Jitka Hosprová
Jitka Hosprová
Viola Soloist
2013
Biography
“Jitka has a passion for the viola and strives to make audiences take notice
of this overlooked instrument, exploring the existing solo viola literature
and encouraging composers to write new works. She is a stunning artist
to watch!” - DeeAnne Hunstein, New York
Jitka Hosprová started playing viola at the age of seven and in 1989 was accepted to
the Conservatoire in Pilsen where she studied under Jan Motlík. Four years later, she
was awarded at the International Beethoven´s Hradec Competition. She graduated
from the Academy of Performing Arts Prague (AMU) under Jan Pruska and won a
scholarship for a Master’s course in Semmering, Austria. Whilst there, she worked
as leader of the viola section in the International orchestra "Die Junge
Österreichische Philharmonie" and represented the Academy of Performing Arts as
a soloist at the international meeting of universities in Graz, Austria.
A member of the Bennewitz Quartet since 1998, Hosprová has worked under the
leadership of such top ensembles as the Amadeus Quartet, Alban Berg Quartet, and
Smetana Quartet and has performed both in the Czech Republic and abroad. In 2000
she took part in the Festival of Chamber Music, organized by Süddeutscher
Rundfunk radio station and completed the popular “String quartets of Leos
Janácek” CD with Hans Krása and Pavel Haas.
Her first solo CD “Rhapsody” with Czech composers Martin Slavický and Lukás
Bodorová was released in January 2001 and was followed in August 2005 by a
collection of Czech viola concertos in association with Prague Chamber Orchestra.
Hosprová’s immensely successful 2005 tour of Washington, D. C. and New York
secured her cooperation with prestigious New York agency Hunstein Artists, and
the next season she was introduced to an American audience in Washington, D.C. at
Ronald Regan's Medal of Freedom event in memory of Dr. Milada Horáková. More
US concerts dates followed with Hosprová performing as soloist of the French
Chamber Orchestra in Connecticut and Los Angeles and at a solo recital in New
York in 2007.
As a soloist, she has entertained audiences at the
following music festivals:
Jitka Hosprová is not only a much-sought-after soloist but a celebrated chamber player too, having
performed with such eminent Czech groups as Wihan's Quartet, Stamic's Quartet, Kocian's Quartet,

together with harpist Kateina Englichová and Luxembourgish flutist Carlo Jans in 2005, and the group has
