Tokyo — Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce
the introduction of the COOLPIX S1, the first in a new
series of COOLPIX cameras that blend portability with
“Style” — which is precisely what the “S” in “S1”
stands for.
Not only is the COOLPIX S1 highly attractive with a
sleek aluminum exterior available in Pure Silver, Ivory
White and Ebony Black* — it also retains its super
slim and small dimensions (89.9 x 57.5 x 19.7mm)
at all times due to its “right-angled” optics system that
allows the zoom lens to function throughout its entire
range without protruding from the camera body.

• Compact Slim, Metal Body
With the advantage of 5.1-megapixel performance
and a powerful 35-105mm 3x Zoom-Nikkor ED†
lens (35mm equivalent), the COOLPIX S1 achieves
superior results with true-to-life color. It also features
an impressively large, bright 2.5-inch LCD monitor
that makes it easy to compose shots and play back
the results with 110,000-dot clarity and thereby
does away with the need for a viewfinder. The
COOLPIX S1 has also been specially designed to
offer exceptionally easy operation, with a Graphic
User Interface (GUI) that allows the user to select
functions by either name or icon and a handy HELP
button that displays explanations for functions on
the main menu. Furthermore, the menu can be set
to display all text in the user’s choice of 12 languages.

• Nikon’s D-Lighting

• COOLSTATION MV-11 Cradle
• Face Priority AF Mode
This optical system also features an ED lens to ensure
sharp, natural results and the COOLPIX S1 additionally
features a selection of innovative features, delivering
smooth operation and high-quality results.
The COOLPIX S1 is also remarkably convenient. As
a result of Nikon innovation, it has been designed
to operate with a significant reduction in energy
consumption so that a greater number of shots can
be taken per battery. In fact the COOLPIX S1 can
take up to 200 images with an EN-EL8 Rechargeable
Battery (based on CIPA standard‡), so the user can
enjoy spending more time taking pictures and waste
less time recharging. Also as a direct result of Nikon
superior engineering, the COOLPIX S1 offers a highspeed start-up time and enables swift continuous
A range of unique Nikon features enable the user
to improve images in-camera to get better results
when shooting in difficult conditions. Nikon’s exclusive
D-Lighting function can be easily selected in Playback
mode. Automatically compensating pictures taken
with excessive backlight or insufficient flash, DLighting adds light and detail to darker parts of
images while leaving areas with desirable exposure
exactly as they are. Nikon’s In-Camera Red-Eye Fix
function does as its name suggests, automatically
detecting the annoying red eye effect that can be
caused by flash, then digitally correcting it in-camera.
The COOLPIX S1 also features the clever Face-priority
AF function, which has the ability to detect human
faces in the frame and then provide optimal automatic
focus for sharper, more satisfying portraits. The
COOLPIX S1 features a Blur Warning function too,
which lets users know when an image has been
compromised by camera shake so they can
recompose and shoot again for better results.
The COOLPIX S1 additionally comes complete with
the COOL-STATION MV-11. Delivering true plugand-play convenience, the COOL-STATION MV-11
is more than just a charging cradle. Placing the
COOLPIX S1 in the COOL-STATION MV-11 enables
the batteries to be charged without removing them
from the camera body. The COOL-STATION MV11 also connects the COOLPIX S1 to a TV and to a
computer via USB.

FEATURED PRODUCT - COOLPIX S1
Like all the other cameras in the successful COOLPIX
range, the COOLPIX S1 offers a selection of handy
Scene Modes that makes it easy to get pleasing
results in common situations. Altogether, the camera
is equipped with 17 Scene Modes, four of which
feature Scene Assist, so the user can simply select
the one best suited to the subject — such as Sunset
or Portrait — then leave the camera to select the
optimal settings automatically.
One of these handy Scene Modes is the new
“Underwater” mode, which is designed for use with
the optional Waterproof Case WP-CP5, which allows
the user to take shots with faithful color when
snorkeling or scuba diving to depths of up to 40
meters.
Although the COOLPIX S1 offers the convenience of
compatibility with widely available SD memory cards,
it also has 12MB of internal memory too, which
means users can go on shooting even when they
are not carrying any additional media. And despite
its super slim dimensions, the COOLPIX S1 can also
be used to record movies with sound — offering a
choice of four movie modes with shooting at up to

15 frames per second and up to VGA resolution.
The COOLPIX S1 can also be connected to a TV to
make it easy to view the results.
The COOLPIX S1 makes it easy to produce printouts
as well. Because it offers PictBridge compatibility, it
can be connected directly to a compatible printer,
thereby doing away with the need for a computer.
The COOLPIX S1 also comes complete with Nikon’s
PictureProject software, which makes it easy to edit,
organize and share images.

Nikon COOLPIX S1 Feature Highlights
A new series of COOLPIX ~ The COOLPIX S1 is the first in a new series of COOLPIX cameras. It places a strong emphasis on the camera body
combining portability with the ultimate in style. Indeed “style” is what the “S” in “S1” stands for.
Stylish design ~ The COOLPIX S1 has a sleek aluminum finish that gives it a look of real sophistication, while its super slim dimensions achieved
through the advanced electronic engineering of a totally new “right-angled” optics system make it both pleasing to the eye and highly comfortable
in the hand. The elegant COOLPIX S1 also features a significantly enlarged TFT LCD monitor. Measuring 2.5 inches across and delivering the clarity
of 110,000 dots, it makes it easy to compose shots and view recorded images. The COOLPIX logo has also been recreated to be more slender with
gentle curves that complement the smooth lines of the camera body, and the COOLPIX S1 is available in a choice of Pure Silver, Ebony Black and
Ivory White* to suit the user’s individual sense of style.
Greater energy efficiency for longer battery life ~ The COOLPIX S1 has been specially designed for low power consumption that enables batteries
to last longer, so users can spend more time shooting and less time recharging. In fact, the COOLPIX S1 can take up to an impressive 200 shots
using a single EN-EL8 Rechargeable battery.
Swift response ~ As a direct result of Nikon’s engineering expertise, the COOLPIX S1 has been created to deliver more satisfying, responsive
performance. Not only is the COOLPIX S1 quicker to start up than many other compact digital cameras in its class, but it also offers swift continuous
shooting at a rate of up to 1.8 frames per second.
In-camera image improvement ~ The COOLPIX S1 makes it easy for virtually anyone to achieve pleasing results. With 5.1 effective megapixels
and a 35-105mm 3x Zoom-Nikkor ED lens (35mm equivalent), the COOLPIX S1 captures scenes with clarity and faithful color. Furthermore, it also
features a clever set of features with the power to actually improve images in-camera. The In-Camera Red-Eye Fix function automatically detects
the annoying red eye effect caused by flash and then corrects it automatically in-camera to produce pleasing night portraits. Nikon’s impressive DLighting function automatically compensates for excessive back light or insufficient flash — keeping brighter parts of images as they are while adding
light and detail to darker areas. The COOLPIX S1 also features the new Face-priority AF function, which cleverly detects human faces in the frame,
then provides optimal focus on them for sharp, satisfying results. The COOLPIX S1 even features a handy Blur Warning function too, which alerts
the user of images compromised by camera shake, so they can recompose and shoot again before leaving the scene.

COOLPIX 7900

Two highly sophisticated, high-quality compact digital cameras with a
wealth of easy-to-use features and the ability to achieve exceptional results.
Tokyo — Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce
the introduction of the E7900 and E5900. Two
superior quality compact digital cameras with the
power to take highly impressive images, they also
feature appealing exterior designs and boast a range
of convenient functions and features that are highly
advanced, yet easy to use.
For easier composition and anytime viewing, the
E7900 and E5900 feature a large 2.0-inch
amorphous silicon TFT LCD monitor. Bright and clear,
this makes it easy to view images at any time. It also
makes it much easier to navigate the new Graphic
User Interface (GUI), which has been specially
designed to allow the user to select functions on the
main menu by either name or icon. There’s also a
Help button too, which can be pressed to display
an explanation of each function on the main menu
and the cameras can be configured to display the
menu in a choice of 11 languages.
For impressive imaging performance, the E7900
and E5900 both feature a 3x Zoom-Nikkor ED lens
with a focal range equivalent to that of a 38-114mm
lens in 35mm format. They also offer the imaging
advantages of 7.1 and 5.1 effective megapixels
respectively and a 1/1.8-inch CCD. As a result of
these factors, impressive quality is retained even
when images from the E7900 are enlarged to A3
dimensions and when images from the E5900 are
enlarged to A4 size.
As for speedy performance, the E7900 and E5900
offer continuous shooting at approx. 1.7 and 2fps.
They also feature high-precision Multi AF with a
choice of 99 manually selectable areas, 5 choices
for Auto select AF and the advantage of the new
Face-priority AF function (Face recognition capability

may be limited depending on the shooting conditions),
which can be easily selected when using the Portrait
Scene Mode. As its name suggests, Face-priority AF
ensures crisp focus when shooting portraits by
automatically sensing the presence of a human face
in the frame and setting accurate focus accordingly.
Nikon has also turned its ingenuity to reducing power
consumption, allowing the E7900 and E5900 to
take significantly more shots per battery than other
compact digital cameras. In fact, the E7900 is able
to take an impressive 220 shots (approx.) with a
single fully charged EN-EL5 battery, while the E5900
is able to shoot as many as 270 (approx.). Both
cameras are also compatible with widely available
disposable CP1 lithium batteries.
Like all the other models in Nikon’s exceptionally
popular COOLPIX range, the E7900 and E5900
make shooting much more simple in a range of
common situations through the incorporation of
Scene Modes. The E7900 and E5900 offer four
Scene Modes that feature Scene Assist and there’s
also a new Underwater Scene Mode that brings the
total choice of Scene Modes up to 16. Intended for
use with the Waterproof Case WP-CP4, the

Simply select the Scene Mode that best matches the
subject, then point and shoot for optimal results —
it really is that simple. Both cameras are also ideal
for capturing action too. Both the E7900 and the
E5900 have the power to record VGA-size movies
with sound at a smooth rate of 30 frames per second.
Perhaps one of the most impressive features of both
the E7900 and the E5900 is Nikon’s innovative DLighting function, which adds light and detail to dark
areas of shots, while keeping brighter areas just as
they are. Nikon’s In-Camera Red-Eye Fix function
is another advantage that allows the quality of the
shot to be improved after the fact — automatically
detecting, then correcting red eyes in-camera to turn
shots affected by flash into pleasing night portraits.
In addition to these exceptional features, the E7900
and E5900 also feature a handy Blur Warning
function too that alerts the user immediately whenever
an image is blurred due to camera movement. This
enables the user to recompose and shoot again
before leaving the scene of the shot. The BSS function
(Best Shot Selector) is also beneficial in similar
circumstances — it allows the photographer to take
several shots, then the camera selects the best of
them for the user to save.

Both of these cameras even look great too — with
the E7900 to be available in both black and silver

The COOLPIX 7600 is also surprisingly simple to
operate. Compact dimensions and a well-designed

by name or by icon according to their tastes.
What’s more, the COOLPIX 7600 also features a

there’s no need to worry if you haven’t had time
to read the manual! The COOLPIX 7600 is also
more easy to use for people around the world, as
the menu can be displayed in a total of 12

A 7.1 effective megapixel digital camera with a 3x optical Zoom-Nikkor
ED lens and functions that correct images in camera!
Tokyo — Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce
the introduction of the COOLPIX 7600. An easy-tooperate digital compact that combines 7.1 effective
megapixel clarity with functions that improve images
in-camera, the COOLPIX 7600 enables users to feel
more confident about taking pictures.
7.1 effective megapixel performance gives the user
a head start in producing pleasing results, delivering
a resolution significantly higher than most other entrylevel digital cameras. Furthermore, the 3x optical
Zoom-Nikkor ED lens equivalent to a 38-114mm lens
in 35mm format enables Macro shooting as close as
4cm (1.6 inches), while its ED glass element leads to
superior sharpness and optimal color correction.
Such factors are a great advantage on their own,

further still, with a selection of innovative Nikon
functions. Nikon’s exclusive D-Lighting function is
available in Playback mode for use on images with
excessive backlight or insufficient flash. At the touch
of a button, D-Lighting keeps bright areas bright,
while automatically adding light and detail to the
darker parts. Face-priority AF is another key advantage
of the COOLPIX 7600. Available in Portrait mode,
this clever capability has the power to automatically
find and focus on people’s faces to ensure sharpness
exactly where it is needed. There’s also In-Camera
Red-Eye Fix — a function that can detect the annoying
red eye effect sometimes caused by flash and correct
it in-camera to leave you with pleasing night portraits.
And last, but definitely not least, there’s Blur Warning
too, which alerts the user whenever a shot is
compromised by camera shake, allowing another
shot to be taken before leaving the scene.
Like all other cameras in the popular COOLPIX
lineup, the COOLPIX 7600 features a selection of
handy Scene Modes that make operation even
easier still. All the user has to do is select the
Scene Mode that most closely matches the subject,
such as Sunset or Portrait — the COOLPIX 7600
then takes care of selecting the optimal settings
for the best results. Four of the Scene Modes
feature the additional advantage of Scene Assist
too, which makes it easier for virtually anyone to
achieve more appealing composition. And new
to the COOLPIX 7600, there’s also a BSS copy
function available in Copy mode, which
automatically activates the BSS function to achieve
the best possible results.
As well as taking great still images, the COOLPIX
7600 offers movie shooting capability too. The
user can choose from a selection of five movie
shooting modes, two of which can shoot movies
at a smooth 30fps. Furthermore, the COOLPIX
7600 features Nikon’s new Electronic VR (Vibration
Reduction) function, which can be activated during
movie shooting to achieve more stable results

when it is difficult to keep the camera steady. The
COOLPIX 7600 can also be easily connected to
a TV too, making it easy to enjoy the results with
friends and family.
A choice of five Color Options allows the user to
be a little more creative with their picture taking,
enabling them to select one before shooting to
change the mood of an image by making it sepia
or shooting in cyanotype, for example. The
COOLPIX 7600 is also compatible with SD Cards,
which are widely available and can store a large
number of high-quality images. The COOLPIX
7600 additionally has approximately 14MB of
internal memory too, enabling images to be
recorded even when the user is not carrying any
additional media.
Whenever the user wants to make a printout, the
COOLPIX 7600 makes that easy too. PictBridge
compatibility makes it possible to print directly to
a compatible printer without the need for a
computer. The COOLPIX 7600 also offers the
added convenience of being able to select different
print sizes actually on the camera. And like all
other cameras in the COOLPIX lineup, the COOLPIX
7600 comes complete with Nikon’s proprietary
PictureProject software that offers a wide range
of versatile functions and is extremely user friendly.

YOUR ESSENTIAL TRAVEL TIPS
YOUR ESSENTIAL TRAVEL TIPS
PHOTO: JERRY LAM YAN YU - COOLPIX 5700
BE PREPARED
It is essential to be well prepared for all trips. One
thing which you should not be stingy on is the extra
batteries. It is always good to have one or two extra
sets of batteries in your bag at all times just in case
your batteries go flat in a time where you are about
to take one of the most memorable moments.
Besides the batteries, you should have ample memory
cards. If you are a serious shutter bug, you should
not expect a 256MB card to last you on a one week
trip if you expect good quality JPEG images. You
may consider if you would like to bring along an
image tank or a laptop to download your images.
Another thing to look out for is the power supply in
the hotels you are going to stay in. This is very crucial
especially for digital users as this is the means to
have your batteries charged at the end of the day.
If you are a film user, you may like to check on the
weather condition and decide what film to bring
along. If it is a wet season, you should consider
bringing higher ASA rating film along to achieve a
faster shutter speed to minimize camera shake. ASA
400 is ideal in this case. Nonetheless, it is always
good to have a few rolls of fast films on the ready.
Probably the worst scenario you can face is you
have a chance to take a photograph with your
darling with a splendid sunset setting, but the chance
is ruined either by a flat battery running out of
memory space or film.

Regardless whether you are traveling with a travel
agency or on your own, it is always good to do
some reading on your holiday destination and your
planned itinerary. Certainly, you need not go to the
extent of uncovering the thousand year old history
of that place or where to find that hidden treasure
in some caves. You should at least know where are
the hotspots you will be going to and be mentally
prepared. This will help you get prepared for your
shooting. Of course, it will be good once in a while
if there are some unexpected surprises to add some
excitement. For the SLR or DSLR users, you should
plan what additional lenses to bring along, and for
Coolpix users, you may like to consider if you require
that super wide or tele adaptor for your lenses.
GETTING THAT GOOD SHOT
It is sometimes possible for amateurs with little
knowledge on the fundamentals of photography to
capture great shots probably out of luck. It is good
to read up a bit on the basics of photography like
what is aperture, shutter speed, ASA rating,
composition rules and the list goes on. You may
consider picking up a photography class where you
shall learn it better or borrow a book from the library
and learn it on your own. Whichever way is great
as long as it works for you.
With today’s technology and with the right settings,
it is unlikely to get exposure problem with the highly
advanced Program or Custom modes. What you
have to take note of is the camera shake issue, which
is one of the most common problem. One golden
rule to minimize camera shake is if you are shooting
handheld, your shutter speed should be at least
1/focal length, which is your “zoom”.
Say, if you zoom your lens to 100mm, you may like
to check if your shutter speed is at least 1/90. By
the way, when we mean 1/90 for the shutter speed,

it will appear as 90 on the LCD screen. The number
with a “f” beside it is the aperture. If the shutter
speed appears as 1”, it means one second for the
shutter speed. Hence, for the benefit of the beginners,
if you see settings like 60 f3.5 on your LCD screen,
it means shutter speed of 1/60 with aperture f3.5.
If you want to freeze those moments, the faster the
shutter speed, the more ideal. And if you are shooting
handheld, the golden rule is to check if the shutter
speed is 1/focal length. If it is not, set to a higher
ASA rating for digital users and for film users, you
may consider changing film.
You may ask how to ensure getting that fast shutter
speed. One of the better ways with Program mode
is the use of higher ASA rating to achieve it. You
have little choice as the Program mode is designed
to enable you to get a faster shutter speed most of
the time with a big aperture most of the time. Hence,
for once, you may like to set aside all those technical
jargons, use the Program mode happily with this
workflow.

YOUR ESSENTIAL TRAVEL TIPS
OK, GO FOR IT
PHOTO: BRENDA ANG
The above should provide you with sufficient survival
tips to have an enjoyable holiday photography
session. In the meantime, plan your holidays with
your loved ones and do some reading on the place
you are going, and of course, read a little on the
fundamentals of photography. You may also explore
the idea of getting another camera for your loved
ones or family so that you can shoot together. Enjoy
shooting.

FEATURED PHOTOGRAPHER - JIMMY LAM
FEATURED PHOTOGRAPHER - JIMMY LAM
PORTFOLIO : JIMMY LAM
Jimmy Lam is known for his documentary work on
the tradition, culture and people of Asia. He has
travelled to many places in Asia, including China,
Tibet, Vietnam, Thailand, Burma, Laos, Cambodia,
India, Pakistan, East Timor, Malaysia and Indonesia. He has been published internationally, including a
recent monograph on Greater Tibet (Marshall
Cavendish, 2005). This book focuses on a region in
China, that is little known and often mistaken by
people.
Lam has been photographing for the past twelve
years. He studied at the International Center of
Photography in New York, and some of his instructors
included renowned photographers such as Sam Abell,
Ed Kashi, Mary Ellen-Mark, Dennix Cox, and Harvey
Stein, and photo-editors in New York. He continued
to stay in touch with several of them, and they have
continued to be his mentors since.
He concentrates all his effort in building complete
and compelling bodies of work. While single images
need to be strong, he feels that what is even more
vital is that the images should come together as a
cohesive story. He has complete bodies of work on
South-West China (vanishing moments), Western
China (culture of six different ethnic groups), Passage
through Vietnam, Pakistan, East Timor (a society in
transition), the widows of India, and Greater Tibet.
On his trip, he carries with him two F5s, one F100,
17-35 mm, 80-200 mm, 55mm, 85mm lenses and
Nikon SB flash system.
His works on Greater Tibet will be exhibited at the
Photographers' Gallery at MITA building, Singapore
during the Arts Festival in June and if should you wish

IT SHOW 2005
10 – 13 MARCH 2005 • SICEC
A dramatic increase in the number of visitors
in this year’s IT Show, estimated at 560,000
visitors as compared to last year of 450,000,
marks as one of the largest Digital, IT and
Consumer Electronics Exhibition.
Topping our sales chart was our ever-capable

our best seller for all our past shows ever since
its launch a year ago and it is still going strong.
Followed closely behind were our newly
launched Coolpix 4600 and Coolpix 5600,they
too were all snapped up throughout the 4 days
event.
This exhibition was deemed as our best show
so far with the highest sales turnover as it was
made possible through the cooperation of our
