ASSOCIATION INTERNATIONALE DES UNIVERSITES DU TROISIEME AGE JOURNEY TO JAPAN From October 04 to 16, 2016 For the International Conference of AIUTA in Osaka DISCOVER THE SPIRIT OF JAPAN TOKYO – NAGOYA - OSAKA - NARA - KYOTO Day 1 Departure on 04/10/16 Arrival in Tokyo on 05/10/16, you will be picked up at the airport and sent to your hotel. Free day. Stay of 3 nights at the 2 star Fukudaya hotel. Price: € 57 for a double or twin room. Day 2 06/10 Visit of park Shinjuku Gyoen. Located in the Shibuya District, it is probably the most beautiful park of Tokyo. It is most particularly beautiful in autumn when the leaves of the trees take a red colour. Visit of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, located a few minutes away by walking from the Shinjuku park. It is one of the Tokyo skyscrapers from where we will be able to have a wonderful view of the city. Visit of the Meiji Jingu Temple which is a mausoleum dedicated to Meiji Emperor, and visit of Yoyogi Koen’s parc which surrounds the mausoleum After our exploration of Meiji temple, we pass by Takeshita Dori Street to take our lunch. This street is renowned for being frequented by extravagant people dressed in cosplay costumes. We will continue our walk towards the heart of Shibuya District which is one of the liveliest places in Japan where crowds of people walk through the Hachiko crossroad everyday. We will take our dinner in Ebisu, which is 2 km south of Hachiko crossroad and is renowned for its little restaurants and bars, frequented by office workers. Day 3 07/10 Early in the morning, we will head to the Tsukiji fish market, which is the largest wholesale market in the world for fish and seafood. This is the ideal place to taste delicious sushis. The market opens at 5:30 AM and most of its business takes place before 9:00. We should get there as soon as possible in order to attend the buzzing of trade. Then, we will go to the sumo temple of Ryogoku Kokugikan, where we may attend sumo trainings. After our lunch, we will visit the Buddhist temples of Asakusa and Senso-Ji. Day 4 08/10 Departure from Tokyo to Nagoya (350km) By Hikari train: 110 minutes or Kodama train: 180 minutes. Visit of Nagoya Castle (approx. €5) or the Nagoya museum of Sciences which has the largest planetarium in the world (last visitors accepted at 16:30. Entrance €8) Stay in 3 star hotel MyStays (€36 for a double room €45 for a twin room). Day 5 09/10 Departure from Nagoya to Osaka Approx. 2 hours by train. For the first day, we can visit the castle of Osaka built in the16th century, and its park featuring numerous monuments; or we can visit the Osaka aquarium which is one of the largest in Japan (entrance €20). In the evening, we will take a stroll in the lively district of Dontonbori. We will spend the night in Toyoko Inn Hotel (double room €63, single room €54). Day 6 10/10 Nara On day 6, we will take a train to the little town of Nara which is less than 1 hour away from Osaka. Nara is renowned for its historical monuments and its deer parks. We will visit the Todai-Ji temple which contains the largest wooden building in the world (Daibutsu-Den). Then we will visit Nara Park and Heijo Palace. In the evening, we will return to Osaka. Day 7 11/10 AIUTA Conference First day of the AIUTA conference organised by the Osaka U3A and the Asia Pacific Alliance on the theme of “ageing while being active and in good health”. The subscription to the conference is €150. Day 8 12/10 Second day AIUTA Conference Day 9 13/10 Visit of Kyoto organised by Osaka’s U3A We will attend the Gion Matsuri festival which is the most popular festival in Japan. It takes place between October 7 and 11. Then we will get back to Osaka. Day 10 14/10 We will return to Kyoto (which is only 30mn away from Osaka by train) to further explore this city which contains lots of beauties such as Buddhist complex of Fushimi Inari-Taisha or the Golden pavilion. Return to Osaka in the evening. Day 11 15/10 Free Day in Osaka Enjoy your free day to do some shopping or explore other interesting sites of the city. Day 12 16/10 Flight back home It is time to say goodbye to Japan and go back home. International flights Flight ticket Toulouse-Tokyo and Osaka-Toulouse costs €724 with KLM. Others are rather cheap. You need a budget of approximately €50 for the visits. Subscription to the AIUTA Conference This subscription includes a participation to the conference, several maels as well as a one day trip to Kyoto. €150 Organisation and guiding This trip was designed by Jeremy Boer, assistant of Prof. François Vellas. He will take care of the hotel bookings if you wish to stay in the proposed hotels. The bookings will be done online for free. The payments must be done once at the hotels. The purchase of the plane tickets must be done by the participants themselves. Jeremy will be present during the trip as guide and organizer. In order to cover his expenditures, a contribution of €200 per person is required.
