Troubleshooting Installation Issues
Once the Handbook has opened to its initial screen, as illustrated in Fig.
14, the next step is to test the installation and verify that all of the Handbook files can be opened.
Testing the Installation.—Verify that an internet connection is available. Then click on a title of one of the major sections, MATHEMATICS
for example, from either the bookmark menu (Fig. 14, left) or the splash
screen (Fig. 14, right). For most users, the Handbook will open to the first
Table of Contents page of the section selected, indicating that installation
has been successful. Users with a permanent internet connection are finished and can begin to explore and use the Handbook. Any additional
permissions required for the remaining files will gradually be acquired as
the Handbook is explored and the various files are opened.
Offline Authorization.—Users of laptops and computers that do not
have a permanent internet connection should install offline permissions.
Open the file Handbook.Offline.pdf that is located in the MH29 directory
of the location where the Handbook was installed. This location is typically Program Files/Machinery’s Handbook/29th Edition/MH29/. On 64Copyright 2012, Industrial Press Inc., New York, NY

XI
bit computers, the location is typically Program Files (x86)/Machinery’s
Handbook/29th Edition/MH29/. The file Handbook.Offline.pdf is also
available on the CD in the MH29 directory. After the file has been
opened once, you should be able to open any of the Handbook files even
when you are no longer connected to the internet. It should not be necessary to open Handbook.Offline.pdf again.
Error Messages.—Each computer that tries to open an encrypted Handbook file requires authorization by means of a permission server. The
FileOpen plugin, installed during the setup process, manages the process
of requesting and delivering the required permissions by means of the
internet. The following material discusses what to do if the Handbook
files fail to open.
When Nothing Happens, or Adobe Reader/Acrobat Crashes: I f c l i c k ing on the title of one of the Handbook sections fails to open that file, or
is Reader or Acrobat suddenly crashes, the most likely cause is a missing
FileOpen plugin. Check for the plugin as follows:
In Reader or Acrobat, on the title bar find and click on Help -> About
Third-Party Plug-Ins and look for FileOpen WebPublisher or FileOpen
Client. If neither of these items appears, or if About Third-Party Plug-Ins
is not listed, then the required plugin is not installed.
To install the plugin, first CLOSE Adobe Reader and Acrobat, and then
locate and click on the Windows Start menu -> Machinery’s Handbook > 29th Edition -> Install FileOpen Plugin. Then, recheck the plugin
installation as above and retest opening the Handbook. If both Reader and
Acrobat are installed, retest both programs.
Plugin Installs in Reader but not in Acrobat (Advanced Topic): Rarely,
the plugin installs correctly in Reader but not in Acrobat, or vice versa. In
that event, the easiest solution is to manually copy the plugin file from the
location where it installed correctly (Reader plug_ins directory) to the
location where it failed to install (Acrobat plug_ins directory).
The name of the plugin file is FileOpen.api. The plugin is ordinarily
installed in both Acrobat and Reader plug_ins directories (if both Acrobat
and Reader are installed):
c:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 9.0\Acrobat\plug_ins
c:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\plug_ins
Versions 6, 7, 8, and 10 of Acrobat and Reader use similar paths. You
can also search for FileOpen.api on your computer. If plugin installation
was previously attempted, the plugin should be there somewhere, probably in the remaining stub of a previous Reader or Acrobat installation.

INSTALLING MACHINERY’S HANDBOOK
If you find it, you can then copy and paste it into the correct location,
per above, according to your versions of Reader and Acrobat.
Error Contacting the Server: The error message shown in Fig. 15
occurs when the FileOpen plugin attempts to contact the permission
server and cannot do so for one of the following reasons:
Fig. 15. Error contacting the server message
a) Internet connection is not present. Connect to the internet and retry.
b) Internet connection is present, but the FileOpen plugin is unable to
make requests to the permission server because the connection is blocked
by some software on the local computer. Usually, the cause is a version of
internet security software that is actively blocking the plugin’s request to
the permission server. Often the end user is unaware that software is
blocking the connection.
To correct this problem, it is necessary to identify the program that is
blocking the connection and request that it allow the connection.
To assist in trouble shooting this condition, the request will be originating with the plugin via Adobe Acrobat or Reader and directed to the permission server at http://www.industrialpress.com.
Authorization Failure: The error message displayed in Fig. 16 indicates
that the permission server has rejected a request to open one of the Handbook files. The error indicates that the computer making the request is
unknown to the permission server, or that the permission server requires
additional information in order to complete the request.

Resolve the error illustrated in Fig. 16, clicking on “Accept” to open the
document server web page, Fig. 17. Enter your registration number in
that page and click “Login”. When the page changes and reports “Login
Successful” return to the Handbook and try to open the same or another
section. It should now work.

MACHINERY’S HANDBOOK 29 ON THE MAC
Installing Machinery’s Handbook 29 on the Mac
Although Machinery’s Handbook 29 CD is not officially supported on
Macintosh computers, a number of customers have expressed interest in
trying to install the Handbook on their Mac computers. This set of
instructions should help get Machinery's Handbook 29 working on a
Mac, but no guarantees.
Installation.—1) The first requirement for the running the Handbook on
any OS is to install the FileOpen security plugin. A Mac version of the
plugin is available on the CD in the Data\FileOpen\Macintosh directory.
If necessary, you can try http://plugin.fileopen.com/all.html and scroll
down to the Mac section. You may find a more recent version of the plugin than what is currently available on the CD.
If the plugin installer indicates “your Acrobat preferences are set to
restrict the loading of non-Adobe plugins...” and requests permission to
change this setting, answer “Yes” or “Ok” to allow this change to your
preferences.
Once you have run the plugin installer, you can check that the plugin is
installed properly by navigating to the Acrobat/Reader menu, and selecting “About Third-Party Plug-ins”. You should see “FileOpen WebPublisher” listed. This indicates that the plugin is loaded.
If you have difficulty installing the plugin, consult the readme.rtf file
that is packaged with the plugin installer from the FileOpen web site.
Copy Files.—2) Copy the MH29 and G29 directories from the CD to
some convenient location on your hard drive. Create a directory Data in
the same location as the MH29 and G29 directories. Copy the file
index29.pdx and the directory Index29 from the Data directory of the CD
to the Data directory you created on your hard drive.
Authorization.—3a) Make sure you are connected to the internet and
using Adobe Acrobat or Reader (not the built in Apple PDF viewer),
open the file Handbook.pdf from the MH29 directory on your hard drive.
Click on the name of one of the Handbook sections, such as Mathematics,
from the left (bookmark) panel.
3b) If the file opens and you can see the Table of Contents page of the
section, then go on to step 4); otherwise continue with step 3c).
3c) If a message pops up that says “You are not authorized to open this
file...”, click on the “Accept” button. The document server login web
page should open (if you don't see the login page, it may be hidden
behind another window on your screen). Enter your CD registration numCopyright 2012, Industrial Press Inc., New York, NY

ber in the field provided on the login page, exactly as it is written on the
label, including all the dashes and capital letters. Click “Login”.
3d) Go back to the Handbook and click on another different section of
the Handbook. This time the section should open. If the document still
does not open, or if you received a different message than the one is step
3c) then you should make a copy of the message and contact me.
Offline Authorization.—4) This is the final step. Open the file Handbook.Offline.pdf that is located in the MH29 directory that was copied
from the CD to the hard drive. Once this file has been opened, all of the
Handbook files should open even if an internet connection is not available. It is not necessary to open the Handbook.Offline.pdf file again.

Add Bookmarks to Machinery’s Handbook CD
If you use Machinery’s Handbook, you probably already know that its
not always easy to find the exact page you are looking for. But, if you use
the CD an easy way to keep track of all the important and favorite pages
is to add personal bookmarks to the Handbook, as in Fig. 1. where added
bookmarks are shown in orange. You can create bookmarks that will
open the Handbook to any page, or add bookmarks that will open interactive equations, web pages, vendors’ catalogs, or other applications that
you frequently use. Detailed instructions are given in the following.
Fig. 1. New bookmarks added to the left panel of 28th edition are shown in orange.
Requirements.—Creating new bookmarks in a PDF file requires Adobe
Acrobat or another application able to add bookmarks to, and save, PDF
files. While almost any version of Acrobat can be used, newer versions
such as 7, 8 or 9 are easier to use and offer more options. Adobe Reader,
however, will not work because it is unable to edit or save PDF files.

XX
ADD BOOKMARKS TO MACHINERY’S HANDBOOK
In addition to Adobe Acrobat, other non-Adobe PDF editor products on
the market may be able to accomplish the task; there may even be some
free ones.
These instructions also require that the “Complete” option be used during Handbook installation, otherwise saving changes may not be possible.
If necessary, rerun the installation with the “Complete” option selected.
Where To Add Bookmarks.—Most of the files included with Machinery’s Handbook CD are protected and can not be changed. Some can be,
however, and by far the best of these to use is the file Handbook.pdf.
This file is located in a subdirectory of the location where the Handbook
is installed, in the Mh29 directory for the 29th edition, in Mh28 for the
28th edition, and in Mh27 for the 27th edition. Another benefit, the file
Handbook.pdf is always only just one mouse click away from every page
of the Machinery’s Handbook CD. Fig. 1 shows Handbook.pdf from the
28th edition with several additional bookmarks added.
It is also possible to create an entirely new PDF with bookmarks that
link to your favorite resources, topics, and pages of the Handbook. You
can store this PDF anywhere, even on your desktop, for easy access to
many parts of the Handbook.
29th Edition: Handbook.pdf is the first file visible when the 29th edition
Handbook opens. The file is located in the MH29 directory where the
Handbook is installed. The typical location of this file is:
C:\Program Files\Machinery’s Handbook\29th Edition\Mh29\Handbook.pdf
or, for 64-bit Windows operating systems:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Machinery’s Handbook\29th Edition\Mh29\Handbook.pdf
After you add your bookmarks to that file, you can easily return to it,
and to your bookmarks, from anyplace in the Handbook by clicking on
the words “Machinery’s Handbook 29” at the top of the bookmark
panel.
28th Edition: Handbook.pdf is located in the MH28 directory where the
Handbook is installed. The typical location of this file is:
C:\Program Files\Machinery’s Handbook\28th Edition\Mh28\Handbook.pdf
or, for 64-bit Windows operating systems:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Machinery’s Handbook\28th Edition\Mh28\Handbook.pdf
After you add your bookmarks to that file, you can easily return to it,
and to your bookmarks, from anyplace in the Handbook by clicking on
the words “Machinery’s Handbook 28th Edition” at the top of the
bookmark panel.
27th Edition: There are two files named Handbook.pdf included on the
27th edition CD. Either one can be used, but the file Handbook.pdf

XXI
located in the MH27 directory is preferable and will be more versatile
because it is the most central file in the 27th edition CD installation. You
can get back to your bookmarks from anywhere on the CD by clicking on
the bookmark “Machinery’s Handbook 27” at the top of the bookmark
panel.
Adding New Bookmarks.—Make a backup copy of the original Handbook.pdf before editing it, just in case it gets messed up. In any case, if
things go wrong a new copy of the file can be installed from the originals
on the Machinery’s Handbook CD. Here are the basic steps for adding
bookmarks:
1) Decide in advance the targets for any new bookmarks to be created.
The target is the destination page that will open when a bookmark is
clicked with a mouse. For any Handbook page, determine the name of the
file and page number to be opened. See Naming Conventions for Handbook Files, below, for instructions on determining file names.
For a bookmark that opens a web page or interactive equations, as in
Fig. 2, open the web page or equation first and record the web address.
Example:As an example, we will add a new bookmark to open the
Mathematics section to a page with formulas for right triangles, as shown
in Fig. 1. In the 29th edition, page 98 contains formulas and interactive
equations for right triangles; for the 28th edition, opening page 97 would
be a good choice; for the 27th edition, the bookmark could be set to open
page 91.
Fig. 2. Interactive equation to open from bookmark
2) Next, open Handbook.pdf in Adobe Acrobat.
3) In Acrobat, use key combination Ctrl-B (hold down the Control key
and press the B key at the same time) to create a new bookmark. A new

bookmark will appear somewhere in the bookmark panel with the words
“Untitled” highlighted, as in Fig. 3.
Fig. 3.
4) Select the new bookmark, click on its text and change it to something
meaningful that describes the target. For this example, to create a bookmark that opens a page of right triangle formulas, rename the new bookmark Right Triangle Formulas.
5) Use the mouse to select and drag the bookmark to a logical location
on the bookmark list. Drop it in the new location by releasing the mouse
key. For the previous example, drag the bookmark and drop it indented
under the existing Mathematics bookmark.
It takes some practice to drag and drop bookmarks exactly where they
are intended to go, but it gets easier after a while.
Bookmark Properties.—Bookmark properties specify the general
appearance of bookmarks and also identify a list of actions that will occur
when a bookmark is activated. So far, the bookmark created in the previous steps has only default properties which need to be modified for the
bookmark to become useful.
6) Right-click on the new bookmark and select Properties from the
menu that appears. A Bookmark Properties dialog, Fig. 4, appears with
two tabs, Appearance and Actions. On the Appearance tab, select the
color and text style for the bookmark text.
Fig. 4. Bookmark properties for text style and text color

ADD BOOKMARKS TO MACHINERY’S HANDBOOK XXIII
7) The Actions tab (see Figs. 5, 6, and 7) allows specifying one or
more document actions that will occur when the mouse cursor clicks on a
bookmark. For the current example, the new bookmark will be set up to
open the Handbook to a specific page.
Various versions of Adobe Acrobat have different sets of available
actions. Newer versions have more options available than older ones, so
depending on your version you may need to experiment a bit to discover
which actions fit your requirements best.
Click on the Actions tab to open the Actions dialog. In the bottom portion of the panel are listed existing actions that will be performed, in
order, when the bookmark is pressed. Zero or more actions may be listed,
but normally the panel will contain only a single default action such as
Go to a page in this document. For this example, the default action is not
required and can be deleted.
Next, click on the Select Action: drop-down list in the Add an Action
portion of the dialog, Fig. 5. From the drop-down list, select Go to a page
in another document and then click on the Add button.
Fig. 5. Bookmark “Action” options
8) After pressing Add, another dialog, Fig. 6, appears that allows you to
select a target file, how you want the file to open (in the current window
or a new window, for example), the page number to open in the target
document, and the default zoom to use for opening the document. For this
example, in the dialog that appears select Browse to locate and select the
Mathematics file according to Naming Conventions for Handbook Files,

Naming Conventions for Handbook Files.—Each major section of the
Handbook has a filename that starts with a single letter corresponding to
the edition (B for the 29th edition, A for 28th edition, Z for 27th, and Y for
26th), followed by a single letter corresponding to the section (a for
Mathematics, b for Mechanics, etc.), and concluding with the .pdf extension. The following list identifies the second character in the document
filename according to section topic.
a =MATHEMATICS
b =MECHANICS AND STRENGTH OF MATERIALS
d =PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS
f =INSPECTION, GAGING AND MEASURING
g =TOOLING
h =MACHINING
i =MANUFACTURING
j =FASTENERS
k =THREADS AND THREADING
l =GEARING
m =MACHINE ELEMENTS
n =MEASURING UNITS
x =ADDITIONAL CD CONTENTS
Index files are named as follows:
H29CDIX = PRIMARY INDEX
H29StdIX = INDEX OF STANDARDS
H29LmIX = INDEX OF INTERACTIVE EQUATIONS
H29MatIX = INDEX OF MATERIALS
BxIX = INDEX OF ADDITIONAL CD CONTENTS
Example:The 29th edition major section filenames start with the letter
B, followed by a second character that corresponds to the section topic as
identified in the list above. Thus, the Mathematics section filename is
Ba.pdf, Mechanics is Bb.pdf, etc.

How To Use Interactive Math
Interactive Math Solutions.—The CD-ROM editions of Machinery’s
Handbook and Machinery’s Handbook Guide contains interactive math
equations that provide solutions to many typical shop and engineering
problems. These interactive equations can be modified by the user to try
new values and act as a problem specific calculator. Clicking on the
“light bulb” icon (Figs. 1a and Figs. 1b) in the margin next to an equation
or problem will automatically launch your computer’s default web
browser. The browser connects to the Internet to locate the math problem
and displays the appropriate interactive math problem in “LiveMath” format.
Fig. 1a. Interactive Math Icon
Locating Math Solutions: In the Handbook, a complete list of interactive solutions is given in the Index of Interactive Equations, located under
Indexes on the bookmark panel. In the Guide, a list of interactive solutions is given in the List of Interactive Equations starting on page 279. In
either list, click on the page number corresponding to a problem of interest to navigate to the Handbook or Guide page containing the icon linking
to the solution.

selected problem. Some users may have to right mouse click on the icon
to open a menu and select “Open Weblink in Browser.” Note: You must
be able to access the Internet from your computer to be able to use the
interactive online LiveMath equations.
Installing the LiveMath Plug-in: The first time you launch a LiveMath
problem your web browser will prompt you to install an “ActiveX control” or install an “LM ActiveX Plug-in.” After you install the LiveMath
plug-in, close the browser and relaunch the math problem from Machinery’s Handbook. From this time forward the math problems will display
automatically.
Occasionally the plug-in may fail to install automatically. If that happens go to the LiveMath web site, www.livemath.com, and download and
install the free LiveMath plug-in suitable for your particular browser.
You should experience no further problems. For questions about compatibility with a specific web browser, consult the livemath.com web site.
LiveMath Components.—Each interactive math solution window contains a banner, a title, a description of the problem, a list of assigned variable values, and the solution to the problem displayed numerically and
sometimes graphically. Where a problem has multiple parts, each subproblem is surrounded by its own bounding box outline. A example LiveMath problem is shown in Fig. 2.

LOCATING INFORMATION IN THE HANDBOOK
Locating Information in the Handbook
There are a number of methods of locating specific information in
Machinery’s Handbook 29. These techniques include using the various
Table of Contents and Index pages of the Handbook, using Reader/Acrobat “Find” and “Search” tools to locate a word or phrase, navigating to
specific page numbers using keyboard shortcuts, and using the Quick
Page Finder.
Table of Contents, Main.—The main Table of Contents (or TOC) of the
Handbook, pictured in Fig. 1, are pages vii and viii of the book, in the
Front Matter section.
Fig. 1. Bookmark menu (left), main Table of Contents – TOC (right)
On the CD, the primary section titles are highlighted, and the major
subdivisions of each section are listed below it.
A click on a primary section title displays a detailed TOC of the selected
section, as in Fig. 2. The primary section titles are also listed on the
Bookmark menu, at the left in Fig. 1.
Example 1(a):Each Handbook section starts with a detailed TOC. Click
on MEASURING UNITS in the main TOC, page viii.
The view changes to the section TOC shown in Fig. 2.
Example 1(b):The Bookmark menu also includes a detailed TOC. Click
on MEASURING UNITS in the Bookmark menu.
The result is the same view, Fig. 2, as in the previous example. Notice
that the bookmark menu has expanded, displaying the same subdivisions
of the selected section that can be seen in the main TOC, Fig. 1.

the Measuring Units section
Table of Contents, Section.—As previously mentioned, every section of
the Handbook starts with a detailed TOC that can be displayed by clicking on its section title in the main TOC or Bookmark menu. Every section
TOC, such as that on the right in Fig. 2, lists the most important topics
included in that section. A click on any of the topics listed on the section
TOC opens the Handbook to the page specified adjacent to that topic.
Bookmark Menu.—The Bookmark menu mirrors the content of the section TOCs, usually in more detail. A click on the “+” or “–” sign next to a
bookmark entry expands or collapses the bookmark entry at that location.
Clicking on any bookmark opens a view of the Handbook at the location
or page number associated with that bookmark.
Indexes.—There are five indexes included in the Handbook CD. However, only the Primary Index is available in the printed Handbook. The
other indexes are exclusive to the CD and are named:
Index of Standards
Index of Interactive Equations
Index of Materials
Index of Additional Content on the CD

XXXII LOCATING INFORMATION IN THE HANDBOOK
Clicking on INDEXES in the Bookmark panel opens the Primary Index
and expands the Bookmark panel to display bookmarks for the other
indexes, see Fig. 3.
Fig. 3. Index bookmarks (left) and the Primary Index (right)
Index entries in the various indexes are linked to the location in the text
page where the index entry occurs. To navigate to a page referenced in
the index, click directly on the page number listed. The view will change
to the page in the text where the index entry occurs.
Quick Page Finder.—The Quick Page Finder is a special page that contains links to all of the odd numbered pages in the Handbook, and makes
it possible to easily navigate to any page number without knowing in
which file the page occurs. Instructions for use are included on the Quick
Page Finder page below the table.
Also on the Quick Page Finder page is a text field that can be used to
enter page numbers directly. Simply enter a valid page number, and click
on the small image of the Handbook. The view will change to the page
number requested. This method requires a JavaScript enabled version of
Reader or Acrobat; fortunately, most are.

LOCATING INFORMATION IN THE HANDBOOK XXXIII
Using “Find” and “Search”.—Adobe Reader and Acrobat have two
methods of locating specific words and phrases: Find and Search. These
two method differ significantly in the results they return, and must be
used correctly in order to be effective.
Machinery’s Handbook is a collection of a number of individual PDF
files that are integrated together using various techniques. Because of
this, it is important to select the right method for locating information in
the text.
Using “Find”: Find is a tool consisting of a text search field along with
a Next and Previous occurrence button, shown approximately in the center of the toolbar in Fig. 4. Find is used to locate the occurrences a word
or phrase in the current document, in a sequential manner, starting at the
currently displayed page. It is most useful to locate specific text close to
the current location in the document.
Fig. 4. The “Find” text field with Previous and Next buttons
Using “Search”: Search is a tool consisting of a search panel containing a search field, a results display area, and various selectable options.
The Search icon is Binoculars, as shown on the toolbar in Fig. 5, and the
Search panel is shown in Fig. 6. Search is used to locate a word or phrase
in one or more documents, optionally using a precompiled index to
improve and speed up the search. The search result includes the names of
documents where the search term was found and shows the document
context in which the search term occurs.
