Aloha and welcome to ART MAUl '92, the 14th
annual exhibition of juried works by Maui County's finest
artists.
I hope your visit to the show evokes the range of
emotions that each artist strives to achieve from the
viewing public. If it does, we've accomplished what we've
set out to do: encourage the artists to reach for excellence
and creativity outside the pressures of the marketplace,
and then present the highest quality of artwork to the
Maui community in hopes our understanding and
appreciation of art increases each year.
As chairman of ART MAUl '92, I congratulate the
artists, thank Macario Pascual for the generous sharing of
his work, and extend a special mahalo nui loa to the people
that have made this year's show possible.

1992 Poster Artist - Macario Pascual
Macario Pascual, born November 26, 1956, in the Ilocos Norte
region of the Philippines. immigrated to Hawaii at the age of five
with his mother. They joined his father who came earlier to work for
the sugar plantation.
At the age of thirteen. he became the first and youngest
recipient of the Lahaina Arts Society Art Scholarship. In 1974, he
was awarded his first solo exhibition by the Society while still a
senior in high school. From 1974-79, Pascual studied art at the
University of Hawaii on an art and tennis scholarship, graduating
with a BFA degree in design.
Over the years. Pascual has become well-known in the islands
for his series of paintings on Hawaii's plantations, its workers. and
the surrounding landscapes. His understanding and sensitivity to the
media and the subjects has led to several solo exhibitions and
important commissions. Among them have been the State of Hawaii
for the 75th Filipino Anniversary Commemoration in 1981 and
Alexander & Baldwin. Inc. for their Centennial in 1982.
He has also been accepted in juried shows. winning awards
locally and nationally. His painting, "Hana Ko IV", received a top
award in oil painting in the prestigious National Exhibition of
Contemporary Realism in Springfield, Massachusetts. In 1983, one of
his original oils was included in the Chautauqua National Exhibition
of American Art in New York. His entry was one of only 68 pieces

from the 2.600 entries. Recently. Pascual was among seventeen
artists from across the country invited to participate in a group show
in San Francisco. The exhibit was sponsored by Art Programs. Inc. of
San Francisco and Los Angeles. the Equitable Life Assurance Society
of the United States and Southern Pacific Land Company.
In addition. he has received media recognition in several Hawaii
and California publications induding the recently published Artists
of Maw book. considered by many to be the "Who's Who" of Maui
artists. Furthermore. Pascual has been the focus of attention for
Hawaii Public Television's "Spectrum", a program dedicated to the
arts and culture of Hawaii.
His paintings are now in the collection of the State Foundation
on Culture and the Arts, Alexander & Baldwin. Inc., Senator Daniel
Inouye. Baldwin-Pacific Corporation. Malcolm MacNaughton of
Castle & Cooke. and many others here and abroad.

Art Maui 1992 Juror - James Jensen
Born in Wisconsin, James Jensen attended the
University of Wisconsin-Madison, receiving a B.A. degree
in Art History in 1971. After two years of graduate study
in art history, he enrolled in the Arts Administration
program of the Graduate School of Business at the
University of Wisconsin, receiving an M.A. degree. He
arrived in Hawaii from Wisconsin in 1976 to assume a
position as administrative assistant to the director of the
Honolulu Academy of Arts. He worked at the Academy
for 15 years, serving as Assistant Curator and then Curator
of Western Art from 1979 to 1991. In April of 1991 he
became Associate Director for Exhibitions and Collections
at The Contemporary Museum in Honolulu.

Hui No' eau. The tea-rose stucco house offers a gracious
setting for the Hui's gallery, gift shop, administrative
offices, classrooms, jewelry and photography studios along
with residences for visiting instructors. Also located on
the property are the picturesque stables which now serve
as a thriving ceramics studio, and a large carriage house
which is home to the Hui's printmaking and papermaking
departments. The lower floor of the carriage house offers
additional classroom space for children's art programs.
Hui No'eau sponsored over 200 programs in 1991 for
established, as well as emerging, Maui artists. Studio
classes in painting, drawing, ceramics, fiber arts, jewelry,
photography, design, sculpture, printmaking, papermaking,
Hawaiian and ethnic studies were augmented by 12
exhibits and 24 lectures with distinguished visiting artists
from around the world.
Hui No' eau is open to the public daily throughout the
year.
Membership dues are an important source of
support for all programs and facilities at the Hui.

Art Maui 1992 Symposium
The art symposium has served as the kick-off for Art Maui for
many years. It was designed to engage and stimulate the artist and
the public in art dialogue.
The subject of this year's symposium was "The Art World
Outside the Gallery". It was held at the Hui No'eau Visual Arts
Center on February 22, 1992 from 1: 00 to 4: 00 p.m. A round table
discussion and lively question and answer period was held with the
following panelists:
Marcia Godinez, art writer and consultant
David Graves, painter, print-maker and president of the Hui
No'eau print-making department
Jay Jensen, Associate Director for Exhibitions and Collections
at the Contemporary Museum in Honolulu
David Ulrich, Executive Director of the Hui No' eau Visual
Arts Center and photographer
Sidney Yee, artist and art teacher at Lahainaluna High School

State Foundation on Culture and the Arts
Each year, the State Found11tion on Culture and the Arts
(SFCA) organizes an Acquisition A ward Selection Committee (AASC)
to visit Art Maui prior to the opening of the show. The committee is
responsible for selecting and recommending to the SFCA board
outstanding works of art that should be acquired for the Art in
Public Places Relocatable Collection. The AASC is comprised of
SFCA 's board and staff and volunteer consultants who are qualified
visual art professionals.
The State Foundation on Culture and the Arts was established by the
Hawaii State Legislature in 1965 as the official arts agency of the State of
Hawaii. In 1967. the State's role as patron of the arts was further
augmented by Act 298. the "Art-in-State Buildings Law". This legislation
mandated that one percent of appropriations for the original construction of
any State building be set aside for the acquisition of works of art.
The Art in Public Places Program of the State Foundation expends
these funds for the purchases of completed, portable works of art, and for
the commissioning of artists for works of art to be placed at specific
locations.
Works of art acquired for the State' s public art collection are
displayed in state offices and buildings throughout Hawaii. These works of
art are selected for purchase from juried exhibitions, galleries and artists'
studios by the Acquisition Award Selection Committee made up of State
Foundation board members, staff and qualified visual arts consultants.
Commissions which are major works installed as an integral part of a
structure or near a building, are awarded by the SFCA board from a list of
three artists selected by an Art Advisory Committee composed of the
building's officials, architects, clientele and the near community.
The objectives of the Arts in Public Places Program are:
· To enhance the environmental quality of public buildings and spaces
throughout the State for the enjoyment and enrichment of the public;
· To cultivate the public's awareness, understanding, and appreciation
of visual arts in all media, styles and techniques;
· To contribute to the development and recognition of a professional
artistic community;
· To acquire, interpret, preserve, and display works of art expressive
of the Hawaiian Islands, the multi-cultural heritages of its people, and the
various creative interests of its artists.
