And my friends, they do it very well! I spoke to lead singer and founder of the band, Joe McFadden who told me, “We are a classic rock band and we like that the most. But everyone in the band comes from all different musical backgrounds and we are open and listen to all styles of music. But Classic Rock is what we really enjoy the best. We like to play any type of Rock that makes people move!” When you go to see Fuzzy Side Up, expect lots of good times, laughter and unpredictable fun! You can always count on a good show and Joe explained, “We live for the music and give it everything we’ve got. To us, it’s not just a cover band; it’s our passion.” All members of the band have been playing for more than 20 years, in a variety of venues and bands. Joe told me, “Although the line-up has changed here and there, the band has been playing consistently for more than 3 years now.” Joe started the band and kept making changes until he found members with talent and who were able to work well with each other. I asked Joe what people can expect when they go to see Fuzzy Side Up and he explained, “After introducing ourselves to the venue’s management, we set up our sound check and we’ll observe the crowd, and this is how we decide on which songs to open with. Once we hit the stage, we get in to our entertainment mode and never look back…one song in to the other, getting the audience involved and up dancing. On our breaks, we go around the room and chat with people; buy a few of our regular supporters a few drinks to show our appreciation, and then it’s back to work!” Joe told me, “Fuzzy Side Up is about having fun & making sure our audience goes home with great memories and smiles on their faces. Everyone in this band is grounded with no ego, and that is one of things I look for when I bring someone into the has original music. We haven’t had the time to really explore what we have and sit down to write, but we will be doing that. We are curious to put our heads together to see what we can come up with.” band. We are very friendly, Here are Fuzzy’s approachable guys and we next few shows: care about each other, the Sept, 18 – McStews audience and the venues we play. Are we perfect? Everyone in the band SideUp4! CIG (Chad I. Ginsburg – CKY) National Rock Star With Local Roots Releases His 1st Solo Album By Bullwinkle: Chad Ginsburg, the lead guitarist and backing vocalist of the West Chester -based heavy metal band CKY has just released his first solo album “Rock n Roll Alibis”. Ginsburg, better known to his fans simply as CIG, co-founded the nationally acclaimed band CKY in 1998. CKY is closely linked with, and their music was often featured on Bam Margera’s Jackass and Viva La Bam television series. The band has released four successful studio albums, and toured the world many times. Sadly, as often happens over time with many bands, the members decided to take different individual career paths. In a recent conversation with Chad, I asked him how his solo album came to be... ”In January 2014 after things with CKY went south, again, I was still very inspired and decided I would lock myself away completely, and wrote, recorded and produced a brand new CiG solo album, and I’m so very proud of it! I worked tirelessly on this album, and can’t wait any longer for you all to hear it. There were no fan fundraisers, delays or long waits. Since I produce, and make records, I didn’t need any help - this record is all me. I’ve written and recorded lots and lots of amazing new songs. The first CIG album is done! I wanted to bring my solo album to my fans without any BS or prelude. I can’t wait for you all to hear the album, and have already put a killer band together to tour the world starting this summer 2015 in support of “Rock n Roll Alibis”. This is gonna be a lot of fun, especially for my long lost CKY alliance friends. Please c heck out my new album and I will see you on tour!” Initially reviews by fans, and rock critics have been overwhelmingly positive. I myself recently wrote the following... “I expected the album to be r eally good, but it’s truly amazing, it’s beyond great. Very fresh, and it shows your hard work and passion. You’re not only a Rock Survivor, you’re an amazing Rock Innovator. Bravo Mr. Ginsburg or your solo release “Rock n Roll Alibis”. Ginsburg began playing guitar at the age of nine years old, having previously played the drums. He won his first guitar from a radio station, and later bought an Ibanez guitar based on Def Leppard guitarist Phil Collen’s model, which he says was eventually broken by a friend and sold. After initially taking lessons from a number of local instructors, Ginsburg later studied with Richie Kotzen. As a guitarist, Ginsburg draws inspiration from former teacher Kotzen, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Paul Gilbert and Yngwie Malmsteen; he has also indicated an affection for the band Black Sabbath. Many local fans may also remember Ginsburg from his nationally signed Philly based band “Rudy & Blitz” with band members Dante Cimino, and Dave Kloos. Chad was the producer/ engineer of “The Pipeline Radio Show” which OOT’s own Mike Vagnoni, and I created featuring local, national, and international talent. The Pipeline aired on a 50,000 watt Philly station, as well as K-Rock at the shore. If you haven’t yet heard the new album I highly recommend it, and you can get it now on cd, vinyl or digital at CIGmusic.com or “Rock n Roll Alibis” by CiG on Itunes or Google play. Follow Chad on Twitter @ChadIGinsburg and Facebook CIG. Look for Chad to bring his tour to the Philly area later this year. 9/12 - SABBATH TRIBUTE GET READY FOR EAGLES FOOTBALL!! $2.50 MILLER LITE 16OZ CANS AND FREE BUFFET!!! 8/28 8/29 9/4 9/5 ORIGINAL BIG MUSIC WHISKEY SHOWCASE DIME STREET JOKER 9/11 TOM’S ATTIC 9/18 STEAL YOUR FACE ELEVEN 9/12 INTO THE VOID SABBATH TRIBUTE 9/19 RAGTAG REBELS Volume 37 Number 12 • August 26, 2015 to September 16, 2015 • www.OOTONLINE.com Page 9 Page 10 Volume 37 Number 12 • August 26, 2015 to September 16, 2015 • www.OOTONLINE.com Tiffany Clegg from the Celtic Cross Tavern, NE Phila Photo by Mike Vagnoni This month meet up with Tiffany Clegg from the Celtic Cross Tavern,,,,she’s from the Parkwood area and works over at the Cletic Cross Tavern ,,, she’s one great gal behind the bar, Very outgoing and really loves her job, She’s a people person all the way.Tiffany has a great number of patrons who like to follow her when she works her shifts at the Celtic Cross, She knows how to treat her customers and it shows. Volume 37 Number 12 • August 26, 2015 to September 16, 2015 • www.OOTONLINE.com Music is Power I was left pondering the question, “Where is popular music trending too? These days, instead of having to really contemplate what type of music and which artists you’re going to invest your money and time into, most people simply go to the iTunes store or online DJ pool and pick individual songs without investing too much time, energy or effort. Pandora and iHeart Radio have taken over as the choice of people that are tapped in online and that seems to be everyone. Build your own playlist and now you are the DJ. But how different is that from making a mixed tape in 1990? It seems one of the results of this, is that experiencing music today is a lot like ordering the sampler at Applebees. You’re continuously moving on to the next thing on the plate and nothing is really any more lasting, memorable (or palatable) than anything else. Songs do not last that long as popular choices and 1% is hits. Less than that has staying power. Meaning you as a DJ will pull it out or have it ready to play 10 years from now. Maybe today’s music companies and pop artists have figured this out and have knowingly chosen NOT to invest in or encourage creation and development of any new musical styles, genres or “sounds”. The thing is-do we really have a taste for a music genre these days? Or do we just like the way something sounds? Music is loved for many reason, it creates memories. It brings us together for concerts as we dim the lights and shut off all our problems as 40,000 people jump up and down and jam to a favorite artist. Music is power and does that. Get in your car and tap in to your favorite sound and make that ride so much more fun and exciting listening to your favorite track, you know the one you have memories of from last weekend or ten years from now. All of us have memories based on music and it makes us feel a certain way, powerful right? How many times have you said “OMG I know where I was the first time I heard the Journey song” That is why I love this business. When I DJ concerts I love to watch the crowd when the main act goes on and just watch them zone to the vibe of the room. Conversely, among today’s popular music, I see very few artists attempting to break new ground and very little music that comes anywhere close to being “revolutionary” the way it was during the 70s, 80s, and other Page 15 DJed that event. It was a creative open minded mob scene to put it lightly and I Loved it previous decades. Do we lose our creative? Honestly, DJ’s and I have talked about this. What I’m leaning towards I guess, is that as I scan the contemporary pop music scene there’s doesn’t seem to be a single movement taking place. When I compare that with what was going on when I was growing up. Time will tell Let’s Rock and Roll All Night and Party Every Day If you missed the last show on thanksgiving weekend 2014 then you missed a hell of a time. While spending a year in Southern California, Kicking Sunrise has written and recorded a full ten song album of fun, feel good, jazzy pop songs that is to be released in Summer of 2015. Joe Murphy Vocals/Rythm Guitar: Joe Murphy is a pop-punk/rock influenced singer/songwriter from Williamstown, NJ. With his driven desire to succeed, he is always looking to take on a challenge and take his music career to the next level. Joe found a passion for music own his own and started singing and playing guitar in a variety of bands during high school at age 15 with his best friend Mark (KS drummer). With his energetic stage presence and ability to write and perform his own songs, Joe has taken on the role of the front man/lead singer in Kicking Sunrise. Matt Bosco Lead Guitar: Matthew Bosco is a guitarist from Sewell, NJ. Growing up he studied all musical genres which played a big part in the writing of Kicking Sunrise’s first album, “Heres to the Sunrise”. Throughout high school and college he played hundreds of shows, touring the U.S. and parts of Germany with various bands. Matthew’s passion for music found a permanent home in 2012 when he met Joe and Mark forming Kicking Sunrise. Matt’s dream has always been to do what he loves for a living, and with Kicking Sunrise that dream is becoming a reality. Mark Altamuro Drums/Percussion: Mark Altamuro is a rock/punk influenced drummer from Sewell, NJ. Starting music at a young age with Joe (KS vocalist), drumming has always been Mark’s biggest passion. Mark has played in many previous bands and played countless shows. There is nothing he would rather do than play the perfect show for the perfect crowd. With his high energy and hard hitting style of drumming, Mark always sets the tone leaving an outstanding impression on the crowd. Ryan Hornibrook Vocals/Bass: Ryan Hornibrook was born into music. His father was always either writing music or in a cover band working bars, clubs, or events such as weddings. After mirroring his father’s musical endeavors, he’s been working with Pro Tools and producing his own music for 12 years. Through producing instrumentals for purchase with band-mate Matt (Lead KS Guitarist) and working with other talented artists, he landed a spot in the Kicking Sunrise family. Music has always been his hobby, but now it’s his profession. I later learned that these photos were of the “Grzeskiewicz” family roots, such as “Eddie’s” cute little daughters, “Eddie’s” grandmother, “Joan” & “Eddie Sr.’s” wedding & even “Ziggy” (“Eddie’s” Since I live in NE silly Philly, I have grandfather). traveled many times down Linden Greeting me from the door was Avenue, towards the boat ramps, from the Frankford Avenue & I always my man “Mickey” (manager) & he informed me that “Dagwood’s Pub” has took notice to this corner tavern on been family owned & operated ever the left side of Linden & Torresdale since 1987, now with “Eddie” running Avenues. I am such a lucky bastard, cause on Walking into “Dagwood’s Pub” through the front door, I couldn’t help this foodie review visit to “Dagwood’s Pub” I had 2 very lovely servers waitto notice all of the framed annual group golf outing photographs. Then ing on my lucky azz. Their names were “Mary Kate” & “Krissi” (“Eddie’s” looking around, I was starting to get a warm, pleasant, family friendly feel- niece), I so wanna thank them both ing, that the owners were pouring out for a very memorable & sensational their life to their guests & welcoming service. Working my way around whoever walks in with open arms. To the room, I also gotta thank my gurl be honest, this felt really kool & I just “Shelly” & the master bartender knew this experience was gonna me a “Bobby”, my professors of libations for this evening. very positive memorable one. During the weather changing from The front of the house included a summer to fall on breezy nights your long wooden bar with high top table boy Roundhouse Ron just luvs a seating, then as I walked towards the rear, it turn into a relaxing dining fireplace facility with both high top & dining table seating, not to mention the interesting spiral steps leading to the 2nd floor. I just loved how they were playing chill music, but, I was still able to view the many flat screen televisions placed strategically around the dining area. As I was taking in the “Dagwood’s Pub” vibe, I noticed the variety of black & white framed family good hearty bowl of warm soup. So, first up for me was a few samplings of the “Dagwood’s Pub” homemade soup offerings. The “She Crab” soup just freakin blew me away with its creamy base & how it’s loaded with chunks of fresh crab. I also couldn’t pass up a chance to try the “Shrimp Bisque with Crème Fraiche” soup, as it was smooth to the rich taste of fresh shrimp & then topped off with a jumbo Bubba Gump. All I can say is, “WoW, what a fabulous way to start my meal off on this cool & windy evening, totally super yummmy”. What a great touch by serving the soups up with a special sea shell shaped soup spoon, I was so fascinated with this utensil, that I almost borrowed it for a few years. Taking my taste buds to all new heights was next on my mind as I was about to tackle a huge appetizer dish of “Clams Bonneville” & “Baked Oysters”. The “Clams Bonneville” were freakin awesome as they were perfectly seasoned & baked in a garlic herb butter sauce. And the “Baked Oysters” came out in an Oyster Rockefeller style as they were topped off with a crabmeat hollandaise sauce. Both of which had me wanting more, but, I knew I had a long journey of more food to come. If you are a lover of seafood, you gotta swing by “Dagwood’s Pub” for sum ocean fresh goodies as this place is very well known for their hearty King Neptune sized seafood menu. Hitting my table next was this spectacular large square shaped dish of extraordinarily smelling foodie choices of “Rib Eye Steak”, “Homemade Crab Cake”, “Jumbo Colossal Shrimp” & “Chicken Breast”. This big man kinda loves his beef, so, the “Rib Eye Steak” perfectly seasoned & cooked medium liking, was a taste of heaven on a bed of homemade mash potatoes with sliced mushrooms gravy. What can I say about the “Homemade Crab Cake”, but, awesome & I enjoyed how the cake held together as it was packed with fresh crab. Only “Momma G” could come up with a breathtaking & glorious Crab Cake like this. “Dagwood’s Pub” must have the local seafood connection on lock down, cause these “Jumbo Colossal Shrimp” were ridiculous in size with a Every Wednesday - OPEN MIC NIGHT! with Bits & Pieces Every Friday - DJ Dance Party with DJ Chas Paris Every Saturday - LIVE BANDS Cover and/or Original *Band Bookings call Dominic @ 678-386-3443 Special Show - September 26th - Track Tumpas crisp ocean fresh snap, just the way I like them. The “Chicken Breast” were cut down, seasoned, coated and fried up to a delectable refinement of protein. I utterly enjoyed this flavorful buffet of foodie goodness. It gave me a wide selection of taste & flavors that the “Dagwood’s Pub” offers to all of its customers every day of the week. “The Dagwood” sandwich is a must try, with a large fresh roll cut in half, loaded with turkey, ham, roast beef, American cheese, provolone cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo, salt, pepper & oregano. To finish off this madness, the “Dagwood’s Pub” also throws in sum potato chips & dill pickles. Even my good friend “Dagwood Bumstead” (an old skool comic book character) would be proud of this meaty culinary hero of a hoagie. Here are just a few spectacular weekly specials that you should defiantly take advantage of over @ “Dagwood’s Pub”, such as the “Clammy Hour” from Monday to Friday with 50cent Raw Clams, $1 Raw Oysters & $1 Colossal Shrimp. Or, every Saturday night take advantage of the phenomenal prime rib special for just $15.95 with all the trimmings. Coming up on September 14th (Monday night) will be an “E-A-G-LE-S Tailgate Party” from 5pm to 8pm, then the Monday Night Game with our Philadelphia Eagles playing the Atlanta Falcons, all for just $20 per person, which includes all the Food & Draft Beer (5pm to 8pm), plus LIVE music outside. “Pope Francis” is coming to “Dagwood’s Pub”, well he may just be here because the weekend of September 25th, 26th & 27th will be freakin krazy with a huge “Pope Party”. It starts off with ½ price Merlot wine (“Pope Francis’s” favorite) @ $2.50 all weekend long. Plus live local music, on Sept. 25th with “Catch 22”, on Sept. 26th with “Flannel” (90’s Night) & on Sept. 27th with “DJ Sister Beth” mixing it up from 2pm to 6pm. “Dagwood’s Pub” now has an awesome outside sidewalk dining area underneath their tropical Tiki umbrellas. Like they say here @ “Dagwood’s Pub”, “Come in, enjoy our family friendly atmosphere, and know that there are no strangers here, just friends you have not met yet”. The “Dagwood’s Pub” has a really nice sized 2nd floor catering banquet room with a fully stocked bar, awesome for private parties, receptions or work gatherings. All of their food is homemade with love, while the package prices are so very reasonably priced. Contact my boyz “Eddie” or “Mickey” @ 215.332.3620. DeMarco Murray by a landslide. Murray is the reigning NFL rushing champion and the main reason the Dallas Cowboys looked like a legitimate Super Bowl contender in 2014. Over the 14 years Andy Reid coached in Philadelphia, the Eagles played in 19 playoff games, won 10 of them, including five NFC title games and a Super Bowl appearance. In his first two seasons in Philly, new head coach Chip Kelly went 20-13 and made it to the playoffs his first season as an NFL coach. Since 1999, Reid’s first season as a head coach, the Cowboys have played in eight playoff games, wining just two Wildcard games, then went on to lose both times in the next round. Murray apparently did not have much faith in his friend and teammate Tony Romo, the injury-prone, aging signal caller who, when the spectacular happened in games he’s involved in, it usually happened to him and the Cowboys. In Murray’s eyes, precedent heavily was tipped in the Birds direction. Murray is 27 years old with only a few years of elite production in him. Why go through a rebuilding stage with a team that has an intrusive owner whose can’t seem to get out of its own way? Murray also must have felt a lack of respect from a franchise he helped put back on the map. Enter the Eagles and the innovative coach Chip Kelly...Murray saw respect, a big contract and a fresh start on the road to a ring and a legacy. Kelly’s offense is innovative and Murray now has backfield mates who compliment him in a way that the weight of the world is not on his shoulders. Don’t think Murray didn’t mean every word he said at his first press conference as an Eagle. “I felt that this was a great opportunity for me to win a Super Bowl, at the end of the day,” he said at the podium. “It wasn’t about financial security or anything like that. Obviously, you want something that you deserve and that’s respectful. I felt that those two things were important to me and I was able to accomplish that here.” Dallas fans and teammates were in shock and many still are that DeMarco Murray left the Cowboys for the Eagles. Photo by T.J. Engler/contrastphotography.com So obviously he thinks the Eagles are in better shape for a title run that the team he has spent his entire career with, the Cowboys... right? “I think the Eagles have a great chance to win the Super Bowl. And it’s not easy,” said Murray, who has a pair of Pro Bowls and a first-team All-Pro award under his belt. “I know there’s a lot of work that has to be done. It’s easy to sit up here and say that, but we have to go to work.” Judging by the tweets and emails sent and posted by his teammates, it was a shock and a heavy loss to virtually every player on the Cowboys roster. Immediately after the signing, Romo sent an email to the Dallas Morning News columnist Evan Grant that said... “It just happened. All the way up until today, I was still thinking we’d be able to keep DeMarco. Obviously it’s not an ideal situation. I’m losing a close friend too, so that hurts. We have to trust in the process and the people making the decisions. We have salary cap implications and a bunch of other things that we have to decide. That plays a role. Obviously the Eagles thought as highly of him as we did.” It remains to be seen how the Cowboys respond on the field as the season approaches. The search for DeMarco Murray’s replacement will go on without Darren McFadden, signed shortly after Murray inked his deal with the Eagles, because the day before Cowboys camp opened, he was placed on the active/ physically unable to perform list with a hamstring injury. And how has Murray blended in with the other running backs (Ryan Mathews and Darren Sproles) he will sharing the rick with? According to Kelly, it’s all peaches and cream. “I think it’s been great,” Kelly said during OTAs. “I think you can talk to those guys about it and [Running Backs Coach] Duce [Staley] in particular, it’s how that room functions. When you have DeMarco in there, and at the end of every meeting, DeMarco gets all the running backs together, and they share notes and go over their notebooks together. It’s really intense, to be honest with you, in terms of how they approach it.” Right now fans are crying in Dallas and in Philly they’re clicking their heels. Murray’s breakout season made the Cowboys special, made them different. His impact on the Eagles could be the difference in games like Kelly’s playoff loss to the New Orleans Saints his first year. If the Eagles hoist the Lombardi trophy this February, remember, in the end, it was a matter of respect. Its loud and aggressive and at times extremely angry. For a band that has been together since 1988 the one word that comes to mind when describing Deftones is consistent. Their live show proves why they have been around for so long. I have been, and will continue to focus on entertainment outside of the late night bar and band scene. Don’t get me wrong, that stuff is great, and I’ve logged my share of hours working, playing, and enjoying great entertainment, at many of the great local venues until two AM and beyond. It’s just that we live in an entertainment rich area, and I like getting the word out about some of the other great things to do. So far I’ve touched on summer concert series, car shows and all that good stuff, local breweries, and the rockabilly scene. This issue; Brews Cruise! The hundreds and hundreds of times I drive up and down I-95 by Penn’s Landing, and looked over at The Spirit of Philadelphia cruise ship docked between The Chart House Restaurant and the Seaport Museum, and I never checked it out until now. It took Mrs. Beaumont, (AKA Lisa Marie, photographer extraordinaire), and her love for anything WMMR’s Jacky Bam Bam has going on, combined with Philadelphia’s Yards Brewing Company, and an event they described this way; “Come aboard the Spirit of Philadelphia and enjoy your local Philly flavor favorites & an open Beer Bar with Yards Brewing Company products all night long! Yards’ expert staff will be on-board for samplings and to answer your beer-related questions. Plus, WMMR’s Jacky Bam Bam will be our special guest host and keep the boat rocking with all of your favorite hits”. Ok, I’m in! Now, as a matter of full disclosure, I have to admit I have not yet heard Jacky Bam Bam’s show, but Lisa is quite the fan. More on all that later. The ship is just cool. Just being at Penn’s Landing is cool too. There is parking right there, and the staff is friendly and first rate. We’re off to a good start! They seat us by a window, and hand us drink menus. We enjoy the view, have a beer and pretty much just start checking out the scene. Still not sure what all to expect, we do some people watching and take it all in. Might have forgot to mention there was a “pink” theme to the night. Many people onboard were dressed in pink, Page 29 Jacky BamBam and Jacky arrived in over the top pink to say the least! (as I write this, I’m not sure how many pictures will make the paper, but if ever a picture says a thousand words, this is one of those times!) Next, the chef comes around and informs us “the buffet is now open”. This buffet was no joke. Ribs, chicken, salads, veggies, deserts, it was all you could eat, and went on for hours, maybe the whole cruise, not sure. After we stuffed our faces, Lisa and I went slightly different directions. I headed for the outside deck, and Lisa headed for the DJ booth and the dance floor. They say opposites attract. It was still light out, so I got some great views of the city skyline, the Battleship New Jersey, and the the bridges. As we headed south, there were some cool old boats including a really neat old aircraft carrier tied up in a slip on the river. I looked at the section of the Navy base where boats exit into the Delaware River. It reminded me of one of the opening scenes in the movie “The Philadelphia Experience”. I asked the couple standing next to me if they remembered that scene. They told me they weren’t from here. Turns out they were from Las Vegas, visiting Philadelphia. Again, I found it ironic that I’ve driven past this ship for decades and never checked it out, and these people visiting from across the country were on it their first time in town. So that was outside. Forgot to mention, at dusk, the stadiums were lit up and looked real cool from the water. There was an old REO Speedwagon album or video, or something where the singer Kevin says “the show is over folks, the party is starting right now”. It was kinda like that when I headed back inside. The dance floor was packed, and the place was rockin! They were doing stuff like “The Cupid Shuffle”, songs from the movie “Grease”, and all kinds of dances that most people seemed to know. I even saw instances where the staff participated. It was a party. And the life of the party, right in the centre of everything, pink as pink could be, master of ceremonies; Jacky Bam Bam. Here’s what I’ll say about him; (other then I want him at my next party), he’s genuine. Over the years I have met more than my share of media and music personalities. They’re all people, and all different. Many are at least a little bit different “in character”, then they are in other situations. Not the case with Jacky Bam Bam. I believe he was genuinely having a great time, and really enjoys events with his listeners. He made it fun, and kept the music rocking, and the people dancing and having a blast until the boat was docked! I’m gonna make a point to stay up past my bedtime one of these nights and check out his radio show! There are a couple more of these cruises coming up. One September 17th, and another October 15th. I strongly recommend you check them out. Side note, not only will I be checking out Jacky’s radio show on MMR, there is a case of Yards Brewing Company Philadelphia IPA in my fridge, so I guess the promotions were all win/ win! What’s in a night to remember, it’s really what you’re going out for. You are riding in the convertible, warm summer winds are blowing all about. Sights and sounds of the night Rush by as you carry on a simple conversation about seemingly mundane things but somehow you don’t mind. You’re out, and that’s really all that matters, so where to go? How do you find out what’s up? That really doesn’t matter as much as when you get somewhere, you find an environment that’s got energy. Energy is what comes out of each person through the instruments and the music. When you sit an walk around the stage, prior to the gig, with the gear all set, ready to go, just waiting for “show time” you catch a shiver as you take small note of the details; the little parts of the gear, the wires, the way they lay out of whack yet somehow poetically arranged in as a mountain trail through a pass where the feelings pass from the mind to the strings to the instruments thru the wires to the amps through the system to the speakers and into the minds and hearts of the audience. This is what goes on and this mix of spirit and technology come together to create an experience that is “the band”. As we planned our trip back to the stage at the Legendary Dobbs for the 40th anniversary show, all of these thoughts came together and a journey started from the thought of bringing the Paul Kurrey Band back to the stage for what always may be the last time ever. A band that began in a small place that might be called an “incubator” for bands became the origin of a group of individuals who shared a love of music and could imagine a vision of creating something musically and visually special. The entire group of band members had been with previous outfits, from original bands to cover bands to solo acts, duos, trios, and over the years a common appreciation for the music and performance itself came into being. The regions of all the artists are fairly diverse, throughout the Delaware Valley but without the introduction of the band leader, Paul, to Dr Lou at Dr Lou’s Place full time open stage, there wasn’t a chance for it even to come into being. With the introduction of Kevin to Paul, and Paul’s subsequent invitations of Joe from his Philadelphia musical work, the formation of the PKB was a fateful accident for sure. As a band the acoustic music that Paul writes and plays so often and has played for many Philadelphia solo venues kind of comes alive with the creative additions of Bass, Slide Guitar, and Dejembe drum. The persona of Paul’s “Bob Dylan meets Springsteen” type of ad hoc rhythm or maybe arhythm (to coin a phrase) gets grounded in a melodic bass line that brings his musical direction more towards something that can support a lead melody type of addition with the slide and it all gets grounded in a drum that transforms the music right before your eyes. This band went out in the 2010-2011 time frame and played places like Dobbs, The Tritone, World Café Live, and places in NYC as well. After an initial attempt to record that didn’t pan out, probably due to the confined nature of the studio and the inherent free range type of style that the band had perfected for live shows but somehow couldn’t translate into a viable recordable product, the band members all went their own ways. Kev went off to form another band out of Dr Lou’s which played out and though Kev moved on the band is still playing and growing in the area. Joe went back to his new studio and currently works on projects with many artists offering creative talents on guitar and expert studio work. Dr Lou, already in another band, went off to pursue growing that and was consumed with prob- lems with Dr Lou’s Place operations after the state closed access to the only major highway available for almost 2 years. During this time Paul fought the worldly demon of a terrible illness that left him thinner and weaker physically than maybe he ever was, but his musical spirit did not dim even in the slightest as he fought back and continued to perform even after going through radiation and chemotherapy. Time went on and thought there was a brief reunion before, the current opportunity to bring PKB back together a 3rd time to bring out a potential show to a very key time in Philadelphia Music history. Well the plans went in, the boys talked it over and everyone got on board to head for JC Dobbs again on August 23, 2015, for the 40th anniversary of the Philadelphia Music Scene. In fact the lineup for the day read almost like the Paul Kurrey Benefit show that Dr Lou and Bill O Brien put on with the help of Paul’s ex manger J. The original plan was to pick 3-4 songs that could be called PKBs best and hottest songs and drive them to the wall. The boys put together a the potential of the moment find them on a FB message group and began to collabopersonal level. We as the PKB did just that rate. We set up a time to go to Dr Lou’s and you will find video of this performance studio, rehearse the songs, and take them and a small documentary about this experito Dr Lou’s Place where it all began and run ence on YouTube sometime soon. Know through them on the stage there. Followthat the joy that happens on the stage is ing that, the stages was set for the return real, and the joy you can have by putting to JC Dobbs and opening the show with your “band back together” is an amazing the legendary Michael Tearson kicking off gift from life and one that should be sought the introductions. Well even though it may out, experienced, and appreciated as one have been a surprise to the crowd there of life’s many pleasures.
