NOTES ON ACADEMIC HERALDRY
The caps, gowns, and hoods of the academic procession date
back to the Middle Ages when they were common dress
for scholars. Monks and students wore them to keep warm
in the damp and drafty twelfth-century castles and halls of
learning.
The bachelor’s gown has a pleated front and long, pointed
sleeves. The master’s gown, which may be worn open,
is distinguishable by its long, square sleeves closed at
the end and slit near the elbow to permit the forearms to
come through. The doctor’s gown, which also may be worn
open, is trimmed with velvet panels down the front and has
three velvet bars on its bell-shaped sleeves.
The hood is the key to the costume. A shell of the same
material as the gown, it is lined in silk with the color
or colors of the institution conferring the degree. The length
of the hood indicates the degree: four feet for the doctor,
three-and-a-half feet for the master, and three feet for
the bachelor. The hood is sometimes omitted on the bachelor’s
gown. The width of the velvet border also indicates degree;
the widest border belongs to the doctor’s gown.
The color of the hood’s border indicates the field
of learning to which the degree pertains. The doctor’s
hood may bear a single chevron on the lining. Two narrow
chevrons indicate a bachelor, while the master may have
a single chevron or have the hood divided equally into
two colors.
During the processional, candidates for the bachelor’s
degree wear the tassels of their mortarboard hats on
the right. After the students receive their diplomas, their
tassels are moved to the left side of the cap.
The mace, carried by the Grand Marshal of the Academic
Procession and used to open and close the ceremonies,
was a medieval symbol of the authority of the official
before whom it was carried.
The Pratt mace was designed by the late Paul Fjelde,
emeritus professor of art and distinguished medalist.
It was presented to the Institute by the class of 1956.
The various fields of learning are indicated by color
as follows:
Arts, Letters, and Accountancy: white
Commerce and Accountancy: olive brown
Economics: copper
Education or Pedagogy: light blue
Engineering: orange
Fine Arts: brown
Architecture: blue violet
Law: purple
Library Science: lemon
Medicine: green
Music: pink
Nursing: apricot
Philosophy: dark blue
Physical Education: sage green
Public Administration: olive brown
Science: golden yellow
Social Service: citron
Theology: scarlet

America the Beautiful
O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea.

American painter Terry Winters has expanded the concerns of abstract art, beginning with botanically inspired
images and going on to explore biological processes and
mathematical systems. Richly associative and visionary
in scope, his art addresse the “interaction between information and imagination.” Winters’ process-based work
produces experimental, innovative pictures that generate
abundant reciprocal relationships between his paintings,
drawings, and prints.
Winters was born in New York in 1949 and received
a B.F.A. from Pratt Institute in 1971. Following his first
exhibition at Sonnabend Gallery in 1982, his work has
been the subject of numerous museum surveys. These
include the Tate Gallery, London; the Walker Art Center,
Minneapolis; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los
Angeles; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New
York; IVAM, Centre Julio Gonzales, Valencia; Whitechapel
Gallery, London; Kunsthalle Basel, Switzerland; the
Addison Gallery of American Art, Andover; and the Irish
Museum of Modern Art, Dublin. Retrospectives of his
drawings and prints have been organized by the Detroit
Institute of Arts; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New
York; Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich; and the Louisiana
Museum of Modern Art, Denmark. A complete archive
of his printed works is held at the Colby College Museum
of Art, Waterville.
In 2013, Winters was elected to the American Academy
of Arts and Letters. His work is currently featured in
The Painter’s Cabinet: Terry Winters’ Dialogue with Nature
at Kunsthaus Graz, Austria. Winters is represented by
Matthew Marks Gallery in New York and Los Angeles.

JASON VIGNERI-BEANE
ADJUNCT ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR
GRADUATE ARCHITECTURE AND
URBAN DESIGN
Jason Vigneri-Beane is a faculty member in the Graduate
Architecture and Urban Design program at Pratt Institute,
where he coordinates the M.S. Arch. degree program and
thesis sequence, M.Arch. option studios and digital media
courses, and the Graduate Architecture and Urban Design
in Rome program.
He is primarily responsible for teaching a range of studios
and media courses for both incoming and upper-level
students that explore relationships among contemporary
design techniques, architectural categories of production,
and the history of discourse in the discipline. In addition,
he works with thesis students to develop near-future strategies for emerging architectural and urban scenarios, with
an emphasis on techno-social change and how architects
can develop agile positions on the role of design in our
changing world. His work with students in Rome, Florence,
and Venice endeavors to help students understand historical and contemporary incarnations of architectural
and urban thinking as evolving along a trajectory to which
they can contribute. Jason is the founding principal of
Split Studio and founding partner of Planetary ONE. Both
of these Brooklyn-based practices are interested in multidisciplinary approaches to design with a concentration on
working across scales and media that include graphics,
industrial design, architecture, urbanism, and ecology.
His individual and collaborative projects include architectural robots, information-harvesting drones, amphibious
buildings, future cities, swarming infrastructures, prefabricated landscapes, and cyborg ecologies.
His recent and forthcoming publications include projects
for aquatic settlements and informal infrastructures,
as well as texts on sci-fi design, floating buildings,
and swarming building systems. He has taught, lectured,
and exhibited in North America, Europe, and Asia.
