ART B RITAN N IA
The exhibition showcases the very best of British contemporary art. Featured in
the show will be established mid-career artists as well as young emerging talent,
who already feature in important shows and collections, such as the recent ‘New
Order’ show at the Saatchi Gallery. British art resists condensing down to a few,
yet this exhibition aims to deliver a range of work that captures key aspects
of artistic practices currently in the UK, acknowledging the role of painting in
contemporary practice. The sub-title of the show is a ‘special relationship’ as it
points to the Anglo/American friendship and ‘hands across the ocean’, but also
the special relationship between artworks that co-exist and at times compete in a
space. On exhibition will be a collection of small paintings by 40 artists. The minishow is based on a group show previously held at the Lamb and Lion Gallery.

The Craig Robins Collection is a private contemporary art and design collection
that includes works by John Baldessari, Richard Tuttle, Paul McCarthy and Nate
Lowman, Jean Prouvé, Zaha Hadid, Ron Arad and Maarten Baas. Pieces in the
collection represent a wide spectrum of artistic perspectives and encompass the
disciplines of design, art, and architecture. Believing that art should be shared,
pieces from the collection are constantly rotated and put on display in the Miami
Design District headquarter offices of Dacra, the development company founded
by Robins in 1987.

Late 1950’s Europe saw a number of artistic movements whose influences
transcended national frontiers. Key artists from Europe and Latin America worked
together to counter individualistic notions of artistic practice and grouped with
others to form the intellectual basis of groups such as Zero, T, N, GRAV, Nouvelle
Tendance, Optic and Kinetic among others. Works by groundbreaking artists like
Francois Morellet, Bernard Aubertin, Jesús Soto, Luis Tomasello, Gregorio
Vardanega, Frank Malina, Julio Le Parc and Carlos Cruz Diez reflect the spirit of
our exhibit: the placement of the scientific notion of research as the basis for
artistic expression.

SexED, curated by Adarsha Benjamin, is an alternative satellite art fair
housed in the abandoned walls of Always Flowers, which could be described
as an unconventional and upcycled gallery space with myriad opportunities.
Through live performance, sculpture, sound, installation and visual art,
a collective of boundary pushing artists will create a plural-sensory experience
that challenges the history, definition, and relevance of Sexual Education.
Artists Petra Collins, Adarsha Benjamin, Ryan Heffington, James Georgopoulos,
Amanda Charchian, Dugan O’Neal, Lola Rose Thompson, Alia Penner,
Gregory Siff, Guy Blakeslee, Cole Sternberg, Future Eyes, and others,
will use various mediums to explore the theme of ‘sexual education’ — ideas
about censorship, the internet, sexual identity, and the future of sex in America
provide fodder for this group of young, emerging and established artists.

On the occasion of Art Basel Miami Beach, Berluti presents 4 unique pieces by
designer Maarten Baas. One valet, two mirrors and a chaise longue, all created
and developed in collaboration with, and for, the Berluti house. The pieces are
staged in the Miami store’s two windows. The first window displays the valet - the
central piece of the Berluti man’s dressing room - and the two mirrors. The Clay
Fan and the Chaise Longue are displayed in the second window, in reference to
Miami’s “dolce farniente” spirit. Berluti is working with Maarten Baas around their
common passion for fun, off-the-wall, handcrafted items. Objects hand-modelled
in Baas’ unique clay collection, the designer’s exclusive, synthetic resin-based clay
which coats a metal structure giving it round softness. A unique “savoir faire”
that’s in line with Berluti’s bespoke, high-end men’s couture. In reinterpreting
these pieces, Maarten Baas is breaking the ground rules regarding classic
furniture, with creations that are full of humour and in total sync with Berluti’s
sometimes unconventional and facetious tone.
