Classes will be given in the morning and afternoon starting at 9.30. The maximum of students for each professor shall be 10. Chamber Music lessons: all students that choose this option in the enrolment form will be part of chamber music groups, under the direction of one of the professors of the course (a list of works will be posted on our website shortly). The students will choose those pieces they would like to work from the list posted in our website, which must be specified in the enrolment form in order of preference (we advise to bring your own parts). When, in the professor’s judgement, the group or student has prepared its chosen work sufficiently, it will be performed at a public concert. In case the number of participants outnumbers the expectations, there will be an audition prior to the concerts, in any case the director of the course will take the final decision. period, enrolment and course fees The course will begin on Monday 17 August and will end on 26 August with the students’ concert. In 1992 he became member of the Euskadi Symphony Orchestra and in 1996 won the First Prize at the Concurso Internacional de Música de Cámara Ciudad de Manresa. He has played at many important Spanish Festivals such as Quincena Musical de San 8 ] Sebastian, Ciclo de Música Contemporánea de Málaga and Temporada de Música de Cámara de Bilbao. He has worked with different ensembles: Cuarteto ïndigo, Cuarteto Cadem, Cuarteto Gala, Quinteto Neofusión, Camerata Cambrensis and Kuraia. Since 2001 he is violin teacher at the Basque Conservatoire “MUSIKENE” San Sebastian and he is regularly invited to give masterclasses all across Spain. NATHANIEL VALLOIS violin N athaniel Vallois was born in Paris and later studied in Israel and in London. His teachers included Miriam Solovieff, Yair Kless, Itzhak Rashkovsky and Ruggiero Ricci, and he has drawn much inspiration from his association with the great American violinist Camilla Wicks. The recipient of many prizes and awards, he has concertized extensively as soloist and chamber musician, including many concerto and recital appearances in London’s main venues and across Britain. He has performed concertos by Bartók, Beethoven, Berg, Brahms, Britten, Bruch, Dvorak, Glazunov, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Shostakovich, Sibelius, Tchaikovsky and Walton. He was a founder member of the London Archduke Piano Trio and performs with many chamber music groups. He is the Senior Violin Teacher and Lecturer at the Birmingham Conservatoire, and is on the violin and chamber music staff at the Purcell School of Music. As well as being regularly invited to play and teach in music courses and festivals in Britain, he has performed, broadcast and given masterclasses in the U.S.A, France, Germany, Spain, Israel, Romania, Turkey, South Africa. In 2014 he gave a tour of recitals and masterclasses in China, and performed and taught in Brazil. Nathaniel’s recordings include a recital CD of French music entitled Beau Soir and a CD of chamber music by Hugh Wood on Toccata Classics, which was awarded 5 stars by the BBC Music Magazine. He has a great interest in historical artists and recordings, is a regular contributor to The Strad magazine and consultant for record companies. ] 9 LEO DE NEVE viola L eo de Neve began his studies (already at a very young age) under the guidance of Kati Sebestyen at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels and later with Bruno Giuranna in Berlin and Ervin Schiffer in Tilburg. For 16 years he was the 1st Principal Viola in ‘deFilharmonie’ in Antwerp and in ‘La MonnaieOpéra’ in Brussels. As promotor of his instrument he is a constant source of inspiration for contemporary composers and premiered works by Celis, Henderickx and Shegmans. He is also a member of the ‘Spiegel String Quartet’ www.spiegelstringquartet (in Residence - Royal Conservatory in Antwerp) and the ‘Arpae Ensemble’ www.arpae.be (flute, viola, harp). With these ensembles as well as 10 ] soloist he performs regularly in Europe, Asia and South Africa. He has recorded many CDs with works by Chausson, Lekeu, Schubert, Debussy, Bartok, Schumann, Janacek, Jongen, Scarlatti… for many labels: MDG, Naxos, Marco Polo, Phaedra, Megadisc, Vox Temporis, … Because teaching is very important to him, he gives masterclasses (Europe, Japan...) and he is professor ‘viola’ and coordinator ‘lower strings’ at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp (Artesis University), where he likes to give his knowledge and experience as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral musician at the service of upcoming young musicians. He is playing a beautiful italian D. Techler (Rome 1702) viola. JON THORNE viola/string quartets J on Thorne studied at the London College of Music with Maureen Smith and Penny Filer, then at the Royal College of Music with Simon Rowland-Jones and later with Mark Knight. Upon leaving the RCM, Jon joined the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Jon left the BSO to form the Bronte String Quartet. Prizewinners at both the Royal OverSeas League and the Cremona International Quartet Competitions, the Bronte Quartet played at venues such as London’s Wigmore Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall and Purcell Room, and many festivals throughout the UK and abroad. Jon joined the Badke Quartet in 2009 and has played with them at venues throughout the UK and abroad including the Wigmore Hall (live on BBC R3), Kings Place, the Aix, Montreux, Ljubljana and Mecklenburg Festivals and the Concertgebouw. They have also broadcast on BBC R3, Classic Fm and on French National Radio and TV. Forthcoming engagements include a return to the Concertgebouw, Esterhazy Court Theatre and a tour of the USA. In addition to his work with the Badke Quartet, Jon has played with many of the major orchestras in the UK and currently holds the position of Principal Viola with the Oxford Philomusica. He has also been guest principal with The Philharmonia, The London Philharmonic Orchestra, English Chamber Orchestra and Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Jon has appeared on numerous film releases, from Batman to Almodovar. Jon also performs on many pop albums, from Amy Winehouse to Primal Scream. He recently appeared as a Soloist on the Naxos release of the Puccini Requiem and Malpiero De Profundis with the Vassari Singers. Jon is a strong believer in music education and is a Viola & Chamber Music Professor at the Royal Academy of Music, London. Previously he taught viola at the Royal College of Music, the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and the Royal Holloway University. He is viola and chamber music coach for various courses and has given masterclasses at festivals across the UK and Europe. He is also a trustee of Vacation Chamber Orchestras. Jon is a Juror for the European Music Festival for Young People in Neerpelt, Belgium and has been Juror for The Royal Overseas League Chamber Music Competition, North London Music Festival Viola Competition, Trinity College of Music’s John Barbirolli Quartet Competition, the Somerset Young Musician or the Year, Ripon Young Musician of the Year, Hurstpierpoint College and Tiffin School. Jon plays a fine viola by Giovani Grancino 1692. ] 11 NABÍ CABESTANY cello/chamber music N abi Cabestany is active in many facets and styles, his work focuses on chamber music performances which has led him to give concerts throughout Europe, Japan and United States with musicians such as James Campbell or Christian Zacharias. Some of his concerts have been radio and television broadcasted. His recordings are with ensembles ranging from duo with piano to solo performance with orchestra. He has given several recitals of solo cello, which extends the dedication to contemporary music. As a soloist he has premiered works by Joaquim Homs, Xavier Benguerel, Benet Casablancas, Xavier Pagès, Voro Garcia. He has recorded a number of CDs of Spanish composers. Born in Barcelona, he began his music training at the Montserrat Boys Choir. At the University of Arts in Berlin he graduated as student of Prof. Wolfgang Boettcher following a Postgraduate Education and Interpretation degree at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He earned the prestigious Artist Diploma from Indiana University where he studied with Janos Starker with a grant from “la Caixa” foundation. He received Honor Prize at the Maria Canals International Competition in Barcelona. Founding member of the “Barcelona Barroc”, an early music ensemble which performs with 12 ] various combinations, he developed his passion for music and it led him to perform baroque cello at festivals in the United States, Portugal, France, Spain, Holland and Costa Rica. As an orchestral musician he has collaborated with the Symphony Orchestra of the Bavarian Radio (Munich) served as assistant principal of the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester, Youth Orchestra of the European Union (EUYO) and the Pacific Music Festival, performing under the baton of Riccardo Muti, Lorin Maazel, Vladimir Ashkenazy and Claudio Abbado among others. He collaborated as soloist and principal with the Symphony Orchestra of the Balearics, the Symphony Orchestra of Castilla y Leon, Ciudad de Granada Orchestra, Valencia Community Orchestra, Orquestra de Cadaqués and the Orchestre de Chambre de Toulouse. He is currently on leave from the Barcelona Symphony where he has been member for 12 years as a soloist and as assistant soloist. Nabí has an intense educational activity, particularly in the training of young cellists. He has been teacher at the International Music Course and Festival in Cervera and he is also member of the School of Music of CataloniaBarcelona and the Institut Supérieur des Arts de Toulouse. ALEXANDER BAILLEI cello A lexander Baillie is internationally recognised as one of the finest cellists of his generation. He began playing the cello at the comparatively late age of twelve having been directly inspired by the late Jacqueline du Pré. He went on to study at London’s Royal College of Music and with André Navarra in Vienna. He has appeared with many British orchestras and has worked with Sir Simon Rattle, Sir John Eliot Gardiner and has appeared regularly as cello soloist in concertos, recitals and festivals throughout the world. He has given notable first performances of works by Penderecki, Hans Werner Henze, Takemitsu, Colin Matthew and H.K.Gruber. Recordings include the Tippett Triple Concerto with the composer conducting and the Shostakovich First Concerto with Benjamin Zander and the Boston Philharmonic. His version of the Britten Cello Suites achieved the highest acclaim in the New York press. He features in the film “Dvorak...who?” about the motivation for young people falling in love with classical music. Together with pianist partner James Lisney he has been promoting the Beethoven Project in England and Germany. He is Professor of Cello at the Hochschule für Künste, Bremen and founder member of “Gathering of the Clans” Cello School. ] 13 HARRI MÄKI clarinet H arri Mäki began studying the clarinet with Kari Kriikku. He graduated from Conservatoire de Musique de Geneve with the Premiere Prix from the class of Thomas Friedli. He has also studied privately with Osmo Vänskä, Antony Pay, John McCaw and Charles Neidich. He is the solo clarinetist and a founding member of the Tapiola Sinfonietta (established in 1988). He is also the Lecturer on Clarinet at the Sibelius Academy and the Artistic Director 14 ] of Crusell Festival in Uusikaupunki. He teaches clarinet master classes and chamber music both in Europe and NorthAmerica. Mäki has performed frequently as a soloist and a chamber musician in most European countries, South America, Far-East and USA. Harri Mäki’s performances as a soloist and chamber musician can also be heard on the BIS and Ondine labels. MILAN RERICHA clarinet I nternationally respected clarinet virtuoso and teacher MILAN RERICHA performs as a soloist and teaches master classes around the world. In May 2013 he was chosen among the final four candidates for the prestigious post of Professor of Clarinet classes at the Vienna Conservatory. As a soloist he collaborates with leading orchestras such as Porto Alegre Symphonic Orchestra OSPA, Solistes Europeens Luxembourg, Bucharest Philharmonic Orchestra, Prague Philharmonia, Brixia Symphonic Orchestra, Tokyo Chamber Orchestra, ... Milan Rericha has performed in major concert halls in the USA (New York - Carnegie Hal, San Francisco - Symphony Hall, Chicago - Symphony Hall), Japan ( Tokyo - Suntory Hall), etc. In Europe he performed at prestigious music festivals like Festwochen Luzern, Salzburger Festwochen, Wiener Festwochen, Schleswig Holstein Festival, Prague Spring, Menuhin Music Festival, City of London Music Festival, BBC Music Festival,... As a teacher, Milan Rericha worked in many countries around the world. He has led master classes at music academies in Argentina (Buenos Aires, Mendoza) , Brazil (Porto Alegre, Sao Paulo), Colombia (Bogota ), Japan (Tokyo, Kyoto, Saporo), China ( Beijing ), USA ( Chicago, Boston, San Francisco), Italy (Rimini, Porlezza, Milano), Slovenia (Krško) and Spain (Musica de Salceda). He taught clarinet master class in Dresden (Musikhochschule C.M.Weber), Enschede and Amsterdam, JAMU in Brno Conservatory, in Prague Conservatory and Conservatory in Teplice. Since 2004 he recorded exclusively for the Swiss publishing company MARCOPHON - EMR. In 2002 he became a professor at the prestigious Academy of Music in Lugano, Switzerland. In 2011 Gonzalez Reeds has selected Milan as their main artist. Since 2012, he is the ambassador of the Czech company RZ, which is a manufacturer of woodwind instruments and playing the clarinet master RZ. Since 2013 he is the artistic director of the Association CCA - Czech Clarinet Art, which is also the organizer of the International Clarinet Competition. ] 15 ALBERT NIETO piano A lbert Nieto holds a doctorate of the University of Valencia with his research about Francisco Llácer Plá. Su obra pianística: Un piano sugerente. His piano career, especially dedicated to Spanish and contemporary music, has made him obtain the recognition of the public and critics. On the research side he has also addressed this repertoire, and proof of this is the recent publication of his critical edition of Isaac Albéniz’s Iberia, which has been accompanied by the recording of some of his pieces and has been highly praised by critics. Albert has performed with orchestras such as the Symphonic of Barcelona, Balearic Islands, Bilbao, Vallés, Belgrade, Antwerp; and with musicians such as Joan Enric Lluna, Jaime Martin, François Monciero and Asier Polo, Santiago Juan and Victor Parra. He is a founding member of Trio Gerhard. He has performed at festivals such as the 16 ] Quincena Musical of San Sebastian, Santander, Granada, Peralada, Bordeaux, Fundación Juan March and Musée Marmottan Monet in Paris and has premiered over seventy works by Spanish composers. Albert Nieto is regularly invited to give courses by other Music Academies and centers for teacher training. He currently is professor at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Castilla-La Mancha. He regularly writes articles for magazines and is author of the books La digitación pianística (Piano fingering), Contenidos de la técnica pianística (Piano techniques), El pedal de resonancia: el alma del piano (The sustain pedal: the soul of the piano), and La clase colectiva de piano (The piano group class). Forthcoming is the book “La gestualidad expresiva del pianista: el espíritu del directo” (The gestures of the pianist: the spirit of live performance). CHARLES WIFFEN piano/chamber music C harles Wiffen is Head of the Department of Music and Associate Dean of Music and Performing Arts at Bath Spa University and previously lectured at the Royal College of Music where he was Grove Research Fellow from 1998 to 2004. He has also taught at Trinity College of Music in London, and regularly performs and gives masterclasses at Dartington International Summer School and at Festival/ Curso Internacional de Musica Vitoria-Gasteiz in Spain. Born in London, Charles has performed as a pianist extensively throughout the UK, as well as further afield in France, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Germany, the USA, Israel, China, Taiwan, Japan and Africa. He has given recitals in London’s Wigmore Hall and Purcell Room, and in Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall, and his festival appearances have included the Arundel, Brighton, Bath, BBC Proms, Buckingham, Chelsea and Warwick Festivals. He has also performed in the Park Lane Group series in London and was selected by the late Isaac Stern to perform in ‘Jerusalem Encounters’. Charles has broadcast for BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM and has recorded several CDs for labels including Toccata Classics. He is a member of the London Archduke Trio and Contemporary Consort. Charles studied at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, and at the Royal College of Music in London. His teachers included Maria Curcio and Yonty Solomon and he has had lessons and masterclasses from Emanuel Ax and Yefim Bronfman. He also played in chamber music classes for Isaac Stern and Yo-Yo Ma. Awards include the Oude Meester Music Prize, the Jim Joel Prize and the Marjorie and Arnold Ziff Memorial Prize. ] 17 LORENA GARCÍA vocal L orena Garcia was born in Vitoria-Gasteiz and studied at the Conservatorio Superior de Musica “Jesus Guridi” with Amaia Añua and Isabel Alvarez. From an early age she was recognised as a great voice singing as a soloist in Escolanía Udaberria and Coro Psallite. She continued her studies in Barcelona at the Conservatorio Superior del Liceo with Carmen Bustamante and Manel Cabero graduating with the highest marks. Furthermore she received lessons from Begoña Alberdi, focussing on Lied and Opera. She was introduced to the world of early music by counter tenor Carlos Mena which led her to study in Salamanca, El Escorial, Daroca (Zaragoza), Granada and Sant Feliu de Guíxols (Girona), with teachers such as Marta Almajano, Maria Cristina Kiehr, Jennifer Smith, Jose Antonio Carril, Cristina Miatello, Jordi Savall, Montserrat Figueras and Adriana Fernández. These studies culminated in a degree in historic 18 ] voice by ESMUC (Cataluña Music School). In 1997 she made her debut with Capilla Peñaflorida and the Euskadi Symphony Orchestra in Bach’s “St John’s Passion” at the Victoria Eugenia Theatre. She has sung as a soloist internationally and has been working with conductors such as Juanjo Mena, Enrique García Asensio, Jordi Savall, Óscar Gershenson and Gabriel Garrido. She has performed and recorded with La Capilla Real de Madrid, La Capilla Real de Catalunya, Speculum, Ensemble Scandicus, Il Nobil Diletto, Les Alysés and Ensemble Elyma. She currently teaches Music Education, Physic-Corporal Therapeutics, Cos-art for musicians and singers at the Tortosa Music Conservatoire and at Vilanova i la Geltrú Conservatoire (Barcelona). She is also conducting research about “The problems singers face with Historic interpretations”. MARÍA ÁNGEL GARCÍA accompanist FCIMV M aría Ángel García was born in Yecla (Murcia). She has already achieved an impressive artistic career: She has won first prizes in well renowned national and international piano competitions. She has performed to critical acclaim in numerous concerts and solo recitals in Spain, Portugal, England, Germany, Austria and the United States. She performs regularly for prestigious Festivals and Workshops in Spain and England. Maria Angel lives in Bath, U.K and combines her concert career with teaching.
