create deadly enmity among collector friends, so I’ll qualify this strictly as a personal
thought. Feel free to listen to your De Lucia records at whatever speeds please your ears or

VERA DE LUZE [DE LUTSE] [s]. 1879- ? . Born in Russia, de Luce studied in Warsaw where
she made her operatic debut in 1900. She was likewise successful in Italy (usually as Vera De Luza) in both
lyric and coloratura parts and was well-received in Russia at the Zimin Opera, where she created for Moscow
Puccini’s Madama Butterfly. It appears that the remainder of her life was spent in Russia. In 1934 she was
on the faculty of a conservatory in Moscow.

MARIA DE MACCHI [s]. Near Turin, 1870-Milano, 1909. While she made her debut as a
mezzo in 1889, singing Laura in La Gioconda, de Macchi soon moved to dramatic soprano roles.
Through the 1890s she appeared throughout Europe as well as in Moscow. In the 1901-03 period
she sang at La Scala, the Teatro dal Verme and the Rome Costanzi, achieving great success in
these important houses. A contract with the Metropolian Opera for 1905-05 proved to be
unfortunate. Although she had been recommended by Caruso as well as her brother, Celestino de
Macchi (who had a voice studio in the Metropolitan Opera House), Maria was not well received by
the few New York journalists who attended her performances. Touring with the company later in
the season, however, she received high critical praise, an inference having been that a jealous diva
or two might have put out the word to New York critic friends. At any rate, de Macchi became ill
before leaving America. While she continued her career in Europe, including a 1908 Norma in
Rome, she apparently never regained her full health and died early in 1909 after an unsuccessful
operation to remove a tumor. She left only a few recordings for Fonitipia/Odeon.

heard on stage in Italy. G&T wouldn’t have recorded her unless she had been an active performer
or unless she was just beginning a career and great things were expected of her.

ALESSIO DE PAOLIS [t].
Rome, 1893-Queens, NY, 1964. He began singing as a church
chorister at the age of seven and later studied at the St. Caecilia Academy. His studies were
interrupted by the First World War, when he served in the Italian Army aboard a dirigible. Making
his debut as the Duke in Rigoletto in Bologna, 1919, De Paolis appeared throughout Italy in
principal lyric roles. He was first heard at La Scala as Fenton in Falstaff in 1921. In the 1930s he
began to specialize in character parts. From 1938 until his death he was a leading comprimario
tenor at the Metropolitan, singing fifty roles in over a thousand performances. He was on the way
to a Metropolitan performance when he lost control of the car he was driving on the Long Island
Expressway and was killed.

BERNICE [JAMES] DE PASQUALI [s]. Hull, Ma, 1873-Omaha, NE, 1925.
De Pasquali
studied in New York with Oscar Saenger and in Italy, where she met and married tenor Salvatore Mangione
De Pasquali. He retired from singing and served as a manager for his wife, dying in 1923 “at an advanced
age”. Bernice appeared in Italy and made her Met debut in 1909 as Violetta in La Traviata. Despite a lukewarm
review (in the NY Times) and a “small” audience (although another report states she received 26 curtain calls),
she remained active there through 1914, singing roles such as Lucia, Mimi, Micaela, Nedda, Gilda, and Norina
in Don Pasquale. After leaving the Met, she toured with her own company. Following the death of her husband
she worked in the Orpheum vaudeville circuit. While in Omaha, she developed double pneumonia and died
there. In 1924 it was announced that she would be creating the title role in Italy in Refice’s Cecilia.
Interestingly, a photo of De Pasquali in costume was presented with the article. Obviously her death short
circuited the plans. The next mention of the work was the actual 1934 premiere with Claudia Muzio,
information then stating (apparently incorrectly) that it had been written specifically for Muzio.

RAFAELO DIAZ [t]. San Antonio, TX, 1884-New
York City, NY, 1943. Diaz studied as a pianist in America
and then at the Stern Conservatory in Berlin. Upon discovery
of his voice, he went to Italy where he trained with Sabatini.
His American debut was with the Boston Opera in 1911 in a
small role in Massenet’s Thais. His Metropolitan Opera debut
seven years later was as Nicias, the principal tenor role in the
same opera with Geraldine Farrar. On the roster of the
Metropolitan Opera through 1934, Diaz sang roles such
as Berendey in Snegurochka, Tybalt in Romeo et Juliette, Tonio
in La Fille du Régiment, the Astrologer in Le Coq d’Or and
Léopold in La Juive, in all a total of 186 performances of 23
roles. He was a popular concert singer and frequently
appeared in society musicales. Diaz signed a “several years”
contract with Columbia in 1925. Unfortunately, the resultant
published product included only the record below and a 10”
disc of two songs. Both disappeared from the catalogue
quickly.

DONALD DICKSON [b].
Pittsburgh (Clairton), PA,
1910-Brooklyn, NY, 1972. A graduate of the Juilliard School
of Music, Dickson was a winner of the Metropolitan Opera
Auditions of the Air. He made his debut at the Met as
Valentin in Faust in 1937. His other roles there were Silvio in
Pagliacci and four parts in Damrosch’s Man Without a
Country. Dickson’s popular and financial success on the radio
led to his departure from operatic work. Concert tours
throughout the U.S. followed, although he was heard in
New York only in three Town Hall recitals: 1941, 1948 and
1954. He supposedly made unsuccessful attempts to do
tenor operatic roles in his later years.

NINA DIMITRIEFF [s].
Nothing seems to be known
about the early and late life of Mme. Dimitrieff, other than that
she was Russian by birth. During the ‘teens of the last century,
however, she was a well-known concert artist in the U.S. She
appears to have made her American debut in September, 1910, at
the Worcester Festival. She decided to remain another season, in
order to do so having turned down an operatic engagement in St.
Petersburg. She apparently remained in the U.S. for the rest of her
life. In 1911, one of her engagements was a joint concert
appearance with John McCormack in Providence, RI, in which she
sang repertoire in Russian, English and French. Her concerts in
1913 included a joint recital with cellist Vladimir Dubinsky at NY’s
Aeolian Hall. Again, her program included a variety of languages
(including the Ivanov song below). The Musical America reviewer
described her voice as “brilliant and clear” and further stated that
“the characteristics of the various songs were in each case brought
out in notable manner.” She often presented programs entirely of
Russian literature which were received with much success. The
last mentioned musical trace of her is an advertisement for a
summer course including voice training and coaching for concert
and opera which she gave with her husband, James Massell, on
Fire Island, New York. Mr. Massell was author of a 1926 book on
singing pedagogy. He died in New York in 1948 (they resided on
West 57th Street) and the copyright on his book was renewed by
Nina Dimitrieff Massell in 1953. What subsequently became of
her isn’t known.

Dragoni
studied in Golognia and made his debut in Rovere, 1911, as Silvio in Pagliacci. He sang leading roles in a
number of Italian houses. The Gramophone Company in Italy recorded him for several years beginning in
1918 as a Red Seal artist, although he never appeared at the most important theaters, such as La Scala and the
Rome Opera. His voice, however, indicates a major talent. He left Italy in 1925, emigrating to San Francisco.
There, too, he never appeared with major companies but sang leading parts with various smaller troupes. In
1943 he was Rigoletto with the Pacific Opera in San Francisco, the press announcements noting that he was
“known here for several years as a superb singer and actor”. Perhaps some of our West Coast friends can
supply further Dragoni details?

BERTHE ERZA [s]. Born in Tunis, Algiers, Erza spent a period of time in the U.S.
She made trial
(unissued) records for Victor in 1920. In 1922 she appeared in a Hippodrome concert with Titta Ruffo and also
gave a recital in New York’s Aeolian Hall. One review stated that Erza “is a singer who has overcome a
tremendous physical handicap to prove to the world that she possesses a God-given voice.” Whatever that
“tremendous handicap” might have been isn’t stated. Her only issued recording was made in Paris in 1926,
the label indicating that Erza was a soloist with the Concerts Pasdeloup. She taught voice in New York at the
Chase School of Music 1930-31, perhaps longer.

Evans was
discovered by New York showman Samuel A. (“Roxy”) Rothafel, who introduced him to Milwaukee and
Chicago. Victor Herbert brought him to New York for a leading role in his operetta, Eileen (1917). He was also
in the premiere of The Student Prince (1924) and appeared in opera with the Society of American Singers, the
Creatore and Scotti Opera Companies and the Chicago Civic Opera. He and his wife, Henrietta Wakefield,
founded the (open air) Norwalk Civic Opera Company which produced operettas from the 1930s until the
beginning of World War II. In 1951, Evans became managing director of a series of operettas at the Danbury
(CT) Fairgrounds.

NANCY EVANS [c]. Liverpool, 1915-
. A pupil of Maggie Teyte, Evans began her career
as a member of the Glyndebourne Festival Chorus in the later 1930s. Her London stage debut was in
Sullivan’s The Rose of Persia in 1938. In 1946 she alternated with Kathleen Ferrier in the English
Opera Group’s first run of Britten’s Rape of Lucretia at Glyndebourne. The following year she created
the role of Nancy in Britten’s Albert Herring in the Covent Garden world premiere. She was noted
particularly in British opera and in recitals. Her first husband was Walter Legge, who replaced her
with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf as his second wife. Harold Rosenthaur, in the New Grove Dictionary of
Opera, notes her “warm-toned voice and lively personality”.

MARIA FARNETI [s] ]. Forlì, 1877-1955. A student at the Conservatory in Pesaro, Farneti
made
her debut in Torino in 1899. That season she first sang Mascagni’s Iris, which proved to be a signature role for
her. Her particular strength was the verismo repertoire. She appeared in the U.S. in 1902 under Mascagni’s
direction and was a great success in Buenos Aires, where she created Mascagni’s Isabeau in 1911. The
principal houses of Italy, including La Scala, were the locations of many of her triumphs. She retired from the
stage in 1917 following performances of Puccini’s La Rondine at the Teatro dal Verme, but made a group of
celebrated electrical recordings in 1931.

Torino, 1878-Desio, 1944. Her debut was
in 1896 as Oscar in Un Ballo in Maschera. For the
EDOARDO FERRARI-FONTANA and his second wife
next thirty years she appeared throughout Italy, as
well as in Turkey, Egypt, Spain and Russia, singing mostly the standard coloratura roles: Gilda, Lucia, Juliette,
Violetta and Elvira in I Puritani. In later years she taught, one of her pupils having been coloratura Anna
Maria Guglielmetti. Shortly before her death, a nephew had been deported to a concentration camp. She
thereupon had a stroke which left her mute and paralyzed and shortly after that she was mortally wounded
by an aerial bombardment of her residence.

Born as Wladyslaw Floryan Kohmann, Floriansky began his career in Lvóv as an operetta singer. In the later
1880s he turned to opera and quickly became established as a leading tenor in Prague, Warsaw, Vienna,
Berlin, Hamburg and St. Petersburg, among other cities. In 1889 he sang Lenski in the Prague premieres of
Tschaikowsky’s Eugen Onegin and Hermann in the same composer’s Pique Dame (1893). His other roles
included principal tenor parts in operas of Dvorák, Fibich and Smetana, as well as such Italian works as Aida,
Otello and Cavalleria Rusticana. Later in his career (1906-07) he made a concert tour of the U.S. His records are
very rare and important.

BETTINA FREEMAN [ms].
Freeman began her operatic career with the Boston Opera in
1910 at the age of twenty, singing leading mezzo roles. She restudied as a soprano and appeared
subsequently in parts such as Aida, Tosca, Santuzza, Isolde, and so on. In this repertoire she
was heard at Ravinia in Chicago, with the Beecham Opera Company, the U.S. San Carlo touring
company and in Cuba and South America. In 1925 she sang in Italy at the San Remo Casino
as Giordano’s Fedora. Her career seemed to run until at least 1930, but what became of her
subsequently is unknown. All her records save one were made as a mezzo-soprano during her first
season with the Boston Opera.

1895-1978. The first internationally successful
Philippine opera singer, Fuentes studied first in Manila
with Salvina Fornari. Early on Fuentes taught voice, but
then went to Italy for further training. She made her
operatic debut there early in 1925 as Cio-Cio-San in
Madama Butterfly. In addition to Liù in Turandot,
Mascagni’s Iris and Mimì in La Bohème, she was specially
recommended by Richard Strauss for performances of his
Salome in 1932. In addition to Italy and Germany, she was
heard with success in Holland, England, France and in the
U.S. with the San Carlo Opera. Fuentes was less than five
feet tall but had a large and resonant voice. After her final
recital in Manila, 1945, she devoted her remaining years to
teaching and was a major force in fostering musical growth
in the Philippines.

ALFREDO GANDOLFI [b]. Turin, 1885-New
York City, 1963. Gandolfi’s debut was in his home town of
Turin, 1911, as Enrico in Lucia. In 1914 he was Amfortas in the
Italian Premiere of Parsifal. In 1932 he sang Scarpia in Tosca
with Muzio and Borgioli at the opening of the San Francisco
War Memoral Opera House and remained with that company
for four years. From 1929-1936 he was on the roster of the
Metropolitan Opera and he was also with the Chicago Opera
for a period. Gandolfi made only two commercial recordings:
one acoustic for the Gramophone Company and the very rare
electrical item below.

A student of Alberto Selva and
Vittorio Orefice in Milano, Garbin made his debut in Vienna, 1891, as Don Alvaro in Verdi’s La Forza del
Destino. The following year he appeared in Genua in the world premiere of Franchetti’s Cristoforo Columbo.
1893) to the Nanetta of Adelina Stehle, whom he later married. Other creations included Milio in Leoncavallo’s Zaza (Milan Teatro Lirico, 1900) and the title role in Montemezzi’s Giovanni Gallureuse (Turin, 1905). His
career included the major Italian houses, the Teatro Colòn in Buenos Aires, Covent Garden, the OpéraComique and leading theaters in Poland and Russia.

[EMMA] LUCY GATES [s]. St. George, UT, 1882-Salt Lake City, UT, 1951. A granddaughter of
Brigham Young, Gates’ first musical studies were on the ukulele and Hawaiian guitar, she having
resided with her family in Hawaii from the age of 5 to 9. She then returned to Utah (her parents
having resettled in Salt Lake City) and studied violin and painting. At the age of 12 piano lessons
began. Her musical talent convinced her family to send her to Germany in 1898 to study piano with Heinrich
Barth. The following year she began vocal studies with Blanche Corelli. Returning to the U.S. in 1901, she
studied voice and opera in New York and concertized in Utah to earn money for further training. In 1907 she
returned to Germany to continue studies with Mme. Corelli, and two years later she made her operatic debut
in the Berlin Royal Opera as Ännchen in Der Freischütz under Karl Muck. She remained in Berlin until 1911
singing principal coloratura roles and the occasional secondary parts. She was then engaged for the Kassel
(Germany) Royal Opera, singing there in total 45 roles, including Sophie in their first performance of Strauss’s
Der Rosenkavalier. During her first three weeks she was heard as Woglinde in Rheingold, Oscar in Un Ballo in
Maschera, Constanza in The Abduction from the Seraglio and the Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute, as well as
a French operetta, Petites Michus. The First World War cut short her European career. Both the Chicago Opera
and the Met were interested in her. Chicago won out, but she soon discovered that their opera season was
cancelled and that the Met by that time was fully booked with sopranos returning from Germany. As a result,

she concentrated on concert singing and in 1915 made her New York recital debut and then toured the U.S.
She was a member of The Society of American Singers and appeared with them in the American premiere of
Mozart’s The Impresario, as well as Pergolesi’s La Serva Padrona. She was heard frequently as a soloist with the
major U.S. choral societies as well as the Philadelphia Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic and the
Cincinnati Symphony. She retired from stage performances in 1934 when her husband, Albert E. Bowen, was
elevated in the hierarchy of the Mormon Church (Church of the Latter-Day Saints). She then taught, her final
public performance having been in 1948 at a testimonial in her honor.

was originally coloratura but in the 1930s she branched out into more lyric parts, such as Mimì, Butterfly, and
Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier. What became of her doesn’t seem to be known.

JEANNE GERVILLE-RÉACHE [c] Orthez, 1882-NY City, 1915. A pupil of Rosine Laborde,
Gerville-Réache also coached with Pauline Viardot, who prepared her for her 1899 Opéra-Comique debut as
Gluck’s Orpheus. Three years later, at the age of twenty, she created the mother, Geneviève, in the Paris
Opèra-Comique world premiere of Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande. 1907 marked her American debut with
Hammerstein’s Manhattan Opera. She subsequently appeared in Chicago and Canada as well. Wagnerian
roles were part of her repertoire and she also was Clytemnestra in the 1910 American premiere of Strauss’s
Elektra. As with Schumann-Heink, the Clytemnestra of the Dresden world premiere, Gerville-Réache almost
immediately retired the role, considering it too wearing vocally. Her tragic death at the age of 32 was the
result of blood poisoning.

MARIO GILION [t]. 1870-Marseilles, 1914.
After some experience as a baritone, Gilion made
his tenor debut in Monza, 1901, as Vasco da
Gama in Meyerbeer’s Africaine. He quickly took
on other heroic parts, such as Raoul in Les Huguenots and Arnold in Rossini’s William Tell. Through
the decade he had great success throughout Italy,
in South America, and in France. His records are
in deserved collector demand.

Glanville was with the Metropolitan Opera from 1904-1908. Her major
role there was the Dew Fairy in Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel, a part she created in the Met’s first
performance of the opera in 1905. She repeated the role twelve times. She was also a Flowermaiden in Parsifal
and a Youth in the first Met performance of Puccini’s Manon Lescaut in 1907. It is possible that she also studied
or sang in Germany. One Roberta Glanville, age 25, returned on the steamship Bremen from Germany on
September 25 th, 1907, possibly from summer studies or performances. She reappears in the press in 1915,
singing duet programs in New York with Odessa-born baritone, George Castelle. In 1928, she was heard in
Baltimore on radio station WBAL with the WBAL String Quartet in music with American Indian themes by
Victor Herbert (aria from Natoma), Cadman, and others. Perhaps
she was living in Baltimore at the time? Glanville made a few
records for the American Zonophone company around 1908.

Billed in vaudeville as “Ireland’s Sweetest Tenor”, Griffin toured the world
in the 1920s singing Irish ballads. He retired to Claremont, NY, around the 2nd World War and opened The
Claremont Inn. Beginning sometime in the 1940s he conducted a weekly radio program, “Old Times and Old
Timers” over a local Hudson, NY, radio station on which he played records (including his own) of various
singers of earlier decades. At one point, he described having recorded for electrical Zonophone while
clinging on a ladder about twenty-five feet up in the middle of a large auditorium to get the right acoustical
ambiance. I met Mr. Griffin in person once in 1953, then a short, rotund chap smoking a big cigar. It appeared
that his ladder-climbing days were then likely over.

1890, appearing throughout Italy
(including La Scala) and South America.
She began singing dramatic soprano roles
in 1900, her repertoire including
Brünnhilde in Die Walküre, Leonora in
Forza del Destino and Santuzza, among
many other parts. Giudice taught after
her retirement from the stage. From 1935

WILLIAM GUSTAFSON [bs].
Arlington, MA, 1888-New York
City,1931. Born of Swedish émigré
parents, Gustafson first appeared as a
singer in concert in Boston, 1915. After
serving in the eleventh Infantry during
World War One, he resumed his career
and in 1920 made his Metropolitan Opera
debut as Titurel in Parsifal. For the next
eleven years he was heard at the Met in
Wagnerian roles such as the Landgrave in
Tannhäuser, Hunding and King Mark, as
well as parts in operas in Italian, French
and English. He was also an oratorio
soloist at various festivals. Gustafson was
described as over six feet tall and athletic
looking. His tragic ending was suicide.
His wife, in a fit of jealousy over a telephone call he had just received, was
arranging train reservations to return with
her two children to her parents in Boston.
While this was going on, Mr. Gustafson
fired a bullet through his head. His three
issued records, recorded prior to his Met
debut, are rare.

NOBUKO HARA [s]. Tokyo, 18921979. A major Japanese soprano, Hara was
graduated from the Imperial Conservatory of
Japan, being among the first Japanese artists
to establish a career in Western music. As with
other such singers, prejudices of the time
limited her to “Japanese” roles outside of
Japan, such as Puccini’s Madama Butterfly
and Mascagni’s Iris. Her New York debut in
1920 was as Cio-Cio-San, with Gallo’s San
Carlo Opera company at the Manhattan Opera
House. The NY Times unnamed reviewer
mentions that hundreds of persons were left
outside the big theater for lack of space
within. She was “received with an ovation
that was repeated at many curtain calls.” Her
poise and “slender grace” were noted, the
voice described as “plaintive, immature, but
with beautiful high notes”. The following
month she appeared at Aeolian Hall with Met
tenor Rafael Diaz and others in a concert to
raise funds for Italian soldiers wounded
during the First World War. Hara made her
European debut in 1925 and in 1928 sang at La
Scala in the premiere of the opera Thien-Hoa
by Bianchini. She sang with the Monte Carlo
opera in 1930. Subsequently most of her career
was in Japan. She taught there, specializing

made a test record for Victor in 1920 and two
electrical commercial recordings (four sides) for Fonotipia in

she was on the Met roster, singing the Priestess in Aida, as

L’Oiseau Bleu. Her career continued until at least 1940. Aside
from the single item below, her only issued records were for
Operaphone [vertically cut, reissued on other labels, such
as “All-Star”], and in 1929 for Edison.

as a singer, pianist, conductor and composer, Henschel made his debut as a pianist in 1862. In Munich, 1868,
he appeared in Der Meistersinger as Hans Sachs. 1881 marked the beginning of his tenure as conductor of the
Boston Symphony Orchestra. As a composer, he left an opera (Nubia, premiered in Dresden, 1899) and various
instrumental, choral and solo vocal works. In 1928-29 he visited the British Columbia recording studios and
made a group of song recordings which he also accompanied.

Cologne. Choosing an anagram of “America” for her professional name, she made her debut in Stuttgart,
1910, as Elisabeth in Tannhäuser. In 1913 she appeared as a guest at Covent Garden, singing the Marschallin in
Der Rosenkavalier. In 1915 she made her debut in Stuttgart, her performances there including the title role of
the premiere of Max von Schillings’ Mona Lisa, also introducing this opera to Amsterdam the following
season. From 1917 she was with the Vienna Staatsoper and 1920 to 1926 with the Karlsruhe Opera. She
subsequently taught there. Her records, all for Odeon, are very rare.

Near Budapest, 1889-Honolulu, 1976. A graduate of the Budapest Musical
Academy, Javor made her debut at the Budapest Opera in 1913 as Gilda in Rigoletto. The next year she
married tenor Alexander Varnay (1889-1924). Their daughter, Astrid Varnay (1918-2006), taught first by her
mother, became an internationally celebrated soprano. The family lived for a period in South America and
then New York, where her husband died. Two years later she married tenor Fortunato de Angelis. Both Javor
and De Angelis sang with smaller companies in the New York area and in 1937 were joined by daughter
Astrid in operatic performances at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. By this time Javor was singing more
dramatic repertoire, such as Leonora in Il Trovatore.

IRENE JESSNER [s].
Vienna, 1901-Toronto, 1994. A piano student at the Vienna Conservatory,
she subsequently studied voice and made her debut in Teplice, 1930, as Elsa in Lohengrin. She toured
Europe for the next several years, making her U.S. debut in 1936 at the Met in Hansel und Gretel. She appeared
with the NYC Opera as well, singing in both houses the Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier. At the Met she
appeared in twenty roles, including Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni, Desdemona, Sieglinde, Tosca, and Eva in
Der Meistersinger. In 1952 Jessner joined the University of Toronto music faculty and remained there as a
teacher for 34 years. One of her most noted pupils was Teresa Stratas.

Born Theodore Allen Jones, the son of a coal
miner, Allan attended NY Univerisity and studied voice there with Claude Warford. He also apparently
studied for a period with Felix Leroux in Paris and Sir Henry Wood in London. He was active in church work
in New York City and in concert appearances in the New York and Philadelphia areas from about 1928 and
was a guest in 1929 with the Deauville Opera in France. He also appeared on the radio, local opera companies
and in Broadway productions. Jones was brought to Hollywood by MGM in 1935 supposedly as a backup for
Nelson Eddy. He appeared successfully in several films through the mid-1940s but continued his career on the
radio, as a nightclub singer and in musicals. From the point of his entry into Hollywood, his career as a
classical musician, much like that of Nelson Eddy, ended. One of his two sons is singer Jack Jones.

HELENE JUNG [c].
Weimar, 1887-Wurttemberg, 1975. A student of Karl Scheidemantel in
Dresden, Jung made her debut in Weimar in 1907. After several seasons there, she became a member of the
Hamburg opera, 1914-20, and then the Dresden Staatsoper until 1941. She appeared at a guest at Covent
Garden as well as in various festivals and opera houses in Germany and Austria. Particularly connected with
the music of Richard Strauss, Jung was in the premieres of his operas Die ägyptische Helena (1928), Die
schweigsame Frau (1934) and Daphne (1938). In later years she taught at the Franz Liszt College of Music in
Weimar.

His debut was in Cologne, 1911, as
Cavaradossi although a second source gives the role as Turiddu. Appearing for seasons in Krefeld,
Wuppertal and Dusseldorf, he appeared at the Vienna Staatsoper in 1927 as Parsifal and was frequently
heard there through 1942. As late as 1949 he sang Tristan at the Vienna Volksoper. His huge repertoire (120
roles) included a variety of parts from Tamino in The Magic Flute through the Drum Major in Wozzeck.

Born of
Lithuanian parents, Kaskas was a 1931 graduate of the Hartford Conservatory of Music. She
received a two-year grant from the Lithuanian government to study and perform in Rome, Milan,
Genoa and Nice. Entering the first Metropolitan Opera “Auditions of the Air” in 1936, Kaskas was
one of two first-prize winners, given Met performances. Her success was such that she was invited
back annually until retiring from opera in 1950. In addition, she was frequently heard in concert
and performances with major orchestras and at choral festivals. She taught at several Universities
including Indiana and Florida State, concluding with Eastman where she was on the voice faculty
from 1959 to 1974.

AGNES KIMBALL [s]. Princeton, IL, 1881-Toledo, OH,
1918. Kimball (born Agnes Grace Grigsby) married Charles Farrow
Kimball, an office clerk with the Carnegie Steel Corporation. Sources
indicate that she was either 17 or 18 at the date of their marriage in 1901,
although if her birth date above is correct, then she would have been 20.
A daughter, Eloise, was born the next year. Mrs. Kimball subsequently
decided to pursue a musical career with the blessings of her husband,
who said he “worked unceasingly to help his wife get a musical
education”. She studied with Franz Bellinger, gaining a position as a
church singer in Pittsburgh. As was reported in the New York Times,
“When [Mr. Kimball’s] years of self-denial were rewarded by the success
of his wife, she ceased to care for him”. She then decided to go it on her
own, leaving Mr. Kimball in Pittsburgh and daughter Eloise with a sister
in Indianapolis while she moved to New York City, there becoming
soloist with three important religious organizations. She was also a
featured soprano on tour with Victor Herbert’s Orchestra and a
recording artist for Victor, Columbia, Edison, Rex and Indestructible,
as well as a noted oratorio artist. Mr. Kimball secured an uncontested
divorce from Agnes in 1913. Her career continued another year and she
then married a wealthy businessman from Toledo, Edward T. Affleck,

Jr. At that point she appeared to have had enough of performing and
shortly after she disappeared from the stage. Unfortunately, her new
found bliss lasted only a short period.
She became ill during Christmas week of 1917 (possibly a flu victim) and died the following January 5th.

A noted
Mexican tenor active in Spain, South America
and Italy. He also appeared in the U.S. with
the NYC Opera (making his debut as Alfredo in
1945) and with the Philadelphia Opera in
1946, as well as with Fortune Gallo’s touring
San Carlo where he sang, among other roles,
Rhadames and Manrico. Lagares’ physical
appearance was somewhat reminiscent of
Caruso and his dark vocal timbre was also
akin to that of his eminent predecessor in his
later years.

FORREST LAMONT [t]. Athelstan,
Ontario, 1881-Chicago, 1937. Lamont
moved to Chicopee Falls, MA, as a youth
where he sang in a church choir. He studied
in Italy and made his debut at the Teatro
Adriano, 1910, in Donizetti’s Poliuto. In 1917

he made his debut with the Chicago Opera as
Xalca in Azora in Henry Hadley’s Daughter of Montezuma, “a sort of junior American Aida”, as a
reviewer described it. In addition to creating leading roles in several other American operas in
Chicago, Lamont was also heard as a Wagnerian tenor and in Italian parts such as Canio,
Rhadames and Manrico. One of his great successes was Gennaro in Wolf-Ferrari’s I Gioielli della
Madonna, his castmates having been Rosa Raisa and Giacomo Rimini. He retired in 1932 and then
taught in Chicago. A character tenor who had sung with Lamont in Chicago told me that Lamont
would prefer playing cards with the stagehands during lulls in his opera performances to
socializing with his colleagues. Lamont recorded for Emerson as “Frank Woods” and Okeh as
“Carroll Shannon,” “George Lambert” and a group of operatic records under his own name.

Landi studied in Florence with
Vito Frazzi and made his debut in 1925 as the Duke in Rigoletto. For the next decade he appeared in a number
of Italian houses. His La Scala debut was in 1936 as Fenton in Falstaff. For several seasons between 1937 and
1951, Landi appeared at the Metropolitan during various seasons from 1937 to 1951. He chose to remain in the
U.S. during the War years, in addition to the Met, appearing in South America at the Teatro Colón and at the

San Francisco opera. His repertoire was relatively small and was limited to mostly light lyric parts. In 1945 he
married soprano Hilde Reggiani.

HULDA LASHANSKA [s]. 1892-1974.
While her obituary mentions that her debut was in
Aeolian Hall in 1918, she appeared with the
NY Symphony as early as 1910 and in
concerts in New York around the same time,
sometimes as “Lashans” rather than
Lashanska. She studied with Frida Ashforth
and Marcella Sembrich, to whose voice,
Lashanska’s was likened, along with that of
Alma Gluck, in several reviews. After the
death of her husband, Harold A. Rosenbaum in 1926, whom she wed in 1913, her
performances seemed to be almost
exclusively for charity until her retirement
around 1940. One of her two daughters,
Peggy, was married to a son of N.Y.’s
Governor Herbert Lehman in 1938. In 1944
he was killed as a fighter plane pilot and
Mrs. Lehman subsequently wed conductor
Richard K. Korn.

childhood, he decided to pursue a career as a singer after having received a degree of doctor of law from the
University of Bologna. His debut was in Pistoia, 1907, as the Duke in Rigoletto, followed by other principal
roles in various Italian houses. He first appeared in London at a Chappell Ballad Concert in 1909. He made his
Covent Garden operatic debut as Don José in Carmen, 1912, also appearing there as Canio in Pagliacci. Much of
his activity in England was on the concert stage. He toured Australia in 1924 as a member of the “CelliniZacharewitsch-Cimara” Concert Company, Zacharewitsch
having been a noted Russian cellist and Pietro Cimara a pianist,
accompanist and composer.

From 1882 to 1912 he was a leading buffo tenor of the Berlin Imperial Opera, Mime in the Ring Cycle being
among his most prominent roles. He later appeared with the Berlin City Opera, singing Mime there as late as
1933. Despite being Jewish, he remained in Germany until his death, apparently without major persecution.
His pupils included Mafalda Salvatini, Peter Cornelius and Albert Reiss.

AROLDO LINDI [t]. Tuna, Sweden, 1888-1944. Born Harald Lindau, Harald left school at the
age of twelve and then worked for two years as a coal miner. He and his younger brother then sailed for the
U.S. and jumped ship in Boston. He worked as a piano mover and hoped to pursue a career as a boxer.
However, an interest in singing developed and at the age of seventeen he became a singer in Boston’s Swedish
Svetoid Society. He was then a baritone. A move to New York resulted in work at the Met as a super in Aida,
then as a chorister and cover in summer stock. Further experiences included a period as a singing waiter. His
voice moved to tenor and he appeared in a concert at Hunter College singing “Vesti la giubba”. This led to
further vocal studies and in 1916 a debut as Rhadames in a 1916 performance of Aida by the Fleck Opera
Company, with whom he toured Northeast U.S. for several years. He went to Italy in 1922 for further study
and made his debut in Asti in La Forza del Destino. Here his professional name was christened Aroldo Lindi
which he used from then on. He was next to become an important member of the Chicago Opera and a guest
at Covent Garden and in Germany as well as in Italy. He returned to the U.S. in 1932 and made this his home
from then on, singing with the Hippodrome Opera, the Chicago Opera, and Gallo’s touring San Carlo Opera.
He died onstage during Pagliacci while singing the first aria of his career, “Vesti la giubba”.
