2014 SPRING EDITION IN THIS ISSUE Administrative Changes Announced Congratulations to our 2014 Graduates Spring Athletics in Review Congratulations to Athletes Playing at the Next Level GHSA 2014 Cooperative Spirit Sportsmanship Award New Elementary School Principal Facility Master Plan Update Upcoming Events HCA Re-Accreditation a Success HCA’s Store - The Lion’s Den Administrative Changes Announced Ethel Wynn named Associate Headmaster Tim Hillen, HCA Headmaster, recently announced that Ethel Wynn will be assuming the position of Associate Headmaster. In this new administrative capacity, Mrs. Wynn will be assigned very specific leadership tasks. Hillen explained that with the recent resignation of Dr. Tim Anderson as High School Principal, attempting to hire a person at this time from outside the current employee community was simply not an option. Therefore, he has created a High School Leadership Team (HSLT) as the administrative entity to run high school affairs. Since that team needs strong leadership, experience, and a clear understanding of the HCA community, one of the first major functions of Wynn’s position will be to serve as the head of this team (see diagram below). According to Hillen, “Mrs. Wynn and her team at the Elementary school have done a tremendous job resetting the instructional objectives, methodologies, goals, and tone of our elementary school. I formally believe the school is now well positioned to move forward quickly in a direction that best serves the needs of our students and their families. She is the perfect person to initiate many of the changes at the high school level that are specifically documented in the Strategic Plan 2013-2017. To be specific, Hillen has charged Mrs. Wynn and the HSLT to focus on the following five broad areas of school improvement: 1. Continue to make progress regarding hiring qualified, capable, and committed teachers. 2. Begin the process to expand the curricular offerings for our high school students. 3. Implement a program to attract/enroll International students. 4. Improve all technological services for students, staff members, and families. 5. Make a special effort to initiate dual enrollment opportunities for our students. The other members of the High School Leadership Team (HSLT) are Bob Gardner, Harry Robertson, and Ryan Gibadlo. Mr. Gardner will serve a key role as the liaison contact between middle school and high school. Mr. Robertson, of course, will serve as the academic/college counselor for all high school students. Mr. Gibadlo will expand his Dean of Students responsibilities and take a more active role in the administration of school policies and procedures. This team is certainly uniquely qualified to operate a highly effective high school program. Ethel Wynn Associate Headmaster HIGH SCHOOL LEADERSHIP TEAM In the fall of 2014, a widespread search will be conducted to hire a new High School Principal. More information regarding that search will be available as the process unfolds. In terms of administration of our elementary school, please see page 4 of this publication for specific details. That information should be both informative and encouraging as HCA continues to expand and improve the total HCA educational ministry. Bob Gardner Harry Robertson Ryan Gibadlo MS Principal Counselor Dean of Students Please extend a word of support and encouragement to all of the individuals effected by the administrative changes. They will certainly appreciate your support and encouragement as they commence with their new and/or expanded duties. For the second year in a row, Georgia High School Association (GHSA) and Georgia Electric Membership Corporation (GEMC) jointly selected HCA to receive the 2014 GHSA Cooperative Spirit Sportsmanship Award for Region 8-A. Taylor Davis, HCA Athletic Director, said, “This is the second year in a row that we have won this award, which is a testimony to what our athletics is all about. This past year our athletics, as a whole, had more success then we have ever had in the history of Hebron. However, this award is what I am most proud of, being able to represent good sporting behavior. Let’s continue to represent Christ on and off the field as we conclude this athletic year.” The Cooperative Spirit Sportsmanship Awards program was introduced in 2006 to honor GHSA member schools that exhibit outstanding sportsmanship. 3 New Elementary School Principal Cayce Waters The re-assignment of Ethel Wynn, of course, created a Principalship vacancy at the Elementary School. To fill this vacancy, Headmaster Hillen announced that Cayce Waters has been promoted to fill this important administrative position. According to Hillen, “The decision to promote Cayce was perhaps the easiest administrative decision I have made during my time at HCA. Since Cayce was already being groomed to fill this position, this promotion simply accelerated her career path and filled a major administrative need at HCA.” The announcement of Cayce Waters as HCA’s new Elementary School Principal has been met with widespread enthusiasm and support. This came as no surprise to Hillen who responded by saying, “I could look far and wide across this country and could not find a more capable, committed, and devoted person than Cayce to assume this principal role.” Cayce will continue to utilize the services of Linda Dussling, as the Literacy and Curriculum Coordinator. Cayce, Linda, and a team of excellent educators will form a formidable employee group to move our elementary school forward. Without question, the 2014-2015 school year promises to be a great year at HCA! Facility Master Plan Update Jesus commands us to plan and prepare. In Luke 14:28, Jesus says, “For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost.” The HCA Board of Directors has contracted CDH Partners, school architects in Marietta, to develop a Facility Master Plan for HCA. The plan will encompass the entire campus with a focus on a new Elementary facility. Through generous giving from Hebron Church, the campus land has grown from 15 acres to 54 acres over the past 5 years. Tim Hillen and Kevin Shaffer have initiated and begun securing pledges for the Headmaster’s Circle, a fund dedicated to building a new Elementary facility. In less than 6 months, God has led generous givers to pledge almost $1 million over the next three years. The HCA faculty and staff are 100% invested in the Headmaster’s Circle. The Facility Master Plan committee will be soliciting input from all of HCA’s stakeholders in the coming month. Everyone should receive an invitation to complete an on-line survey. Some families may receive multiple invitations for the various HCA programs that they are involved in. Your input is very important in developing the most comprehensive plan for HCA. HCA Re-Accreditation a Success The Re-Accreditation process for HCA was conducted by the AdvancED Accreditation External Review Team on March 24-27, 2014. To say that the process and the results were outstanding would be a gross understatement. To the contrary, Bill Wilson, Chairman of the External Review Team, commented that the findings of the team and the process on which the findings were based were apparent and as impressive as any school evaluated utilizing the AdvancED process. The ACSI Regional Accreditation Commission met on May 6, 2014, and reviewed the External Team Re-Accreditation Report for Hebron Christian Academy. We are pleased to report that the Commission voted to grant Hebron Christian Academy ACSI accreditation for the full five-year term! The HCA administration wishes to thank all constituencies that made this re-accreditation effort a resounding success. Thanks for a job well done!
