Pratt Institute 125 Annual Commencement th Friday, May 16, 2014, 1 PM Radio City Music Hall • New York City Notes on Academic Heraldry The caps, gowns, and hoods of the academic procession date back to the Middle Ages when they were common dress for scholars. Monks and students wore them to keep warm in the damp and drafty twelfth-century castles and halls of learning. The bachelor’s gown has a pleated front and long, pointed sleeves. The master’s gown, which may be worn open, is distinguishable by its long, square sleeves closed at the end and slit near the elbow to permit the forearms to come through. The doctor’s gown, which also may be worn open, is trimmed with velvet panels down the front and has three velvet bars on its bell-shaped sleeves. The hood is the key to the costume. A shell of the same material as the gown, it is lined in silk with the color or colors of the institution conferring the degree. The length of the hood indicates the degree: four feet for the doctor, three-and-a-half feet for the master, and three feet for the bachelor. The hood is sometimes omitted on the bachelor’s gown. The width of the velvet border also indicates degree; the widest border belongs to the doctor’s gown. The color of the hood’s border indicates the field of learning to which the degree pertains. The doctor’s hood may bear a single chevron on the lining. Two narrow chevrons indicate a bachelor, while the master may have a single chevron or have the hood divided equally into two colors. During the processional, candidates for the bachelor’s degree wear the tassels of their mortarboard hats on the right. After the students receive their diplomas, their tassels are moved to the left side of the cap. Some of the institutional colors likely to be seen at an academic ceremony are Columbia University’s light blue with white chevrons, Dartmouth College’s green, Harvard University’s crimson, New York University’s violet, Yale University’s dark blue, and Pratt Institute’s cadmium yellow. The mace, carried by the Grand Marshal of the Academic Procession and used to open and close the ceremonies, was a medieval symbol of the authority of the official before whom it was carried. The Pratt mace was designed by the late Paul Fjelde, emeritus professor of art and distinguished medalist. It was presented to the Institute by the class of 1956. The various fields of learning are indicated by color as follows: Arts, Letters, and Accountancy: white Commerce and Accountancy: olive brown Economics: copper Education or Pedagogy: light blue Engineering: orange Fine Arts: brown Architecture: blue violet Law: purple Library Science: lemon Medicine: green Music: pink Nursing: apricot Philosophy: dark blue Physical Education: sage green Public Administration: olive brown Science: golden yellow Social Service: citron Theology: scarlet Pratt Institute 125 Annual Commencement th Friday, May 16, 2014, 1 PM Radio City Music Hall • New York City School of Liberal Arts and Sciences School of Information and Library Science School of Architecture School of Art and Design The Institute Convocation The Conferring of Degrees AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL O beautiful for spacious skies, For amber waves of grain, For purple mountain majesties Above the fruited plain! As its architecture critic, Kimmelman has written on issues of public housing, public space, infrastructure, community development, and social responsibility. He served as chief art critic at The New York Times before creating the paper’s Abroad column—covering culture, political, and social affairs across Europe and around the world from 2007 to 2011. Since then he has written on Penn Station, the New York Public Library, saving the David and Gladys Wright House designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, redevelopment after Hurricane Sandy, as well as on public space and protests in Turkey, Rio de Janeiro, and postrevolutionary Cairo, among other issues at home and overseas, helping to reshape the public debate about urbanism, architecture, and architectural criticism. A regular contributor to The New York Review of Books, Kimmelman is the 2014 Franke Visiting Fellow at The Whitney Humanities Center at Yale University. In March 2014, he was awarded the Brendan Gill Prize from The Municipal Art Society of New York. His books include The Accidental Masterpiece: On the Art of Life and Vice Versa (Penguin Press, 2005) and Portraits: Talking with Artists at the Met, the Modern, the Louvre, and Elsewhere (Random House, 1998).
