 Democratic Values and Linguistic Diversity TRADITIONAL STORY Romania “VLAD TEPES “ For the traditional story we chose the historical character Prince Vlad Tepes. Vlad Tepes was a character that has fascinated both the literary and the historical world. We chose Vlad Tepes because we see him as the most representative figure of righteousness, justice, fairness and honesty. Vlad the Impaler was a man who above all loved justice, and who did not hesitate to sacrifice himself for a political ideal of our history, “The Independence" Vlad the Impaler, also known as Vlad Drăculea ( or commonly known as Dracula) was the ruler of Wallachia. He ruled three times in 1448; 1456-­‐1462; 1476. Vlad the Impaler was one of the greatest heroes of the struggle for freedom and independence of Romania.He is one of the most important rulers who marked with his personality the Romanian history Biography Vlad Țepeș was born in the city of Sighișoara in Transylvania in 1431;he was a ruler of Wallachia -­‐a region of nowadays Romania. His father was Vlad II Dracul and his mother was a Transylvanian noble woman. He was married three times and had five children, four boys and a girl of three marriages: Radu and Vlad from his first marriage, Michael and Mihnea the Bad from the second, and Zaleska from his third wife. Vlad Tepes became famous by his severity and because he used to have his enemies impaled. The merchants of Brasov, characterized his methods as cruel and demonic . Vlad was assassinated in 1476.The body was decapitated and his head was sent in a bowl full of honey to Istanbul. It is not known where his body was buried. It was assumed that he was buried at Snagov Monastery, or Comana Monastery, which he built. Origin of "Dracula" and the nickname "Tepes". His father, Vlad Dracul, was let into the Order of the Dragon, an order that can be compared with that of the Knights of Malta, and was called Dracul. In his turn, Vlad will be knighted as a member of the Order of the Dragon in 1431. The name Vlad the Impaler was given to him since the XVth century because of his practice of impaling as form of punishment He was loved and feared by his people. Known for his sadism, Vlad was respected by his subjects for his fighting campaigns against the Turks and defending the contry`s borders. Justice was seen as a virtue. Historically Vlad Tepes has enjoyed over centuries a great popularity ; his subjects saw him as a man of justice .He was brave and fearless,daring, worthy, moral. BUT he hated,stealing, laziness, begging, deceit and greed. Vlad the Impaler (Dracula), between myth and historical truth. Vlad Tepes was a character that has fascinated both the literary (to mention only Bram Stoker`s Dracula) and the historical world. His life is to be understood only with the help of the numerous legends. He was the subject of many works, both literary and historical ones. Intended or not, Vlad Ţepeş is a living legend. He would not have raised so much interest if it had not been for his important traits of character, personality and his controversial deeds.
