Would You Like To Teach A Class?
Have you got a new and fun or creative idea for a program? A special talent that
you might like to share? We are always searching for “something new” to offer, so
if you have an idea, please call the Recreation Office at 441-4500.
Non-Resident Fee Cooperative
The Village of Matteson has entered into agreements with neighboring
communities to help reduce the cost of recreation programs. Residents of the
following towns will be allowed to enroll in Matteson Recreational Services

This agreement will allow Matteson residents to enroll in activities offered by
these communities at the lower resident rates. This is just one example of intergovernmental cooperation that the south suburbs are working towards. If you
have any questions or comments regarding this concept, please feel free to contact
us at 441-4500.
Volunteers Needed
The Matteson Recreational Services Department utilizes volunteers for a variety of
programs. Our youth baseball and basketball leagues have long benefited from
those willing to volunteer their time as coaches. Volunteers not only help keep the
cost of programs down, but through community involvement, help the public
understand the workings of the Matteson Recreational Services Department.
Anyone wishing to volunteer their services for any program should contact the
Recreation business office at 441-4500 or stop by the Matteson Community Center
at 20642 Matteson Avenue.
Employment Opportunities
The Matteson Recreational Services Department periodically has openings for
persons to work part-time at a variety of positions; Program Instructors, Building
Attendants, and Members Services Representatives. Position vacancies can be
found on the web at www.villlageofmatteson.org, or inquire at the Human
Resource Department at 283-4949. Applications can be downloaded from the web,
www.villageofmatteson.org. Applications are only accepted when positions are
posted on the Village Website. Completed applications are to be mailed to or
dropped off at the Village Hall location, or placed in the drop box located at the

Our Matteson Recreational Services Staff has made every effort to prepare this

adjustments. The Department apologizes for any inconvenience these errors or
adjustments may cause.
Oakwood Recreation Center
Closing Policy
This policy covers the closing of the Oakwood Recreation Center due to either
extreme cold or lack of electricity. We have a different policy from the schools.
The Oakwood Recreation Center will be closed:
1. If the Center’s heating system is not sufficient to offset the cold (temperatures
at 60 degrees or lower inside the center). Classes may be moved to a different
room if the cold is isolated to just one room.
2. If the electricity is not working and the class or activity is held during the
evening.
If you are not sure whether the Oakwood Recreation Center is open, you may call
us at 441-4500 or the Village Hall at 283-4900.
Park Rules For Your
Safety And Protection
1. In order to assure the safety of children in playground, picnic and athletic
areas, our department STRICTLY PROHIBITS GLASS in the park system.
2. Dogs must be on a leash (6' or less) and owners must clean up after them.

established roads and obey posted traffic signs.
4. All park areas close at DUSK.
5.NO golfing is permitted in any of our parks.

outdoor facilities except by the police. These include knives, sling shots, BB

9. If the police are called and if, in the opinion of the Police Officer at the park,
there are continued violations of ordinances or disturbances, the officer has
the right to revoke any permit.
10. Full list of rules and regulations are available at the Recreation office.
Broken
Park Equipment
The Matteson Recreational Services Department requests that any broken play
equipment, park benches, or vandalism to park facilities and athletic fields be
reported by contacting the Recreational Services Department Office at 441-4500.
The Matteson Recreational Services Department’s facilities are supported by your
tax dollars. Your cooperation is appreciated to maintain the aesthetics of these
parks and facilities.
We Love Our Parents But...
With your child’s best interest in mind, parents are invited to their child’s last class
meeting. Our instructors have found that their quality of instruction had often
been affected by parent and/or sibling distractions, interruptions and various
other concerns during class time. We also feel it is most beneficial for children to
have recreational time with their peers. Our instructors always welcome the
opportunity to discuss a participant’s progress with parents at any time. Thank
you for your cooperation.

available through the Village of Matteson, as well as many other areas along the 20 plus miles of paved trail

A progressive CELTS Swim School Program designed specifically for
younger children between the ages of 0-3yr. Broken up by age, and
ability, the CELTS Babies & Me programs allow each child to progress
from ‘My First Swim Course’, to the ‘Introduction Course’, to the NEW
‘Little Fish Course’ leading right into our CELTS Swim Lessons.
Private Lessons (0 months – 3 yrs)
(4 months – 3 years)
The original Babies & Me Class has been broken down into 5 levels
allowing your child to progress at his/her own pace. We teach your
child the fundamentals of swimming by building a foundation of skills
to help prevent accidental drowning, as well as teach the beginning
techniques to developing a lifelong connection to the water. The
Babies & Me Course has been designed to lead into “Little Fish
Course”, developing each swimmers abilities in a small group setting
becoming more independent. Level advancement is determined by
the instructor(s) based on each individual child and classes can be

Aqua Fit is a true full-body workout
It’s not just your heart and muscles that stand to benefit from an
Aqua Fit class. Working out in water is also fantastic for your internal
organs and lymphatic system. Hydrostatic pressure, turbulence and
buoyancy assist in venous return [the flow of blood back to the heart]
and lymphatic drainage. These extra benefits help explain why
participants feel so good after a class – the body is refreshed rather
than exhausted.

(3 years – 14 years)
You have the opportunity to bring your child (CELTS Swim School
Youth participant) to the pool for some fun and practice time. This
allows the children to swim around and experience the water for
themselves. Playing in the water will help grow confidence and more
understanding of buoyancy and balance in the water. Children don’t
realize they are doing it, but they are practicing swimming techniques
on their own such as breathing, buoyancy, and balance. Not only can
your child meet other children from other classes, but even make new
friends. Children playing together will tend to hold small swimming
competitions, or ‘look what I can do’ presentations which is practice
without realizing it. Give your kids a weekend of fun and join them in
the pool to experience the many benefits of water and learning.
Experience an adventure, have a night of fun, be adventurous, be
inventive, whatever it is you are looking to experience, it could be
available to you. Check out our pre-designed, ‘Bubblemaker’ Party, or

SSRA Programs
South Suburban
Special Recreation Association
South Suburban Special Recreation Association (SSSRA) is a therapeutic
recreation program that is an extension of the Matteson Parks &
Recreation Department. SSSRA is organized to provide individuals with
special needs or disabilities the opportunity to be involved in year round
recreation programs.
SSSRA programs are for individuals from birth through adult who are in
special education classes, sheltered workshops or whom have
recreational needs not met by traditional park district programs.
Persons residing in SSSRA member agency communities are
considered residents. These agencies are: Country Club Hills Park
District, Frankfort Square Park District, Hazel Crest Park District,
Homewood-Flossmoor Park District, Lan-Oak Park District, Matteson
Recreational Division, Oak Forest Park District, Olympia Fields Park
District, Park Forest Recreation & Parks Department, Richton Park Parks
& Recreation Department, and Tinley Park-Park District.
Programs and special events are offered seasonally throughout the
year. They include programs in the areas of Early Childhood
Development, Cultural Arts, Illinois Special Olympics, Summer Day
Camp, Sports & Fitness, Social Programs, Adaptive Sports, Special
Events and Overnight Trips.
A complete program brochure is available at the Matteson Parks &
Recreation Department and the SSSRA office. Please call the SSSRA office
if you would like to receive the SSSRA brochure on a seasonal basis.
Professional staff with experience in the field of Therapeutic
Recreation or a related field supervise all SSSRA programs. They are
assisted by individuals who are trained by SSSRA staff in specific
areas of therapeutic recreation.
Scholarships are available to SSSRA residents with disabilities who
would like to participate in one or more programs, but cannot afford
the fees charged.
Through the Inclusion process, SSSRA staff members are available to
help participants choose an appropriate program, conduct staff
trainings, or supply adaptive equipment if you or a family member is
interested in a park district or recreation department program.

April Food Day A Major
Success for the Southland
The Village of Matteson is pleased to have partnered with
United Way and over 60 other municipalities, businesses and
organizations throughout the Chicago Southland to contribute to
this year’s April Food Day.
The Matteson Village Hall and Matteson Community Center
chipped in by participating as drop-off sites for several weeks leading
up to collection day. On April 1, 2016, all collected food was taken
to the Tinley Park Convention Center, where it was packed and
distributed to food pantries and shelters throughout the southland,
including our local Rich Township Food Pantry.
Over 90,000lbs of food was collected, tripling the set
goal for this year of 30,000 pounds.
Officer Ray Murray
Awarded Officer of the Year
The Matteson Police Department recently held their 9th Annual
Award’s Ceremony and Luncheon at the Holiday Inn where
numerous officers were recognized for going “above and beyond”
the call of duty, to keep the community safe and sound. Officer
Ray Murray was recognized as the 2015 Officer of the Year.
Congratulations to Officer Murray!

Public Works Updates
THE POINT AT GLENEAGLE TRAIL RESTORATION PROJECT
A restoration project is currently taking place within the Point at
Gleneagle Trail subdivision. A contractor has been out grinding
and resurfacing the streets, performing manhole adjustments and
establishing new sidewalks. This work is being done utilizing a
letter of credit from the developer.
CENTRAL AVENUE IMPROVEMENTS
Roadway improvement work has resumed on Central Avenue
between Lincoln Highway and Vollmer Road as part of a $1 million
surfacing program. The federally funded project is governed by the
State and began last October. Milling and resurfacing of the road is
currently taking place.
Arbor Day 2016
The Village celebrated its 24th year of Tree City status
during this year’s Arbor Day celebration on April 29,
2016. Arbor Day is an international holiday that is
often celebrated by the planting of a tree. This year,
the Public Works Department along with Village
Administrator Brian Mitchell, members of the Police
Department, Fire Department, and other Village
staff planted a tree with the students at St. Paul
Lutheran School. The students enjoyed being part of a
celebration and learned more about the importance of
trees to our environment.
Stormwater Fees
WHAT IS A STORMWATER FEE?
Like gas, electricity, water and sewage, stormwater runoff can
be managed as a utility on the concept that every property in a
watershed contributes stormwater
runoff and should support the
operation, maintenance, and
rehabilitation of stormwater
drainage systems in the Village.
HOW IS THE FEE USED?
The Stormwater Utility Fee is used
to maintain, improve, expand
and when necessary, replace the
Village stormwater and storm drainage infrastructure. The result is
reduced flooding and improved stream quality; making Matteson
more attractive, safe and environmentally sustainable. These
activities protect storm drain pipes from collapse and stormwater
management facilities from dam failures.

Where Does Matteson’s Water
Come From?
The Village of Matteson receives water pumped from Lake
Michigan; it is treated and filtered by the City of Chicago, then
pumped to the Village of Oak Lawn. Oak Lawn treats the water
with chlorine gas, and then pumps it to the Village of Matteson’s
three ground storage tanks.
Two of these tanks hold 1.5 million gallons each and the other
stores 3 million gallons. Our two water towers each hold 0.5 million
gallons for a total storage capacity in Matteson of 7 million gallons.
The Village also treats the water with chlorine before it leaves the
station. On average, the Village pumps 1.6 million gallons per day
to the community.
Governed by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA), the Village is required to take 30 water samples every month
and have them tested for bacteria. The results of these tests are
sent to the EPA office. We anticipate making these sample reports
available for public viewing on the Village website very soon.

Department News
Someone You Should Know:
Village Clerk Dorothy Grisco
Dorothy Grisco began her public service to the Village of Matteson
in 2001 as Village Clerk. She is now fulfilling her fourth term and
has served the Village proudly for over 15 years.
Grisco is a 16 year resident of Matteson’s Maple Brook
subdivision, but was born and raised in a
small Pennsylvania town called Puritan. She
also lived in Chicago for a number of years
where she attended Richard J. Daley College
before gaining secretarial, real estate and
medical transcriptionist experience. Grisco
worked in real estate for over 20 years and
retired from Holy Cross Hospital in 1999.
After moving to Matteson, her husband
passed away and she had to get back to
work. A friend, who was running for Trustee,
mentioned to her that the Village Clerk
position was up for election. At first, she was
hesitant to consider it since she had only lived
in the Village a short time, did not know many
residents, and was not familiar with municipal
government. Nevertheless, she decided to run. When the time came
for the petitions to be filed, no one else came forth and therefore,
she started her new career as an elected official. Since her first day on the job, she explains that her time as
Clerk has been fulfilling.
“I’ve learned so much about municipal government,” she
said. “I’ve enjoyed working with all of the Village employees and
meeting diverse people of different backgrounds, careers, and
walks of life.”
Outside if her work, Grisco enjoys
dancing, walking, gardening and crafts. She
has three daughters and one grandson.
“Dancing is my favorite,” she said.
Grisco is also an active volunteer who has
campaigned for Senator Michael Hastings,
Representative Al Riley, Congresswoman
Robin Kelly and other state legislators. She
is involved with the Maple Brook HOA, the
South/Southwest Suburban Clerk’s Association
and has hosted local Diversity Dinners five
times. She takes pride in having learned a
great deal about diversity, and meeting such
impactful people during her time as Clerk.
She remembers a time meeting Barack
Obama when he was an Illinois Senator, and
saying to him, “you’re going to be president someday.” Experiences
like these, she says, are what have made the job rewarding.
“It’s unbelievable to have met all these people,” she said. “A
shy little girl from Puritan, Pennsylvania. “I never expected to be
where I am.”

Help the Matteson Police
Department Support Special
Olympics Illinois
The Matteson Police Department is pleased to
announce our partnership with the Illinois Special
Olympics. Every year the Matteson Police Department
coordinates several fundraising events to help raise
money for this most worthy cause.
The major summer event is the annual
Nationwide Law Enforcement Torch Run. This event
is the single largest fundraising event benefitting
the Special Olympics. The Torch Run has two goals:
to raise money for nearly 20,000 Illinois athletes
to compete in 175 year round competitions in 19
different sports and to reward the accomplishments
of the participants; which enhance their physical
fitness, motor skills, self-confidence, friendship and
family support.
The Matteson Police Department is hoping to
raise $15,000 this year, and there are a few ways you
can help us reach our goal. (see Cop on a Rooftop and
Torch Run events below)
MFD Partners with PFFD to Provide
Experience for District 227 Students
The Matteson Fire Department recently partnered with
the Park Forest Fire Department and Rich Township
School District 227 to provide an interactive learning
experience for 90 district students.
Students from Rich Central, Rich East and Rich
South were bused over to
Freedom Hall and the Park
Forest Fire Training Site to
gain a basic understanding
of fire behavior, and learn
about the role of a fire
investigator. Students spent
the day being lectured at
Freedom Hall, followed by
witnessing three live burns
at the training site.
LT Michael Bacon,
who has been with the
Matteson Fire Department
for a total of 25 years and is
also an arson investigator
with Division 27 and the Will-Cook-Grundy Task
Force, played an instrumental role in putting this
experience together.
“I was contacted by a teacher from Rich South
who teaches their forensics class,” he said. “I later
found out that Rich Central contacted the Park Forest

Fire Department and had the same request. We have
an excellent working relationship with Park Forest so
we decided to do it together.”
The live burns proved to be very engaging for
the students as three mock rooms went up in flames
before being extinguished
by a fireman. Students were
then given the opportunity
to walk through and inspect
fire damages while asking
questions.
“I am happy to see
classes like this are now
offered in high school,” LT
Bacon said. “This was our
first time doing this, and
we already have the request
from the district to make
this a yearly event.”
LT Bacon and the
Matteson Fire Department
would like to thank Matteson Home Depot for
the generous donation of drywall and other materials
to make the burn happen, and would also like to
recognize Captain Myers from Park Forest
and Lieutenant Weir from Chicago Heights.
