Dear Friends,
Many of you are stalwart supporters of the
School with annual gifts that enable us to help
students with financial need, travel programs,
design-build equipment purchases and other
enrichments of the student experience. We
are grateful for this ongoing generosity - its
beneficial impact on daily life in the School is
felt by many. This year, thanks to your gifts,
we have purchased new laser cutters and our
first 3-D fabrication machine!
Your gifts continue to be important to the
School as the University focuses fundraising
on the Momentum2 Campaign. The
special effort of a campaign builds on the
support you already provide, encouraging
us to set our sights on a long-distance
larger ambition, that periodic leap, the
special infusion, that changes the entire
School’s performance.
It is no coincidence that within five years
of opening the Jorge M. Perez Architecture
Center, the School of Architecture
appeared for the first time among the
top twenty architecture programs in the
DesignIntelligence annual survey. The
School’s students and faculty achievements
merit the chief credit for this new recognition.
But it must be acknowledged that visitors
from around the world, as speakers and
conference panelists in Glasgow Hall,
have helped spread the word about their
experiences with our students and faculty in
this impressive setting.
And so once again we take stock to
determine that next big step for the School.
For Momentum2, we have set our sights on
several advancement goals: support for areas
of curriculum focus such as design-build, real
estate development and sub-tropical design;
research funds and professorships to help us
retain our outstanding faculty; scholarship
support for students in their advanced years
of study; and an addition to our historically
designated facilities with a state-of-the-art
studio space.
Several of you have given me advice about
how to address potential donors, including
that it is important to make evident the
School’s impact on the profession and
society. There are of course many instances
in which the work of the faculty, staff
and students has benefited our regional
community and even communities abroad.
From the Hurricane Andrew charettes, with
many of our innovative ideas realized two
decades later, to the most recent designs
for a clinic and a school in Haiti currently
under construction, we can point to many
good works.
But the real multiplier of benefit belongs
to our alumni. Over 3000 graduates

of alumni engagement both in geography
and employment, as well as in the focus and
excellence of achievements. I hope that you

MOMENTUM2 CAMPAIGN
As part of the University-wide Campaign, the School’s fundraising goal is $6.125 million. At the date of this printing we have crossed the 30% mark, with a number of major
commitments pending. Leading us in seeking funds are two Miamians whose attention to the School is much appreciated, Jorge M. Perez and Gilberto Neves. Here are their
stories: Jorge Perez, a long-time supporter whose dedication to the School and the University have been invaluable; and Gilberto Neves, a newer friend, already involved in the
classroom and encouraging the School’s global reach.
GILBERTO NEVES
JORGE M. PEREZ
Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of The
Related Group, Jorge M. Perez is the nation’s leading
developer of multi-family residences. TIME magazine
named him one of the top 25 most influential Hispanics
in the United States.
While The Related Group is recognized for its luxury
high-rise developments and visionary mixed-use
urban centers, Perez entered the development
industry first as a planner and then as a developer of
affordable housing.
At the forefront of South Florida’s urban evolution,
Perez was among the first developers to enter the emerging market of downtown
housing in Miami. His commitment to urban communities is reflected in his involvement
in the arts and cultural affairs. He has been on the board of the National Endowment
for the Arts; Chairman of the Miami-Dade Cultural Affairs Council, and he is a board
member of the Perez Art Museum Miami.
Perez is a trustee at the University of Miami. His leadership of the 2002 Campaign
enabled us to reach many of our goals, chief among them the Jorge M. Perez
Architecture Center. As the chair of the School’s Visiting Committee, he has been
a thoughtful and energetic supporter of the School’s evolution. We are grateful
for the hours he has devoted to the School, as well as Related’s role in hiring the
School’s graduates.
As President and Chief Executive Officer of Odebrecht
USA, Gilberto Neves is responsible for the company’s
corporate strategy and operations in the United States.
Mr. Neves was a member of the team that founded
Odebrecht USA in 1991, and has played a key role in the
company’s significant expansion as one of the leading
general construction and construction management
firms in Florida and the Southeast United States.
Prior to his current position as CEO, Mr. Neves served
as Odebrecht USA’s Executive Vice President and was
a Senior Project Executive for many major projects
in South Florida, including the expansion of Miami
International Airport’s South Terminal and the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing
Arts, and the expansion of Miami International Airport’s North Terminal, the largest
contract ever awarded for public construction in Miami-Dade County and one of the
largest airport construction projects in the world.
With a degree in Civil Engineering, from Kennedy Engineering School in Belo Horizonte,
Brazil, Mr. Neves began his career at Odebrecht USA’s parent company, Construtora
Norberto Odebrecht, Latin America’s largest construction firm, with its headquarters in
Brazil. He has worked for the Odebrecht organization for 26 years. Mr. Neves is a Enterprise
Florida board member, Latin Builders board member and Florida International University
Leadership Board. He has participated in School of Architecture programs, including
lecturing in the real estate development program, and his two children are UM students.

MOMENTUM2 DONORS
The first Momentum Campaign, begun in 2001
brought record levels of support from alumni
and friends of the University of Miami. The
institution’s success and ongoing aspirations
continue to attract support.
To maintain this momentum, the University
launched Momentum2 in the spring of 2012,
with campaign goals to enhance learning,
to transform lives, to advance insight. The
School of Architecture has a campaign goal of
$6.125 million.
School of Architecture goals include
scholarship support, a named professorship for
distinguished faculty, new state of the art studio
space, expanded study abroad programs,
curriculum offerings in real estate development
and interior design, and digital resources which
include the New Urbanism archive.
Some School of Architecture’s donors whose
gifts are supporting the Momentum2 effort
underway are highlighted here.
Marjorie Korach - A large gift in memory of
her husband, Irvin Korach, well known, highly
respected Florida architect. The Irvin Korach
Architecture Gallery is located in the Jorge
M. Perez Architecture Center. The gallery
is visited by numerous individuals viewing
our exhibitions, attending our receptions and
participating in design reviews.
Coastal Construction Company - A gift
to the DesignBuild program to enable the
School to build a covered outdoor work area
for DesignBuild projects. After three studios
worked on projects in the Florida outdoors, it
became apparent that a covered outdoor space
to protect students and faculty from the South
Florida weather was needed.
James Deering Danielson Foundation - The
Deering Foundation is supporting the Mark
Hampton Lecture Series over several years.
Professor Allan Shulman has crafted a series
of lectures and symposia focused on midcentury modern architecture across the state
of Florida. The funds have assisted in research
and conferences exploring this period of tropical
architecture.
W. Bob Miller of First Florida Building
Corporation - Funding the Billy E. Miller
DesignBuild Professor for the 2011-2012
academic year. Miller’s gifts to fund the
faculty position for a semester in addition to
his continued gifts to the DesignBuild Program
have significantly enhanced the DesignBuild
experience for the students.
Jay W. and Elizabeth Lotspeich – The
Lotspeich gifts to the DesignBuild studio
program over the years have played a
meaningful role in establishing the program.
Jay and Beth’s generosity continues to add
much needed equipment and materials to
the program. We were deeply saddened this
summer to learn that Jay passed away. He will
be remembered by those at the School who
knew him as a generous donor who had our
highest admiration.
Bruce and Martha Clinton - The Clinton
Family Foundation has helped the model shop
with gifts to purchase cutting edge fabrication
equipment. In addition to support for the
shop, Bruce and Martha Clinton have funded
scholarships for upper level undergraduate and
graduate students in the School.
The Villagers Inc. – Scholarship funds from The
Villagers have supported historic preservation
efforts at the School for many years. The latest
gift from The Villagers will support the work
of Ellen Uguccioni and students in planning
the establishment of a website documenting
historic structures in South Florida.

SOA REAL ESTATE PROGRAM NOW ENTERING ITS FIFTH YEAR
This year, the students attended a variety
of conferences, including the Urban Land
Institute (ULI) Fall Meeting in Los Angeles
and the Congress for the New Urbanism 20
Conference in West Palm Beach. In May, the
program hosted a conference on Real Estate
Development and Urbanism for the students
and for the Association for Real Estate and
Tourism Development (ADIT Brasil), a real
estate group from Brazil.

The School’s Master in Real Estate
Development + Urbanism (MRED+U) Program
began in the fall of 2008. It has become a
successful interdisciplinary one-year graduate
program that combines faculty and students
from the Schools of Architecture, Business
Administration, and Law.
According to Dr. Charles C. Bohl, Director
of the program, “This year, we had 13
students from all over the world graduate
from the program, which now has 46
alumni working in a wide variety of real
estate development positions throughout
the U.S. and abroad.”
The students also entered three rigorous
competitions: the Urban Land Institute (ULI)
Gerald D. Hines Student Urban Design
Competition, the Collegiate Real Estate
Challenge by the National Association of
Industrial and Office Properties (NAIOP), and
the 2012 CASE Competition organized and
hosted by the Alumni Association of the MIT
Center for Real Estate (AACRE).
MRED+U and the School’s Master in
Urban Design students collaborated in
a Community Design and Development
workshop as their Capstone Project. They
studied the Miami Beach Convention
Center site and city-owned properties on
Lincoln Lane that are currently the focus of
redevelopment efforts. The final proposals
were presented to City of Miami Beach
Assistant City Manager and SOA alumnus
Jorge Gomez (BARCH ’81).
As part of the program, MRED+U students
have the additional learning opportunities of
both mentorship and internship programs.
The mentorship program allows students to
visit with a successful real estate developer,
in some cases a MRED+U Advisory Board
member. Mentors meet with the students
for a tour of one of their developments, and
by phone or through email as frequently as
they wish. Eighty percent of the program’s
students work with one of the 14 mentors of
the program. Sixty five percent have either
an internship or a full/part-time job in the
real estate field.
The MRED+U program offers courses
outside of the Masters program for those
interested in the field. Steve Nostrand,
Adjunct Professor, will teach a course next
spring for business people who would like to
become developers, “Introduction to Urban
Commercial Real Estate Development
for Non-Developers.”
This intensive
introduction to real estate development
communicates the basic skills necessary to
be a successful developer and examine the
required capabilities, an interactive seminar
with comments, questions and ideas as an
essential ingredient.
Other executive education programs
available to real estate professionals are the
National Charrette Institute (NCI) Charrette
System Training, and the New Urbanism
Online Course, which allows individuals to
learn the principles and practices of New
Urbanism digitally at home or in the office.

INAUGURAL UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI REAL
ESTATE IMPACT CONFERENCE
The School of Architecture collaborated
with the School of Business Administration
in February to host the inaugural University
of Miami Real Estate Impact Conference
sponsored by the Kislak Foundation and The
Witkoff Group.
Keynote speaker Sam Zell, chairman of
Equity Group Investments, and The Related
Group’s chairman Jorge Perez opened the
conference with a conversation on Global
Capital & Real Estate Investment Trends.
They were followed by panelists and
speakers discussing topics such as Global
Urban Design & Miami 2020, highlighting
international trends in city design and
development, and focusing on trends in
commercial real estate and capital markets
and the relative implications for the South
Florida market.
This fall, Architecture and Business
Administration presented the symposium
“Workforce Housing in the New Economy,” a
half day seminar on October 4.

CONGRESS FOR THE NEW URBANISM CONVENES IN WEST PALM BEACH
The 20th annual Congress was held in
West Palm Beach May 9-12 and featured
speakers such as Leon Krier, Dr. Richard
Jackson, Richard Florida and School of
Architecture faculty, among others.
Dr. Charles Bohl, director of SOA’s Master
in Real Estate Development and Urbanism
program (MRED+U), served as Chair of
the Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU)
Florida Chapter for the past two years, and
served as the Program Chair for CNU20.
For the conference, he created and cocurated The Art of the New Urbanism
exhibition with alumnus James Dougherty,
MARCH ‘97 of Dover Kohl & Partners.
The exhibition was shown at the School
of Architecture this fall, and will form the
basis of a book by Bohl and Dougherty.

Victor Dover, MARCH ‘90 completed his
term as Chairman of the Board of CNU.
Professor Jaime Correa chaired the
international track and the academic papers
track. He also contributed to The Art of
the New Urbanism exhibition. Other faculty

Guerrero, Denis Hector, Victor Santana,
Adib Cure, Jean-Francois Lejeune, Dr.
Charles Bohl and Joanna Lombard.
Tony Garcia, MARCH ‘09 alumnus and adjunct
faculty, organized the DecoBike Bike-Share
program to provide a sustainable, alternative
form of transportation for all attendees.
DecoBike had several solar-powered bikeshare
stations and dozens of DecoBikes installed
at sites around the City of West Palm Beach.

SOA INVITES NATIONAL PARKS TRUSTEES
TO VISIT ECO-TENT PROTOTYPE
On July 6, trustees of the South Florida
National Parks Trust held their monthly
meeting at the School of Architecture. Their
purpose was more than the normal conduct
of business. It was to also hear from
Professor and Director of Undergraduate
Studies Rocco Ceo, students and others
involved in the construction of the EcoTent, the spring semester’s DesignBuild
project – and then to take a close look at the
prototype on the architecture campus. This
very special structure was commissioned
by Everglades National Park for a much
needed purpose.
Impressed by the beautiful design,
meticulous construction and the unexpected
size of the structure, the trustees and other
visitors climbed in for a closer look and more
conversation with project leaders Ceo, Billy
E. Miller DesignBuild Critic Jim Adamson and
members of the student building team.
Composed of fifth-year undergrads and
graduate students, the 11-member team
began working on the tent not long after
an Everglades National Park official called
the school looking for a possible student
intern architect. “They wanted someone
to work for the Park,” Ceo recalled. “After
suggesting some names, I also mentioned
our DesignBuild Studio and asked if they had
projects appropriate for our program.”
Everglades National Park had lost its
landmark Flamingo Lodge to Hurricanes
Katrina and Wilma in 2005. The South
Florida National Parks Trust agreed to put
up $17,000 to fund the prototype of a special
tent, ecologically sustainable and able to be
dismantled for hurricanes.
Before actually starting the physical construction
of the Eco-Tent, the students went through an
intense planning stage producing a design that
allows breezes to enter from every direction.
They drew sketches, created 3D computer
images, and built a scale model of their design.
When hurricane and mosquito seasons are
over, the tent will be taken apart and loaded
onto a truck for Everglades National Park,
where it will be reassembled and tested by park
officials. If it passes muster, an outside company
will build 20 to 40 more eco-tents, modeled
after the prototype designed and built by
UM students.
The 14-foot by 14-foot semi-permanent
structures will be used by campers from
November through May, and disassembled
for the Atlantic hurricane season, with only
their wooden platforms remaining.
Park officials hope the Eco-Tents will attract
visitors and campers to the park’s Flamingo
region, which lies some 36 miles south of the
park entrance.
There is a good possibility that our 2012
student builders will be among the first to
make a visit to the Park this fall. With their
instructors Rocco Ceo and Jim Adamson,
they include: Violet Battat, Hao Luan, Glenn
Laaspere, Kelly Sawyna, Carlo Guzman,
Michael Galea, Catherine O’Sullivan, Meagan
Sippel, Ruslana Makarenko, Giancarlo
Belledonne and Sam Vana.

STUDENTS WIN COMPETITION AWARDS
Seiji Anderson was the first University of Miami School of Architecture student to place in the
prestigious Lyceum Fellowship out of multiple entries from 15 different universities. According
to Dean Plater-Zyberk, this is “an important achievement” for the School. The 2012 competition
site at the Wells-Lamson Quarry in East Barre, Vermont, challenged students to design a
complex for an institution devoted to the arts.
The team of Taylor Shumate and Byram Wadia won one of three Honorable Mention awards for
their entry “Hurricane Stadium” in the AIAS “Crisis-Ready Stadium” competition. The entry was
on display at Forum over the New Year holiday in Phoenix.
SOA’S ROME STUDENTS WELCOME NEW UROME STUDENTS
The University of Miami’s new URome Program and its first group of 23 students visited with the
School of Architecture’s Rome Program students in January. The total group of 45, shown here
during a field trip to Rome’s sports complex Foro Italico, was led by Senior Vice Provost and
Dean of Undergraduate Education Dr. William Green and School of Architecture Rome Program
Director Carmen Guerrero (at top of photo). URome, the newest of UM’s Semester-on-Location
programs, is sponsored by the Department of Religious Studies and conducted in collaboration
with the American University of Rome (AUR).
Students Jose Vela, Luzyanis Fraga, Ernesto Morales, and Lisandra Nunez have won the
American Planning Association’s 2012 Gina Tirinnanzi Memorial Scholarship Award for New
Urbanism for their upper-level studio exercise from the fall semester of 2011. The studio
work (pictured above) focused on the research of Islamic religious principles and their typomorphological interpretation on cities and architecture under Professor Jaime Correa. The work’s
practical application was the production of an “Islamic Enclave” in the City of Coral Gables.
THREE STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS SPONSOR CAMPUS EVENTS
Extracurricular activities were led by the School’s three student organizations – The American
Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS), the Student Council, and the United States Green
Building Council Students (USGBCS).
The AIAS, under the leadership of student Jeremy Van Minsel and student advisor Sonia
Chao, held a barbecue to welcome and recruit new students. The second annual AIAS
Silent Auction on the night of the School’s 2011 Homecoming Reunion Barbecue was
another success thanks to co-chairs Ida Qu and Eric Rodgers. Sales from books, art,
and memorabilia raised enough money to send five AIAS members to national Forum in
Phoenix. In the spring, the organization sponsored a portfolio workshop led by Professors
Rocco Ceo and Oscar Carrera.
The Student Council, under the leadership of Audrey Barth, made sure that she and her board
kept the students well fed with bake sales between classes and sponsored the popular Black
and White Ball at Books & Books. At semester-end, they administered the voting by the student
body for the Faculty Member of the Year, Oscar Machado.
The Green Building Students was co-chaired by Audrey Barth and Ashley Drake. In addition to
taking part in “green” activities on campus, they worked to send representatives to Greenbuild,
the US Green Building Council’s annual conference and expo. They were able to send five
delegates to the conference in Toronto, Canada.
STUDENTS DISPLAY FURNITURE BUILDING SKILLS
A new course in designing and building wood furniture culminated in a one-day exhibition in
the Perez Center’s Irvin Korach Gallery. Instructor Austin Matheson, a master furniture builder
from the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Rockport, Maine, displayed two chairs, one in
the process of being built and the other a finished version. Student builders included Cedric

STUDENTS TRAVEL THREE CONTINENTS
Tour of Buenos Aires, Argentina
During Intersession this spring, Professors Jaime Correa
and Oscar Machado toured Buenos Aires with a group of
undergraduate and graduate students surveying its historic
neighborhoods, urban form, building types, its cultural history,
and studying its contribution to the overall development
of Italian, German, and Jewish cultural enclaves and the
diaspora in Latin America.
The Grand Tour of Europe: Paris, Venice, Florence, Rome,
Madrid, Athens & Greek Isles
During the summer, Professor Tomas Lopez-Gottardi led a
group of students from Architecture and other university
majors on his annual Grand Tour of Europe. The itinerary
followed the tradition of the Grand Tour of the XIX century,
when northern Europeans traveled to Italy and Greece to
learn about the cultures of antiquity. Class instruction was
given on site, focusing on the cities, their architecture and
history. The students traveled to Paris, Venice, Florence,
Rome, Madrid, Athens and the Greek Islands.
Open City Studio: Asia
From May to August, a group of architecture graduate and
undergraduate students, accompanied by Professors Adib
Cure and Teofilo Victoria, participated in the Open City
Studio and seminar which took place in Beijing, Nanjing,
Tibet, Shanghai, Seoul, Kyoto and Tokyo, tracing the
evolution of Chinese classical architecture. The photo, taken
on the ancient walls of Nanjing, China included students
and staff from UM, Notre Dame and Nanjing University, who
participated in the joint program.

THE SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION
WASHINGTON, DC
It may be unusual for Derek to be meeting with
actress Betty White at the National Zoo’s new
home for otters, but it is one of many meaningful
experiences in his work at the Smithsonian. The
construction of the new National Museum of
African American History and Culture underway on
the National Mall, is another current responsibility.
Ross is acting director of engineering, design
and construction for the Smithsonian Institution,
the largest museum complex in the world. He
is responsible for the physical plant of nineteen museums, the National Zoo, and nine
research centers located throughout the United States and Panama.
Many of the Smithsonian buildings are historic landmarks, so Ross’s work includes
renovation and restoration of older facilities as well as the design and construction of
new facilities. Most recently he worked on the design and construction of the hangar at
Dulles where the space shuttle is on permanent exhibit.
A high school shop teacher first guided Ross to study architecture at the University of
Miami, the foundation for a career having a national and indeed, international impact.

The Silva family is one of several architectural dynasties that have emerged from the
School of Architecture. Rolando Silva founded Silva Architects after he graduated from
UM. His wife, Irene Fraga, established Fraga Engineers. She is a Florida professional
engineer as well as a registered Florida architect.
From an early age, sons Alex and Andrew worked at Silva Architects starting with clerical
work then drafting and eventually designing. Family dinner conversations revolved
around the work of the day. In this family there was no way to avoid the topic of design.
Alex and Andrew realized they loved architecture while studying at UM and made their
career choice early. They have been working at Silva Architects since graduation;
Alex’s focus is design, project management and document preparation. Andrew’s is
schematic design, design development drawings and construction documents. Alex is
the immediate past president of the Miami Chapter of AIA.
This is not the end of this family’s story. Sister, Cristina, a UM graduate from the
College of Engineering, works with Fraga Engineers, and sister Laura is an engineer
with Florida Power and Light.

Concepts partner Andrew Cogar has led
teams for residential and civic projects. The
firm’s satellite office in a live-work building in
Glenwood Park was one of Andrew’s designs.
Recently, Andrew served as a contributing
author for the firms’ book on its work in the
South called “Coming Home”, published
by Rizzoli.
Before entering the Master of Architecture
in Suburb and Town Design program at the
School of Architecture, Van Cotthem worked
as coordinator for the Public Space Design
Studio in Bogota, Colombia, collaborating with
Mayor Enrique Peñalosa on a now famous
transformation of public spaces designed and
built for the city’s underserved communities.
Andrew has taught, lectured and served as a
guest critic at the University of Miami and Georgia Institute of Technology. In addition,
he was instrumental in starting the Historical Concepts Scholarship at UM, awarded
to outstanding architecture students for design excellence and contribution to positive
studio culture.
Andrew is an elected member of the National Board of the Institute of Classical
Architecture & Classical America and Board Member of the Southeast chapter; he is
a founding member of the Atlanta Chapter of the Congress for the New Urbanism, a
member of the American Institute of Architects; and previously served as an officer
with the Army Corps of Engineers and Georgia Army National Guard. His military
service included tours in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Iraq.

Seven50: Southeast Florida’s Prosperity Plan
(seven counties, fifty years) is the ambitious
creation of the Southeast Florida Regional
Partnership, a collaboration of more than 200
public, private, and civic stakeholders, gathered
to plan for the long term environmental and
economic sustainability of the region.
Who better than Victor Dover and Joe Kohl, to
lead such an ambitious citizen-based visioning
and planning effort? Dover Kohl is reknown
for public design charrettes, detailed master
plans, and illustrative codes that emphasize
complete neighborhoods as the basis for
sound communities. The firm’s expertise lies
in balancing the ‘civic art’ of planning with
the community consensus needed to make
projects succeed. Their plans focus on smart
growth, emphasizing the mutual inclusiveness
of livability, economic prosperity, and
environmental concerns.
Kohl and Dover arrived at the University of
Miami with freshly minted B.Arch. degrees from
Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University; they were encouraged by then
Dean Thomas Regan to become the School’s early adopters of emerging computer
technology for design. Founding their firm in 1987, they translated the imaging
techniques developed for cosmetic surgeons into the imaging of proposed building
designs in their urban context. They soon realized that the context often needed
design also, and returned to the University of Miami to complete the Master of
Architecture in Suburb and Town Design.
Founding members of the Congress of the New Urbanism (CNU), Kohl and Dover
through their professional work, widespread lecturing and publication, have had a
global impact on community design and revival. Kohl is a board member of the FormBased Code Institute, and participates in several South Florida civic groups. Dover,
last year’s national chair of the CNU, is a board member of the CNU, the Form-Based
Code Institute and the National Charrette Institute.
Upon graduation from the Suburb and Town Design program Felipe joined the
Planning Department of the City of Miami evaluating and regulating complex urban
projects for the urban design section for three years. A highlight of his career
was active participation in the promotion and adoption of a new code of urban
development for the City, applying the principles of smart growth, community
building and new urbanism. In 2005 Felipe returned to Colombia where his
practice is thriving, focused on architecture, urban design and landscape design.

An expert in sustainable urbanism, urban
redevelopment, sprawl repair, and form-based
codes, Galina Tachieva is a partner at Duany
Plater-Zyberk & Company, Architects and Town
Planners (DPZ) where she directs the design
and implementation of projects in the US and
around the world. Tachieva is the author of
the Sprawl Repair Manual, an award-winning
publication by Island Press, which focuses on
the retrofit of auto-centric suburban places into walkable mixed use communities. She
leads the Congress for the New Urbanism Sprawl Retrofit Initiative.
Galina received her degree in architecture from the University of Architecture and Civil
Engineering, Sofia, Bulgaria and came to the University of Miami for graduate studies.
She has lectured at the University of Miami, at Harvard, as well as universities in
Brazil, Italy and Norway. Galina is a founding member of the Congress for European
Urbanism, a board member of the New Urban Guild Foundation and the Transect
Codes Council. She is certified by the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP)
and by the US Green Building Council as a LEED-Accredited Professional.

Following his graduation from the University of
Miami, Muhammad Hamdan Ahmad completed
his PhD at the University of Manchester in 1997.
Subsequently he joined the Department of
Architecture, Faculty of Built Environment, Universiti
Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) where currently he holds
the position of full Professor, teaching all levels
of design studio. Hamdan also supervises PhD
candidates researching sustainability. His research endeavors have led to his development
of the Tropical Solar Chimney, the Doors House for the Poor, and the Tropical Daylighting
Guidelines. His most recent research focus is Smart Envelopes Design for the Tropics.
Hamdan is Executive Director of the Institute Sultan Iskandar (ISI) of Urban Habitat
and Sustainability, a research based and idea consultancy center focusing on the built
environment and sustainability. Prior to heading ISI, he was the Deputy Dean for the
Faculty of Built Environment, UTM. He serves on various committees and accreditation
panels, as well as advisory study boards to maintain quality architecture education in
Malaysian universities. He is member of The Malaysian National Council of Professors
(MPN) on a Sustainable Built Environment and a member of the Malaysia Green
Building Confederation (MGBC).

Sophia Jones’s current architecture project
is the interior restoration and adaptive use of
Iviswold Castle, built in 1890 in Rutherford NJ.
Sophia is an Associate and Project Manager
at Historic Building Architects, LLC, a firm that
specializes in architecture, historic preservation
and materials conservation to help preserve and
interpret our shared cultural heritage. She is
involved in all phases of building documentation,
design, and construction, including conducting
building condition assessments, producing
schematic design through construction documents, and construction administration.
She also participates in writing preservation plans, historic structures reports, and
vision plans. Community involvement plays a significant role in Sophia’s practice; in
2006 she was appointed to the New Jersey Historic Sites Council, an advisory board
that reviews projects that adversely affect historic properties and encourages sound
preservation practices. She currently serves as Chair of the Council. Her firm also
recently received a 2009 NJ Historic Preservation Award and 2011 Faith and Form
award for the restoration of Saint Bernards Episcopal Church in Bernardsville, NJ, a
1897 Gothic Revival church damaged by fire in 2004.
Sophia Jones’s work supports community identity and exemplifies the respect for
traditions and cultural continuity that is characteristic of our School’s pedagogy.

The opportunities for women in the field
of architecture are boundless. Nati Soto
vouches for that. For 16 years she has been
president and majority owner of Ferguson
Glasgow Schuster Soto, Inc. a firm focused on
commercial and institutional projects as well as
design for the public sector. Soto is architect
of record for the Jorge M. Perez Architecture
Center at the School. She has served as
president of the Miami chapter of the AIA, is
currently Vice President of AIA Florida, and is a founding member of the AIA Miami
Women in Architecture, among her many civic contributions.
Soto attributes her professional success to her engagement of clients in active
participation in the design of their projects. With each new commission she establishes
a partnership between the client and the team personnel sharing in the goal of design
excellence. The results show in the firm’s work which figures prominently throughout
South Florida.
Mentored by the founders of her firm, including Stanley Glasgow, whose gift to the
School is remembered in the Stanley and Jewell Glasgow Lecture Hall, Soto has
continued the practice, mentoring architecture graduates in her firm, including her
daughter Alexandra Goldstein (BARCH ‘11), and through AIA Miami Women in
Architecture. Soto may downplay it, but as a woman business owner, she has long
been a role model for Hispanic women in architecture.

This group of 10 alumni led by John Forbes organize the School of Architecture
Annual Alumni Golf Tournament. The committee members’ fond memories of a golf
tournament some years ago, with classmates and members of the profession, inspired
them to repeat it. They manage all the preparation of the work to run the tournament.
This fall marks the fifth year of the tournament. The committee is completely
responsible for the increasing success of the event. Their generous gifts of time,
energy, solicitations, sponsorships and participation, have resulted in their having
raised more than $150,000. The tournament proceeds fund the Tom Spain Rome
Program Endowment which supports the School’s Rome facilities, including the library
and computer lab and museum fees for students attending the semester program.
This past year, at the recommendation of Robert Behar, the committee elected to use
a portion of the funds raised to give scholarships to three students who otherwise
would not have been able to participate in the program.

To introduce Harlem’s elementary school
students to their neighborhood’s past, present
and future, Hermes Mallea created a three year
program in design at PS161, with the support of
the Center for Architecture Foundation. Students
are asked to learn about their neighborhood
landmarks through drawings, architectural
models, photographs and walking tours. They
apply their newly acquired information to writing,
acting and creating short plays. Recently,
the students used their skills to explore the
transformation of their community in relation to Columbia University’s expansion into
the West Harlem neighborhood, Manhattanville. The students gathered information and
opinions concerning the proposed changes to Harlem’s social and built environment,
culminating with a public presentation of their own designs.
Mallea is co-founder and principal of M(Group), an architecture and interiors
practice in New York City. The firm’s designs have been featured internationally in
publications including The New York Times, Architectural Digest, Town and Country,
Arte e Decoracao (Brazil), World of Interiors (Britain), Moda de Hoy (Mexico), and
Stuff: The M(Group) Interactive Guide to Collecting, Decorating With, and Learning
About, Wonderful and Unusual Things, by Carey Maloney, Mallea’s partner.
Hermes has been featured among Architectural Digest’s AD100. After graduating
from Miami, Mallea completed a graduate degree in Historic Preservation at
Columbia University. He has produced a number of publications; his research of
Cuban residential interiors, carried out in part at the University’s Cuban Heritage
Collection, produced the book Great Houses of Havana: a Century of Cuban Style
(Monacelli, 2011).
Continuing his connection with the University over the years, Mallea is making a
difference through a design practice of recognized excellence and a varied civic
engagement. He is a board member of the Friends of the Upper East Side Historic
Districts and a member of the Council of the New York City Public Libraries.

Production designer for TV shows, Feature
films, commercials and music videos, Mark
Harrington chose to pursue projects in show
business early in his career as an architect.
After a few years in architectural firms, he
interviewed for the position on a Michael Mann
Movie “Band Of The Hand“ and was hired to be
the art director. Since then Mark has worked as production designer or art director
on 18 feature films, and 150 episodes of television.
As production designer for the popular television series Burn Notice since 2007, Mark
has designed a Miami bungalow, a loft on the Miami River, a cell block, a CIA office,
and an Ocean Drive cafe as standing sets, and creates new environments to shoot
each new episode. To design and build a set, Mark has to work quickly to satisfy the
7 day prep schedule for each episode, passing drawings on to a construction crew
and consulting with his decorator, bringing furnishings and accessories to match the
surroundings. Some of his time is spent visiting Miami’s neighborhoods identifying
buildings appropriate for filming future episodes.

Natalia Miyar is Head of Design for Helen Green
Design, a London firm focused on interior
design and interior architecture. She manages
a team of designers as well as a financial and
operations team.
At the University of Miami, Natalia continued
the education she started as an art history
major at Brown University. After graduation
she worked in Miami on luxury residential
projects in South Florida and the Caribbean.
In 2008, she moved to London. She has
continued her work on a larger scale and in a wider international market, working
on projects in London, Dubai and Barbados. Three years ago, Natalia joined Helen
Green Design where she has worked on a historic house designed by John Nash
on Regent’s Park, a variety of contemporary and Regency apartments in London,
as well as historic country houses, some dating from the 18th century. According to
Natalia the best part of her job is its diversity, designing for an interesting group of
clients located around the world.
Mark attributes much of his success to his early experience working with Laurinda
Spear, DPZ and Mark Hampton. Mark practices architecture with his wife Annabel
Delgado and partner Patrice Marbin Barrocas. They have an architectural firm with
award winning commercial and residential projects throughout South Florida.

An architecture degree may lead into a career
in real estate development. After graduation
from UM, Shawn Seaman continued his
education earning a Master of Architecture &
Urban Design and a Certificate in Real Estate
Design and Development from the University
of Pennsylvania. Following over six years
of varied experience in architecture, urban
design, town planning, and retail strategy with
projects throughout the United States, Seaman joined PN Hoffman in 2001, a leading
developer of mixed-use and residential urban infill projects in Washington, DC.
He is currently a principal of PN Hoffman and the senior project director for the Southwest
Waterfront Project, a mixed-use 3 million square foot, $1.5 billion public/private development
on the Potomac River in Washington, DC. He is managing the development team and all
aspects of the project including site control, management of master planning and design,
financing, zoning, permitting and construction. The project will break ground in early 2013.
Shawn finds time to be active in the DC arts and cultural community as a member of
the Washington Architectural Foundation Board of Directors and formerly serving on
the Studio Theater Board of Trustees.

In 1989, days after Hurricane Hugo damaged
many historic buildings in Charleston,
SC, residents seeking craftsmen skilled
in traditional crafts to do the restoration
work realized that there was a lack of them
available. In the summer of 2005, the American
College of the Building Arts, housed in the
historic 1802 Charleston District Jail, was
established to teach six traditional building
arts: stonecarving, architectural iron, masonry,
timber framing, carpentry and plaster.
Students complete a rigorous liberal arts
curriculum in addition to their craft training and
ACBA remains the only college in the country
offering a four-year bachelor’s degree in the
building arts. William Bates and David Payne,
UM School of Architecture graduates, joined
the faculty in 2005 and 2007 respectively. As
the Design Department of ACBA, their UM
Architecture experience directly translates
into the courses that they teach, including
drafting and drawing, architectural history,
architectural design, historic preservation, and
building construction. They also collaborate
on residential projects in Charleston.

interior designer, Jerome is designing high

H. Pratt (BARCH ’78) are partners at Bellin
and Pratt Architects LLC, a Coral Gables,
Florida firm they founded in 2004. The
practice includes single family homes, midrise apartments and high rise commercial
buildings. Much of their work can be found in

Scott Ford (BARCH ’87) was named
Executive Director of the Department of
Community and Economic Development at the
City of South Bend, Indiana where he oversees
a staff of 26. Before joining the City in 2012,
he worked in urban design and planning for
10 years in Washington, DC, London, Miami,
Rome, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles and Chicago.
He earned a M.Phil. in urban economics as
a Cambridge overseas Society Fellow, and a
M.Arch. from Notre Dame.
Rich Heisenbottle (BARCH ’85) founder and
principal of R.J. Heisenbottle Architects PA,
Coral Gables, Florida, continues to focus on
historic preservation projects. The Curtiss
Mansion in Miami Springs, Haulover Beach

Rich Jones (BARCH ’91) is Associate Vice
President of Facilities for the University of
Miami Facilities Design and Construction
Department. Working with him as University
Architect is Juan R. Rodriguez-Vela (BARCH
’91). Both are facilitating capital projects at
the School.
Eduardo Sardina (MARCH ’10) is working
with the interior design firm Thomas Pheasant
in Washington DC.
Thomas Verell (BARCH ’93) is with the
Army Corps of Engineers Office of the Chief
of Engineers doing contingency construction
in foreign countries for the US. Until recently
Thomas was based in Washington, DC; in July
he started a two year assignment in Korea.
Daniel Villa (MARCH ’04) worked for
three years with Fujikawa Johnson Gobel
Architects, Inc., in Chicago, designing high
rise condominiums. He practiced with a sole
practitioner, John Herrera Architect, PLLC, in
New York and has recently returned to Miami,

A Dedication Ceremony was held on
June 9th at The Young at Art Museum/
Broward County Library for the new
installation of public art I Love You,
designed and presented by faculty
members and artists Roberto Behar
and Rosario Marquardt of R & R
Studios. They created an ‘outdoor
studio,’ where children and their
families can read, create art, picnic and
enjoy the library’s popular storytelling
program. In addition to the 10-foot tall
alphabet letters that spell the phrase
“I LOVE YOU,” five brightly-colored,
flower shaped benches provide seating
for storytellers and audience in the 44foot diameter circular room, separated
from vehicular activity by landscape.
Roberto and Rosario envisioned
the seating/story telling area as an
iconic space – a secret garden where
imagination and creativity can take
flight. The works of Rosario and
Roberto have been included in more
than 200 publications worldwide and
presented in museums and art galleries
in America and abroad.
JEWISH HOLIDAY CREATES DESIGN COMPETITION “REIMAGINE THE SUKKAH”
CANSTRUCTION TEAMS BUILD CAN STRUCTURES FOR CAMILLUS HOUSE
Six modern versions of the Sukkah, a temporary shelter from the elements, graced the Foote Green in
front of the Richter Library on Tuesday, October 11, 2011 during the awards reception for “Reimagine
the Sukkah, a DesignBuild Competition.” UM Hillel organized and co-sponsored the inaugural event of
the Jewish holiday Sukkot with the schools of Architecture and Civil Engineering, the Miller Center for
Contemporary Judaic Studies, The George Feldenkreis Program in Judaic Studies, and the Lowe Art
Museum to honor the weeklong Jewish harvest festival. The winning selection was a “Sukkah for the
Modern Nomad,” built with milk crates by architecture students Mike Galea and Catherine O’Sullivan.
Coming in second place, with their “Jewish Star” sukkah design, was the team of architecture students
Samuel Vana and neurobiology major Samuel Cohen. This past fall the competition was repeated.
Organized by the School’s Center for Urban and Community Design (CUCD), five teams of UM
students and employees showed off their building skills by competing in the fourth annual CANstruction
competition. More than 1,200 cans, all of which were donated to the homeless at Downtown’s Camillus
House, were used. The winner and Juror’s Choice was the team calling themselves “Miami Wolves”
from the School of Architecture Graduate Students and the Graduate Student Association. Other
winners were for Structural Ingenuity – “Eiffel Tower” by the College of Engineering’s “U CAN Do It”
Team; Best Use of Labels – “Big Ben” by The School of Architecture staff; Honorable Mention – “Team
Awesome” by the School of Architecture undergrads and the AIAS chapter; and Honorable Mention –
“Studio 6” by the first-year undergrads.

As manager of Public Relations
and Special Projects for the School
of Architecture, Carolyn White is a
professional as well as a UM alumnus
who helps us in many ways. She believes
that her “public” is much larger than just
the School’s outside constituents. She
stresses that her role is to present the
University and the School in a positive light
to everyone – the University community
and administration, the faculty, the staff,
the students, the alumni, our readers,
colleagues on and off campus, guests,
donors, and other publics.
When you ask her about her numerous
activities, she will say that in the
simplest terms, she keeps track of all
of the positives about the School, its
administration, faculty and students and
then uses different methods to tell others
about those positives. Public relations is
communicating effectively in numerous
ways to all publics.
Carolyn graduated from UM’s School
of Arts and Sciences cum laude with a
bachelor’s degree in English and minor
in Art History. She spent much of her
career working as a bank vice president
in community relations and marketing.
She returned to her alma mater in 1999.
“Returning to campus,” she says, “was
like coming home, and communicating
with students is rewarding and attending
many meetings and academic activities in
architecture is like going back to college a
second time.”
Carolyn White’s responsibilites include
writing SOA newsletters, press releases,
and website news, as well as flyers and
postcards announcing events or news,
and SOA Bulletins. She works closely
with the UM Communications Department
in reporting news of interest to outside
publications. She also organizes the SOA
special events, the lecture series, the
Alumni Barbecue, and she assists faculty
with symposia and exhibits.
Carolyn maintains close relationships with
other UM departments to facilitate interdisciplinary activities, and she has mentored many students who have assisted
her work over the years.

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Miami
Chapter recognized three faculty members at
their Celebrate Architecture & Design Awards
Banquet in November 2011 Jose GelabertNavia, Managing Director, Miami Office, Perkins
& Will architects, accepted the Excellence in
Architecture – Merit Award for the firm; Allan
Shulman, FAIA, Architect of the Year; and
Sebastian Eilert, Sustainable Design Architect
of the Year. Student Catherine O’Sullivan was
named UM Student of the Year at the banquet.
Jim Adamson, was named the Billy E. Miller
DesignBuild Visiting Critic through a gift from
the First Florida Building Corporation and
its president W. Robert Miller, in memory of
Miller’s father. The gift funds Adamson’s position
teaching the DesignBuild studio.
Roberto Behar and Rosario Marquardt were
honored at the dedication ceremony of their
public artwork “I Love You” at Young at Art
Museum/Broward County Library. Behar was
a guest juror in the 2012 graduate studios final
reviews at the School of Architecture in Yale. In
September, his work will be part of Temporary
Structures, a show at the Walter and McBean
Gallery of the San Francisco Art Institute. In
collaboration with the School’s Master of Real
Estate Development + Urbanism and UM’s
Office of Community Engagement, he directed
the public art master plan charrette for the OpaLocka Community Development Corporation.
Dr. Charles Bohl served as Chair of the
Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU) Florida
Chapter for the past two years and also served
as the Program Chair for CNU20: The New World
conference held in West Palm Beach in May. For
the conference, he co-curated The Art of the
New Urbanism exhibition with James Dougherty
of Dover Kohl & Partners. The exhibition was
shown at the School of Architecture this fall before
traveling to other cities, and will form the basis of
a book by Bohl and Dougherty. In May, Bohl coorganized a Placemaking seminar and tour for
a group of real estate and design professionals
from Brazil in conjunction with the Association
for Real Estate and Tourism Development
(ADIT Brasil). He is currently consulting on
planning and urban design initiatives for the City
of Hollywood and a lecture series and study of
the downtown overlay district for the Business
Improvement District of Coral Gables.
Rocco Ceo served as a member of the
National Architectural Accrediting Board
(NAAB) accreditation team at Kent State
University this spring.
Jaime Correa chaired the international track and
the academic papers track at the CNU20 this
spring. He also contributed to the Art of the New
Urbanism exhibition at the CNU conference.
A team of students (see Student Life) led by
Professor Correa won the 2012 Gina Tirinnanzi
Memorial Award given by the American Planning
Association for the promotion of scholarship and
innovation in New Urbanism. He and Professor
Jean-Francois Lejeune participated in a
preliminary meeting of the long-term San Vito
Romano design workshop to be implemented for
the Lazzio region by the School of Architecture
and five European universities. They have
also been invited to assist in the formation of
the first International Editorial Board of FORMA
CIVITATIS, a peer reviewed international journal
for urban and territorial studies.
Adib Cure and Carie Penabad have been
named Louis I. Kahn Visiting Assistant
Professors at Yale University’s School
of Architecture for the spring of 2013. In
addition, they were appointed Associate
Masters of Stanford Residential College,
this fall. They have received the 2012
First Annual Addison Mizner Medal of the
Institute of Classical Architecture and Art
(Florida Chapter) for their Cape Dutch House
restoration in Coral Gables. At the CNU 20
Conference in May, Professor Cure presented
the paper “Off the Map: Informal Cities in
Latin America.”
Adjunct Professor Andres Duany presented
a morning lecture and afternoon roundtable
discussion “Heterodoxia Architectonica” on the
future of Classicism to the School’s students,
faculty and public in March. The event was
organized by SOA’s Center for Urban and
Community Design.
Sebastian Eilert (‘00) and
alumna Jane Decker (‘00)
have started a radio show
on 880 AM every Monday
morning at 11 a.m. Called
ArchiTALK. The hosts and
guests discuss questions
related to the business
of architecture. In addition, Eilert made a
presentation at the Coral Gables Museum, at
the request of the Consul General of Germany,
on sustainable architecture and the international
green building experience and leadership in the
United States and Germany.
Eric Firley presented a talk on his book The
Urban Towers Handbook at The Skyscraper
Museum in New York City in June. In August, he
spent two weeks at the Hanbury Evans Wright
Vlattas + Company Architects in Norfolk, Virginia
after winning their Virginia Design Medal 2012.
Jose Gelabert-Navia presented a lecture
on “The Regenerative Hospital” at the 2012
Healthcare Congress in Sao Paulo, Brazil in May.
Carmen Guerrero was named to the board
of directors of the Coral Gables Historic
Preservation Board. She has also been invited
to be guest curator for an upcoming exhibit at
the Coral Gables Museum which will highlight
the work of our professors and students for the
Museum’s celebration of Italian architecture.
Guerrero is assisting the University’s Director
of the Division of Continuing Education in
designing a new curriculum for the Interior
Design Certificate Program which would be
launched this fall.
Jorge Hernandez, Vice Chairman of the Board
of Trustees of the National Trust for Historic
Preservation, is the new Chairman of the
Diversity Task Force of the Trust. In a recent
issue of the Trust’s Forum Journal, he wrote on
“Miami Marine Stadium: Making the Case for
Exceptional Significance.”
Dr. Richard John gave the
opening talk “Postmodernism
and the Rediscovery of
History,” at the Reconsidering
Postmodernism conference
in New York. He edited The
Classicist No.9, the academic
journal of the Institute of
Classical Architecture and Art. This spring, he
was invited to serve as a guest juror for graduate
reviews at the University of Notre Dame School
of Architecture and he also served as one of the
three judges for the inaugural Mizner Awards of
the Florida Chapter of the ICAA.
Jean-Francois Lejeune was named to the
advisory boards of both the University’s Urban
Studies Department and the Center for Latin
American Studies. He served as a member of the
National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB)
accreditation team for the Harvard University
Graduate School of Design. He published an
essay “Schinkel’s Projects for Urban Houses:
Living all’antica in the New Bourgeois City”
in The Classicist No. 9, and presented three
lectures: on new contemporary public spaces at
the 2nd Annual Workshop Architecture of Urban
Fabrics in San Vito Romano, Roma; on “A Brief
History of the New World: Modernity in Latin
America” at the CNU 20 in West Palm Beach;
and on the Marine Stadium at the France and
Florida: Two Perspectives on the Preservation
of Modernist Architecture in Fighting for
Heritage and Conservation organized by the
Alliance Francaise of Miami. Recently, Lejeune
was appointed to the City of Miami Beach
Planning Board.
Joanna Lombard represented the University
at a presentation in honor of the 126th
birthday of Coral Gables founder George
Merrick. The event took place at the Coral
Gables Museum along with presentations by
other community leaders.
John Onyango’s paper “Dubai revisited: Are
New Planned Communities More Sustainable?”
in the ICE Journal on Sustainable Urban Design
and Planning (London). He has presented
papers during three international conferences
in Spain, Thailand and Scotland. He has
submitted a grant application with the National
Science Foundation for a three-year project “The
Application and Experimental Performance of
Passive Ground-Coupled Natural Ventilation
System in Hot Humid Climate.”
Joachim Perez won a 2011
NCARB (National Council
of Architectural Registration
Boards) grant for $10,000
for his proposal “Writing in
Architecture as a Professional
Endeavour.” The award was
presented to the School to
teach architecture students the importance of
communicating effectively with the written word.
Perez is Curator of Exhibitions at the School, a
role which began this summer. He also received
the faculty award of Part-Time Faculty of the Year.
Dean Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk was named Vice
Chairman of the U.S. Fine Arts Commission
in Washington. In November, she served as
a panelist at the conference “Reconsidering
Postmodernism,” sponsored by the Institute for
Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA) in New York
City. In May, she was the keynote speaker of
the CNU 20 conference in West Palm Beach.
Dean Plater-Zyberk and adjunct professor
Andres Duany received the Albert Simons
Medal, awarded annually by the Historic
Preservation and Community Planning Program
of the College of Charleston. They were
also honored by the Connecticut Architecture
Foundation at a benefit for the University of
Hartford’s Department of Architecture David
LaBau Memorial Scholarship Fund.
In addition to his award as Architect of the Year
of the AIA Miami Chapter, Allan Shulman was
also voted President Elect of the AIA’s Miami
Chapter, with his term starting in January 2013.
This November, he directed the first conference
made possible by the James Deering Danielson
Foundation in honor of Florida Modernist Mark
Hampton; “East West Dialogues – Modernism
in Florida” took place at the School from
November 16-18. Shulman served as the
principal author of the report designating
the Collins Waterfront Architectural District
to the National Register. His firm Shulman +
Associates’ has received several distinctions:
the Soho Beach House project was honored as
a finalist for the Urban Land Institute’s South
Florida 2011 Project of the Year; it was one of
five firms invited to present their concept for
“Reimagining the City: Breakers Avenue” at the
Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art; the Belvedere
House was featured on the cover of Florida
Design Spring/Summer 2012 issue; as pro
bono architect, S + A is working on plans for
the Audrey Love Gallery and Courtyard at the
Bakehouse Art complex.
