SPOTLIGHT ON SABERS
MAUI HIGH SCHOOL

Principal’s Message
As we recover from a very busy and eventful fall season, I want to thank all of you
who contributed to make the Homecoming and 40th anniversary celebration (from
Oct. 17-23) one of the most memorable and historic weeks for Maui High School.
The week began with Monday's Homecoming kick-off assembly and the many
spirited activities coordinated by our Student Government. I may be prejudiced, but
I personally think the highlight was our faculty lip synch dance troop who should
have won first place. Congratulations to all grade levels for their active
participation!
On Thursday night, our first Maui High Hall of Honor Banquet with many alumni
from the old and current campus in attendance was simply amazing.
On Friday, the extraordinary Saber Family Fun Night with over a thousand in attendance created a
buzz in our community, based on the many positive comments received.
Saturday started with our Boys’ Cross Country Team winning the MIL Championship in a dominating
fashion and our football team's gutsy performance that evening at the Homecoming game. Our
Marching Band's brilliant half-time performance that night to Sunday's inaugural Athletic Fundraiser
Golf Tournament made it a week that placed our school on the forefront as the best high school on
Maui.
All of this wouldn't have been possible without everyone working together. We have a great team
here at Maui High and in the community. I know that when we put our collective efforts together, we
can and will accomplish many more great things.

SIDELINE SUPPORTERS: DECA
members show their spirit during the
Homecoming game.
HALFTIME SHOW: The marching
band and color guards impress the
crowd with their moves.
HALL OF HONOR BANQUET

This year’s Homecoming week featured a Hall of Honor Banquet that brought
together alumni and friends from both the old and new Maui High Schools. Banquet
Committee members (MHS graduation year) Gil Keith-Agaran (1980), Grant Chun
(1979), Alfredo Evangelista (1976), Mike Molina (1978), June Ginoza Nouchi
(1979), and Carol Yamasaki Reimann (1979) are to be commended for spearheading this effort, which
anticipates the school’s 100th anniversary in 2013.
Forty years ago, Maui High School moved from its Hamakuapoko location to 660 South Lono Avenue in
Kahului. Former Principal Calvin Yamamoto astounded the audience by recalling the staff managed to
move within ten days in December, 1971. Mayor Alan Arakawa, Class of 1969, shared his proclamation
that declared October 17-23, 2011 to be Maui High School Week.
The program featured an eleven-minute student-produced retrospective video that combined memories of
these alumni: Grant Chun, ’79; Janyce Omura, ’76; Alan Arakawa, ’69; Linda Lubera, ’62; Jackie
Guillermo, ’65; Gil Keith-Agaran, ’80; Bill Tavares, ’39 and Janet Kitagawa Moore, ’52. An overview of
the school’s current Career Pathways programs showed teachers and students actively engaged in learning.
Kudos to Media Instructor Clint Gima and his students for devoting endless hours of research and
videotaping to this keepsake project!
A highlight of the evening was the presentation of awards. The November 2, 2011 issue of the Maui News
had a detailed article, which can be found in the news section of our school’s website at mauihigh.org. The
photo below is taken from that article.

Friday, Oct. 21: The second annual Saber Family Fun Night featured activities
for all ages: pony rides, jumping castle, games, live entertainment, Guitar
Hero, CTE and UH Maui College displays, pep rally and a variety of food
booths to satisfy all tastes. It was a successful fundraiser for all clubs, band
and athletic groups.
