Anja Pöche is a member of the à-capella ensemble Calmus, one of the most exciting
voices in vocal music and well known to the Irish audiences. She performs regularly as
a solo singer in oratorio and cantata concerts throughout Europe and the USA, often
with emphasis on J.S. Bach and his contemporaries. She has established a close
relationship with Camerata Kilkenny and the Barrow River Arts Festival ever since her
first, much acclaimed, Irish appearance in 2011.
Finghin Collins makes a welcome return since he performed a lieder recital with the
tenor James Gilchrist at the very first Barrow River Arts Festival back in 2011. One of the
most important musicians to emerge from Ireland in recent times he established his
international reputation by winning the 1999 Clara Haskil International Piano
Competition. Since then he has performed with leading orchestras throughout the
world. Among his many recordings are two double CDs of Schumann’s solo piano music
for Claves Records in Switzerland which have received widespread acclaim, including
Editor’s Choice in Gramophone magazine in 2006.
Barry McGovern reads Flann O’Brien
The focus of Barry McGovern’s reading at this year’s festival will be on the writings of
the great Irish novelist, playwright and satirist Flann O’Brien. Dublin born Barry
McGovern’s distinguished acting career has covered film, television and in particular
theatre where he has become internationally renowned for his interpretation of the
works of Samuel Beckett. In 2012 he received an Ovation Awards nomination for Lead
Actor in a Play for the role of Vladimir in the Center Theatre Group production of
“Waiting for Godot”
“Barry McGovern’s astounding performance was not only the best of the festival, but also
among the best I’ve ever seen…genius, no other word for it” - Sun Herald.

Compositions by Barry Guy and improvisations
"Hearing Marilyn Crispell play solo piano is like monitoring an active volcano. She is one of a
very few pianists who rise to the challenge of free jazz.” - The New York Times
Marilyn Crispell has been a composer and performer of contemporary improvised music
since 1978. For ten years, she was a member of the Anthony Braxton Quartet and the
Reggie Workman Ensemble, and she has performed and recorded extensively as a
soloist and with players on the American and international jazz scene. In 1996 she was
given an Outstanding Alumni Award by the New England Conservatory, and in 2004,
was cited as being one of their 100 most outstanding alumni of the past 100 years.
Percussionist Paul Lytton is both an inventive, textural drummer in the tradition of
European free jazz, and a pioneer in electronic sound processing and the use of
homemade instruments of his own invention. Lytton made his first appearances on the
British creative music scene in the late 60s , and his influence – particularly in live
electronics can still be observed in the experimentation of a new generation of
improvisers over 30 years later.

Songs and Improvisations
Savina Yannatou’s unusual curriculum vitae includes songs for children and adults, a
repertoire ranging from the Mediaeval to the Baroque, the Mediterranean to the
Balkans, from Sephardic to Smyrnaean traditions, and from free improvisation through
free jazz to music that defies classification.
"Dark-toned but ambrosial, highly disciplined yet seemingly bursting with a soul of pure
flame, the rather staggering Athens-born singer Savina Yannatou is a virtuosic chameleon
adept at an extensive range of vocal tradition…..” John Payne, L.A. Weekly
Barry Guy is a renowned improviser and composer influential in the world of jazz and
free improvisation as in that of contemporary music. His concert works for chamber
orchestras, chamber groups and soloists have been widely performed and his skilful
and inventive writing has resulted in an exceptional series of compositions.
His most recent project is the “Blue Shroud Band” which performs his work “The Blue
Shroud” based on Picasso’s painting “Guernica” with texts by the Irish poet Kerry
Hardie. Barry Guy continues to give solo recitals throughout Europe as well as
continuing associations with colleagues involved in improvised, baroque and
contemporary music.

vast experience as viola player of the Arditti Quartet and the Ensemble
Intercontemporain and his close collaboration with most of the leading composers of
today, he has become a unique performer of music of many different styles, ranging
from minimalist understatement to the cutting edge of new techniques and new
technologies. He has always felt at home as an improviser, and now more and more so

“Camerata Kilkenny gave the impression that time is to be treasured, not to be rushed, that

by Bach?” Review Irish Times 2014

Maya Homburger and the Irish harpsichordist and organist Malcolm Proud. They have
performed at major festivals throughout Ireland and Europe. In this final concert of the
