Facilita ng social and environmental design, passive technologies
are employed for an enjoyable energy efficient home.
Set at the confluence of two rivers on the rural-urban fringe, the gallery uses
materiality and rhythm to provide a pla orm of convergence and explora on.
The centre piece of a towns cultural explora on, both symbolically and
physically, the theatre offers a place of expression for all to see.
In an urban heart subject of change, the towers create a highly adaptable
structure, focused on change whilst s ll providing a pla orm for community.
Entwining old and new allowing ease of discovery and explora on of both
Vinolys visual arts facility and the town itself, a mixture of sugges on and
simple expression facilitates freedom of movement.
Bringing new life to three sites around the town centre that stand as part
of the towns history, and now its future. Using scale and local influences
to reintegrate the sites, new opportuni es emerge out of interest and
enjoyment.

Set as a compe on by the Concrete Centre, the ‘Eco House’
is to be located in south-east England. The design should look
to use concrete as a primary material, while crea ng the most
sustainable form possible, encouraging both environmental
and social well being. The design should house a family of four.

While the house provides technological aides to sustainability, the environment it sits within provides for a
desirable and sustainable place, both socially and environmentally. Open shared spaces allow freedom of
ac vity whether it is simply children playing from day to day or a communal bbq. The use of space also allows
light and air to flow in freely to the houses, their simple form being easily repeated to build communi es. The
aim is to facilitate and provide the pla orm for a sustainable life, avoiding dicta on and control.

Open communal areas, individual bedrooms with large deep set
windows and the thought out use of space provides a compact home
capable of housing an average family providing space for both privacy
and family life. Using hempcrete as a primary building material
along with a central light cowl the building takes advantage of
passive techniques, minimising human and energy inputs facilita ng
a sustainable home. The simplicity of design allows for quick
construc on and low costs.

In order for a home to
be sustainable it must
first be affordable,
and so one way to
facilitate low cost is
by pre-manufactured
components requiring
simple assembly on site.
This means that the
house becomes easily
adaptable during its
life me as components
can be removed and
replaced as desired.
This adaptability
furthers the ambi on
of sustainability by
allowing inhabitants
to customise and care
for their homes over a
longer life cycle.

The use of a concrete frame and hempcrete walls allows a high thermal mass through
out the building stablising internal temperatures. With hempcrete as a carbon nega ve
material the environmental impact of the whole building construc on is minimised. Under
floor hea ng creates an equal gentle warmth to be absorbed into the building fabric.

Looking out to the countryside, the rhythm of
the urban environment to the west is reflected in
the wall and glazing, allowing natural light deep
in, and views through out.
Set a few minutes walk from the busy town centre, the gallery looks
out into the countryside at the confluence of the rivers Cam and
Chelmer, as a green corridor creeps into the urban mass.

The first floor entry point, along the new bridge, elevated and
surrounded by water alludes to a sense of privacy and intrigue
within the building, further experienced as visitors move into the
galleries and then down to each lower level.

Full access to the roof terrace provides not just an exhibi on area,
but a public space, reaching over the water and raised above the day
to day rush. At the front of the gallery two previously separated river
crossings are brought together to create simple clear movement
across the river.

Each gallery offers a different atmosphere. From the waterside
pla orm, accessible from only the water and within the building,
its seclusion and surroundings as part of the exhibi ons
themselves. In contrast, the third gallery, buried in the
ground, is almost excluded from the very surroundings
the rest of the building works to embrace. The single
entrance point of this gallery, emphases the thought of
seclusion.

Roof Terrace
Providing views out to the
countryside, the space is en rely
open to the world, both urban and
natural. A single staircase provides
con nuous access for all.
Bringing people both down to the waters surface and up over it, the facilita on
of free movement stands shoulder to shoulder with freedom of expression.
Internally the gallery offers mul ple spaces of exhibi on, some shunning the
outside world, others bright and open, allowing views to pass en rely through.

A single unified bridge crosses both
rivers, and meets at the entrance of
the gallery. Day to day movement
here allows a natural discovery of
the building. The elevated entrance
adds to a feeling inside the building
of privacy, separated from the busy
town centre.
Once inside a central atrium connects
the two main floors, and brings light
deep into the floor plate.

Create a centre piece to Luton’s cultural Olympiad,
already the UK Centre for Carnival Arts has been
constructed, and more development is due. This new
piece should emphasise cultural expression, and make a
statement about the importance of culture to the town.

Set in the heart of the urban centre on a largley derelict site,
the theatre stands opposite the church and carnival arts
centre, across a busy inner ring road. Its form offering a new
landmark and striking statement of ambi on and expression.

visitor in below the main

Moving up two primary stairways guests
emerge in the central auditorium, the
heart of both concept and reality. Also
at this level are the main back of house
facili es and the visitor restaurant. Both
primary elements have been peeled away
from the tradi onal theatre arrangement
to open of the auditorium form for all to
see.
Centrally placed, but not the focal
point, the fly tower is encased in a
ver cal stripped wooden cladding,
its mul ple edges and grooves aiding
acous c protec on whilst the material
so ens its visual impact, and acts as
a back drop to the striking central

The Theatre
Set in the heart of the urban mass, fronted by a
busy inner ring road, and a few minutes walk from
the University, shopping Mall and town centre,
the theatre is a bold statement in both form and
life. Using the inherit form derived from func on
through the method of deconstruc ng the tradi onal
enclosed theatre arrangement, the highly angular
and irregular building has been created. The

house are pulled away from the centre piece to
reveal the auditorium as the heart of both a new
cultural district and building.

The container tower is a highly
adaptable, standardised design
allowing a high level of flexibility to
meet the needs of its residents. From
the residen al container modules to
the concrete slabs of the community
sec ons, each element can be
removed or placed as necessary to
adapt to changing requirements.
Using unused shipping containers,
of which there are millions out of
circula on across the world, the
aim is to create a building which is
capable of changing with a changing
popula on. Major redevelopment
in the town has signaled the scale
of these changes, with new student
accommoda on being built and
a large scale redevelopment of
the central train and bus sta ons.

Each tower is divided into three

community floor, this provides
an open space for gathering,
gardens and play in the sky.

end the structure allows for
adaptable layouts, including
sizeable plan ng to create an
environment desired by its

The construc on of Rafael Vinolys ‘Visual Arts Facility’ in
the east of the town centre signals the regenera on of the
area as a cultural quarter. Currently it is run down and poorly
connected to the surrounding areas. Integra on of the new
building will be key to the its success and enjoyment.

to the Roman walls. The strength of this historic thread is a key characteris c for crea ng new

Analysis of Area
1 Castle & Park Part of a poten al green link, the park
occupies most of the north east of the historic core.
2 Minories Currently an art gallery and rentable studios,
the ‘firstsite’ project team occupy here and are the
drivers behind the Visual Arts Facility (vaf).
3 Proposed VAF site Centred in the green, the vaf will
challenge the urban form but not impose itself, si ng
back from the busy street front.

away as part of major redevelopment
5 St Boltophs Church & Park The parkland backs on to

Inclusion, curiosity and freedom have become the central
principles of a design which hopes to capture the imagina on
of any who catch a whisper of the area. Inclusion, to allow all to
par cipate, whether it is the crea on of an art piece, the parttaking in an audience or simply to share a moment. Curiosity, to
provoke thought, enable the poten al to spark a thought and
enlighten or ennoble an individual. And freedom, to allow the
discovery of place, space and thought.

The large green open space is broken up by oversized
steps, lit from beneath, illustra ng the gradient while
crea ng a series of informal smaller spaces.
Green spaces are linked from St Boltolphs into the new
Queens Square by the removal of the outdated bus sta on.

The recent Changing Chelmsford Ini a ve has engaged local
communi es, business and industry to create a joint vision for
the town, and lay the founda ons for ac on. As part of this
project three key areas of value have been iden fied which
are either derelict or about to be abandoned.

Reinvigorated with life and ambi on
through the design of a new campus for
the expanding university. Key buildings
have been retained, such as the 1912 road
front building, the Art Deco office and
accompanying factory buildings and water
tower. These now house lectures rooms
and theatres, adminstra on offices and a
student bar. Across the site a new primary
route connects the train sta on with the
riverside campus and residen al areas
to the north. New commercial and light
industry units stand alongside the mul
storey car park providing for mul ple
ac vity through out the day.

The former University site has
laid derelict for several years.
The proposal looks to enable
movement and create both cultural
and commercial opportuni es.
A new underpass, wide and
overlooked by residences, provides
direct access from the south along
a key axis to the Anne Knight
building. This now stands as a small
local theatre fron ng on to a new
pedestrianised sta on square. The
rhythm of the viaduct is reflected
in the proposed built form along
with increased permeability of the
viaduct allowing cross movement.

Shire Hall
Unlike the other two sites here
the buildings are all in use, with
the Shire Hall its self due to be
vacated. This directs the focus
of design to the space between
them. To the west of the area
are the county council buildings,
to the north the Cathedral, and
then the Hall itself, currently
used as a magistrates court.
From this the thought of civic
society and its structure are
taken, and illustrated through
the use of materials, ligh ng and
arrangement.

Chelmsford Regenera on Masterplan Proposal
Three central concepts empower and
enliven the sites above, looking to the
historical significance of each, while also
thinking to the future. Together the sites
facilitate the towns iden ty through
ac ve urban environments, allowing
clear and simple freedom of movement,
readability of space and connec vity
with the wider area. The

Founded by myself and four friends, we aimed to ‘create a culture of architecture’. Within a month
we became the largest society at university and gained funding. We held several successful events
including a group trip to Bath, a guest speaker and a four day end of year event which included a
chare e, trip to the RIBA annual lecture and an exhibi on with local dignitaries and members of
industry in a endance.

Through my me at university I have not only learnt and experimented with methods of design
and research, but developed the skills and confidence to deliver them. My interest in the urban
environment keeps me highly mo vated and drives me to working towards full architectural
registra on, and to con nue to explore and create enjoyable and interes ng architecture.
2010-2011 Changing Chelmsford Ini a ve
Organised by the RSA, Essex County Council and Chelmsford Borough Council, the ini a ve is
working to engage communi es, local business, local authori es and industry with each other to
understand a joint ambi on and vision for the town. My involvement came as a representa ve of
archifunk and the university with efforts focused on improving rela ons between the university
and the local community which involved public speaking and a ending a series of visioning events.

Travel
This past summer I was fortunate to spend just over a month travelling across Europe. A good
friend and myself journeyed from city to city to discover new people, places and the architecture
we have studied. Our only condi on was to book our return flight leaving us to work out our
journey as we travelled.
Also this summer I joined a volunteer charity trip to Croa a to refurbish and decorate three
childrens hospitals. As part of the fund raising effort I learned to kayak and entered a na onal
student compe on.
