Farewell 2015 – a Year of Successes
As we approach the final few weeks of 2015, we reflect on the
successful year that our students and staff have enjoyed at Alec Hunter
Academy. Our 2-day ‘no notice’ Ofsted inspection in March, followed
by a monitoring visit in June, both resulted in very favourable outcomes
which endorsed the progress that we felt the school had made. The
subsequent reports were filled with positive comments, of which we
are duly proud, and suggest that we are very well placed to continue on
our journey of improvement. Through constantly reviewing and
refining our practices, we are confident that we can be judged as the
‘good’ school that we all know we are when we receive our next visit.
In August, these promising signs were confirmed when our ex-Year 11
students secured the second best exam results in the school’s history,
despite the fact that the standard of GCSE exams is getting harder every
year. The 10% rise in our headline figure, to 48% of students gaining 5
or more A*-C grades including English and Maths, placed us in the top
ten most improved secondary schools in Essex. Moreover, we were
delighted to receive news last week that our Maths results ranked in
the top third of all schools nationally, whilst results in Maths,
Catering, Engineering, Graphics, PE and Travel & Tourism were all
significantly above the national average. We were delighted to
welcome back this year group recently, to share their achievements at
our annual Presentation Evening, where GCSE certificates were
presented together with a number of special awards which were
sponsored by members of our local and wider community. Please take
the time to read the article contained within this newsletter,
celebrating our students’ outstanding individual successes.
In September, we welcomed our new Year 7 cohort, who have settled
in well during their first term, and we continue to strive for excellence
with our entire student body, all of whom are aware of the need to
adhere to the high expectations that we have in place.
Parental engagement has played, and will continue to play, an
extremely important part in our success, so we would like to take this
opportunity to thank you all for your continued outstanding support.
We wish you and your family a wonderfully festive, relaxing Christmas
break, and let’s hope that 2016 holds even more happiness for us all!

Farewells
Students of the Week
It is always with sadness that we say goodbye to members of staff, and
at the end of the term we will be bidding the following farewells:
Mr Ustura - Lead Teacher of
Maths
We wish Mr Ustura all the very best of
luck with his new Lead Practitioner role
at the Samuel Ward Academy. He has
played a pivotal role in the Maths team’s
progress to becoming the jewel in our
crown, and we have watched him grow
professionally, throughout the 8 years
that has spent with us, to develop into
the outstanding teacher that he is today. Good luck Mr Ustura!
Mrs Barnard – Assistant
SENCo
We have been fortunate to have Mrs
Barnard working at Alec Hunter
Academy for the last 10½ years. She has
provided superb support and guidance
to some of our most vulnerable
students, both past and present, and
more latterly has worked hard to make
our ‘Andrew’s Shed’ provision the envy
of other local schools. She has been a wonderful, loyal colleague who
will be greatly missed by students and staff alike, and she leaves with
our very best wishes for her new, promoted position at the Alternative
Provision School in Colchester.
Mrs Forster – Display & Art
Technician
Mrs Forster has been working with us
for 6½ years and has played a significant
role in maintaining high standards of
display around school, as well as
preparing the school for big events such
as our annual Open Evening. We have
greatly
appreciated
her
input
throughout her time with us, and she
leaves with our very best wishes as she resumes her previous career,
producing window displays in the retail industry.

Charities Week Update
Bonus Vivo Winners
As reported in issue 42, we ran a Charity Week in aid of Children In
Need from 9th to 13th November. Each year group had a day on which
to organise fundraising events, with activities ranging from cake sales
(very popular!), bric-a-brac sales, leg waxing (for the boys!), planking,
a penalty shoot-out plus games to name the teddy, guess the number
of sweets in the jar, find Pudsey etc. Our students were amazing and
put an outstanding amount of
effort into ensuring the success of
their events. Some students also
did sponsored silences, bike rides
and three-legged walking. The
13th November, Children In Need
day, was a non-uniform day, and many teachers got involved by
dressing up as students!
Monitors
We held a whole school raffle with prizes donated by Jessica Ennis-Hill,
Jimmy Carr and Jean-Christophe Novelli. Charly Sopowski, Joshua
Possee and Mrs Eckersley-Ambrose were the lucky winners. We also
had prizes awarded to the tutor group in each year which raised the
most money, with 7H, 8R, 9N, 10L and 11H coming out on top. Well
done!
It was a great week, with a real buzz around the school, and we even
got a mention by Sir Terry Wogan on his radio show! The final total
raised was £1,964.70 which was incredible. Thank you to everyone
who supported the week and helped to make it such a huge success.

School Play ‘Shut Up’ Report by Mr Holland
On the 2nd and 3rd December 2015, we held our school play ‘Shut Up.’ This was a successful production and
all cast members should be congratulated on performing a challenging text that dealt with the difficult issues
of growing up and fitting in at school. It was really pleasing to see regular performers from Year 9 and 10
taking part, as it is always a pleasure to work with these creative students who are extremely dedicated to
Drama, making all the time at rehearsals worthwhile. For Year 10 students, ‘Shut Up’ will be their last School

Play and we hope that they have enjoyed all the performances that they have been involved in, as we
certainly have. These students have been instrumental in helping to establish the School Play over the last
4 years since the inaugural performance of ‘The Musicians’ in 2012, and they have really helped to ensure
that all the pieces that have been presented have been of a professional standard, raising the profile of
drama across the whole school. We hope they remember and treasure these memories forever.
Looking to the future, it was pleasing to see many new faces taking part this year, particularly those from
Years 7 and 8. All of these students rehearsed and performed their characters in great detail and they should
be proud of their efforts. We hope to see them, and more
students from these year groups, auditioning for the many
future school plays and productions to come.

Skills Day – 27th November 2015
Birmingham Christmas Market Report by Alexandra Calugar 10H
On the 27th November we travelled by coach to the
Birmingham German Christmas Market. The market
consisted of many German stalls that had traditional
food and Christmas ornaments. We learnt a lot
about the German culture and how Christmas is
celebrated. Throughout the day we had to complete
a booklet about the German market and answer
questions in German about our day. Also, many of
the stallholders spoke German, which gave us the
opportunity to practise our communication skills
when buying items from their stall. If this day trip
was on offer next year, I would definitely like to go
again, because it was really fun and helpful with our
German!
Year 8 Technology Skills Day
77 Year 8 students spent Skills Day in the Art, Design and Technology department. All the students took part
in three workshops. In Textiles, they learnt how nature can be used as a source of inspiration in fabric design.
They then designed their own fabric and printed their designs using vegetables and leaves. In Food, students
made their own mini panettone. This extended the work they are doing in their Food Technology lessons,
where they make a basic bread dough. Finally, in Art, students made 3D newspaper/card pop art sculptures.
This was linked to previous Year 8 study on pop art and the technique will be used in subsequent lessons.
Child Development
On Monday 30th November, Carrie-Ann and Albert came
into school to talk to all the GCSE Child Development
groups. Carrie-Ann first spoke to the Year 11 students when
she was carrying Albert. On this visit, she talked about antenatal care, the symptoms of pregnancy and how to cope
with them. She was able to discuss birth with the students
and why she was unable to follow her original birth plan.
The students then asked questions about the impact of
motherhood and what activities Carrie-Ann had been
advised to do with Albert, to help his development.

Carrie-Ann spent longer in the Year 10 lesson, as she went back and answered questions on pregnancy, birth
and caring for her new-born baby. Albert was definitely a hit with the girls and this active session really
helped improve their understanding. Well done to Hollie Tapner who managed to rock Albert to sleep twice
during the day.
Martin Fordham Visits AHA Report by Alice Clark and Archie Ellis
On Friday 16th October, Martin Fordham from Colchester Institute came to Alec Hunter to demonstrate a
variety of culinary skills to the Year 10 Catering class and 3 Year 9 students.
Firstly, he showed us how to divide a chicken into 8 pieces. He explained how this makes chefs valuable to
their employers. The pieces of chicken can sell for a lot more in either a restaurant or supermarket than the
whole chicken. He showed us how to make the chicken drumstick lollipops he used to make when he worked
at the Ritz Hotel. They were on their room service menu for £5 each!
The next skill he demonstrated was how to fillet and skin a salmon, and how to remove bones using pliers.
It was interesting to hear that salmon skin can be used for items such as belts and handbags, after going
through the same tanning process as snake skin. At this point we had a competition to win a chef’s hat. We
had to identify a range of food products including liquorice sticks, star anise, polenta, wild rice grains,
pumpkin seeds and macadamia nuts. There then was a challenge in which 5 students took part, together
with Miss Birrell. The challenge consisted of carving a potato into a barrel shape. Martin demonstrated this
twice, before allowing the contestants to have a go. This proved to be a lot harder than it looked, and the
winner was Megan Lowe. Martin then made a stir fry for us to sample, followed by brownies.
This was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon, and taught all of us catering students a great deal.
Sword in the Stone Trip Report by Mr Holland
On Tuesday 8th December, students from Year 7 to 10 went to see the pantomime 'The Sword in the Stone'
at the New Wolsey Theatre in Ipswich. Once again we visited the New Wolsey and students were blown
away by a multi-talented cast, all of whom act, sing and play instruments.
Students were a pleasure to take on the trip. They thoroughly enjoyed the performance and were fully
involved in the panto as active members of the audience!

Emergency School Closure Procedures
As the colder weather approaches, it is the time of year when we review our emergency school closure
procedures. With our electronic communication in place, it is our intention to communicate any information
regarding possible school closures, due to adverse weather conditions, via email and text message. As
always, we will make an informed decision as early as possible in such circumstances and details of this will
then be sent to parents/carers. Please also check our website and listen to local radio stations for updates,
should the need arise. It is, of course, always our aim to keep the school open, and we would only close if
prevailing conditions would compromise the safety of our students and staff.

R.E. Trip to Glasgow Report by Miss McEvoy
On Saturday 5th December, 7 Year 11 students
travelled to Glasgow for a GCSE R.E. Trip. We had an
early morning flight from Stansted and a smooth
landing considering Glasgow was experiencing the
beginnings of Storm Desmond! Students had the
opportunity to visit the Medieval Glasgow Cathedral
built in 1136 and see, first-hand, some of the religious
expression in Christianity through the Cathedral’s
architectural features.
After an early lunch we all braved the wind and rain to visit the Glasgow Necropolis. This is one of the largest
in Europe and is modelled on the Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris. Students explored the symbolism and
artwork of the different gravestones and memorials as part of their religious architecture topic. The
necropolis hosts designs from architects such as David Hamilton and Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
The group took shelter from the rain and enjoyed a mug of hot
chocolate to warm them up after their experience of the harsh
Glaswegian weather. Students then went on to explore the
exhibitions at St. Mungo’s Museum of Religion, Life and Art. The
museum houses art, sculptures and religious artefacts from a
range of both ancient cultures and the main world religions.
Students worked on their case studies, selecting some of their
favourite pieces of art and sculpture to use for their exam. The
angel exhibition seemed to be the favourite for most students
with representations of angels from cultures all over the world,
from cherubs in the renaissance era to angel tattoo designs of more modern times.
A very welcome dinner was enjoyed, followed by a quick return to the airport for a surprisingly turbulencefree journey home. The students were a credit to the school and handled the harsh weather very well with
no complaints. I am certain that this experience will add context to their studies and support their
understanding of the subject!

100% Attendance
We continue to celebrate each time a Tutor Group achieves 100% attendance for a whole week, with a
number reaching this benchmark several times already this academic year. Our current school record is for
a Tutor Group to have achieved 100% attendance for a total of 12 weeks throughout the year; let’s see if
one of our Tutor Groups can smash that record this year!
