President’s Message:
by Simon Cooper
T
his column is about opportunity and passion.
It’s also about taking risks to build something, when all about you there are obstacles
and inertia.
If you were a passionate blues fan and say, BB King was performing in
your town wouldn’t you go? If you lived for football and lived in sight
of the home stadium, wouldn’t you go? If the ocean calls to your heart
and the beach is just over there, wouldn’t you go?
If you haven’t noticed at this point, aside from my lovely, patient wife
and my kids, my passion is driving and in particular I love driving on a
race track especially at our Boston Chapter High Performance Driving
Schools. During driving season, I travel to New Hampshire, Connecticut, New York and even to Canada. New Hampshire Motor Speedway
(NHMS) is the closest track, which is about 90 minutes from my house.
It must be said though, that like listening to live music, the venue makes
the experience. While NHMS is a fun local theater, a track like Watkins
Glen is like Opera at the Met in NYC. For us in the Boston area, the Glen
is 5-6 hours away, but for our friends in the Genesee Chapter it is only
70 miles away, and so I am logistically envious of those guys.
There have been decades of decline in motor sports venues with fewer
tracks remaining afloat, and so the idea of a new race track in New England would be like discovering a unicorn. Well, I am happy to report that
members of your driving events committee just came back from seeing a
real live unicorn, right here in central Massachusetts. After many years
Palmer Motorsports Park is scheduled to open in the spring of 2015.
BMW CCA racer and HPDS instructor Fred Ferguson led the way to get
the Palmer project re-started and, as we saw in our visit to the track, this
will be something special – our own opera house!
The track is built on top of Whiskey Hill (note Hill) and is 2.2 miles
long with fifteen turns and amazing elevation changes. The views from
the track are spectacular. It reminds me of the fun parts of the Kancamagus Highway, the cork screw at Laguna Seca, or a few of the trickier
stages of the Nurburg ring transplanted into our back yard, only 60 miles
from my house.
Fred graciously led us on several laps in both directions around the
fully paved track during our visit, and we were very impressed with
the layout despite the all-day rainstorm. There is still a lot of work to be
done with the infield and paddock areas, but they are well on their way.
Never one to look a gift unicorn in the mouth, your driving events
committee has seized the opportunity and reserved three weekends for
the 2015 season as we believe that this new track will become a destination for clubs and organizations from all over the northeast. The best part
is, that it is right here close to home.
If driving is your passion, a skill you want to develop, the Boston
Chapter High Performance Driving School 2015 season is firming up.
There is passion here, professionalism and a safe and definitely fun environment to learn more about yourself and your car, so tell a friend
and pass it on. ♦

Meet the Candidates
President: Simon Cooper
Vice president, director activities: John Sullivan
Simon has been a member of the
BMW CCA since 1999, but has been
a fan of BMWs since 1981 when his
Dad bought an E12 520i while serving
in the Royal Air Force in Germany.
Simon has been active in the club’s
driving events and has progressed
from student to instructor in both
High Performance Driving as well as our Advanced
Driving Safety Skills programs. For the past 4 years he
has served as the co-chair of the Driving Committee. He
has also served as an appointed and elected member of
the Boston Chapter Board for six years, most recently
as president since 2012. Simon believes that the Chapter
exists for the benefit and enjoyment of all our members,
a group with diverse backgrounds and interests. He
supports the continuation and growth of the driver
education programs and social events, but would like
to increase the diversity of programs and the number of
participants. With your support, he is looking forward
to serving again as president next year, and he would
be honored to give back to the club that has given him
great fun and many new friends.
John has been active in the Boston
Chapter since 1989 and is the current vice president and director
of activities. He served as Chapter
president from 1991-1995, vice president from 1989-1990, and again from
1996 to 2013. He is also serving his
8th year as the North Atlantic region
vice president of BMW CCA. As director of activities
in 2014, John has coordinated most of the social and
technical events, including: fun rally’s, undercarriage
tech sessions, paintless dent removal tech sessions, RI
show & shine event, many programs hosted by BMW
dealers and independent shops, and the Boston Chapter Concours. He also organizes the Chapter general
meetings, for which he consistently recruits nationally
recognized Speakers. John always brings enthusiasm
to the work he does for the Chapter, and is looking
forward to another year as vice president & director of
activities with your support.
Treasurer: Jack Woods
Jack has been a Board Member
and Treasurer since 2008 and has
been a CCA member since 2003.
Jack enjoys the camaraderie and
friendships that he has made at
track and social events and has recruited family and friends to join
in the fun. He says he is most impressed with how knowledgeable
members are and how willing they are to share their
expertise, on and off the track. As the owner of Central Business Solutions, a Bookkeeping, Accounting,
Tax and Payroll practice in Peabody, MA, Jack is
well qualified to serve as treasurer and sees it as his
chance give back to the Chapter. With your support,
he looks forward to working with the board to help
improve the financial management and the general
operations, activities and social aspects of the club.

Secretary: Baer Connard
Baer is the current Chapter Secretary and has been an active
member in the Boston Chapter
since 1999 and BMW CCA since
1993. His current cars include an
e46 330i, e46 325xit and a Spec
Race Ariel Atom. Since joining
t h e C h a p t e r , h e h a s b e e n i nvolved in event management and
increasing membership involvement. He co-chaired
the autocross registrar position in 2004 and soloed
as chair from 2005 to 2007. Baer brings a wide range
of experience to the board having participated in
driving events like Oktoberfest and special programs in the U.S. and abroad. Baer is dedicated to
the BMW brand and its performance culture. He is
the owner of ACE Performance, a Tewksbury based
BMW performance and service facility. With your
support he hopes to continue his work and development of the Boston Chapter as the Secretary on
the board of directors.
Meet the Candidates
Membership chair: Rachel Baker
Director: Dan Chadwick
Rachel has been a member of the
BMW CCA since 2008 when she
bought her 135i which is now
pushing 135k miles. As Autocross
registrar for the past 3+ years, Rachel has been an invaluable member
of the Autocross team. In her role
as registrar she is often the first
contact with members participating in Autocross. She
answers their pre-event questions and is the first person to greet them at the event gate, offering a warm
welcome, advice and information about other Chapter
events. She is actively involved in many Chapter activities and excited about the opportunity to support
both driving and non-driving events to increase participation by new and current members. As membership
chair she will continue to help others find, share and
develop their interests within the club. The Autocross
Team says Rachel is a dynamic force who brings people
together and will leverage her energy to retain and increase club membership. With your support she will
bring new ideas and enthusiasm to the Chapter as a
collaborative partner with event organizers, as she tries
to meet an even larger part of the member base.
Dan has been a Chapter Director
since 2008 and a BMW CCA member since 1999 when he brought
his new M Coupe. At the time, he
didn’t know much about the club,
until a knuckleheaded low-speed
spin made him consider improving
his driving skills. He began enthusiastically attending autocross events, safety schools, and
track events and became hooked on high performance
driving. He’s an advocate for the Chapter’s activities
and for the friendships it fosters. Dan now instructs at
driving schools and helps train new instructors. In 2012,
the club tapped Dan’s technical skills to develop Driving Evals, the on-line evaluation, driving logbook, and
student/instructor management system. Since it was
launched, Driving Evals has dramatically increased the
feedback that driving school participants receive, and
has helped the registrars optimize their run group and
student/instructor pairings. All Boston Chapter Driving School participants receive a free drivingevals.com
account.
Director: Larry Barbieri
Larry has been a member of the
BMW CCA and the Boston Chapter
since November of 2002. He was the
Chapter Membership Chair from
2007-2010 and has been the advertising director since 2011. He started
his involvement by attending quarterly meetings and social events, but
got hooked while attending high performance driving
schools. Today he is a member of the registrar committee, a high performance driving instructor, an advanced
driving skills instructor and a Street Survival instructor.
Larry says the latter is especially rewarding. “Working
with new drivers and watching them gain confidence
in their skills is just fantastic!” Larry has spent a lot
of time marketing the Boston Chapter to other BMW
owners and has personally signed up many new members. If elected, Larry will continue to help increase the
number of advertisers in the Boston Bimmer as well as
manage advertising and sponsorships for the Chapter.
Director: Michael Mangini
Michael became one of the original
BMW CCA members when he purchased his first BMW, in 1974. Early
in his membership, he served as a corallymaster and ran several rallies for
the Chapter. For the past four years
he has served as the Co-chair of the
Boston Chapter Concurs d’Elegance
and has been instrumental in the event’s growth in popularity by actively promoting the event online on BMW
enthusiasts forums. While serving as co-chair, he was also
responsible for a significant increase in sponsorships for
this event. As a member of the activities committee, he
has worked to coordinate and promote the Chapter’s other
events, and currently serves as the activities editor of the
Chapter’s Facebook page. Michael has owned many great
BMWs over the years including his Verona Red 1974 2002tii
purchased new, but his current favorite is his 2011 M3
which he learned to more fully appreciate and drive after
attending the BMW M Performance Driving School. With
your support, Michael will continue his work for the Chapter with emphasis on expanding social and tech events. ♦

he Boston Chapter of the BMW CCA puts
on many great driving events from Advanced Driver Safety Schools, to High
Performance Driving Schools, and Club Racing Schools. But where do they find all the Paul Simpson (inset) drives his

they are given the privilege to instruct their
fellow members. If you’ve ever wondered how the person in your right
hand seat got there, here’s a look at how two people became instructors.
The path to becoming an instructor
Paul Simpson has been a BMW CCA member for 7 years, his primary Chapter being the Pine Tree Chapter in Maine. However, because his home
Chapter doesn’t sponsor track days, Paul sought out the Boston Chapter
where he can drive his 2003 Honda S2000. Although he has been with the
chapter a while, he only became an instructor this year.
Paul had tracked his car for quite some time, and had 70+ track days
under his belt including: time at NHMS, Lime Rock, Watkins Glen, Thompson, Mt. Tremblant, and Laguna Seca. He had also volunteered his time at
the Chapter’s ADSS and Street Survival Schools. You would think that having this much track time would make him instantly an instructor, but no!
The Boston Chapter takes being an instructor very seriously, to insure that
all the members who participate in track events have the best and safest
experience possible.
The first step to becoming an instructor was expressing interest to the
organizers. Paul was given the opportunity of a trial ride-along, and was
assessed as not quite ready. At the end of the season, he was given read-
ing material and an opportunity to
work with one of the core-Boston
instructors to help refine his skills
at becoming an effective instructor.
Another one of the positive aspects
of working to become an instructor
with the Boston Chapter is the ability
to ask its talented group of instructors for advice.
Working with a mentor
A year after his first expressing interest Paul was given a mentor to
work with, who would help him
prepare for the intensive training
and assessment required of instructors. They spent time together in
the car working on feedback and

observation, but like all instructor
fellow enthusiasts by teaching a wide range of people
candidates, Paul also spent time in the classroom (see,
to become better and safer drivers. He acknowledges
not only students have to do classroom time!) learning
the satisfaction that comes from being able to provide
the curriculum prepared by the BMW CCA. After distudents with a rewarding experience while also being
gesting and proving his mastery of the curriculum, Paul

you thought you were.”
Old school instructors still in training
Jonathan Katz has a very different story of how he became an instructor. He joined the Boston Chapter in
1976, seven years after it formed, when the then editor
of the Bimmer, Yale Rachlin pulled up next to him at a
stop sign and handed him an application through the
window of his 2002tii.
Jonathan has been an instructor with the club for 36
years, and will tell you that, “back in those days anyone
who was ‘fast’ was promoted to Instructor. That says
more about how little we knew about driver education
back then than it does about my instructing skills!” Since
then he has participated in many Instructor Training
Programs with both the BMW Club and Porsche Club.
Apart from attending driver training classes, Jonathan attended between 15-20 track events a season
including VIR, Mt Tremblant, and Watkins Glen. He

Something to consider
So, if you are considering a track day realize that the
instructors who are there to help you were all beginners
like you and have put in many hours of their own time
to share their knowledge, experience, and passion with
you. And, if you have the desire to become an instructor, the club is there to help you with that, too. ♦

Third Quarter General Meeting
Turner Motorsport in Amesbury, MA
Story by Simon Cooper and John Sullivan, Photos by Neil Halin
I
f you haven’t been to the the Turner
Motorsport facility in Amesbury, it
is a huge building comprising the
three elements of Will Turner’s automotive business. There is the parts
store and warehouse, the vehicle servicing and maintenance facility and
of course the race shop.
The Turner team welcomed us into the Service Facility where several members cars were being worked
on, and where a generous sandwich spread was served
with all the fixings. While we ate Will and the Turner
team mingled with the attendees and discussed everything from racing to car mods and beyond.
Getting the full tour
After everyone had their fill of supper, Jay Baier and
Will took us out to the race shop where the Tudor
championship winning Z4 was up on jack stands next
to it’s sister parts car. Of course back on August 27 th
the championship was still very much undecided and
the Z4 wasn’t a champion yet. Will gave the group an
overview of the new Tudor series for 2014 and what
that meant to Turner Motorsport and how it almost
didn’t happen with BMW. Late in 2013 Will had con12 | Boston Bimmer • December/Election 2014

sidered stepping away from BMW due to
the rule changes and the stiff competition
in that class, but fortunately for us and
BMW he decided to campaign the Z4 chassis which as you will see in the pictures is
much wider than your Z4 street car.
A look inside a race team
Coming off a win the previous weekend at
VIR, he was also able to give us details on
the races up to that point and some of the
frustrating rule changes and penalties that
the new race series stipulated with Turner
and other teams affected. It was great to
see Will’s enthusiasm for the sport and his
easily apparent respect for his team and
his drivers. The logistics he described for
getting the cars, the trucks, the tools, tires
and the team out to each of the tracks all
around the country is staggering. It really
does take a focused team to win races and
Turner Motorsport is well respected in the
sport for winning races and championships as an independent team.
A winning season
Our visit was capped off with a tour of
the warehouse filled with BMW go faster and maintenance parts that were very
tempting. After such an entertaining visit
we all left at the end of the night rooting
for the Turner Team to do well in the last
two races of the year. While they came in
3rd in COTA and 4th at Road Atlanta they
were able to build points and secure the
Tudor United Sports Car championship in
the GTD class. This is a great achievement
for our home town team and we wish them
well for 2015 with the possibility of a two
car bid for glory. ♦

ell the 2014 driving season is over now and your driving events
committee can relax and take a break. Ha! Not a chance. We
are already working on 2015,and it is going to be epic with yet
another new track to discover not far from home in Palmer Massachusetts. Think Kancamangus highway with no speed limits and hopefully
no mooses, er, moosen, ..a gaggle of meese? Well, you get the idea ...
Before we get to plans for next year though, we really need to look
back at 2014. We held six schools with thirteen on track days all across
the North East and in Canada. We tried a new track and visited old
favorites and ran an Instructor Training School, all with an excellent
safety record.
The best kind of road trips
It did feel like we were on the road all the time and we did average
one event each month of the season. However, these were the best
kind of road trips, the kind where “fun & learning” were the destination, the goal and the reward for the time spent getting there. We are
also lucky, here in the Northeast to have access to some of the most
professional and challenging tracks for each of our High Performance
Driving Schools.
Special thanks to Joe Marko and the entire team
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the volunteer staff who
gave up their free time before, during and after the events to make
sure that our students and instructors enjoyed their track experience
to the fullest. I had intended to take a group photo of the dozen or so
guys running our events this year, but over the three days of our last
event we never had the opportunity to get us all together at one time.
The team members were always busy instructing
students in the classroom
or on the track, or wrenching on cars to get students
back on the track. We will
have to try again next year.
This was also Joe Marko’s
last year as co-chair of the
Driving Committee. He recently moved to Charlotte,
NC and we extend our very
special thanks for all that
he has done for the Boston
Chapter and for safety at
the track.
Thanks to a great
group of students
I would also like to thank
all the student drivers who
came out to participate in
our Boston Chapter events.
Our events are designed to
give people the opportunity
to experience driving on a
track where they learn new
tools for dealing with challenging driving situations
on the road. This is also the
crucible to take your driving up a notch with our Skill
Level Program, where driver development for your
specific goals as a novice,
racer or something in between is our mission.
This year we were especially excited to welcome

The 2014 Autocross year end banquet:
Celebrating another exciting season
Story and photos by Audra Tella
T
he 2014 season started off with
a beautiful 70-degree day, 48
eager students, 24 talented instructors and 4 hardy volunteers.
It was a great day for an autocross
school! Justin Chen created a formal
“Chalk Talk” presentation that he and
resident course designer, Scruffy,
used to help orient everyone to autocross, basic driving theory and
autocross guidelines.
Three elements in the morning gave everyone
plenty of practice to get ready for the full-timed
course in the afternoon. Students and Instructors alike enjoyed the thrill of 5 timed runs.
Special thanks to Scruffy, Rob and Justin for
setting up the courses and to Read Fleming,
Susie Kelley, Rachel Baker and Scott Baston for
all of their hard work before and during the
event. We literally could not have done it without you!

Amazing team work
That first autocross event set the
tone for season. The teamwork
across all members of this club
is amazing. Car breaks down on
course with 20 feet of oil: half
the drivers suddenly appear with
brooms, speedy dri and feet! As
it turns out, grinding in cat litter/speedy dri with your feet is
very effective! There are so many
extraordinary people who take personal responsibility to make the
events run well, there are far too
many to list.
Some stellar contributors
Some notable contributions include
a member who brought a Lawn
Mower! Read Fleming, officially
Volunteer of the Year, mowed a
large section of site allowing easier
(cleaner) access to the Port-A-Potties. Hauling a lawn mower from
Providence to Devens in the back
of a MINI deserves total respect.
Also, Hank Wallace brought us
double-gridding! This is a serious
improvement in our grid. Formerly drivers at the end of line felt like
they were gridded somewhere in
East Cupcake, far removed from
the action. Now, everyone has a
better opportunity to connect with
other drivers and experience the
amazing camaraderie of this club.
Thank you to Read, Hank and
many others whose ideas have
improved the Autocross events!

to Cold Stone Creamery and Starbucks. Okay, so it was
really about the bragging rights. Our friends from
SCCA, NER Porsche and NCA Porsche put up a mighty
fight. We hope that the winning team, from SCCA, will
be back in 2015 for another shot at the top spot.
Special thanks to Christo Tinkov
Sadly this year we bid a fond farewell to Autocross CoChair Christo Tinkov. Christo stayed on as a mentor
and guide to ensure ongoing success of the Autocross
Events. He implemented lunch break and lunch delivery. This gives everyone some needed down time
and an opportunity to connect with other drivers;
something we all appreciate. Christo has been a huge
proponent of the Autocross program writing many articles features in Bimmer that brought awareness to
the sport that we love. Many thanks to Christo for all
of his hard work over the 6 years he dedicated to the
Autocross events.
With Christo’s departure, we welcomed two new CoChairs. Scott Baston and Bill Brundige have embraced
the task with enthusiasm and amazing dedication.
Their collective efforts have resulted in organized but
more relaxed events. Plans for 2015 are already underway. Scott and Bill will be a big part of improvements
in the works to build on the fantastic program built by
preceding Autocross Events Coordinators. ♦

Our
own
“Car
Talk”
When he’s a “car guy” and I’m not

of cars. He loves to drive. When
he’s not working as a physician, he’s a high performance
driving instructor for the BMW
Club of America, so he loves to
take his BMW M3 (fully safetymodified, with a HANS device
because his wife would like him
to stick around for a good long
while) on the track and drive.
Fast. Very fast. He is also the
part owner of a race car that has
driven in both the LeMons and
CHUMPS race series. Our basement and garage are filled with
just about every tool that can be
used on a car, and while I am handy with tools, I
barely recognize half of them.
rue confessions: my husband is a car guy, and I’m
not. I look at cars as a necessary evil. In fact, I didn’t
even own one until a year into our marriage, when
we were moving from inner city Philadelphia (where I
had walked everywhere), to suburban Chicago where
there was virtually no public transportation. Before
that, I lived in Manhattan where owning a car inflicts
a specific kind of masochism on its owner. Much to
Neil’s chagrin, my definition of a car is a machine with
four wheels and an engine that gets me from point A
to point B.
With eyes wide open
I did, however, “walk” into our relationship with
my eyes wide open. When we were dating, Neil’s
car was a much beloved old Mustang that he inherited from his grandfather. (You know I’m not a car
person, because I don’t know the make or model and
I’m fuzzy on the exact color … was it yellow? Orange
maybe?) But what I learned over time was that Neil
doesn’t just enjoy cars, he’s a passionate car guy. He
loves the aesthetics of cars. He loves the mechanics
A divergent perspective
On the flip side, I’m currently driving a 13 year old
rusty Saab with 94,000 miles on it. When it works, I
don’t think about it. When it doesn’t, it goes to our
mechanic and I tell him to call Neil. It’s not that I am
incapable of understanding what’s wrong with the car,
it’s that I have other things in my life to focus on that

Esfahani Smith that reviews the research regarding what makes a solid
long term relationship, (http://
www.theatlantic.com/health/
archive/2014/06/happily-ever-after/372573/) I was looking forward
to finding out what the experts say.
It is a long, fascinating discussion, which is well worth the read,
but the heart of their findings is research by psychologists John and
Julie Gottman about daily interactions. They discovered that in day to
day communications, partners make
“bids for attention” in talking about
something that interests them, hoping to connect with one another. It
is how these bids are responded to
that makes or breaks relationships.
The Atlantic article says:
Photos on this and the previous page
were taken by Lisa’s husband Neil Halin
when they went to pick up their truck
that was being serviced locally.
Although Neil has a soft spot for BMWs
he has an appreciation for all makes,
models and eras of cars.

are more important to me. When the
mechanic starts talking, I hear “blah,
blah, blah, blah.” (If you remember
the adults in the Peanut’s cartoons?
Yeah – it’s like that.)
In addition to the differences in
how we view cars, he is a “country
mouse” while I am a “city mouse.”
His idea of a perfect day is to rope
me into weeding in the garden
when he isn’t asking me to be his
extra set of hands to help change
the brake fluid in his BMW. My
22 | Boston Bimmer • December/Election 2014
idea of a perfect day, on the other
hand, is to get up early to work on
the current novel in progress, then
curl up with a good book, or stop
by the coffee shop to people-watch,
or wander through a museum. One
might look at the two of us from the
outside and wonder about our basic
compatibility.
So why does it work?
Despite our differences, we’ve managed to stay happily married for 26
years. But I’ve wondered from time
to time why our relationship seems
to work, so when I stumbled upon
an article in The Atlantic by Emily
“By observing these types of interactions, Gottman can predict
with up to 94 percent certainty
whether couples—straight or
gay, rich or poor, childless or
not—will be broken up, together
and unhappy, or together and
happy several years later. Much
of it comes down to the spirit
couples bring to the relationship.
Do they bring kindness and generosity; or contempt, criticism,
and hostility?”
Kindness and generosity are things
that can be practiced, things that can
be changed. This explains how two
people with such different interests
as Neil and I can nonetheless have a
solid relationship.
Generosity can lead to
enlightenment
We try to listen and support each
other — even when we don’t completely understand the other’s
perspective — which can occasionally lead to enlightenment for both
of us. For example, we have listened
to “Car Talk” together, for almost
every Saturday since we’ve been
married. (Car Talk was broadcast
nationally starting in 1987. Neil and
I were married in 1988.) And I always enjoyed (secretly, of course; I could never admit it to Neil) the show,
not simply for the silly antics of Tom and Ray, but for
the education I got in all things car. I loved the fact that
week after week, Neil would typically come up with the
solution right along with the “Car Talk” guys. I might
not care a lot about cars, but I have always appreciated
Neil’s skill in problem solving and his relentless competence. When we got to meet the Magliozzi brothers at
an NPR event several years ago, Neil was thrilled; and
our entire family felt like we had lost a friend when Tom
passed away this Fall.
A few weeks ago, Neil’s truck was in the shop. Lured
by the promise of brunch, I kept him company while he
drove up to Andover to return the rental and pick up
his truck. Below the regular showroom, the dealership
had this collection of classic American cars, in pristine
condition. I could tell my husband was nearly salivating
to spend some time looking at them, so I encouraged him
to go in. In the language of the Gottmans, Neil made a
bid for attention and I “turned toward” him.
Seeing cars through his vision
It was clear as he went around from car to car that he was
in a sacred space. And while cars, per se, don’t hold much
appeal for me, I enjoyed looking at these through his vision and his love. Alone, I might have simply glanced
through the window and noticed some vintage automobiles, but that’s as far as it would have gone, which
would have been a shame. Truly, these were works of
art. I’ve been with Neil long enough to appreciate his
aesthetic and see the beauty in a well crafted machine.
I think this is why we’ve been married for 26 years:
we’ve been willing and able to enjoy what our partner
enjoys, without resentment, and without irony. As a former New Yorker who now is a part owner in 3 daily
drivers and 2 track cars, some days it still seems a little
excessive, but that’s life with a “Car Guy.” And, you
know what; I wouldn’t change him. But sorry Neil, I still
don’t want to hang out at the track with you. Pick me up
at the coffee shop on the way home. ♦

On Track: 2014 BMW Racing Champions
Story by John Oglesby
2014
turned out to be very good
for BMW Motorsports, both in
factory sponsored efforts and in racing
by independents racing under the BMW
banner. BMW managed to win at least
four championships in the US and Europe this year and is looking to continue
to improve in 2015 with at least one new
series being contested.
In the United States
In the U.S. our own Turner Motorsports captured the
inaugural Tudor Sports Car Team and Driver’s Championship for the GT-Daytona class with their #94 Z4 GTD,
a modified GT-3 version of the roadster. It came down
to the last race, but Dane Cameron and his team-mates
were able to beat the Ferrari and Porsche competition to
capture the Team title while Dane managed to capture
the Driver’s crown. It was another great year for TMS.
This performance led to Dane coming in second in
points for the BMW Sport Trophy for BMW independent drivers at the large BMW annual awards ceremony
in Munich. He just missed out on the top award that
went to his teammate Markus Palttala from Finland
who also competed for BMW in many European endurance races in BMW Z4 GT3s. These awards continue a
long TMS tradition.
Paul Dalla Lama won the top spot for TMS in 2011
and Will Turner himself finished third in 2006. Finishing
third this year was Tom Capizzi who captured the SCCA
24 | Boston Bimmer • December/Election 2014
North American Road Racing Championship (NARRC)
driving his ITS E36 and had several Pro IT wins.
On the European front
On the European front, BMW won the DTM Driver’s
championship this year, but was unable to land the
Manufacturer or Team titles. Marco Whittmann who
won the championship was the BMW DTM driver of
the year while his Team RMG won the top BMW team
honors and Maxime Martin won the BMW DTM rookie
of the year award. It will be a challenge for BMW to
come out on top next year to make it three in a row, but
so far BMW has shown that they know how to compete
in the new DTM.
Also in Europe, BMW independent West Surrey Racing and their driver Colin Turkington with his 125i
M-Sport won the BTCC Driver’s Championship, The
BTCC Team Championship, The Independent Driver’s
championship and the Independent Team Championship which has never happened. They managed to beat

Changes in the works for 2015
For 2015 there are some changes in the works for our heroes. TMS is going to campaign GT-3 Spec Z4 race cars
in the Pirelli Word Challenge where they can use a true
GT-3 specification car rather than having to downgrade
the car for the Tudor series. Will hasn’t announced the
other series that they might compete in for next year,
but I expect that there will be more in hand than just the
Pirelli engagement. In the BTCC, WSR will be back with
the 125i M-Sport, but their sponsor of 5 years ebay motors
will not continue as their contract has run its course.
That means Colin won’t be back, but rumors are that
triple WTCC champ and BMW factory driver Andy Priaulx might replace him. That would be a huge step for
BMW in the BTCC. Until next year – stay on track! ♦

a new home for my project car. I
purchased this car from a dealer
in Texas 4 years ago to restore and
enjoy, but I have not had time, and I
must let it go to make room. I have
done some work on it, the body is in
good shape, and it runs and drives
well. It has auto trans, pw, ps, pb,

on the Odometer. It comes with
the factory hardtop and a new convertible top in a box. Also included
