QJS NEWSLETTER F E B R U A R Y 2 0 1 4 From the Desk of Ms. Bolin... 585 Callanan FEBRUARY Quesnel BC Although the temperature is falling again, spring is just around the corner.. really it is! I’m no weatherman but I can recognize what a group of grade 8/9 students look like as we get closer to the end of the year. Not only are they taller but we have also watched them grow academically and socially during the %me that they are here with us. We had an assembly yesterday and having ALL of our students in the gym a(er lunch for David Bouchard’s presenta%on le( me with a feeling of pride for who our students are at QJS. They were a/en%ve, respec0ul and engaged in the message that our speaker had to offer. We need con%nue to keep making sure we are suppor%ng them through the remainder of the year as it won’t be long before our grade nines are ge2ng ready for the big transi%on over to Correlieu. Yes pre/y soon will be sending home more informa%on about the April 15th orienta%on day at Correlieu. Also, remember we have our parent teacher interviews on Wednesday April 2nd and this is a great %me to check in with your child’s teachers so that they can con%nue on a successful path for the rest of the year. Thanks for con%nuing to work with us, communicate with us and support your child through this school year. Your kids are great! QJS NEWSLETTER Gathering Our Voices on Health will be in Vancouver, BC - March 18-21, 2014. · Early registra+on fees are $125/par%cipant (including youth, young adults AND chaperones) and are due by Feb 7th (a(er Feb 7th - $175.00) · For every group of five (5) people registered, the sixth (6) person is FREE. · All youth aged 14-24 are eligible to a/end the conference. Youth MUST be fourteen (14) by March 18, 2014 in order to a/end. Or interrupt class if it’s an emergency. Floor Hockey Intramurals Floorhockey intramurals are going strong. We have seven teams in two pools playing games at lunch. Students have been playing hard, enjoying themselves and displaying good sportsmanship. We have had very good fan support with lots of spectators coming out to cheer on their teams. Round robin games will be wrapping up in the next week and then we move into playoffs! Stay tuned for results! Parent/Teacher Interviews Parent/Teacher interviews will be taking place at Quesnel Junior School on Wednesday, April 2, 2014. Interview forms will be sent home and also be available in the office. Forms must be returned to the office before March 26 to secure an interview. Unfortunately, late forms will not be accepted and therefore, interviews will not be granted due to limited space. THE THEME THIS YEAR IS “UP”, THE DISNEY MOVIE. QJS NEWSLETTER Open Campus 2014 Typically, a(er March Break we begin to open campus. The first 3 weeks we have open Fridays for grades 8 and 9 (see dates below since we are missing a few Friday’s over the next few months so we have adjusted those days). April 18/19 os the start of Thursdays and Fridays for grade 9 students. Grade 8 students con%nue to have open Fridays. A(er the long weekend in May, Grade 9 students have full open campus. Grade 8 will con%nue to have open Fridays. At the PAC mee%ng at the beginning of April we can discuss our plans with parents. We always reserve the right to change the plan if we are experiencing concerns and or problems. PAGE QJS Students Go for Gold! 5 Congratula+ons to our BC Winter Games athletes from Quesnel! QJS students Ryan Elden, Tristan Langan and Anni Kurta qualified for biathlon this year. BC Winter Games were held in Mission Feb. 20-23, 2014. Events were held at different venues, and the biathlon team had to bus to Mission, BC and then on to Whistler to complete their races. Quesnel athletes were part of the Northern Zone 8 team, and had fantas+c results in their divisions. There were 2 different biathlon races, and Quesnel athletes medalled in each of the races, in their divisions. Anni Kurta - Gold * Ryan Elden - Gold * Tristen Langen - Silver National Cupcake Day Many QJS students volunteered their %me to make posters, raise funds, and bake delicious cupcakes for the SPCA's Na%onal Cupcake Day, held on Friday Feb 21 at the school's front lobby. The team raised 304 dollars through cupcake sales and monetary dona%ons. All contribu%ons can be seen online at the SPCA's Online Bakery, team name: Cupcakes for Cute Cri/ers( h/p://support.spca.bc.ca/goto/ CuteCri/ers ). As of press %me, the total amount raised was 304 dollars. Team captain, teacher Cathy Burke would like to thank Priya Badhan, Jaydegh Billingsley, Courtney Larose, Jordyn Henderson, Emma Faust, Mr. Dennis Hawkins-Bogle, Andrew Sherstan, Riddhiman Kansal, Kailee Sissons, Jakob Barnes and Kur%s Groll for the %me and effort they put into making this day such a success! House 4 Valentine Candy Grams to help Local SPCA H ouse 4 students spread joy and happiness around the school and raise $120 for the Quesnel SPCA. At the beginning of February, House 4 students sold, made and delivered Candy Grams for Valen%ne's Day. All the money from the sale of Candy Grams will be donated the Quesnel SPCA.
