New YMCA in the works for Cassville
Charlea Mills
The Cassville YMCA is an
incredibly busy place most
days. With an increasing demand for the Cassville YMCA,
a new facility plan is in the
works with ground-breaking
optimally happening next
year. After a community meeting last Tuesday, November
3, the YMCA and a group of
community partners are making plans for a bigger facility to
meet the community’s changing needs.
Dove Haney, Cassville
YMCA Center Executive, said
that almost 180 people showed
up on Tuesday to voice their
opinions on how to make the
local YMCA better. She said,
“It was awesome. I was really
proud of how many people
came out. It really drove home
the point of a bigger or a new
facility for Cassville.”
Currently, the Cassville
YMCA offers up sports programs, an exercise area, different classes, after-school child

other games. It is a lot of activity for the small space that they
currently have. Haney said,
“At certain times of day, we
are maxed out at our capacity. There are a lot of programs
that we would like to offer that
we just can’t because we’re so
limited on space.”
She said the issues boil
down to one thing: space. “We
need to expand so that we can
better serve the community,”
Haney stated.
Currently, it is unknown
where the new facility will be
or when it will be completed.
The surveys that both YMCA
and community members
filled out will help them determine what features the
new facility will have to meet
needs. The surveys included
questions about what areas
people currently utilize most,
what they would like to see
and what would cause them to
join the YMCA if they aren’t
already members.
Some of the suggestions
made in surveys included a
bigger exercise area with more
equipment, a ninja warrior
training course, an indoor

A Monett man was arrested this week on three
different charges for allegedly having sex with an underage child. Dustin James
Briskey, 24, of Monett, is
charged with statutory rape
in the second degree, statutory sodomy in the second
degree, and endangering
the welfare of a child in the
first degree.
According to the affidavit of probable cause
by Barry County Sheriff ’s
Deputy Terry Meek, Briskey’s victim was a 14 year
old girl from Exeter. Meek
wrote that Briskey went to
the victim’s home in Exeter on Sunday, October
18, parked in the driveway
and had sexual intercourse

Christopher Paschall, the
man accused of murdering
the mother of his child, Casey
Brace, and the mother’s grandfather, Herbert Townsend, in
Washburn in January, is facing three new charges in Barry
County.
According to two entry
of appearances filed, Barry
County Prosecuting Attorney
Amy Boxx will be assisted by
Assistant Attorney Generals
Darrell L. Moore and Joshua
David Harrell in the case.
Moore filed an amended
felony complaint against Paschall on October 26 which
added two charges. Initially,
Boxx filed charges of murder
in the first degree, assault in
the first degree and armed
criminal action against Paschall in January. Judge Robert
Foulke issued a $1,000,000

to help pay for it.” They plan to
use community priorities and
needs to decide which equipment and features are the most
important.
According to the surveys
distributed during meeting,
the top requests included a
gym for basketball, volleyball, dodge ball and pickle
ball, an indoor walking track,
a group workout studio, expanded space for the cardio
and weight equipment and an
indoor pool.
Slightly less popular votes
included a game room, racquetball court, spin room,
locker rooms and showers, sauna, an expanded kids

will be for the YMCA to share
the results with the community partners putting the plan in
motion to work on the design.
Haney said they will, “work on
the design of the community
center designed expressly for
the needs of our community.”
Currently, multiple location sites are being discussed,
but no location has been chosen. Haney said that one thing
they are taking into consideration with a new location is
the proximity to the schools.
She said, “We have a lot of kids
who walk here after school,
and crossing [MO] 248 is
dangerous. So we are hoping
to find somewhere more centrally located.”
As the project progresses,
more information will be released.
The current YMCA location is on MO 248. The location for the new building has not been determined yet.

Words can’t express the extreme gratitude
we have for the out pouring of love and support
during my battle with Leukemia. Thank you to
everyone who was able to make it to the benefit, who
donated items for the silent auction, bake sale, dinner
and those who made monetary donations. We would
also like to thank Ridgley Baptist Church for the use of
the building and the entertainment; Bob Roper’s Horse

The kids also enjoyed the bounce house provided by

as God’s healing hand is what we need most. Everyone

Operation Shoe Box collection next week
With holiday supplies
already covering the store
shelves, individuals, families, churches and groups
in and around Cassville are
working to make Christmas
a reality for kids in need
around the world by filling
shoeboxes with toys, school
supplies, hygiene items and
notes of encouragement.
Especially during November, Operation Christmas
Child is moving into high
gear while Cassville-area
volunteers prepare to collect hundreds of gift-filled
shoeboxes during National
Collection Week, Nov. 16
through 23.
Anyone can drop off a
gift-filled shoebox to send
to a child overseas. On arrival, using whatever means
necessary, trucks, trains,
boats, bikes, and even elephants and camels, the
shoebox gifts will then be
hand-delivered to children
worldwide. For many children, this shoebox gift will
be the first gift they have
ever received.
Gifts can be dropped off
at the First Baptist Church
in Cassville at 602 West
Street Monday through
Sunday, Nov. 16 through
22, from noon to 5 p.m. and
Monday, Nov. 23, from 8
a.m. to noon. For more information, call (417) 8472965.
Empty shoeboxes can be
picked up at First Baptist
Cassville, along with a list
of gift ideas for boys and
girls.
Though the shoebox
gifts will often travel thousands of miles, using special
tracking technology, participants can follow their boxes online and discover the
country to which their gifts
will be delivered to children
in need. To register a shoebox gift, use the online donation form at samaritanspurse.org.
Operation
Christmas
Child has collected and
delivered more than 124
million shoebox gifts to
children in more than 150
countries since 1993, and
hopes to collect another
11 million gift-filled shoeboxes in 2015. Operation
Christmas Child is a project
of Samaritan’s Purse, an international Christian relief
and evangelism organization headed by Franklin
Graham.
For more information
about how to participate in
Operation Christmas Child,
call 417-847-2965 or visit

cash-only bond on the charges. Moore has since added an
additional murder in the first
degree charge, two counts of
armed criminal action, and
parental kidnapping. The assault charge has been dropped.
On Monday, January 5,
Paschall, 37, of Springdale,
Ark., allegedly showed up at
Townsend’s home where he
shot and killed Brace, 29, and
Townsend and kidnapped
two-year old Alli Paschall.
Later that day, Paschall was
taken into custody in Springdale, Ark., by law enforcement
without incident, and Alli was
found safe.
Alli has since been placed
in custody of family members.
Brace left behind two older
children, as well.
Paschall is still being held
in Arkansas where he was arrested, waiting extradition to
Missouri after his charges are
settled in Arkansas. His charges in Arkansas include possession of a firearm by certain
persons prohibited, possession
of drug paraphernalia, theft by
receiving, and violating terms
of a prior bond. Until Paschall’s charges are resolved in
Arkansas, he will not appear in
court for the murders.
In Barry County, Paschall is now charged with two
counts of murder in the first
degree, two counts of armed
criminal action, and parental
kidnapping.

Local volunteer coach Jim Turner fighting rare fungal infection
infection six times during the
course of his career.
Each day, Kim said they
seem to get more bad news.
Due to how caustic the antifungal is, Jim’s kidneys are
shutting down. The fungus
has eaten away at his sinus
cavity, his eye socket, and now
his brain.
Kim said, “The Chief medical doctor here is talking to
the Mayo Clinic and the other
places who have done these
studies on it. There are other
treatments, but they say they
won’t reach the brain.”
In the meantime, Kim, the
main breadwinner for their
family, is unable to work either of her two jobs as a registered nurse, and the family is
struggling.
To help out, community
members created a bank account for people to support
them.
Kim’s mother, Sandy Edwards, said, “We really appreciate how everyone is helping. This account has been
the only way to help them
pay their bills while Kim is up

Magician Marty Hahne,
of Ozark, will perform for
young readers at the Shell
Knob Branch Library on
Thursday, November 19, at
12:30 p.m.
Hahne, who performs at
about 50 libraries each year,
will be presenting an exciting
program entitled, “Reading is
Magic!” The 45-minute program features colorful magic,
comedy and lots of audience
participation. You never
know, a magical bunny rabbit may pop up at any time.
Along with all the fun, the
program will emphasize the
importance of reading and
the library.
Hahne is a full-time magician, performing approximately 300 shows each year.
He presents most of his shows
in schools, libraries and child
care centers. He also travels around the United States
teaching other magicians
how to entertain children.

Still experiencing stroke-like
symptoms, the local hospital
sent him to Freeman Hospital
in Joplin because he had become septic. It was then that
everything changed for the
worse.
Kim said, “They did every test and study. They did
an MRI and everything, and
they still didn’t know what
was going on.” With no diagnosable condition, Kim said,
“The ENT at Freeman pretty
much saved my husband’s life.
He took him into surgery, and
that’s then they found the fungal infection.”
Jim’s surgery went from
November 5 into the early
hours of November 6. As
soon as surgery was over, he
was flown by jet to the St.
Louis University Hospital.
Diagnosed with murcomycosis, an extremely rare
fungal infection behind Jim’s
eye, two more surgeries left
him without his right eye.
Kim said, “We were told that
most people lose their lives.”
The specialist at the hospital said that he has only

After being struck with
an incredibly rare illness, the
community is rallying support for Cassville resident
and longtime youth sports
supporter Jim Turner and his
family.
Jim Turner has a deep love
for sports. He’s spent most
of his life volunteering for
various programs, including
baseball, softball and basketball. He’s taken youth baseball
teams to countries all over
the world to play because it
is what he loves to do. His
wife, Kim, said, “It’s all volunteer, he doesn’t charge. He
just wants the youth to be as
strong as they can be.” Now,
Jim is using that strength to
fight an extremely rare infection.
Everything started on
October 11 when he was diagnosed with pneumonia
and put on antibiotics. After
ten days, Kim said that he
wasn’t getting any better. She
said, “We were still going to
the doctor twice a week, but
nothing was changing.”
Then, on October 26, Jim
had to be taken to the emergency room with stroke-like
symptoms. After a CAT scan,
the doctors said he hadn’t experienced a stroke, switched
his antibiotics and sent him
home. Finally, on October 31,
Jim has a seizure that caused

Cassville R-IV launches emergency system Purdy September Students of the Month
Cassville R-IV School
District will contract with
CrisisGo to offer a technology emergency response
system for Cassville Public
Schools. CrisisGo is a mobile emergency application
which will send a message
to school staff members’
phones, tablets or laptops in
the event of an emergency.
“Our number one concern is keeping our students
and staff safe at all times,”
stated Richard Asbill, Cassville School District Su-
perintendent. “Our crisis
management plans are fully
developed and up-to-date
and our staff is prepared to
respond in the case of a crisis; however, our plans are
pages long and CrisisGo is
tailored to make emergency
response information easily
accessible in a quick manner.”
CrisisGo gives administrators and teachers a twoway communication platform and securely stores
important emergency pre-
paredness plans and information such as checklists,
class rosters, call lists and
building maps.
“It will streamline each
response with the pieces
everyone needs in the event
of a specific emergency. For
instance, in the case of an
emergency, a teacher would
receive a message with stepby-step instructions on how
he or she should respond to
the crisis at hand,” stated Asbill.

Students from Cassville Middle and High School attended the 2015 Missouri Family, Career and Community Leaders of America Fall Leadership Conference October 18 through 19 at Tan-Tar-A Resort in Osage Beach. More than 1,100 FCCLA members,
advisors, and chaperones attended the conference. FCCLA students were able to choose from a variety of different sessions. Sunday
sessions included trainings on professionalism, networking, fundraising, careers, and communication. Monday sessions included
trainings for new members, chapter officers, regional officers, and general leadership training.
Trainings were performed by professional speakers from TRI Leadership Resources as well as Missouri FCCLA State Officers.
Members were inspired to help others and be a positive leader. Family, Career and Community Leaders of America is unique among
youth organizations because its programs are planned and run by members. It is the only Career and Technical Student Organization with the family as its central focus. Participation in FCCLA programs and activities helps members become strong leaders in
their families, careers, and communities.
The following Cassville FCCLA members attended the conference. From left to right, in the front row: Nikkia Lansdown, Kaitlyn Grayum, Coleman Hoppes, Willow Linton, Kya Kraft, Zac Acheson, Macy Barnett and Michaela Cotton. Back row: Laura
Stringer, Emily Sink, Megan Richter, Lindsey Wells, Jeremiah Pendleton, Opal Gouvian, Morgan Strode, and Daisy Olsen. Also in
attendance were FCCLA Advisors, Ann Ellis and Samantha Cosper.

Barry County Health Department September Food Service Report
The Health Department
divides food service code
violations into two categories: Priority and Core
items.
Priority items are more
likely than other violations
to contribute to food contamination or illness and/
or injury.
Core items, although
important to the overall hygiene of the establishment,
do not necessarily present an immediate threat to
food contamination or illness and/or injury.
A report for each establishment that is inspected
shows the number of priority items, along with a
short statement as to the
nature of the violations.
The report also shows the
number of core items, but
doesn’t list the nature of
those violations.

Purdy students to present play Nov. 13, 14 Arvest, Cassville donate to food pantry
Purdy’s cast of Where’s Charley is pictured above, from left to right: Kaden Propps as Charley
Wykeham; Mikala Fletcher as Amy Spettigue; Gannon Clevenger as Jack Chesney; and Katie Real
as Kitty Verdun.
However, his plans do not
include attracting the attention of male admirers in his
“Aunt Donna” attire, including Charley’s dad! Hilarity
ensues as Charley attempts
to negotiate his dual identities while winning the heart
of the woman he loves.”
According to Purdy Vocal Music Director Lauren
Lee, two evening performances are scheduled, with
opening night on Friday,
November 13, and an encore
performance on Saturday,
November 14. Both performances will be held in the
Purdy Elementary Gym at 7
p.m., and admission is free.
Lee noted, “Where’s Charley
offers audience members of
all ages a prime opportunity
to stroll through a straightlaced, yet simple time of
college romance. Join us
for side-splitting comic encounters, as well as tender
moments that will leave you
longing for the thrill that
only young love can bring.”

Purdy High School junior Kaden Propps will take
the stage as Charley Wykeham, in Purdy High School’s
production of the hit Broadway musical “Where’s Charley?”, a musical glimpse
of Victorian social lunacy
played out on a college
campus. Joined by co-stars
Gannon Clevenger, Katie
Real, Mikala Fletcher and a
troupe of talented supporting cast members, Propps
promises a rollicking adventure on the 1892 Oxford
University Campus. “My
character, Charley, and his
roommate, Jack Chesney,
find themselves in a bit of a
pickle when Charley’s Brazilian aunt, Donna Lucia,
fails to show up for a visit
and a chaperone gig for a
lunch date with our love interests. Charley takes one for
the team and dons a dress
to pose as his aunt so the
party can go on as planned.
In an initiative to help the Cassville Community Food Pantry, Arvest Bank offered up a pizza party
to the class in the Cassville Middle School who brought the most non-perishable food items to donate
to the pantry. The winning class
was Mrs. Ketchum’s 7th grade
math class.
