Roughly 400 parents and students arrived to get a tour of the school and see if it was for them. The day began with a presentation from Ms. Sto- rey and following that, the parents were split up and shown around the school’s facilities. They had tea and coffee in the dining hall, personalised key-chains from the technology room, and atomic models in the chemistry lab. The parents got an all-inclusive tour of the school and what it has to offer accompanied by a staff member and two volunteering students per group. Both parents and students alike agreed the tour went fantastically, despite the unexpectedly large turnout. We’ll be hoping to see some of their faces again in the new school year! http://www.villiers-school.com October 2014 PAGE 2 : @VilliersSchool REDSOKZ Junior Certificate Results 2014 On Wednesday the 10th of October 2014, the fourth years received their Junior Certificate Examination Results. It was a tense and exciting day for everyone involved, with students excited and nervous. Our fourth years completed their Junior Certificate Examinations in June 2014. This was a written exam for all subjects, subjects such as Irish, French, Spanish, and German included an oral and an aural. Technology, C.S.P.E., Religion, and Science all required a project to be done during the course of the year, and Music included a listening exam and a practical exam. Students studied hard and consistently though out the course of the three years in which they completed ther ‘Junior Cycle’. The aim of the Junior Certificate is to give students an idea of what their Leaving Certificate Examinations will be like in ‘Senior Cycle’. The Junior Certificate also helps students to decide what subjects students want to do for their Leaving Certificate but also at what level (Higher, Ordinary, Foundation) they want to do them at. This years results were excellent, when asked what advice students would give for the students their exam year they said: “Make sure you work from the start, don't try and cram it all in at the end” Luke. Others said “If you're not happy with your results just remember that it's only a stepping stone and the important exam is the Leaving Cert”Holly. Our fourth years were very happy with their results and we hope that it is the same for this years 2015 exam year! - by Kate O’ Dwyer “How are you feeling now that you have your results?” - “Pretty great! This juice really hits the spot, I'm gonna go text my Mom” - Sean http://www.villiers-school.com October 2014 VOLUME XIV, ISSUE I : @VilliersSchool PAGE 3 ALS/MND Ice Bucket On Friday the 19th of September, the staff of Villiers school participated in the “Ice Bucket Challenge” The event raised over €400 for the ALS/ MND association. The ice bucket challenge is a Facebook craze that involved people pouring ice water over their heads and donating an amount of money for ALS/MND, usually €2, but more money can be given. The nominees would nominate around three or four people to do the ice bucket challenge after them, these nominees had 24 hours to do the ice bucket challenge and donate. Facebook ensured thathe ice bucket challenge spread very fast. The ALS/MND association raised $100,000,000 over the course of 30 days, dwarfing the $2.2 million dollars raised in 2013. The ice bucket challenge was hugely beneficial to the cause, and Villiers is proud to be part of that. Some of the faculty involved were Mr Murphy, Ms. Quinn, Ms. Storey, Mr. Mc Crohan, Mr. Brown, Mr. Jones, Mr. O’Hanlon, Mr. Sadleir and Mr. The school staff before and after the challenge! White. All the people involved were very pleased with the results, and all the students involved were very happy with pouring water over their favourite teachers. Many thanks to 4N for making this happen and as well as getting Mr. Murphy a free parrot onesie – I’m sure he’ll enjoy wearing it around the school for times to come. - by Jasvir Kalsi http://www.villiers-school.com : @VilliersSchool October 2014 PAGE 4 REDSOKZ Talent Show 2014 This year’s talent show took place in the dining hall on Wednesday the 15th of October at 7pm. The talent show was in aid of this year’s MUN trip to Germany and Denmark. A lot of time and preparation was put into the planning of the show by various members of the Talent Show Committee. They organised the posters that were put up around the school to advertise the talent show, got names of all the acts wanting to perform, got backing tracks, sorted the dining hall out for the show and also collected the money from people entering and people wanting to watch the show itself. There were a total of 10 acts in the talent show, which preformed a range of different talents including; singing, playing the guitar and playing the piano. Even the teachers preformed with a beautiful rendition of ‘Dear Mr President’. Two transition year students, Kate and Luke acted as presenters of the show and we had three brilliant judges, Ms. Woods, Keith Ryan and student representative Sean Browne. It was very tough for the judges to choose the win- Laoise Flanagan, First Place ners as the acts were all very good in different ways. After a few minutes the judges had made their final decision. Although it was very difficult to decide on just 3 winners, the judging panel gave 1st place to Laoise Flanagan who sang and played the piano, 2nd place to Reece Creed who sang ‘Shake it off’ by Taylor Swift, and 3rd place to Amelia De Carteree who sang and played guitar. It was an extremely entertaining night for all who attended and everyone who took part really enjoyed themselves. - by Kate Kelly Teachers Singing Group http://www.villiers-school.com October 2014 VOLUME XIV, ISSUE I PAGE 5 Prize Day 2014 On Wednesday, the 1st October, Villiers School hosted its annual Prize Day. We had many prize winners from our school, in categories such as academics, sports and music. Ms. Storey and Ms. Quinn were dressed in the traditional robes of the principal and vice principal. Ms Storey opened the ceremony with a very informative and heartwarming speech about the past school year, including the Leaving Cert and Junior Cert results. The Mayor of Limerick, Micheal Sheahan from Askeaton, also spoke at the event. He spoke : @VilliersSchool about how the young people of Limerick are slowly making a change and are the only ones who can make a difference in the future. He is the 818th Mayor of Limerick, but the first mayor of the new Limerick City Metropolitan Area, which means that the city boundaries have spread as far as Askeaton. He told us we should be proud of our city and of our culture. Hugh McCormack, the son of Dr. Percy McCormack, who is a past pupil of Villiers, came to speak on his behalf, because his father was ill in America. His father had been a past pupil of Villiers and had worked with NASA and other major science facilities all around the world. He has a PHD and has lectured in colleges and universities all around the world. It was a lovely day enjoyed by parents, students, teachers and guests and thank you to everyone who participated. - by Siobhán Murphy http://www.villiers-school.com : @VilliersSchool October 2014 PAGE 6 REDSOKZ World News Emma Watson’s UN Speech When former Harry Potter star and UN Women's Goodwill Ambassador Emma Watson delivered her recent eloquent speech on gender equality at the UN she was shamelessly looking for male attention. That is male attention on the new 'HeForShe' campaign calling on men and boys to join the fight against s e xi s m . She spoke about how at eight years old people called her "bossy" for wanting to direct plays while boys were allowed to lead without question. "I decided that I was a feminist," and "feminism has become an unpopular word. Women are choosing not to identify as feminists". Some women, especially young and impressionable girls, shy away from labelling themselves as a 'feminist'. This is due to feminism being too often seen as "man hating" rather than its rightful definition "the belief that all genders should be treated equally". She also spoke about how sexism affects men as well as women. Suicide is one of the biggest killers of young men in many countries today and part of this is due to the fact men are also imprisoned by gender stereotypes. They feel that they can't reach out to people or express themselves emotionally for fear of looking less "macho". W hen gender equality is achieved, everyone will benefit. The events following Watson's speech, served only to prove her point. Though the initial reaction from the public was extremely positive, with many praising Watson for her moving speech and passion for the cause, threats began to emerge online. The worst case was where a campaign to close a social media site (4Chan) used Emma's fame for their own ends by claiming to be about to post compromising pictures of the starlet. This follows a worrying trend where lea di ng f em ale voices are barracked by online trolls in ways that simply are not replicated for men. Frequently, when a woman voices her opinion on a controversial topic many people who disagree launch a personal attack on her, picking on either her appearance or imagined sexual behavior. Men however, do not experience the same rea c t i o n . Never the less, the main message I feel that should be taken from this is that misogyny is still evident in the world today and that we all must play our part in putting an end to it, no matter what gender. - by Holly Power http://www.villiers-school.com October 2014 : @VilliersSchool VOLUME XIV, ISSUE I PAGE 7 The Umbrella Revolution The Umbrella Revolution in Hong Kong began on Sept. 26th, when hundreds of students refused to go to school to protest against the communist Chinese government. The school curriculum in Hong Kong was changed to promote communism and to use indoctrination to create the perfect com- munist country China. in After Britain gave China back to the people following a 150 year colonization, China’s politics have been troubled to say the least. After a promise to keep moving forward, the government took a large step backward and refused to hold the elections if didn’t select candidates, didn’t leave people of Kong with power at all. China all the which the Hong any When the students went to the streets to protest, thousands of locals joined them in a peaceful protest. While the protest was very successful in the sense that nothing got broken, and nobody got hurt, when the police got involved, there was chaos. Tear gas and other rioting meth- ods were used to dispel the once peaceful revolution. The name umbrella revolution comes from the image of the people using the umbrella to stop the police’s attempt of stopping them. The revolution is still in progress, and hopefully the Chinese people can shake off the governments control. Right now all we can do is wait and see what happens. - by Jasvir Kalsi http://www.villiers-school.com October 2014 PAGE 8 : @VilliersSchool REDSOKZ Beauty Column—by Kate Kelly Eye shadow - The Naked Palettes - Right off the bat you can see that the Naked 3 has an overall rose gold theme with 12 eye shadows in a gorgeous, wave-textured tin case. Each palette has 12 shadows generally flowing from light to dark. The current selling palettes all come with a synthetic eye shadow brush (Naked is single-ended while 2 and 3 include dual-ended brushes). Generally speaking, Naked has mostly warm neutrals, Naked 2 is in the neutral-to-taupe range with more drastic light and dark shadows, and Naked 3 is distinctly more pink with a lot of mid-to-light shades. Naked 3 in particular has no copycat shadows in any other collection, which is nice for the eye shadow collector. Foundation - Benefits Hello Flawless Oxygen Wow Liquid Foundation - It is a brightening, oilfree liquid foundation that builds from light to medium coverage with broad spectrum SPF 25 protection. There are 9 shades available in this foundation which I think is a little disappointing; brands definitely need to start catering for a more varied audience! Overall I really like this foundation; I love how it looks on my skin and how it makes me look dewy, yet matte and not at all oily at the same time. It retails at €36.00 which is a bit pricy but in my opinion I think it’s worth it because it will last.A brightening, oil-free liquid foundation that builds from light to medium coverage with broad-spectrum SPF 25 protection.A brightening, oil-free liquid foundation that builds from light to medium coverage with broadspectrum SPF 25 protection.A brightening, oilfree liquid foundation that builds from light to medium coverage with broad-spectrum SPF 25 protection. http://www.villiers-school.com VOLUME XIV, ISSUE I October 2014 : @VilliersSchool PAGE 9 Mascara - L’Oreal Volume Million Lashes Mascara The Millionizer brush has a multitude of bristles to separate lashes for a fanned-out lash effect. The elastomer applicator is ultra-flexible with both long and short bristles to coat each lash evenly from root to tip. The excess wiper removes excess mascara. It leaves the brush coated with just the right amount of formula to achieve maxed up volume with no overload and no clumps. Its Clump-free. Smudge-proof which I find is very beneficial. High beam - luminescent complexion enhancer - My first try with this highlighter. Love the light, sheer glow. Makes the face look moist and sun kissed. I've tried highlighters before; many have silica for sparkle. I didn't want that look. This highlighter gave me a subtle, healthy glow I wanted. Little goes a long way. One application in the morning lasts all day. I highly recommend this product. Nails - Salon Effects Real Nail Polish Strips There very easy to apply and last way longer then nail polish would in my opinion. There a bit pricey for a nail product but I can guarantee you will be satisfied with the end result of these stick on nail designs. http://www.villiers-school.com October 2014 PAGE 10 : @VilliersSchool REDSOKZ Netflix—Up and Comers in TV Production Back in March of 2011, the popular streaming company ‘Netflix’ began producing TV shows of their own, beginning with Kevin Spacey’s political dr am a ‘House of Cards’ which debuted in February 2013. In total Netflix has produced 7 of their own brand shows, one of the most well-known being popular jail comedy-drama ; ‘Orange Is the New Black’. The show debuted on Netflix on the 11th of July 2013. The show itself is based on the memoirs of one Piper Kerman who spent a year in a woman’s prison and proceeded to write her book of the same title as the show. Piper Chapman who is sentenced to 15 months in a federal prison for transporting a suitcase full of drug money for her former girlfriend Alex Vause. The show takes place 10 years after the event of this crime and within those ten years, Piper settled down to live a quiet law-abiding life in the upper middle class with her fiancé Larry Bloom. Once Piper arrives in prison she has to quickly adjust from her pampered lifestyle and learn how to survive, while also enduring her reunion with her ex, Alex. Season one focuses on introducing all of Piper’s fellow inmates and dedicating one episode each to their individThe series revolves ual backstories, around New Yorker while also following Piper’s ventures in prison. This flashback and flash forward formula works very well for the pacing of the episodes as you don’t get only one storyline per episode. Instead you get your main plotline of Piper in prison, while also getting more information on the side characters as Piper’s story progresses. The producers incorporate the blending of past and present very well and the 50 minutes of running time feels like nothing, leaving you wanting to watch more and more after each episode. Throughout the shows running they have tackled many different issues such as drug abuse, bullying, discrimination and sexual orientation etc. Most famously, they have included t r ansgender actress, Laverne Cox. Her inclusion in the show is a great statement to the rest of the world. Laverne has been a great role model and example for all oppressed minorities around the world even making the cover of time magazine on the 9th of June of this year. Orange is the new Black is a critically acclaimed show and has won over 15 awards having been nominated for over 30. It continues to entertain its huge international fan base it has accumulated over its two seasons and year and a half of running. The third season is scheduled for release in the summer of 2015 and will be available to any and all of the current 50 million subscribers and anyone within Netflix’s 13 available regions who wishes to subscribe. - by Ryan O’ Shaughnessy http://www.villiers-school.com October 2014 : @VilliersSchool VOLUME XIV, ISSUE I PAGE 11 Movie Review — Dracula Untold 'Dracula Untold' is the cinematic portrayal of the origin story of Vlad the Impaler, or as we have come to know him as, Count Dracula. T he st o r y starts with the story of Vlad's childhood and how he was raised as part of a children's army the Sultan of Turkey had been organising. These children were trained to kill without consulting their own morality, essentially raising them as heartless killing machines. Vlad himself was one of the best soldiers earning him the title 'the Impaler' for reasons you can probably imagine. He also gained his own freedom from his slavery and became the prince of Transylvania. The plot revolves around an aged Vlad being threatened by the Turks when they demand 1000 boys for their army. Vlad wishes to refuse, but he doesn't have the firepower to fight back against the Sultan's forces. Vlad decides he has to do whatever he can to protect his people, so he calls on the master vampire who is trapped inside a mountain nearby Transylvania. The master vampire accepts Vlad's pleas and turns him into a vampire, so 'Dracula’ now has the power to protect his people and plans to single handedly take on the Turks. This action mythological based ‘beat em up’ has a good plot idea but unfortunately has trouble with its progression. It is always jumping to a new story within the story and doesn’t dedicate enough time to developing its character leaving you with uninteresting stereotypical characters and a plot that could’ve been written by a ten year old who likes explosions. As undeveloped as the charac- ters were, the actors did very well in their own delivery somewhat bringing salvation to the bland originality of the film. Overall this movie was fairly entertaining but you wouldn’t look to it for a deep meaningful plot. Instead you just get generic good guy beating up generic bad guy to save generic love interest. ‘Dracula Untold’ gets a 6/10. - by Ryan Shaughnessy O’ http://www.villiers-school.com October 2014 : @VilliersSchool PAGE 12 REDSOKZ Music Ed Sheeran – X Ed Sheeran’s album was one of the best this year but unfortunately we feel as a group the single Sing was made just to sell instead Ed Sheeran staying true to his authentic feel. It’s variety of tasty ingredients really build up for the soups flavour. Lemongrass, kaffir, lime leaves, galangal, lime juice, fish sauce, and crushed chilli pepper. Ingredients 3 chili peppers 5 sprigs cilantro 2 tablespoon fish sauce 3 kaffir lime leaves lemongrass 1-2 limes 5 Mushrooms 1 tablespoon Nam Prig Pow Optional 1 cup shrimp 4 cups water Method: 1. Boil water in a 2 quart pot. Peel and de-vein the shrimp and set them aside. Cut lemon grass into pieces, 5-6 inches long. Use the back of your knife to pound the lemon grass, just to bruise it to release the flavor. Tie the lemon grass into a knot to make it easier to manage. Drop the lemon grass in water and let boil for 5 minutes. 2. Put the fish sauce and 1 lime's juice into the bottom of the bowls you will serve the soup in. Crush chili pepper and add to the bowl. 3. Remove the stems from the kaffir lime leaves and add the leafy part to the pot. Clean and halve the mushrooms and add them to the pot. Let it boil. Add the shrimp and turn off the heat. Shrimp gets tough very quickly, and will cook even when it is just sitting in the warm broth. Scoop the shrimp and liquid into the serving bowls immediately. As soon as you add the liquid to the serving bowl, you will see that the broth becomes cloudy because of the lime juice. Add the nam prig pow. Sprinkle with cilantro and serve. 4. Be very careful, the peppers can be hot. Take a small sip at a time. Add more fish sauce and/or lime juice if it tastes bland. http://www.villiers-school.com October 2014 VOLUME XIV, ISSUE I : @VilliersSchool PAGE 17 Nam Tok Moo Nom Tok, meaning waterfall, Moo meaning pork. The story behind the name of this dish, was that the meat served will contain some blood when served, and when the meat sliced blood will run out of it like a waterfall. Legends say that the blood from the meat along with the dressing inspired happy carnivore to name this brilliant dish “waterfall (nam tok moo) meat.” Method: Ingredients 1 lb of beef 1 1/2 tablespoons of fish sauce 1 slixe of green onion 2 teaspoons ground dried chili pepper 1 1/4 lime 1 sliced shallot 10 sprigs sliced spearmint 1 1/2 tablespoons of toasted rice 1. Use 1 inch thick London broil for this dish. Leave the steak at room temperature 1 hour prior to cooking for even cooking. The charcoal should be hot with small flames and lightly covered with ash. Without covering the lid, grill the steak for 10-12 minutes, 6 minutes on one side and 4 more minutes on the other side for medium rare. Add 2 more minutes on each side for well done. I like mine medium rare. Let the steak sit on a plate while you prep the vegetables and seasoning. 2. Peel and slice shallot thinly. Slice green onion and mint leaves. 3. Slice the steak into thin slices so that the beef is tender and absorbs seasoning well. Add lime juice, shallot, green onion, mint leaves, ground chili pepper, ground toasted rice and fish sauce to the steak. Mix well. Take a taste. 4. The beef should be balanced by salty and sour, with the nutty flavor of toasted rice and refreshing mint flavor on every bite. Ground chili pepper at 2 teaspoons is about a comfortable level of heat for me. If you love really hot food, you might want to add more chili pepper. 5. Serve with sticky rice and fresh vegetables. Popular vegetables accompanying nam tohk are cabbage, green beans, dill leaves, mint, Thai basil and cucumber. http://www.villiers-school.com October 2014 : @VilliersSchool PAGE 18 REDSOKZ YSI — Animal of the Month Our Young Social Innovators (YSI) group are campaigning for animal welfare awareness and our first project is called “Animal of the month”. Dear Harsh But True, I don’t know who to turn to so I turned to you. I have struggled with my weight for a few years now. I know that every teenage girl struggles with their weight, but I feel like food is taking over my life. I can’t eat anything without worrying what the calories are in it and foods I used to love are now scary to eat. I’ve tried various different methods to lose weight, some less healthy then others, although they fix the problem temporarily, none are a long term method. Sometimes if clothes won’t fit, or I even look in the mirror I feel depressed and hopeless. I feel like everyone around me, my friends, celebrities and even people on the street are so much skinnier than me, and I feel compared to them. I just want to go back to the person that never worried about what they ate, or what everyone else thought about them. Help me, Harsh but true, please. - Anonymous, 14 Dear Anonymous, You first of all need to remember that weight does not define you as a person; it does not make you a bad person, just as much as it does not make you a good person. I know it is hard growing up and having that pressure to be ‘perfect’, but you need to remember that you already are. Through your life you are going to gain weight and lose weight but that is just how it’s going to be, and you are going to have to deal with that no matter how hard it can be. If you feel that you are unhealthy and want to lose weight, solely for health reasons, you have to go about it the healthy way, and not starving yourself. We would advise that you speak to a parent or a doctor about this issue. Always remember to love yourself no matter what and that everyone else that you are comparing yourself to have the same problem, so you are not alone in this.
