Meet the 2015 Judges
Division 1 - Borders - Mr. Robert Bennett
I was born in Comber, Co. Down Northern Ireland,
also the birthplace also of Thomas Andrews Jr. of
Titanic fame. I am sixty-eight years of age and
married. I have three grown-up children and eleven
grandchildren. My grandfather bred birds, so I was
introduced myself at an early age. Fifty years ago I
started breeding and showing competitively and
acquired a substantial number of trophies.
I have made a lot of friends along the way,
worldwide and still maintain many of these great
friendships today.
All my working life I worked in engineering and the
last twenty years was spent helping to build airplanes. My other hobbies are
breeding and showing rare breeds of chickens and have had good success
with them as well. Gardening and the history of Ireland are also an
enjoyment of mine, especially the history of the town and area I live in.
I am honored to be asked to come to judge your show. I look forward to
building new friendships as well.
The best of luck for a successful show.
Division 2 - Glosters - Mr. Rob Wright
My involvement with birds started at an early stage as
my grandfather, father and his brothers all kept various
types of birds. I started at about seven years old. My father
had Border canaries and I decided to keep and exhibit
European birds. I took a break from birds till I married my
wife Anne in 1972. This was the year I saw my first Gloster
canary and was amazed at the crest on the corona,
although it bore little resemblance to crests we now have
on modern Glosters. I purchased my first three glosters
locally and these became the basis of my stock.
After a few years of keeping types of birds I decided to
specialize in Glosters. I had also persuaded my father to
keep Glosters and after a year exhibiting independently we became a partnership
1974. This coincided with a rapid expansion in the number of Gloster breeders in
the UK and novice breeders outnumbered champions three to one. We enjoyed
success from our first year as champions and continued to exhibit and judge
together till my father's death in 1995. Meanwhile my son had been exhibiting and
judging Fife canaries and it was decided we would form a partnership.
I started judging in 1976 with European birds and went on to judge Glosters from
1980 and Fifes in the late eighties. I have judged Glosters at both the English and
Scottish Nationals and most of the specialist clubs in the UK including the IGBA. My
international judging has taken me as far as Israel, France, Portugal, Belgium, Italy,
Canada, Seattle, Holland and Greece.
-33-
Division 3 - Type - Mr. Brian Johannson
I would like to thank the National Bird Show for inviting
me to judge in this year's show. At the show, I look forward
to meeting with all of you good people, where can we'll
discuss the birds, the show or the many other topics
related to the bird world.
Normally I do not like to tell tales about myself, however,
for over forty years I have been active in the world of birds
in one form or another. I started as a young boy in a
partnership keeping pigeons. As a young man I was into
foreign birds including European finches and zebra
finches. In a Partnership with my father-in-law, we won
best Zebra finch and best foreign pair in the 1973 National
Show in Vancouver. Shortly after that I tried my hand at
creating Mules between my European Finches and Gloster Canaries. I have also
kept, bred, and successful shown members of the Parrot families.
In 1975, I started my long love with the canary. I have kept, bred, and exhibited
Colour canaries, Yorkshires, Lancashires, Norwich, Scot fancy, Fife, Glosters, and
Borders. Currently, my aviary has the three breeds of Borders, Fife, and Glosters.
I have been successful on the Show Bench both in Canada and the USA for all
three types, having won Best of Breeds as well as Best in Shows. I am currently a
Canadian National Judge for the Avicultural Advancement Council of Canada
Division 4 - Old Varieties - Mrs. Deborah Eaton
It is an honor to have been chosen to judge the Old
Varieties division on the return of the National to
Chicago. I have been a longtime member and exhibitor
of this great show since the early 1980's. Breeding
various types of canaries has been a joy in my life that
has brought many great friends and memories to my
heart. The National has always had a tradition of
mentoring new exhibitors and welcoming them to our
show. A tradition that is worth continuing on, that is how
it began for me.
Animals, furred, and feathered of all varieties are a
part of my life. Foremost are my American Quarter
Horses and my birds. Birds of all types; Old Variety
Canaries, Type Canaries, and Softbills are my favorites.
My husband Carl and I have dogs, cats, parrots, chickens, peafowl, and horses.
We have bred, shown, exhibited and loved each and every one of them. My real-life
day job involves wearing many hats, working in a family practice doctor's office and
our own business in steel construction.
I serve on the National Cage Bird Show, Inc. Board of Directors, many years as
secretary-treasurer of the Old Varieties Canary Association, and the Canary Finch
Society in my home town of Houston, Texas. This year's NBS show enters a new
season of great changes for the show. I look forward to the show, my friends and
enjoying the high point of show season.
-34-
Division 5 - Hartz - Mr. Jim Warren
I began raising canaries in 1981. In March of 1982 I
tragically lost all my birds in a fire. A member of our
local bird club, Ray Havens offered me a pair of Red
Factor canaries to get me back into birds. That was the
basis of by stock. I then began showing and I have
been showing Canaries since 1993.
I enjoy attending the shows and breeding Canaries. I
have raised Colorbred, Type and Old Variety Canaries
and I have also raised Budgies, Finches, and Pigeons.
I am currently raising Borders, Fifes, Hartz and a
single pair of Red Factor Canaries.
I attended my first National Bird Show in Oklahoma
City, Oklahoma with Ray Havens. I have enjoyed all
the NBS shows I have attended, meeting new people, seeing friends from past
shows and learning so much from other breeders.
I consider it an honor to be selected by the NBS membership to be the
Division 5 Hartz Canary judge for the NBS show this year. I wish all of the
exhibitors the best of luck and welcome visitors and new exhibitors alike. Best
of luck to all and may you all have safe travels home after the show.
Division 6 - Fife Fancy Canary - Mrs. Regina McCarthy
My attraction for canaries and finches began in early
childhood, in my homeland, Sao Paulo, Brazil. Breeding
canaries was my hobby for many years prior to my
arrival in the United States in 1971. After arriving in this
country I became involved again with birds and joined
various clubs.
My great satisfaction in this hobby is the pleasure and
honor I feel when I am selected to judge any of the Type
canaries. I have been invited to judge shows all over this
country as well as in Canada, Mexico and Belgium.
In addition to being a member of the National Bird
Show, I am a member of many other clubs in the USA,
Canada and Europe. I have served clubs in the position
of secretary, treasurer, trustee, secretary/treasurer, panel of judge's chairperson
and show manager.
During my years of breeding and exhibiting Fifes and Glosters, I realized that not
all birds drink freely from the external show cage drinkers. I developed the Mini
Drinker which, while originally intended for the Gloster show cage, to my great
satisfaction has gained widespread popularity and is now in use for many breeds of
birds.
I have been pleased with the success of my birds whenever they have been
exhibited and have most appreciated the many wonderful friends I have made as a
result of my interest in canaries. I am honored once again to judge and to select the
best diminutive, poised and balanced Fife canary for their worthy status awards at
the 67th National Cage Bird Show in St. Charles.
-35-
Division 7 - Staffords - Mrs. Barbara Rosario
This year I am very pleased to have the honor of
judging the Stafford Division at the National Bird Show.
This will be my second time judging this Division at the
NBS.
At the 1996 National in Dearborn, Michigan, both
Harold Sodamann and Mark Whiteaker introduced
the Stafford canary to the National Bird Show by
displaying a few birds in show cages at the entrance of
the show hall. This was the great introduction of this
canary to our show.
Over the subsequent years many dedicated people
lent their efforts to furthering the interest in this breed.
Their work culminated with the Stafford canaries being
granted divisional status in 2008 at the NCBS in Lansing, Michigan.
It will be my pleasure to officiate at the show bench at this year’s NBS in St.
Charles. I also want to congratulate the all the Stafford canary exhibitors on their
success and will enjoy reviewing each exhibited bird and judging it to the Stafford
standard.
Division 8 - Lipochrome Colorbred - Mr. Claudio Gato
I am a father of four and a grandfather to three. I have
been raising canary since I was twelve years old. I won
my first show in 1976 under Gino Abbate with a red
lipochrome intensive. I have won seven
Kellogg/Higgins. I have judged many shows in North
America and I have been to Italy many times to see
shows and visit breeders there. The thing that I enjoy
about this hobby first is doing it with my dad, then the
competition, and the many friends you make along the
way, and those friendships are everlasting.
-36-
Division 9 - Melanin Classic - Mr. Albert Silva
For as long as I can remember, we have always
had some kind of animal at home. I have always
been a big animal lover, especially birds and dogs.
Having grown up with as many as ten different types
of pets at one time, it is with no surprise that my
hobby as a grown man has involved animals. All of
my family are animal lovers as well. I currently live in
California with my wife, Hazel, and twin daughters.
We breed and show Color Breed canaries and,
through good fortune and hard work, we have done
very well at the show bench. We have won multiple
awards throughout the states in all major and most
competitive shows, including multiple National titles at
National Cage Bird Show, both Kellogg and Higgins
awards, as well and the coveted Pat Scannell award for best all around exhibit.
I must confess that none of my accomplishments would have been possible
without the fortune of having friends both here and abroad who were willing to
share their expertise. Therefore, I believe that if you want to learn, join and
support your local clubs and you will be amazed at the knowledge you will gain.
It is a great pleasure to judge the 67th National Bird Show, a place where
good friends meet. See you all soon at Pheasant Run.
Division 10 - Melanin New Color - Mr. Carmelo Taibi
I was born in Toronto, Ontario, moved to Sicily, Italy when
I was four years old and returned to Toronto at the age of
eighteen. While in Italy, I kept a few canaries, but it was
not until twelve years ago that I fell in love with raising,
breeding, showing and learning about Lipochrome
canaries, Melanin canaries and New Colour canaries.
I have been a member of the Canadian Association of
Colourbred Canaries (CACC) since 2003, and have had
the opportunity to attend many North American shows. In
2008, I had the pleasure of going to Reggio, Italy, to see
the Italian National Bird Show, and in 2010, I attended the
Belgium Colourbred Canary Show; both were wonderful
experiences for me. I was the winner of the 2010 Higgins
trophy for New Colour canaries.
I am thankful for all of my teachers from Canada, the United States and Europe for
sharing their passion for canaries with me and cultivating my interest in Colourbred
canaries. In 2012, I became a certified National Colorbred Association judge.
I am honored for being selected to judge the Melanin New Colour Division at the
2015 National Cage Bird Show in Chicago, Illinois. I am looking forward to seeing old
friends and meeting new breeders.
-37-
Division 11 - Finches & Softbills - Mr. Clarence Culwell
I have been raising birds since about 1950. I
originally started with American Parakeets, which I
bred for several years. Later, a pair of Zebra finches
were added which really caught my interest and has
been a priority ever since. Over the years I have also
kept Cockatiels, Love Birds, Senegals, Conures,
Parrotlets, Cockatoos and other miscellaneous birds.
After keeping birds for some years, I started
showing my birds and enjoyed the competition and
friendships that I made at the shows. Some of my
dearest friends are friends that I have made in the bird
world.
I started judging birds after the encouragement I
received from many people and fellow exhibitors. I am
a Panel Judge for National Finch and Softbill Society, National Cockatiel Society,
and North American Parrot Society. Over my extensive judging career, I have
judged many shows across the country, including the National Cage Bird Show a
few times.
I am the judge's panel chairman for North American Parrot Society. I am currently
a director for the National Cage Bird Show and currently serving the membership
as the treasurer.
I am truly honored to be selected to preside of the Finch division. It is a highlight of
my judging career. I would like to wish the National Bird Show a very succesful
Division 12 - Parrots - Mr. Jim Heffernan
I am a father of six, one boy and five girls. I have been
keeping birds for over thirty years starting at the age
of twelve with a Zebra Finch which was closely followed by
a Society finch. Today they still remain my two favorite
finches. I was a founding member and judge of the Irish
ZFS and Irish foreign bird club. I became a judge in
Ireland at age 20 and judged most of the large shows
there, some several times. I moved to the USA eighteen
years ago and have been judging here in the USA and
Canada for several years. I look forward to meeting old
and making new friends.
-38-
Division 13 - Rare / Eyering Lovebirds - Mr. Mike Miller
Love Birds have been very rewarding to me since my
engagement with them in the 1970's. I am honored to be
asked for the third time to judge the heralded NBS.
Since I became a judge in 1990, I have judged shows
from the east to the west coast in the USA and have had
the pleasure of judging the great birds in beautiful Puerto
Rico for the past several years. It has been an honor to
judge at two AFA annual conventions recently as well as
winning a BIS at one of them in Raleigh. I have also had
the pleasure of winning the Love Bird division at the NBS
several years ago. Additionally, I have had the privilege of
holding the Chairman's position in the African Love Bird Society for the past several
years as well as being on the select committee in the 1980's that defined the
Fischer's and Masked species for our exhibitors. The most significant
accomplishment of all this is the wonderful like-minded bird people I have
befriended and all the beautiful birds I have enjoyed seeing and judging. My time
spent in our hobby has been an irreplaceable part of my life.
Best of luck to everyone’s breeding programs. Good Luck to all the Exhibitors. I
wish the best for NBS and their show in St. Charles.
Division 14 - Peachfaced Lovebirds - Mrs. Janet Landvater
I'm from Hershey, Pennsylvania, and work as a self
employed Hair Stylist. I've been married for fifty years to
my husband Jim who raises exotic pheasants, ducks &
quail. We have two children Jim Jr, Brenda and two
granddaughters Hannah 21 and Rebecca 18.
Due of my husbands interest in exotic pheasants I
became interested in cage birds and asked for a pair of
Finches for my birthday in 1988. My collection soon grew
to include, Lovebirds, Cockatiels, Cockatoos and a pair of
African Grey's. I soon settled into breeding all Lovebirds,
besides breeding the Peachfaced Lovebirds I also bred
some of the rare species of Lovebirds the Abyssinian and Madagascar.
My first show that I attended was the Chester Cage Bird Club in 1988 and
immediately became hooked on exhibiting. The next year I started showing my
lovebirds and cockatiels. In 1991 I attended my first National Cage Bird Show in
Dearborn, Mi. and won my first Kellogg in New Orleans, La. with a Madagascar and
again in San Juan, PR. with a Male Abyssinian.
I am a member of the African Lovebird Society and also serve as a regional
director, a panel judge since 1995, and I am currently serving as ALBS affiliation's &
awards chairperson.
I''m an honorary member of the Chester County Bird Club in PA, and a founding
member of the Northeastern Lovebird Exhibitors Assoc. I have judged at two
National Cage Bird Shows one in 2002 where I judged the Lovebird Rare & Eyering
Division held in Santa Clara, CA, and at the 2007 National where I judged the
Lovebird Peachfaced Division in Denver, Co.
I feel honored to have been chosen to judge the Peachfaced division at another
National. I look forward to seeing the results of everyone's breeding programs.
Good Luck to all the Exhibitors.
-39-
Division 15 - Cockatiels - Mr. Royce Irwin
Like so many of my fellow bird fanciers, I started with just
one bird in 1984. It was a Cockatiel that my son received
when he was sixteen years old and the man who gave it to
him told him about breeding and showing birds. Naturally,
we needed a second bird to start having chicks so that is
where my love for birds sprouted wings.
We joined our local bird club and found other birds to join
our aviary including Budgies. My first national organization
to join was the American Cockatiel Society and my first
National Cage Bird Show was in Denver in 1997.
I achieved judge status in ACS many years ago but
changed to the National Cockatiel Society in 1997. I am
qualified in judging parrots through the North American Parrot Society.
At this time, we have Cockatiels, Budgies, Finches and Bourke Parakeets but
have been the most successful in breeding and exhibiting Cockatiels .
My first opportunity to judge the National was in Puerto Rico in 2000 and I have
been privileged to judge in Canada, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and all of the local
shows in Texas. I truly enjoy the challenge in competition and have had the joy if
seeing some beautiful exotic birds and I always enjoy seeing new breeders win
spots on the Top Benches.
Thank you for this opportunity and good luck to all our exhibitors in
Chicago.
Division 16 - American Singers - Mr. Tom Yang
Tom was born in Thailand and raised in France. In 1993,
Tom moved to the United States where he and his wife
Emily currently reside with their children outside of Detroit,
Michigan.
Tom’s interest in birds began at a very early age when he
started raising Canaries. His fascination, curiosity, and
passion for the fancy continued to increase as he grew
older.
Tom was first introduced to the American Singer Fancy in
2003 and today is an active and valued member of his local
club, DRAGON Chapter 22 of the American Singers Club.
He has served DRAGON as the show manager for the club’s annual Song Trials
for the past ten years. Tom has also previously served the National ASC club as
2nd vice president and as a nominator. In addition to serving his local ASC Club
and the National ASC Club, Tom became an accredited ASC judge, received his
judging card in 2007, and immediately began judging ASC sanctioned shows
throughout North America. Tom has a reputation for being a well trained,
devoted, and scrupulously honest judge. Over the years, Tom has enjoyed the
camaraderie of other enthusiasts who share his love for the American Singer
Canary.
Tom is very honored to judge the American Singer Canary division at this year’s
esteemed 67th National Bird Show in St. Charles, Illinois. He thanks everyone
for the opportunity to do so, and he's looking forward to seeing everyone there.
Good luck to all…..
-40-
Division 17 - Rollers - Mr. Almin Omic
I was born in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Southeastern
Europe. In 1995, at the age of nineteen, I moved to the
United States and have lived there since.
My family always had different kinds of birds ever since I
was little. I fell in love with German Roller canary song
at a young age and always dreamed of raising them
seriously. Finally, in the early 2000s I located some
German Rollers and since then I have been an active
member of a number of clubs, both locally and
internationally.
In 2013 I became an accredited judge of the Central
States Roller Canary Breeders Association.
Currently I am serving as vice president and treasurer of
one of the larger roller canary clubs the Northwest Roller Canary Club of Seattle,
Washington.
I am always happy to share my roller experiences and help breeders recognize
the various Roller Tours.
I appreciate the NBS members selecting me to judge and wish you a great show.
Division 18 - Spanish Timbrados - Mr. Eider Ferreira
I was born in Havana, Cuba. I am forty-one
years old and moved to the United States in
1991. I always kept cage birds throughout my
childhood. I started with several varieties of
Canaries and wild Finches from Cuba, however, I
have always been amazed by Songbirds such as
the Cuban Nightingale, the Mockingbird, and
Song canaries.
It was back in 1998 when I heard the Spanish
Timbrado for the first time and immediately fell in
love with its cheerful, bright, and metallic song. I
have ever since dedicated only to breeding and
showing the Spanish Timbrado.
I became a Spanish federation of Ornithology (F.O.E.) judge in Spain
in 2006, and judged at the National Bird Show 2006 in Chicago, in San
Juan Puerto Rico, and side by side with senior judges in Spain.
It is an honor to have been nominated and selected again to judge the
2015 National Bird Show in Chicago and look forward to seeing you all.
Good luck everyone!

DIVISION 1 - BORDER FANCY CANARIES
The North American Border Club Standard of Excellence
The grand essentials of the Border Fancy
Canary are type and quality. Without these
all other aspects are useless. The general
appearance is that of a clean cut, lightly
made compact, proportional, close
feathered Canary showing no tendency to
heaviness, roughness, or dullness, but
giving the impression of fine quality and
symmetry throughout.
HEAD & NECK 10 points. Head wellrounded and neat when viewed from any
angle, beak fine, eyes clear and positioned
to rest on an imaginary line as an extension
to the line between the upper and lower
mandible of the beak, very slightly
forward of the central point of the head.
Neck rather fine, in keeping with the head
and flowing smoothly into the body lines
and of a sufficient length to give a free,
jaunty look to the head carriage.
BODY 15 points. Well filled and nicely rounded running in a smooth
downward curve from the gently, smooth rise of the shoulders to the point of
the tail. The chest is also nicely rounded, but not heavy. The line of the curve to
the root of the tail always being downward. Viewed from above and behind the
body outline should be symmetrically pear shaped.
WINGS 10 points. Compact and carried close to the body, covering the back
with primary and secondary flight feathers meeting at the tips. Out flight tips to
meet at the root of the tail. Primaries and secondaries to be pointed.
LEGS & FEET 5 points. Legs of medium length and showing a little thigh.
The legs should be fine yet in harmony with the size of the bird and allowing it
to adopt a gay, jaunty stance. Feet in keeping with the legs, both to be clean and
without blemish.
PLUMAGE 10 points. Close, firm and fine quality, presenting a smooth,
silken, glossy appearance, free from browiness, frill or roughness.
TAIL 5 points. Close packed and narrow, being nicely rounded and well
filled in at the root.
POSITION & CARRIAGE 15 points. Semi-erect standing at an angle of
about 60 degrees. Gay and jaunty with a full poise of the head.
COLOR 15 points. Rich, soft and pure, as level in tint as possible throughout
but extreme depth and hardness such as color feeding gives, are debarred. Any
exhibit being color fed will be disqualified.
SIZE 5 points. The ideal length from the top of the head to the tip of the tail
is approximately five and three quarters (5-3/4) inches, length should be in
proportion and balance with other features of the bird.
HEALTH 10 points. Condition and cleanliness shall have due weight.

At any National Show where 100 or more Norwich are
benched, ANS will award $300 to the owner of the Best

DIVISION 4 – OLD VARIETIES (cont’d)
OLD CRESTED AND CREST BRED VARIETIES
STANDARD
The standard of perfection for the breed, as laid down by the Crested
Canary Club, is as follows: Size and formation of crest shall be the first
consideration. A crest cannot be too large. It should consist of an
abundance of broad, long and veiny feathers evenly radiated from a small
center well over eyes, beak and poll. A good crest may be flat if well filled
in at the back and without splits, but a drooping or weeping crest shall have
preference. The body should in shape resemble that of a bullfinch
possessing substance in proportion to its length with a broad back, nicely
arched, full and well circled chest, tail short and narrow wings not
extending beyond root of tail, nor crossed at tips, but fitting closely to the
body. The neck should be full and the beak short. The bird should stand
well across the perch on short legs, with thighs and hocks well set back.
The Crest-bred should possess a body as above described. The head should
be large and round broad at every part, with a small beak and an abundance
of long, broad feathers commencing at entrance of beak, continuing over
the crown and flowing well down the poll and should be well browed. In a
good Crest-bred the feathers of the crown when turned over should reach
the end of the beak, the heavy brow should give the bird a sulky appearance
without brushing. When two or more birds are of equal merit in crest or
head properties the smaller bird shall take precedence, if it is of the correct
type, the Club recognizing it to be more difficult to obtain, but no
restriction whatever is placed on the length of the bird. Quality of feather
and high condition to have due weight.

DIVISION 15 – COCKATIELS
The National Cockatiel Society welcomes you to this Cockatiel specialty show. The
society was organized to meet the growing needs of breeders and exhibitors and to allow
them to have a voice in the Society and in the direction of the Cockatiel's development. NCS
will accept any traceable closed band and recommends the use of any standard-type
Cockatiel show cage.
Visual Standard
The NCS Standard envisions a long, graceful bird of
good body substance and equal proportions. The
Cockatiel should measure 14 inches in length from the top
of the crown to the tip of the tail. In addition, the crest
should approach 3 inches in length. Proportionally, the
bird should measure equally in length from the top of the
crown to the vent, the top of the shoulder to the tip of the
wing, and from the vent to the tip of the tail.
The crest, as the Cockatiel's chief physical trademark,
should be full and showy, curving back gracefully, with
the longer filaments graduating evenly down towards the
shorter ones at the rear of the skull. The head should be
large and well-rounded without evidence of a “flat top”
either behind the crest or at the back of the skull (with
good width between) and sheltered by a pronounced
frontal browline, creating a proud, “hawklike”
appearance when viewed from the front. The bright
orange cheek patches should be round, well-colored, and
free of “bleeding” extraneous orange feathers elsewhere
on the face. The beak should be clean, tucked in and of
normal length. The lower mandible should be only partly
visible. The yellow face of adult males should be brightly
colored and without extraneous grey or orange feathers
(except for young males going through the moult) and
clearly contrast where it meets the main body feathers.
The bib should be deep. The neck, adding grace to the
form, should be neither too long nor too short, and
particularly evident when the bird is in an alert stance.
The Cockatiel is a sleek, stream-lined bird, yet full
bodied, showing good substance. When viewed from the
front (or back), a generous width across the chest and
shoulders in adults (particularly hens) should be evident.
The back should be straight, blending with the slender,
tapering abdomen. The wings should be large and wide,
held tightly, hugging the body with tips close to the tail,
without crossing or dropping. All flight feathers should be
present. The wing patch should approach ¾ of an inch in
width and be clear of extraneous dark feathers.

FOUNDED 1934
INCORPORATED 1943
HISTORY of the AMERICAN SINGER CLUB
The American Singer Club was founded in 1934 in Milton, MA., by a group of eight women
breeders. The first birds were exhibited in the Boston Show of that year. The name American
Singers was adopted by vote of the members after this first show.
This breed has been standardized and is the only AMERICAN bred Canary known as the
AMERICAN SINGER Border-Roller Type Songster. Many have called their birds American
Singers, but only birds bred by our plan are GENUINEAMERICAN SINGERS.
The members definitely adopted the method of breeding Border to roller in 1942, but this
same method was already in use by most of our members in 1935 on through the years, Our
Model and 100 Point Score sheet was accepted in 1943 along with instructions for Judges and
are used at all shows where AMERICAN SINGERS are shown; Only Official judges may be
used where theAmerican Singer Club INC., give patronage.
The CLUB was incorporated by donations from members in all states, but through the
efforts of BOSTON, MA. Chapter No. 2 we qualify under MA. laws as a nonprofit
organization.
Our SEAL was designed by Charles Radocy with the help of Mrs. Small, then President,
and by Mr. Lucius Armitagte. Out MODEL, was first designed by Mr. Welty and changed to the
present model by vote of the Members through the efforts of Chapter 2, Boston.
DEFINITION OF THE AMERICAN SINGER CANARY
The American Singer Canary is a Song Type Canary bred in the United States by a
systematic plan, known as the blending of Roller to Border Fancy over a period of
years to produce a Canary that has (1) an outstanding free harmonious song,
pleasing to the ear, nether too loud or too harsh, with plenty of VARIETY and (2) a
beautiful shape or type not over 5 3/4 inches long with tight feather that will please
the average home love of canaries

Judging the American Singer Canary Song
The song refers to freedom and rendition. The song of the American
Singer (AS) Canary should have the right amount of blending and balance of Roller
and Border to be pleasing to the ear. It is a musical sequence of notes and tours
naturally given, medium in volume, neither too loud nor too soft or monotonous
(with repetitive tours or overly sustained notes). It is a full song of the right quality,
with dynamic range, tone, strength, creativity, and great variety. Showmanship is
essential, but no exact song or tours are required. The American Singer canary has
an outstanding free and rich, harmonious song.
American Singer canaries are judged using a 100-point system. The
song is evaluated over a twenty (20) minute period, divided into two ten (10)
minute sessions. The first session is to judge Freedom; the second session is to
judge Rendition.
Ten percent of the score is Freedom, which is willingness to sing, ease
in starting, and performance, e.g., how quickly and frequently the bird sings. The
first ten minutes of judging counts the number of complete songs the bird sings.
Each song is worth one point until a maximum of ten (10) points is met. Ten full
songs within ten minutes is the judging standard. Freedom is important because an
excellentAmerican Singer Canary should sing on and off throughout the entire day.
Sixty percent of the score is Rendition which refers to the song as a
whole, the musical interpretation or presentation of song. The judge decides, “How
much is the song worth? What is its value?” Fault points are deducted if more than
six chop notes occur.
-174-
Judging the American Singer Song (cont’d)
Variety
Change in general song, intermixture, or succession of different
tours and notes pleasing to the ear.
Volume
Medium is desired, not too loud or too soft.
Length
The longer the total song the better.
Range
Capable of wide dynamic range, without becoming thin on the
high notes or muddy in the low range.
Tone
Pleasing tone is desired. No harsh or nasal notes.
Tempo
Delivery should be slow enough that the song can be understood.
Creativity
Changes the order of the tours, constantly surprises the listener.
Smoothness
Showmanship
Song should smoothly build up, then taper off, not cut off abruptly
or stick on one note for too long.
Bird should stand upright and proud at 45 degree angle while
singing, no roller “hoop” (horizontal stance).
Quality
Depth and richness of song notes.
Strength
Vigor shown in strong song, not necessarily loud, power
of endurance.
Twenty percent of the score is Confirmation which refers to a wellproportioned body and good, tight plumage. Color is not considered. This means

DIVISION 19 – YOUTH
Sponsor - John & Jane Muscato
Youth College Scholarship - Since 2001, the NCBS in partnership with
Higgins Premium Pet Foods, has awarded a $1,000 college scholarship to
the Youth Division exhibition winner.
Eligibility Requirements:
The participant must have completed the 6th grade.
Be present at the NCBS and comply with show catalog rules.
Complete separate entry forms for each general competition division.
Check the appropriate bird division for general competition on the form
and also check YOUTH DIVISION. Attach the general cage tag to the
left side of the cage. In addition attach a YOUTH IDENTIFICATION
RIBBON to the right side of the cage.
Turn in all entry sheets to the secretaries by Thursday evening of
the show.
Enter all birds by 7:00am on Friday of the show. Youth entries will
be included in the total division count of their respective divisions.
Youth will meet the Youth Division Coordinator at the NCBS Awards
table at 7am for a short meeting.
Show judges will begin judging youth division entries at 8:00 am on
Friday at their respective judging stands. Only one bird from a
division may qualify for the final scholarship judging.
Following the youth division judging, the steward will place all youth
birds in their designated classes for general competition. The youth
birds, in general competition, are eligible to advance based on merit
for division and other show awards.
The scholarship winner will be selected by the judges who had youth
entries in their division on Saturday immediately following the
Scannell judging. These judges will use a score card to rank the finalist.
A maximum of four scholarships may be won by any youth exhibitor. The
scholarship may be used at any fully accredited college or university
including community colleges, vocational schools, and technical
schools. The scholarship must be used at the first Fall enrollment
immediately following high school graduation. If a student accumulates
more than one scholarship, only one scholarship may be used per year.
Remaining scholarships must be used in consecutive years. Students must
notify the NCBS of their school enrollment and provide verification
from the school. The scholarship funds will then be paid directly to
the school for tuition, fees, and supplies.
