BMW vs Mini Cooper Road Rally
September 19, 2009
A total of 23 teams, 9 BMWs & 14 Mini Coopers, participated in this annual contest for the
King of the Road title. The day started off a bit chilly and windy but eventually the clouds
gave way and the sun shined down on the teams as they motored along the 80 mile road
course.
This years course included 3 historic churches, 2 historic bridges and miles of beautiful rural
roads to challenge the teams. As hard as they tried, the BMW camp just couldn’t pull off a
win this year as the Mini Cooper tribe took 1st
Place once again. Part of the problem may be that
the Minis always outnumber the BMWs and
therefore have the odds in their favor of winning.
Who knows? Next year we may have to switch
things up a bit to help the BMWs have a fighting
chance.
Congratulations to Sam & Tira Rogers and Jim
& Esther Hopgood who took 1st Place in the
event with Tira’s new 2009 Mini Cooper! Nice work
you guys! Special thanks goes out to our Support
Teams for the event, Jenna Bellinski & Nichole
Rhenisch. We would also like to thank Rich
Winterman and Jenna Bellinski of the BMW Store for doing a really nice job of organizing the
event and supplying prizes for the winning teams. For pictures from the event, click here.

Feed the Wolves Road Tour & Fundraiser
October 3, 2009
One of the neatest Rallies of our season is the Feed the Wolves Road Tour & Fundraiser
to help raise money to feed the Wolf packs under the care of Terry & Kathy Baudendistel. The
road tour is always a lot of fun with interesting places to see but the best part of the day is
visiting with the Wolves at Wolf Creek. What a great experience it is to walk into their
enclosure and have a small Wolf pack come up to greet you into their domain!
I think that most of us were raised with the notion that Wolves were dangerous, nasty
animals when it fact they are highly intelligent, extremely loyal to their pack and one of the
most beautiful animals on the planet. Unfortunately, most humans don’t understand the Wolf
and would rather exterminate these great mammals rather than coexist with them.
This is where Terry & Kathy come into play. These two dedicated people have devoted their
lives to saving Wolves and educating people on the plight of the remaining Wolf packs here in
the U.S. One way of bringing people up to
speed on the true nature of the Wolf is to
allow people to enter their enclosures at Wolf
Creek Habitat. I’ve done many things in my life
but sitting with a pack of Wolves at Wolf Creek
ranks among the top five! It’s difficult to put
into words but to be in the presence of these
majestic animals and see their true interest in
you as a visitor to their home is a very
humbling experience.
We raised over $950.00 for the Wolves and
plan to do this event again in 2010 on October
00. Hope everyone can make it! For pictures

The Rising Sun Navy Bean Festival Road Rally
October 10, 2009
Very few places in the State of Indiana can match Ohio County, Indiana for great country
roads with beautiful views and little or no traffic. This is the smallest county in the State but
it’s packed with some of the most interesting places you’ll ever find. For instance, did you
know that in addition to having two historic bridges in the County, (One which is one of the
rarest in the Country.) two historic mansions can also be found here one of which Abraham
Lincoln visited many years ago!
This years Navy Bean Festival Road Rally featured the best weather possible for an event
like this. Clear blue skies with temperatures in the upper 60’s greeted the teams as they made
their way along the rural county roads. One of the highlights during the course included the
chance to drive across the freshly restored
Lost Bridge which was built in 1916. This
beautiful old bridge spans Laughery Creek
and is so far back in the middle of nowhere
that most people in the County are unaware
of its location.

The Tour for the Cure Fundraiser
Road Rally
October 17, 2009
Debbie Smith the Dearborn County Convention, Visitor & Tourism Bureau Director is an
ardent supporter of the Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer and came up with the
unique idea of using a Road Rally to raise funds for the program. Working with the foundation
and several other key supporters of the program, Debbie assembled a very serious media blitz
that attracted teams from up to 200 miles away for the fundraiser!
On the morning of the Rally we had a very sizeable
Greendale Cinemas parking lot. As a matter of fact we had
attend the event! Debbie is expecting an even larger crowd
decided to move the start/finish location to the Perfect North
of Lawrenceburg.
contention of participants in the
37 vehicles and over 100 people
for the 2010 fundraiser and has
Slopes facility located just outside
We had a great day for the fundraiser Rally with plenty of sunshine and some great stops
along the way which included: The tours of the historic Hillforest & Verastau Estates; a stop to
see Peggy the Flying Horse; visits to three old iron bridges built in 1878, 1887 & 1920; a stop
at the Guilford Covered Bridge built in 1879;
stops at Beiersdorfer’s Orchard, Busse’s fruit &
vegetable market, McCabes Greenhouse &
Floral and a stop at The Framery in
Lawrenceburg.
Special thanks to Debbie Smith & Sally
McWilliams for putting this event together and a
big thanks goes out to Chip & Ellen Perfect for
allowing us to use their parking lots and
facilities at Greendale Cinemas & Perfect North
Slopes. Congratulations to Chip & Ellen Perfect
who took 1st Place in the event driving a 2008

Land Rover Cincinnati Adventure
Road Rally
October 18, 2009
The Land Rover Cincinnati group always has a good time on the four wheel drive Rallies.
The Land Rover vehicle was built to work and play in the mud and these vehicles are used
extensively in Europe and Africa on roads that basically look like foot trails. Land Rover has
evolved quite a bit in the last 50 years from a bare bones four wheel drive unit to what is
now the most luxurious off road vehicle on and off the road!
Using our “Return to Devil’s Staircase” road course the teams began the crisp, clear day
visiting Busse’s fruit/vegetable market before crossing an old iron bridge leading into the
badlands. Although this course is our easiest four wheel drive route, it still can be a challenge
to people who are unfamiliar with fording streams. Our one crossing is usually 18” deep with
very slow moving water but during heavy rains this creek can and does easily flash flood
rising up to 5 feet deep within the scope of a
few minutes! Included on this course was a
covered bridge, a tunnel and of course the
Devil’s Staircase which didn’t claim any
victims...this time!
We would like to thank Katy Goetzel of
Land Rover Cincinnati for organizing the event
and doing such a great job with notifying her
customers of the Road Rally. Congratulations to
Ray & Stephanie Depa for taking 1st Place in

The Haunted Tunnel Road Rally
October 24, 2009
This year we totally revamped The Haunted Tunnel road tour from start to finish and it
turned out for the best. For starters we began the tour at the picnic shelter on Skyline Drive
which immediately cut out 70 miles of driving from our original course which began in Brown
County State Park. With the reduction in overall miles, we were able to start the Rally a
couple of hours later than usual and the teams were much more refreshed when they ended
back at the picnic shelter.
This year we had a great surprise when Tony & Leigh Lombardi informed me that just 5
miles from the start they spotted a Bald Eagle and its nest! Sure enough, several of the
teams were lucky enough to see the Eagle and many people were able to take some pretty
good pictures of this beautiful bird.
In addition to the Bald Eagle the teams visited the Medora Covered Bridge, the Medora
Brick Kilns, the only surviving pre-civil war high school in the State of Indiana, several old iron
bridges, a really neat foot bridge and of course the Haunted Tunnel!
When I arrived at the Medora Covered Bridge I ran into a man by the name of Morris
Tipton who like us is a big fan of the old bridge. Morris is basically the driving force behind
raising money and awareness to save the longest historical covered bridge in the United
States. For several years we have been offering, unsuccessfully to do a fundraiser Road Rally
for Jackson County in order to raise much needed funds for the bridge restoration. Morris and
several other organizations have also offered to raise funds but have had little or no backing
from the powers that be. So Scenic Road Rallies, LLC will join forces with Morris Tipton and
his group to get this bridge put back together.
In the coming months we will be
working with Morris and his group
to have a huge fundraising event
in 2010 near the bridge. We’ll
keep everyone up to date and we
would
appreciate
any
help,
physically or financially that you
can offer to this project. Keep an
eye
on
our
monthly

newsletters for information on this
project.

Sunman Area Life Squad Fundraiser
Road Rally
November 22, 2009
What could be better than having a pancake & sausage breakfast and then taking a
relaxing drive in the country before stopping to see and play with a pack of Wolves? I think
this is a hard one to top but that’s exactly what we did on Sunday, November 24th in
Sunman, Indiana.
Each year the Sunman Area Life Squad holds a fundraiser pancake and sausage breakfast
to raise much needed funds for their department. About a year ago Bev & I approached the
department with an offer to run a fundraiser Road Rally where 100% of the donations would
go to their department. Over the past year we have been working with Paul Tyrer of the
Sunman Life Squad who put a tremendous amount of work into this project
The morning of the Rally was great with temps in the low 40’s which is fantastic for the
end of November. Many of the teams ate breakfast before they started their journey which
included a restored one room school house, a phantom bridge, several neat little towns and a
visit to Kathy & Terry’s Wolf Creek Habitat. Once arriving at the Wolf sanctuary, several team
members including Jackie, Jeni & John chose to enter the Wolf enclosures for a chance to get
up close and personal with these great animals.
First off, we would like to thank
everyone who came out and donated to
the department! This is an all volunteer
Life Squad who takes time out of their
busy lives to do what most people can’t
or won’t do to help other people in their
time of need. We would like to thank
Paul Tyrer with the Sunman Area Life
Squad for all of his hard work to get
this event up and running. Thanks Paul!
Congratulations to Carrie & Nancy
Ankenman and Nick Werner for taking
first place in the event with their 2004

Return to Devil’s Staircase 4 X 4
Road Rally
November 28, 2009
Our last event of the year ended the season on a high
Rally on the Indiana back roads surrounded by friends, some
years! Our four wheel drive events, by nature, are always the
the number of things that can or will go wrong. However, this
finish!
note with a perfect 4 X 4 Road
who I haven’t seen in almost 30
most difficult due to logistics and
event was beautiful from start to
We had 41 teams participate on our oldest road course on the books. Originally designed
almost 10 years ago the course was 95% gravel, dirt and mud. Things have changed over the
years in Dearborn County and with the the tax revenue from people winning at the Casino
Boat (Nobody ever looses!) almost every road in the county is now paved, including most of
this route. We still have our three stream crossings, the tunnel, the Devil’s Staircase and the
covered bridge which when all combined
attracts a crowd of four wheelers!
We would like to thank Wayne, Robin &
Brandon Gibson along with Roger Marling for
being our Security Detail at the stream
crossings. We would also owe our gratitude to
our Support Teams, Dan & Lori Rensing and
Jason Agoston who did a great job with the
scoring after the Rally. Thanks everyone!
Congratulations to Greg Best and Todd &
