2011 Winter Edition New.qxd 1/28/11 3:01 PM Page 1 lighting the way by sharing ideas Winter Edition 2011 EXECUTIVE’S SECRETARY COLUMN The ICA continues to make efforts to increase benefits for coaches and young people. We have partnered to provide a FREE RECRUITING WEBINAR for all coaches, athletes and parents in Illinois. Very reasonable and valuable information is available to all who download this from the ICA website homepage, www.icacoach.org Many questions are answered and direction is given to those young people who are either going through or anticipate going through the recruiting process. John K. Elder Executive Secretary Illinois Coaches Association Coaches are more needed as role models for young people today than ever before. We need to take this roll seriously and take an active roll in the lives of the young people with whom we work. Many young people today live in one parent homes and have no role model to follow; coaches may be their only person they can turn to for guidance. KEEP THIS FOREMOST IN YOUR MIND!!! The Illinois Coaches Association strives to make as many membership benefits available as possible. The $1000000 Liability Insurance Policy is one of the major benefits and it will be greater beginning August 1, 2010 as the policy will cover member coaches for teaching responsibilities in the classroom should no other coverage be in place. This is a major step for the ICA. Where else can you get this coverage for so few dollars? We can’t stress the importance of our corporate partners in the operation of the ICA. Many programs would not be available if it weren’t for these people. VictorySwap, a film exchange company has come onboard to help the ICA fund their programs. Check their website and ad in this edition. Remember, we work daily with parents’ most prized possessions, their children. The ICA is constantly working to improve sports activities for young people as well as benefits for coaches. Get Involved! Be a member! Help make a difference! To Gain Complete Information and review testimonials visit the website of the course sponsor— www.educresources.info Football Officials Needed-Illinois High Schools Coaches and Athletic Directors are encountering much difficulty in securing officials for Football Games. Many games are being moved to alternate dates, thus disrupting the organization of high school teams. Their is definitely a need for interested parties to become involved as a high school football official. This a great way to stay involved in high school sports and work with young people. Encourage young people interested in football to pursue this avocation, or at least visit with some veteran official about the benefits of this involvement.Who knows where it could lead them!! Contact the IHSA 309-663-6377 ILLINOIS COACHES ASSOCIATION has a brochure outlining benefits of membership and activities available through membership. Contact the ICA Office and we will send you an ample amount for your coaches. 3 2011 Winter Edition New.qxd 4 1/28/11 3:01 PM Page 4 2011 Winter Edition New.qxd 1/28/11 3:01 PM Page 5 5 2011 Winter Edition New.qxd 1/28/11 3:01 PM Page 6 ITCCCA NEWS The Illinois Track and Cross Country Coaches Association conducts induction ceremony for 2011 Hall of Fame Honorees and Coach of Year Winners at Annual Clinic held January 8, 2011 at Oak ParkRiver Forest High School. ICA Takes Steps to Help Families with Recruiting With budget cuts, addressing the needs of our student athletes and their parents has increasingly become more difficult. Managing their expectations when it comes to coaching and recruiting has become nearly impossible. With new NCAA rules regarding on line credit recovery having taken effect Aug 1, 2010, it has become that much more important to make sure our families are properly educated on this subject matter. With the advent of modern technology, our parents and kids are only a few clicks away for gaining the recruiting information they yearn for. The internet has also created a growing industry we commonly refer to as recruiting services. Some of these services provide good information. The overwhelming vast majority however are looking to capitalize on our parents and kids weakness…the promise of landing an athletic scholarship. This solution is made available through a 501(c)3 non-profit program at no cost to our parents/kids. Student/parent information is not rented or sold to third parties. Third party companies are not openly solicited to advertise on the program. For that reason the ICA is now providing a pure clean webinar solution on our homepage to properly educate our families about the recruiting process, addressing these and other topics: • • • • • • • • • • • Three rules of being a parent Scholarship myths and facts NAIA and JUCO education Scholarships, do they differ? The Name Game Negotiate/Cooperative Education Dangers of social networking/cell phones National Letter of Intent NCAA/NAIA Eligibility Centers Recruiting Services NCAA core course requirements ICA strongly encourages you to promote our recruiting webinar by making your families aware that is available and ready to be viewed whenever their schedule permits. Simply go to www.icacoach.org and click on the NCAA/NAIA/JUCO Eligibility and Recruiting webinar link on the homepage. ICA is happy to provide this service to our members and athletic community. 7 2011 Winter Edition New.qxd 1/28/11 3:01 PM Page 8 IHSFCA CLINIC SCHEDULE 2011 Thursday: March 31, 2011 Zone Run Game From Spread and Under Center” Hawthorn Suites B 3:00-8:30 pm Registration Exhibitor set-up Chief Illiniwek Ballroom Sean Streeter, 6A Hyde Park Academy High School “Thunderbird Two Shell Coverage Variations and Zone Blitzes” Hawthorn Suites C 3:00 pm University of Illinois Football Practice Memorial Stadium Illinois Football Staff Speakers Alumni Room • Offensive Game Planning Badger Room • Quarterbacks/Inside Receivers Wolverine Room • Offensive Line/ Running Backs Hawkeye Room • Special Teams Buckeye Room • Defensive Backs Hoosier Room • Defensive line Illinois Room • Linebackers Recruiting Lounge Strength Training Weight Room • Demonstrations Mark Hendrickson, Head Coach Western Illinois University ,”No Huddle-Leather Neck Style” Alumni Room Hilton Garden 8:00-9-30 pm 9:35-11:30 Staff/Alumni Room 6:00 am 7:00 am 8:30-8:45 am 8:45-9:30 am Exhibitor set-up Registration Hilton Garden Inn IHSA Speaker Craig Anderson • Illini Ballroom Ron Zook Head Football Coach University of Illinois • Illini Ballroom Vic Koenning • Defensive Coordinator 9:30-9:55 am Coaches Awardsm• Illini Ballroom 10:15-11:30 am Jon Gruden, Current ESPN Color Analyst, Former Head Coach of the Oakland Raiders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers And 2002 Super Bowl Champs Illini Ballroom Lunch on your own Session 1 Frank Lenti 8A, Mount Carmel High School “Coaching Coaches” Hawthorn Suites A Rick Little, 7A Quincy Senior High School Developing A Successful Quarterback” Hawthorn Suites B Chuck Spagnoli, 6A Lake Forest High School “The Lake Forest Passing Game” Hawthorn Suites C 2:10-3:15 Chad Musselman, 1A Villa Grove High School Illinois Room “Plays and Formations to Complement The Triple Option” Homewood Suites 3:15-3:30 3:30-4:30 4:40-6:00 6:00-7:15 7:30-8:45 Visit Exhibitors/Travel Illinois Coaches On The Field: Practice Memorial Stadium Lou Hernandez Illinois Strength and Agility Program Evening Cookout Great West Hall Memorial Stadium Evening Session Dan Rourke, 5A Glenwood Chatham High School “Glenwood Offense (A Balanced Attack) Alumni Room Hilton Garden Mike Rude, Hall of Fame Speaker “Running The Princeton Single Wing In The 21st Century Badger Room Hilton Garden Mike Uremovic, St Francis University “QB Run Game (Power, Read Zone, Outside Zone, Screen Game) Buckeye/Wolverine Room, Hilton Garden Fred Fimbres, College of DuPage “Defending The Spread Run or Pass In The 4-3” Hoosier/Hawkeye Room Hilton Garden Tim Lester, Elmhurst College “Vertical Passing Game” Recruiting Lounge Memorial Stadium Dave DeJaegher, 4A Rock Island Alleman High School “ Alleman 50 Defense Fundamentals and Concepts” Badger Room Hilton Garden Steve Dinkel, Offensive Coordinator “Developing Championship Offensive Line Play”Wisconsin Whitewater Team Room Memorial Stadium Jim Unruh, 3A Illini West High School “Maintaining A Program: Our Philosophies, And Favorite Drills” Buckeye/Wolverine Room Hilton Garden Tom Little, 1A Brown County High School “Tackling Techniques And Drills” Hawthorne Suites A Job Linboom, 2A Deer Creek Mackinaw “ The Up-Tempo No Huddle Wing-T” Hoosier/Hawkeye Room Hilton Garden Brett Cazlett, 5A Dunlap High School “Dunlap’s Empty, Run and Pass Package” Hawthorn Suites B Visit Exhibitors/Travel Session 2 Joe Sanchez, 8A Barrington High School “Running The Jet Sweep Series Out Of The Pro I Offense” Hawthorn Suites A Dan Wetzel, 4A Herscher High School “Inside, Outside 8 Mike Papoccia, 2A Sterling Newman Catholic Central “35 Made Easy and Adjustments” Hoosier/Hawkeye Room Hilton Garden Joe Ryan 5A, Sycamore High School “Year- Round Weight Room Program” Alumni Room Hilton Garden Darren Winkler 1A Lewistown High School “The Lewistown Iso Series/A Multiple Run/Pass Package” Illinois Room Homewood Suites 1:45-2:10 Gary Denhart, 3A Oakwood High School “No Huddle-No Sideline Triple Option” Buckeye/Wolverine Room Hilton Garden Chalk Talk and Social Hour with the Illinois Friday April 1, 2011 11:30-12:25 pm 12:40-1:50 pm Mike McDonald, 4A Effingham High School “Jet Sweep Series Out Of The Shotgun” Badger Room Hilton Garden Kevin Jackson, 5A Chicago Orr High School “How An Inexperienced Head Coach Built A Winning Program In Chicago” Illinois Room Homewood Suites 2011 Winter Edition New.qxd 1/28/11 3:01 PM Page 9 IHSFCA CLINIC SCHEDULE 2011 continued... With budget cuts, addressing the needs of our student-athletes and their parents has become increasingly more difficult. Managing expectations when it comes to coaching and recruiting has become nearly impossible. The advent of modern technology puts our parents and kids only a few clicks away from a wealth of information. But the internet has also created a growing industry we commonly refer to as “recruiting services.” Some of these services provide good information. However, the overwhelming majority are looking to capitalize on the college scholarship dreams of our parents and student-athletes. For that reason, the ICA has partnered with a recruiting education solution named FreeRecruitingWebinar.org. FreeRecruitingWebinar.org is a 501c3 nonprofit program which can greatly assist our members in educating parents on NCAA core course requirements, recruiting facts and myths, the dangers of social networking sites and much, much more. FreeRecruitingWebinar.org operates as an on-line classroom, allowing families to learn the in’s and out’s, do’s and don’ts of the entire recruiting process. With the new NCAA rules regarding online credit recovery that took effect on August 1st, it has become that much more important to make sure our families are properly educated on this subject matter. FreeRecruitingWebinar.org This solution is available at no cost to the parents and student-athletes and webinar attendee information is never rented or sold to third parties. FreeRecruitingWebinar.org will also help our families save money when it comes to purchasing athletic supplies. As a supporting sponsor, the Sports Authority provides all webinar attendees with a coupon for a substantial savings, which may be redeemed at all Sports Authority stores nationwide or on the Sports Authority website. In addition, FreeRecruitingWebinar.org will also provide ICA members with three annual in-service webinar opportunities. These webinars are designed exclusively for ICA members to “brush up” on their NCAA knowledge. We will alert you as to when these in-service webinars will be scheduled. ICA strongly encourages you to promote the FreeRecruitingWebinar.org program to your families. ICA recognizes FreeRecruitingWebinar.org as a recruiting information solution you can trust. Through our partnership with FreeRecruitingWebinar.org, every ICA member is entitled to receive marketing materials to assist you in educating your families about the program. To learn more please visit www.FreeRecruitingWebinar.org or call at 813-398-1060. 2011 Winter Edition New.qxd 1/28/11 3:02 PM Page 27 Illinois Coaches Assoc. Chillicothe Jr. High 914 W.
