MARIA PIA PAGLIARINI [s]. Modina, 1902-1935.
A pupil of Vezzani and Boninsegna,
Pagliarini made her debut in 1921 as Nedda in Pagliacci and retired in 1930 after marrying
conductor Antonio Fugazzola. Her final performance seems to have been Leonora in Il Trovatore at
Milan’s Teatro dal Verme. See: ALESSANDRO BONCI.
ESTHER PALLISER (or PALLISSER)
[s]. Germantown, PA, 1872 - ? , She was taught
by her musician parents and then studied further
in Europe. Her operatic debut was in Rouen as
Marguerite in Faust. This was followed by work
with the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company in 1890.
Her career included other Gilbert and Sullivan
performances and tours, concerts, music festivals
and grand opera at Covent Garden and Drury
Lane. An appearance at the July, 1916 San Diego
Panama-California Exposition indicates that she
was active at least through this period, but as to
her subsequent career and life nothing seems to
be known.
1118. 10” Blk. London G&T 3288 [2100-R].
SPRING (Henschel). Such limpid,
effortless singing! Label is quite faded.
Surface very bright, possibly waxed
along the way? Harmless inherent
surface pressing waves. There are
some LGTs which sound (albeit
scarcely visible), but with these in mind
and the label faded, it otherwise looks
2 or better. $50.00.

SALVATORE PAPACCIO [t]. Naples, 1890 – Naples, 1977.
One source gives his debut
in 1908 at the Teatro San
Carlo as the Sailor in
Tristan
und
Isolde,
a
performance directed by
Cleofante Campanini. If his
debut and birthdate are
correct, this would have
made him 18 at the time.
His
repertoire,
mostly
comprimario roles, included
well over 100 parts. Most of
his operatic career was at
the Teatro San Carlo, from
which he retired in 1963.
He was also a famous
interpreter
of
Canzone
Napoletana, and he made
many records in this genre.

CONCETTO PATERNA [bs]. Catania, 1870 – 1940?.
His debut seems to have been in
1890. Aside from appearing with many Italian companies, Paterna was also heard in Lisbon
(1890), the Metropolitan Opera (season of 1908-09), Covent Garden (1920), and Madrid’s Teatro
Reale (1915). Paterna was one of his era’s most prominent buffo basses, and at the Met his roles
included Bartolo in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Dulcamara in l’Elisir d’Amore, Don Pasquale, and several
smaller parts. His lengthy career concluded in 1938 but included only five recorded sides (for

DAVID POLERI [t]. Philadelphia, 1921-Hawaii, 1967. A student of Alberto Sciaretti, Poleri
made his debut in Chicago, 1949, with the San Carlo Opera as Gounod’s Faust and 1951 with the
NYC Opera as Alfredo in La Traviata. In 1954 he created the leading tenor role of Michele in
Menotti’s The Saint of Bleeker Street in New York (in English) and the following year at La Scala (in
Italian) and, in addition, appeared at Glyndbourne, Edinburgh, the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino
and various other operatic festival sites. His death occurred during a sightseeing helicopter crash
in Hawaii. He evidently had quite a temper, as in singing in Carmen with Gloria Lane at the
Chicago Lyric Opera, he “stalked off the stage in the final act, snarling ‘Finish it yourself!’ at the
conductor (with whom he had had a tiff)”. Miss Lane thereupon sang both his part and hers and
ended up committing suicide by stabbing herself with her thumb instead of a knife. His son, also
David, is an active operatic tenor today and has appeared at the Met and many other venues.

Warsaw, 1881-St.-Sauveur-des-Monts,
Canada, 1968. Her operatic debut seems to have been with the Boston Opera in 1910 as
Frasquita in Carmen, a role she repeated with the company a number of times in Boston and on a
national tour. She subsequently appeared in principal parts with the opera companies in Lviv and
Krakow and then at the Vienna Volksoper. In her native Poland, she was a star at the Warsaw
Opera where, from 1924-1931, she was featured in leading roles in such operas as Aida and

in 1936 as Elisa Gatti-Porcinai. Her career was in the Italian provincial theaters in leading
soprano roles of operas such as L’Amico Fritz, Andrea Chenier, Mefistofele, La Bohème and Il

Despite this, he continued as a teacher, one of his major pupils having been tenor Pedro Mirassou.
GIUSEPPE RADAELLI [t]. Bergamo,

One source
indicates that Radaelli made his debut as
Enzo in La Gioconda, 1914, at the Teatro
Lauro Rossi in Macerata. Another states he
was first heard in Sicily. After singing in the
Italian provinces, he made his debut at the
Rome Teatro Costanzi in 1919 as Don Jose,
appearing there again in 1923. An obituary
and an internet site both mention his work
at La Scala in 1923 but his name doesn’t
appear in the La Scala Cronologia. He likely
sang in South America in the 1930s.
Radaelli’s final appearances were with the
Salmaggi Opera in New York in Aida and
Pagliacci in 1938, and he had previously
been connected with Salmaggi performances
in New York as early as 1924.

EFIMOVA RADINA-FIGNER [s]. Russia, 1872-Vienna, 1944.
The second
wife of tenor Nicolai Figner (following his divorce from Medea Mei-Figner in 1904), Radina-Figner
was a gifted lyric soprano. She made her debut in 1893 and appeared in opera in a number of
Russian houses and in Germany and Austria as well. As seems to have been the wont of many
artists of the period, she sang a wide variety of roles, including Euridice, Aida, and Santuzza, and
of course a number of Russian roles, such as Lisa in Pique Dame (which the first Mrs. Figner had
created). Radina left the opera stage in 1905, likely to wed Nikolai that year and to give birth to a
daughter, born in 1906. She subsequently appears to have sung only on occasion in concert and
also to have made a few rare recordings for The Gramophone Company/Zonophone.

RIDER-KELSEY [s]. Leroy, NY, 1877Toledo, OH. 1947. Mme. Rider-Kelsey (after 1927 Mme. Rider-
Reed) was a leading concert and oratorio soprano. She made an
operatic debut at Covent Garden in 1908 as Micaëla in Carmen
(with Maria Gay). She received successful reviews, but,
according to her second husband, she “hated the artificiality of
it, the make-up, the idea of climbing a ladder to make an
entrance down a hill…” After three performances she returned
to the U.S. and completely abandoned any further thoughts of
opera. Her career continued into the 1930s, after which she
taught. She made one exceedingly rare record for Victor in 1910
and beginning in 1915 recorded exclusively for Columbia for
slightly over a decade.

ARCHANGELO ROSSI [bs]. Ferentino, 1857-Milano, 1907.
A very humorous (at least I
find him so) buffo. He was successful in Italy, including La Scala, preceding his Met debut in La
Boheme, 1903, as both Benoit and Alcindoro. His other roles during his Met tenure included Don
Pasquale, Dr. Dulcamara, Masetto and the Sacristan in Tosca. He had been in San Francisco
touring with the Metropolitan Opera during the disastrous earthquake of 1906, and it left him in a
state of increasing “emotional distress”. On Feb. 16, 1907, he participated in Don Pasquale, which
turned out to be one of the strangest presentations in Met history. The first scene of act one was
completely omitted. Rossi appeared in the second act but sang it entirely seated in a chair. It was
announced that he was indisposed and that the remainder of the opera would be sung without a
Don Pasquale. The act turned out to be tenor, Andreas Dippel, singing “Com’è gentil” and then
soprano Marcella Sembrich rendering Arditi’s “Parla” which, of course, had nothing to do with Don
Pasquale. Shortly after, Rossi or the management cancelled the rest of his season. He returned to
Italy and in June of 1907 committed suicide “in a moment of desperation”. –Information from Jim

SCHWARZ [s]. Agram, Croatia,
1888-Vienna, 1964. Her debut was at the
Theater an der Wien in 1908. She subsequently
appeared in many of Austria and Germany’s
major houses. She was at home in both opera and
operetta. One of her most famous stage co-stars
was tenor Richard Tauber, with whom she first
partnered in Carmen in 1921 and finally at the
Vienna Staatsoper in 1938 in a work they had
created in 1929, Lehár’s Land des Lächelns.
Marguerite Slezak, one of her pupils, recounted in
her autobiography that Schwarz lived with her
mother (in the later 1920s), “a delicate yet
unbelievably energetic lady. Mama Schwarz
missed no performance of her daughter. She sat
in the middle of the parquet and influenced the
audience's applause particularly loudly. While
doing so she would turn left and right claiming
loudly: "Charming, magnificent! Who is this Godgifted singer?". One time an acquaintance sat
behind, unseen by her. [Following Mama’s
outbursts] he bent forward and said, for everyone
to overhear: "But, gnädige Frau, surely you would
know that!" Schwarz left Austria in 1938 for
England and then the U.S. Here she sang with
the Chicago Opera, gave recitals and also taught,
her pupils having included Risë Stevens and
Marni Nixon. In 1948 she returned to Vienna,
where she taught and gave master classes at the
Salzburg Mozarteum. –Wikipedia.

FRANCESCA SOLARI
CRISTINA SORO [s]. Concepcion, Chile, 1890 - ? .
Born Cristina Soro Barriga de Baltra,
Soro began vocal studies with Italian teachers who had settled in Chile. Her debut was at the age
of 15 at the Santiago Teatro Municipal, singing compositions of her brother, Enrique Soro Barriga.
It was Barriga who accompanied Soro in her first group of Red Seal Victor Records, these recorded
in Santiago in 1917 on portable equipment by a Victor talent scout then visiting Central and
South America. This was a year after she had graduated with highest honors from the Santiago
Con-servatory of Music, receiving a degree of Professor of Music. On the success of her trial
recordings (which were her first issued Victor Red Seals), Victor wanted her to come to Camden to
record with orchestra, but she had entered in a course of study at the Verdi Conservatory in
Milano and wasn’t available until 1922, when she made (with orchestra) her second and final
group of records. A con-cert tour of Mexico with pianist/composer Manuel Ponce followed this.
Apparently Soro didn’t ap-pear in opera, her career having been as a recitalist and teacher. She
was active in the latter capacity in 1949 when she was interviewed for Hobbies magazine by
William R. Moran (and from which ar-ticle this information is taken).

LAWRENCE STRAUSS [t]. Portland, OR, 1882 - ? .
Strauss, who settled in California
early in his career, spent a period of years studying in Europe with Jules Algier, Jean De Reszke
and Yvette Guilbert (France), Fritz Lindemann (Berlin) Sir George Henschel, Raymond von zur
Mühlen and Watkin Mills (England). Active primarily on the U.S. West Coast, it wasn’t until 1929
that he made his East Coast debut in recital, first in Boston and then New York, to exceptionally
complimentary criticism. He also appeared throughout the country in oratorio and recital, his
particular enthusiasms having been French and German songs, as well as contemporary music. In
addition to a small group of discs apparently made later in his career for a San Francisco
company, Photo & Sound (example below), he made two private recordings for Victor in 1927
(which I’ve never seen) along with a test for Victor five years earlier.

ALESSANDRO VALENTE [t]. Torino, 1890-1958.
The “mysterious” life of Valente was
researched in an invaluable Record Collector Magazine article, Vol. XXXIV, No. 1, by noted collector
Alan Bilgora. Valente sang as a youth in a church choir and as a teenager in an opera chorus, but
following in his father’s tracks, he pursued a career as an engraver and an engineer, achieving
notable accomplishments in these areas. Other than his celebrated records, however, he had
considerably less success professionally as a singer. His first record was made in 1914 under his
vaudeville name, Alex Vallo. Carlo Sabajno conducted the session and requested a kickback on the
tenor’s recording fee, to which Valente wouldn’t agree. Various other intrigues and conspiracies
apparently affected what should have been a tremendously successful career, judging from his
recordings made from the 1927 to 1931 period. His most successful stage work seemed to have
been as an assisting artist for Luisa Tetrazzini on her farewell tour in 1934 and in 1927 in a run of
Andrea Chenier performances at the Rome Teatro Adriano.

Countess ITALIA [MOLINA] VASQUEZ [s].
Trieste, 1869-Budapest, 1945. Born of Italian
parents, Vasquez studied in Geneva, first piano and
then voice with Alfonso Dami. She was discovered in
1889 by Gustav Mahler, then directing the Hungarian
Opera, and was prepared by Mahler for her debut:
Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni. Despite being twenty and
inexperienced, however, she refused to go on at the last
minute as she was denied a new costume. She still was
to develop into one of the “preeminent members of the
permanent ensemble” of the Budapest Opera. In 1893
she was Hungary’s first Nedda in that country’s
premiere performance of Pagliacci. She created Isolde in
the Hungarian premiere of Tristan und Isolde in 1901.
Vasquez was a guest in several European opera houses,
including having sung Aida in 1902 at the Vienna
Opera. She remained a leading member of the Budapest
Opera until 1917 and subsequently taught. The title
“Countess” was the result of her marriage to a
Hungarian country squire. She appears to have recorded
only in 1902.

Manon, as well as a number of smaller roles in familiar

LOUISE B. VOIGT [s].
Voigt, an American, had a series of “concert triumphs” in Berlin and
had been offered “a most advantageous” contract from the Berlin Royal Opera, as well as by
Conried for the Metropolitan in the early 1900s. She chose not to accept these offers because of
the death of her hustand, after which she retired for a period. In resuming her career, primarily in
the U.S. midwest, it was as an oratorio soloist and as a guest with the larger German-American
Sängerfests. At one such event it was noted
that her voice carried “to absolute perfection
… over a chorus of 5000 in fortissimo”[!]. In
1913, Voigt was a guest soloist at a special
fund raising concert at the Armory on 25th St.
and Lexington Avenue in New York where
“twelve to fourteen thousand people” heard
her sing “Dich teure Halle” with Victor
Herbert conducting an orchestra comprised of

she was warmly applauded”. Her only records

HENRIETTA
WAKEFIELD [c]. New York, 1878-Norwalk, CT, 1974.
Wakefield’s long
Metropolitan Opera career included twenty seasons between 1907 and 1935 in which she sang 69
roles. These ranged from Suzuki in Madama Butterfly, La Cieca in La Gioconda and Madelon in
Andrea Chenier through the roles of Gerhilde, Grimgerde, Schwertleite and Waltraute in Wagner’s
Die Walküre (not all the same evening!). She also appeared in musicals and operetta (de Koven’s
Rob Roy in 1912 was a particular success) as well as in oratorio and in recitals. She and her
husband (baritone Greek Evans) founded The Theater in The Woods at their Norwalk estate in the
1930s, a successful outdoor summer musical venue.

PRINCESS WATAHWASO [ms].
Indian Island,
ME, 1882 - 1969.
Described as a “full-blooded
[Maine] Penobscot Indian mezzo-soprano” in publicity
material, Watahwaso was active in the late ‘teens and
1920s in concerts of songs of the American Indians or
arranged versions by various composers. She would
occasionally add groups of other concert repertoire,
such as at her Aeolian Hall (NYC) debut in 1920, which
included
“Voce di Donna”
from Ponchielli’s La
Gioconda and Bemberg’s Chant Indou. In later years she
was a political activist for American Indian causes. She
and her second husband, Chief Poolaw, performed in
local venues and in 1947 had a 24 foot teepee built next
to their home as a gift store and tourist attraction,
which they operated until her death. – Internet sources

Her debut was at the Danish Royal

recalled as one of Denmark’s foremost sopranos. While she appeared in Germany and Paris, most
of Wilton’s career was in her native Denmark. Her few recordings were for HMV from 1924 to

WINOGRADOW [b]. Vilna, 1866-Israel, 1936.
Winogradow, born in Russia, appeared at Covent Garden in 1890
as Frere Laurent in Gounod’s Romeo et Juliette, also featuring
Nellie Melba and Jean and Edouard de Reszke. He was with the
Russian Imperial Opera (the Bolshoi) around 1901, alternating
with Tartakov. His American debut was in concert in New York at
the Hippodrome, 1920, under the sponsorship of Sol Hurok.
Musical America stated that his voice was “fresh, full, resonant,
manly and even throughout its long range-one of the best
baritone voices newly heard here in a long time. His production is
excellent and there is freedom and flexibility in his singing. He is
an artist – though, with his peculiar appearance [not further
explained], into just what niche in American musical life he will
fit is difficult to say.” He toured for the next few years and
eventually settled in Brooklyn where he served as a Cantor. In
1934 he moved to Israel.
