Wester Hailes Calders Edible Estates - Spring Bulletin Hello and a very Happy New Year to you! We have events, activities and classes to get you out of the house, keeping fit, cooking healthy meals on a tight budget and making new friends in 2014. And it’s all free - what’s not to like? New Community Gardens for Calders in 2014 We’re really pleased to announce that there will be three completely new community gardens built in the Calders in 2014. Calders Residents Association have asked us to help them build some raised beds outside the Community Flat at Dunsyre House to plant lovely flowering climbers and herbs for cooking. The Council will be building the ‘Plinth Garden’ to the north of Dunsyre House in March, creating growing beds for ten residents. A third community garden will be built by Edible Estates in the grounds of Sighthill Primary School, which will provide growing beds for up to forty residents. Cooking Classes Last year’s cooking classes were great fun and we’ll be repeating them this year. At ‘We Are What We Eat’ an informal gathering held on Wednesday evenings (at Calder Gardens Sheltered Housing), we learned; how to cook a delicious Moroccan 7 vegetable stew and couscous in a couscousiere; baked our own rolls and loaves; and made chips from kale harvested from the allotment! The ‘Cookery Self Defence’ classes were designed to help people eat well on a basic budget. We went shopping for food bargains and learned how to prepare and cook nutritious meals and to and store leftovers safely in the freezer. Fifteen raised beds were built and strawberry runners, onion sets and garlic cloves were planted. In November, seventeen Calders young people and adults planted nineteen apple, pear and plum trees. Our vision for the garden is to create a beautiful place where households can come in, relax, and help themselves to fruit in season. Going into the spring next year, a fence will be built around the site, and the new shipping container tool shed will be painted and kitted out with a veranda Let Us Know Now If You Want Your Own Growing Space!
