Prince Georges Council 2809 Meetings: 8:00pm 9450 Cherry Hill Rd, College Park, MD 20740 2nd & 4th Mondays of each month The Knight Volume LXV Issue 5 Chaplain’s Message September/October 2016 Grand Knight’s Message PLAN AHEAD. PRAY FOR OTHERS. How exasperating, frustrating or even at times frightening to be on the outside knocking on a door only to be told, “go away.” Jesus often speaks of a narrow door or gate and assures us that people “will come from the east and the west and from the north and the south and will recline at the table in the Kingdom of God. For behold, some are last who will be first, and Msgr Joaquin Bazan some are first who will be last.” (Luke 13:29Chaplain 30.) All are called to holiness. But even those who claim to be disciplines of Jesus and cry “Lord, Lord” are concerned when it is difficult to enter the narrow way. From a different perspective St. Catherine of Siena knows that one can often feel sorrow for those who offend God or follow different paths, especially when they are knocking. In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus gives the hope that he will answer for all, some before others, each in a particular order. The path is wide but the entrance is very narrow. Many are on the path and multitudes follow the “Great Shepherd.” The Apostle John envisions the multitudes in the Book of Revelation. Science tells us it takes energy and effort to struggle through a narrow opening but opposition in our struggle to pass through our narrow opening is inhibited by our sinful nature and Satan who battles against us to make this trek difficult. No amount of our own effort will be successful. It is through the gift of faith and the grace of salvation by God we enter through the door. “Again I say to you it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God” (Luke 18:25). With our gifts of faith and salvation, when established firmly in God, we no longer fear the world can separate us from Him and our life beyond the door. Our God is one of contrasts: darkness vs. light, evil vs. goodness, joy vs. sadness, peace vs. war, etc. God teaches us by experiencing these events. Through the door or gate is a surprise. The prominent of the world may find themselves humbled for a while beyond the door. Those whom people have ignored and not acknowledged may find themselves princes. The rich may experience a time of poverty. The barren woman will have seven sons. Think of the poor beggar outside the rich man’s door who died and was carried by angels to heaven whereas the rich man died and experienced the nether world. (There’s that door again!) Think of the Beatitudes. We plow ahead and keep knocking until it is our turn to enter, however or whenever that may happen. Once we realize a locked door exits and there is someone to answer, we can pray for others and help them in their journey along the wide path remembering each are called in different order and ultimately experience the prize behind the door. We are able to experience the pain and concern of others and help them as they knock. Plan ahead. Pray for others. July Knight of the month: SK Joe Cole Family of the month: SK Tom & Carolyn Lank August Knight of the month: SK Steve O’Shaughnessy Family of the month: SK Tom & Denise Young Prince Georges Council 2809 Cap 1 Brothers All, Summer is almost gone and soon we will be preparing ourselves for all the indoor activities. The Aqua Knights wrapped up another sun-funfilled season! They did exceptionally well under the coaching of Allie Gehring and Grace Kelly! The Divisionals were held at our pool, which received compliment after compliment, such as what a gorgeous place we have, how genuinely nice we are and how beautiful pool house is! Such amazing praises, it makes SK Louis Velis you proud to be a part of K of C 2809! The team Grand Knight came in a close 3rd, not bad at all! The swim team banquet was held on July 29th where the team feasted on Mama Lucia's! The MVP, Most Improved Swimmer and Coach's awards were presented, along with the extremely special Leo J Myzick Award, which went to Sheila McGee, well deserved! Congratulations to all our swimmers! We say good-bye to a few, as they are aging out. Thank you to Drew Humphrey, Justin Eppard, Laura Konar, Ann Gilmore, Elizabeth Gilmore, Reilly Taylor and Chase Lintner. We will be celebrating Labor Day in the grove where we will have our traditional festivities, camp out, Mass, and a Family Softball game. Our council will host the 3rd Annual Point One K Charity Run for the special Olympics of Maryland on September 17th., Last year we raised nearly $4,500.00 in a race that is about a football field long, downhill, in the shade, with beverage stops and a victory party! Every runner will get a shirt and a bib as if they ran a typical length race so that they could brag about it to their friends. The shirts, decals, food and beverages are all donated by sponsors. 100% of your contributions go directly to Special Olympics of Maryland so they are tax deductible. ALL are welcome, so please sign up a team and challenge your friends to come out and have a great time supporting a great cause. Please sign up at www.pointonek.com or in the clubhouse, please be sure to turn in your K of C State Council Car Raffle tickets to Frank Lattanzi, no later than Monday, October 3rd. The council keeps $.60 of each $1.00 collected! The Columbus Day Ball will be on October 8. Our dart and shuffleboard leagues will be active this fall as well. I don't have words to express my gratitude to all of you for the unconditional support and love towards my family and myself. From the first day that I became a Knight I felt welcome to an environment that it was new to me but as time passed I felt deep in my heart that I was at the right place with the right people, because we shared the same values and ideas taking into consideration one goal.... CHARITY....A great virtue that GOD has given us. There's nothing more rewarding than to help people that need it the most. Let’s face it, we’ve all had at one point difficulties in our lives, but there are people out there with major disabilities, people dying of hunger, people without shelter, people that don't have families, people that have lost everything in senseless wars or natural disasters. We the KNIGHTS can make a difference by working as a TEAM and involving our friends and family. Working with what we have to put a smile on a sad face, a piece of bread on the table of a family that cannot afford to have at least one decent meal a day, to clothe the less fortunate.... YES, WE CAN ..Yes we can, because GOD is going to give us wisdom and strength. All we have to do is ask for it, and we will be able to achieve the unthinkable. Please keep me in your players so I can be the Grand Knight you all deserve! Vivat Jesus! Louis Velis Sep/Oct 2016 Financial Secretary’s Message Culture of Life Corner Council 2809 congratulates its newest members In our current secular culture ... we see attacks on faith, family and the unborn every day. While this can be viewed as a form of persecution ... it's also an opportunity to witness to God's joy and love. Through 40 Days for Life, we have seen God overcome the cultural climate to shed light on one critically important area – Christian unity! As we gear up for our biggest 40 Days for Life campaign yet (it starts September 28), we want to highlight Christian unity ... and how Catholics, Evangelicals and Protestants are working – and praying – together to end abortion. I'm Catholic; my friend Dave Sterrett is Evangelical. In the latest 40 Days for Life podcast episode, we discuss the importance of Christian unity in today's culture – in terms of both the challenges we face and the things you can do toget more Christians from your own church involved in the pro-life movement. Listen to the podcast here: https://40daysforlife.com/2016/08/09/podcast-32/ Dave, the author of nine books, has served on the 40 Days for Life board of directors. This mission is very close to his heart – as is the notion that praying for an end to abortion is something that all Christians can do together. You can hear Dave's unique perspectives in this podcast episode: https://40daysforlife.com/2016/08/09/podcast-32/ Check it out ... be inspired ... and get ready to pray with all of your Christian brothers and sisters during the next 40 Days for Life campaign! Find the peaceful vigil nearest you at: https://40daysforlife.com/browse-campaigns/ For life, SHAWN CARNEY, President, 40 Days for Life www.40daysforlife.com Join us 10am Sat SEP 17, in St. Mary of Mills Church, Laurel, for our KICKOFF RALLY, with our amazing speaker, Dr. Grace Morrison. Everyone in Maryland should attend this Rally, including our elected leaders, to make this a call to action, to revoke LeRoy Carhart's medical license. In addition to our speaker, we have a musical interlude with St. Mary's singers, and an update from Tom Trunk, on Fall prayer events. Yard signs will be on sale, and literature and electronic Calendar sign-ups available too!!! Need we say more? Sep/Oct 2016 District Deputy’s Message Fraternal Benefit Greetings District 10 Worthy Officers, Brothers and Lovely Ladies, As the summer has wound down and we turn our thoughts to the falling leaves and the beautiful colors of the fall foliage and cooler temperatures, let’s not forget that the 1stQuarter will soon be complete and we should be thinking about getting those Quarterly reports written up and ready to be submitted to me by September 10 for review. They are due to the State Program Director no later than September 15. I know that all of the Councils in the District will turn in great reports. Have your Activity Keith Hurst Directors help the GK’s out with these reports, District Deputy Especially if the event being reported was run by that Director. It makes it much easier for your GK. Along with the cooler temperatures comes one of the programs I would like to see become a staple in our District. It’s the Coats for Kids Program. I think this is a very worthy program and its rewards are instant. When you give a child a nice warm winter coat who only moments before did not have one, the smile and hugs and thanks you receive from that grateful child and family will warm your heart, and that is a great feeling. It is also what we do because charity is what we are all about. It is our first and most sacred principal we stand for. So let’s get out there and make this program the best in state this year. You can get details about it at www.kofc.org/coats for more details. We also have quite a few other events coming up for the Councils and the District. September is also the month we hold fundraisers for the Maryland Special Olympics. Prince Georges Council #2809 will be holding its 3rd Annual .1K Special Olympics Fundraiser on Saturday Sept 17 from 12 till ?? with refreshments and food at the grove afterwards at their Council home in College Park. This is great event to support. The Soccer Challenge is also one of those events. Each Council should hold a Council level event and the winners of that event can attend the District level event and if they win their they move on to the State Level championship. Please keep an eye out in the near future for information for the District level event date and time. The Charitable Service Outreach Week will be from October 19. This also coincides with the Council Church Drives in October. Your Councils should be participating in these events. I look forward to seeing all of you at these events throughout the next two months. We have some Degrees also coming up in the District. There is an Admissions and Formation Degree ( formerly 1st/2nd degrees) at PG Council 2809 on September 12 at 7:30- report time for candidates is 6:45pm. Prince Georges Council #2809 has a Knighthood Degree ( 3rd) on September 24th at 1:30pm. Report time for candidates is 1:00pm. Patuxent Council #2203 has Admissions/Formation Degree on October 18, at 7:30pm Report time for candidates is 7:00pm. Prince Georges Council #2809 has a Formation Degree on October 24, at 8:00pm, report time for Candidates is 7:30pm. As we get ready for the upcoming holidays, I know. Time flies doesn’t it. Let us remember the less fortunate in our society and pray for them and lend a helping hand to pick them up and make them feel worthwhile and a part of our society again. I was once told that you should treat the homeless person asking you for some spare change or some food or work like they might be an angel from God testing our charitable intentions. You never know, that could be one of us one day and I know I would want some compassion and charity if I were in that predicament. I know in my heart that my Brother Knights and their Lovely Ladies would help that person out in their time of need and despair. Let the Knights of Columbus be that organization that leads the way in showing the world what we are. An Organization that would help anyone in need no matter what the color of their skin, their religious beliefs, their race, or their so called place in society is. God made all of us in his image, so we should treat everyone like they are an angel and not like they are beneath us or different from us. Lets show the world that as Knights of Columbus we will lift up our fellow man and woman and show them that with our deeds and acts of kindness. Let our charitable works and compassion be our words. The old adage “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” seems like a good motto to live by as well as close this newsletter with. Until next time, Pax Christi, Keith Hurst, PGK, #2809, DD#10 H-301-262-6787/C-301-674-7290 Prince Georges Council 2809 3 Our Guarantees Set Us Apart Bob Monagan , PGK-FICF-LUTCF Knights of Columbus life insurance offers something precious few other financial products can – guarantees. As long as you pay your premiums, the policy proceeds will be there for your beneficiaries should something happen to you. That’s peace of mind, and that’s what we offer with our every product in our portfolio. We guarantee the cash value in your whole life policies will be there. We guarantee the rates on your term insurance. We guarantee our retirement products will provide a stream of income when you need it. On top of those product guarantees, I guarantee that I will offer professional, high-quality service that you would expect from our organization. Our Order is among the highest rated life insurers in North America. AM Best has rated the Knights of Columbus “A++, Superior” for 38 consecutive years. It’s a testament to our track record for excellence and security. I would suggest that a principal reason that we were able to achieve those accolades is because we remain steadfastly committed to the vision of Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney by providing life insurance by brother Knights for brother Knights. That commitment is an essential core value of the Knights of Columbus, and our core values permeate all levels of our organization. One nine eight six seven nine one. We pledge to serve our brother Knights, and their families, according to our Golden Rule: “In all my professional relationships, I pledge myself to the following rule of conduct: I shall, in light of all conditions surrounding those I serve, render that service which, under the same circumstances, I would apply to myself.” Let’s talk soon to discuss how our products can bring that peace of mind to you and your family. He spoke about the responsibilities of Catholic laymen and how the new Building the Domestic Church initiative will help men fulfill their roles at home, in their parishes, in their councils and in their communities. The initiative is designed to foster a new alliance among parishes, families and councils, for the benefit of each, he noted. It also is an ideal program for attracting young Catholic men by providing them with the resources to build and sustain the Catholic faith in their families. "This is the greatest Catholic men's organization in the world," the supreme knight said, to applause, "so we need to bring more men into it. They need our help. Their families need our help. Their neighborhoods need our help. Their countries need our help." Saying that the Knights of Columbus must grow by "attraction," he added, "We have to be the Catholic men that other Catholic men want to be associated with." State Council Information In July, because of your donations, the Ultrasound Project donated two ultrasound machines to pregnancy centers in Baltimore and in Easton. These machines were number 17 and 18. Your donations are matched by the Supreme Council, making your efforts even greater. Again we need your help to make additional donations. Can you spare a few dollars for the littlest of God's children? Do you know a pregnancy center that could use an ultrasound machine to help its clients see the gift of God growing within them?
