senécal, the Centre culturel Pierre-Gobeil, and the
Centre d’art de Richmond.

He is currently secretary and member of the Artistes du Parvis,
a group that occasionally presents group exhibitions. Since
September 2011, he has been teaching watercolour classes
at Sercovie. He was named an honorary member of the
Aquarellistes du lundi in 2012. Gérard is also a GAAF (Gestion
des arts de l’Arrondissement Fleurimont) board member.
Awhile later, once retired from teaching, he devoted himself
to watercolour, thanks to some remarkable teachers. Denis
Lambert, Brigitte Charland, Josée Perreault, and Pierre
Jeanson, in particular, had an influence on his work.

On October 19, the Borough of Fleurimont paid tribute to several hundred of its volunteers. Organizations from the Borough
were asked to submit the names of individuals who set themselves apart through their involvement and dedication. It is thanks
to the generosity of these volunteers that many organizations are able to provide the assistance and activities that they do. On
behalf of the entire community of Sherbrooke, we would like to thank each and every one of them for their dedication and active
contributions.

Cœur-Immaculé school
Cœur-Immaculé school is an elementary school that welcomes
approximately 500 students, including 300 from the Galt,
Conseil, Murray sector, and 200 from the Fleurimont (Galvin,
Allard, Louise, Couturier, Châteaumont, and Lecours) sector.

What follows is a brief history of this large elementary school
borne of a merger between a girls’ school and its neighbouring
boys’ school.
In 1948, citizens of the Cœur-Immaculé-de-Marie parish,
supported by priest Eugène Foley, asked that classes be
opened in their neighbourhood. They even had confirmation
that the Sœurs de la Présentation de Marie would provide
two teachers. The commissioners therefore agreed to this
request and classes opened in the parish hall while awaiting
construction of a new school.
In 1950, the school board purchased land at the intersection
of Rue du Conseil and 15e Avenue Sud to build a new school.
In 1951, Chalifoux school received its first students, both boys
and girls, and the Sœurs de la Présentation de Marie managed
the institution.

This was during the baby boom and a lack of classrooms was
soon felt. Citizens therefore requested that a new school be
built to address the lack of space, and also to separate the
boys and girls.
The request was accepted and a new school, next to Chalifoux
school, opened its doors in 1953. Biron school welcomed girls;
Chalifoux school thereby became a school for boys.
The Sœurs de la Présentation de Marie gave up management
of Chalifoux school to focus exclusively on Biron school, with
teachers earning an annual salary of $2200, and the principal
$2400. The Frères du Sacré-Cœur took over management of
Chalifoux up until 1958. Since then, Chalifoux school has been
under secular management.
The two schools quickly reached capacity and several scenarios
were studied by the school board, including adding space to
each of the schools.

In 1967, the school board authorized the expansion and
merger of the Biron and Chalifoux schools. It was also during
this time period that the new school was renamed CœurImmaculé school. It accommodated 542 students, 10 nuns,
and several lay teachers.
In 1990, the school park at Cœur-Immaculé-de-Marie was
opened to the great enjoyment of students and children from
the area. In 1997, a multi-purpose room was set up to house
the daycare service and accommodate students who stay at
school over lunch.
Since its founding, Cœur-Immaculé school has welcomed
thousands of boys and girls, offering a place to learn and
develop, and contributing to their growth. This is thanks to
all the women and men who have devoted part of their lives
to sharing their knowledge with young people who had the
desire to learn. Some of you reading this are among them –
thank you!

Family of Charles Quintal
Charles married Rosa Rivard from Brompton Township, and
they had 15 children. Despite having a large family to raise,
Rosa was an active woman, always in a good mood, who
loved socializing and often accompanied Charles to various
work-related activities.
In addition to farming, Charles was a butcher and a milkman,
and he grew huge gardens. From 1950 to 1955, he was also a
municipal councillor, as well as church warden.
Charles, as a councillor, and Arthur Maillé, as mayor, were on
municipal council together and predicted that the municipality
would greatly expand in the years ahead. They were right; Des
Blés, and Des Paysans streets and Place Quintal were built on
the farm’s land.
Several of Charles and Rosa’s children left their mark in related
sectors. Some of you will remember:
• Roméo, teacher, school principal, and Director General of the
Commission scolaire d’East Angus, municipal councillor, and
merchant;
• Maurice, Gaston, Jacques, and Jean, who made their mark in
the food industry;
• Léo, who continued running the farm until it was sold and
then moved into the food industry;
• Roger, a dairy farmer who later purchased the farm of Ernest
Thériault on Chemin Duplessis, which today is the site of Parc
Quintal and Centre Julien-Ducharme;
• Roland, predestinated to the priesthood, who instead
chose family life. He spent his work life as treasurer at the
Commission scolaire catholique de Sherbrooke;

Charles Quintal was born in 1895 in Nashua, New Hampshire.
His father, a carpenter, had left Quebec to build cotton mills
in what was a booming industry. Missing Quebec, he returned
around 1900, and bought a small farm from the Johnston
family, on Chemin de Stoke (12e Avenue Nord today). Charles
later acquired the farm from his father and moved in to raise
his own family there.
• Gertrude, who married a dairy farmer;
• Jeanne and her husband, who operated a convenience store;
Charles, Rosa, and their children made significant contributions
to the development of Fleurimont, and also to Sherbrooke, as
the farm was located on the border of the two municipalities.
The farm was small but it was operated to its full extent. The
paternal home is still standing and houses a member of the
Quintal family.

The Jardins communautaires Shermont is the perfect place
to meet neighbours and create social, intercultural, and
intergenerational ties. Make it an outdoor family activity!
It doesn’t cost anything to become a member and
only requires that you keep an eye on safety in your
neighbourhood. We act as extra eyes for our police officers.

Meetings are open to all members seeking information. During
these meetings, the committee discusses crime statistics and
upcoming activities.

then we will finalize future meeting dates.

In a community garden, management of a plot of land is shared
by a group of residents. The Borough of Fleurimont currently
offers residents the chance to cultivate their own plot.
