Involved in my community fleurimont Le Comptoir familial de Sherbrooke inc. 134 Founded in 1959 by Caritas, the Comptoir familial de Sherbrooke is a non-profit organization that receives no government grants. Its mission is to receive clothing, tableware, and toys in good condition graciously provided by donors and to sell them in its store located at 151, rue Bowen Nord. The store is open to everyone and offers a variety of quality products at the lowest prices on the market. Its revenues are distributed as financial support to various community organizations in Sherbrooke. The Comptoir familial also offers stop-gap services to people referred by organizations by providing them with free clothing. By recycling the clothes and other various items it receives, the Comptoir familial gives a second useful life to these items and therefore contributes to reducing pressure on the environment. Store hours Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, 1:30 to 8 p.m. Information: 819-569-5336 InfoSherbrookois | Winter 2014-2015 Borough Services Volunteer tribute evening On October 18, the Borough of Fleurimont paid tribute to several hundred of its volunteers. Organizations from the Borough were asked to highlight the specific involvement and dedication of local people, and the following were each honoured at the celebration: • Yvan Provençal, Les Loisirs Sainte-Famille de l’Estrie inc. • Karine Parenteau, 10e groupe scout Est-Calade • Céline Nickner, Artistes du Parvis • Annie Olson, Cercles de Fermières de Marguerite-d’Youville • Céline Lacharité, Classique Pif Vacances Transat • Jacqueline Kirouac, Club d’âge d’or Amitié Saint-Sacrement inc. • Huguette Grenier, Club d’âge d’or La Détente du Cœur-Immaculé de Marie inc. • Aline Gagné, Club d’âge d’or Plein air Quatre-Saisons inc. • Mabel Nadeau, Club d’âge d’or des Sages de Marie-Reine-du-Monde • Gabrielle Pinard, represented by Sophie D. On behalf of the entire Sherbrooke community, we would like to thank each and every one of them for their dedication and active contributions. In the course of the evening, we also highlighted the heroic gesture of a citizen and employee. Last July 14, François-René Milot demonstrated his compassion and provided assistance to a woman who was on the verge of jumping off the Aylmer bridge, thus saving her life. The Borough had prepared quite a show to highlight the work of these volunteers. Singer Nadja performed some of her hits, and her appearance was greatly appreciated. In what year was the Centre hospitalier universitaire de Sherbrooke (CHUS) built? Did you know that Parc Victoria was also a zoo in the late 1940s? Have you ever heard of Ascot Nord? You can now find the answers to all these questions, thanks to the project “Local History of Fleurimont.” By visiting the Web page sherbrooke.ca/histoirefleurimont, history buffs can access a whole range of historical photographs, archives, and video accounts from people whose lives gravitated around the six remarkable figures and locations from Fleurimont’s history that were selected for this project: the CHUS, the Cœur-Immaculé-de-Marie church, Saint-Jean-Baptiste school, Parc Victoria, parish priest Dolor Biron, and former mayor of Fleurimont, Julien Ducharme. The project was set up both to promote part of Fleurimont’s rich historical heritage and to foster a sense of belonging among citizens, whether they live in this Borough or any other part of the city. The historical content will stir the memories of those who have seen these figures and locations that shaped the face of Fleurimont evolve over the years. As a complement to the Web content, interpretation panels summarizing the highlights of these six historical figures and locations have been installed at the following locations: • Parc Victoria, near the Claire-Fontaine pool; • At 280, rue du Conseil, in front of the Saint-Jean-Baptiste church, in honour of parish priest Dolor Biron; • At 987, rue du Conseil, at the Centre culturel et communautaire du Cœur-Immaculé; • At 1671, chemin Duplessis, in honour of Julien Ducharme; • At 184, rue Biron, at the former location of Saint-Jean-Baptiste school; • At the CHUS, 3001, 12e Avenue Nord, near the trail that circles the pond. You too can learn more about your local history by visiting the Web page sherbrooke.ca/histoirefleurimont. This project was made possible thanks to the Ministère de la Culture et des Communications, the Ville de Sherbrooke’s Division de la Culture du Service des Sports, de la Culture et de la Vie Communautaire, the Borough of Fleurimont, and the Société d’Histoire de Sherbrooke. She worked many years as a nurse at the CHUS, Hôtel-Dieu, and St-Vincent hospitals. With a keen business sense, she also operated her own clinic, where she offered massage therapy, hypnosis, and electrolysis services. Her love for work and business has even led her to run a French bakery. Since her retirement, Cécile has been providing support to some of her ailing loved ones, who are ill or elderly and losing their autonomy. As well, she visits seniors in their homes through the Réseau d’Amis de Sherbrooke. As if all this weren’t enough, Cécile Nickner also dedicates a lot of her spare time to supporting the Salle du Parvis, the Borough of Fleurimont’s cultural centre. Because she lives only a few houses away from the centre, she frequently offers her services to greet visitors and run the cloak room or ticket office. However, her speciality consists of preparing wonderful appetizers for the dozen or so official exhibition openings hosted in the Salle du Parvis each year. Let’s just say... Cécile is a woman who knows the intricacies of hosting. She prepares the plates, serves them, and even takes care of the dishes. In return, the Salle du Parvis strives to provide an interesting program of artistic shows and events of all kinds. But all the shows in the world will never convey the infinite gratitude that we, at Salle du Parvis, feel towards Cécile for all the time she has given us in the last four years. For some time now, we have nicknamed her our “Golden Volunteer,” and this opportunity to pay tribute to her is very timely. Our entire team wishes her many more years of active life, as this seems to fill her heart with joy and satisfaction. Cécile, thank you for your tremendous generosity! For more information or to reserve a plot, contact Carole Labonté at 819-565-2516. Gilles-Charland, a park to explore in the winter! In 1959, Normand Raby, who was a restaurant owner from 1945 to 1959 and an entrepreneur from 1958 to 1978, acquired land in Ascot Nord and Fleurimont. The sector was named after him. In 1979, the Fleurimont town council purchased plots totaling 40 321.7 m2 and named them the “Boisvert” playground. Then, in 1982, Fleurimont town council adopted a resolution to change the park’s name to “Parc Gilles-Charland,” in honour of Councillor Gilles Charland. Mr. Charland was a councillor from 1973 to 1993. He taught for 42 years at Saint-François school, now named De la Montée, Saint-François pavilion. He also worked in the Canadian Armed Forces Reserve for more than 20 years, achieving the rank of major. Over the years, Parc Gilles-Charland has been equipped with interesting facilities that are appreciated by everyone, including: • a service building; • a multi-purpose rink; • two synthetic-surface tennis courts; • a play structure for youth ages 2 to 12; • a well-lit rock dust hiking trail through woods, that is turned into an ice path in the winter open to free skating. There is nothing comparable to this elsewhere in Sherbrooke! It is also of note that this small wooded area is home to a great variety of birds, and that it has been considered a bird sanctuary since 1983. Indeed, back then the Ville de Fleurimont had developed a land use plan approved by representatives of the Société de loisir ornithologique de l’Estrie to preserve this rich and unique environment. Since 2013, the Borough of Fleurimont has been hosting neighbourhood celebrations in early February, with multiple activities to enjoy. During the 2015 edition, the Fleurimont Borough Council plans to officially inaugurate Parc Gilles-Charland, in honour of a person who was greatly involved in the community.
