About Our Community
S
yracuse, Indiana is a town of approximately 3,000 year
round residents. It is in Turkey Creek Township, which
increases the population to approximately 9,000. The environment
in
Syracuse is that
of an active small
town,
making
Syracuse a fantastic place to live or
visit. It sits in the
northeastern corner of Kosciusko
County, with easy
access from US 6
to SR 13 on the north and from US 30 to SR 13 on the
south. Syracuse has a total area of 3 square miles, of which,
2.2 sq. miles of it is land and 0.8 sq. miles of it is water.
Syracuse is the home to Syracuse Lake and its larger brother
Lake Wawasee; there are seven lakes in and around the
town, making it a water lover’s paradise. Because of the wonderful lakes in our community, the population of Syracuse
increases drastically every summer from Memorial Day thru
Labor Day.

lakes.
During the
winter months; ice
skating, ice fishing,
skiing, snow kiting,
snowmobile
riding
and in January we host
the
Snowmobile
Drags during our
Winter Carnival. The
summer months of
course offer great
opportunities on the lake. We kick off our summer with the
Annual Cruise In & Car Show which just completed its
23rd year. This event is held on the 3rd weekend in May
each year. July is the most popular month here in Syracuse
with the “Big, Bang, Boom”, a great place to celebrate the
4th of July holiday! The following weekend is the annual

SummerFest,
which is filled with events
for the entire family, from
community-wide
garage
sales to pet parade, live
music, art fair and MUCH
more! All summer long from
May–October, our Memorial
Park hosts an Artisan &
Farmer’s
Market
each
Saturday from 9 am–2 pm anything that is home grown or handmade you can find
here! Fall Harvest Festival in October and Holiday Magic in

November are both great events for residents and visitors
alike. Many other activities are going on throughout the

Syracuse is the headquarters of the Wawasee School
Corporation teaching students in grades K-12. It is the location of Administration, Wawasee High School, Syracuse
Elementary and Wawasee Middle School. Other schools in
the corporation are located in the towns of Milford and
North Webster.
Syracuse maintains a very fine system of parks. The
Syracuse Community Center is the hub of activity for the
entire family. It is located adjacent to Lakeside Park, which
includes a large public beach, restrooms, gazebo, skate park,
playground and shelter. The SCC provides programming for
all ages from kids to seniors. Park Rhythms is a fantastic program that runs through the summer at Lakeside Park…every
Thursday night at 7pm, residents and visitors are able to sit
and listen to great live music. The Syracuse Parks
Department
is
working with the
Syracuse
Trails
Committee and
they are committed to constructing and maintaining a trail system
that continues to
enhance our community.
Syracuse has
recently become a popular place for art enthusiasts as well.
With several art galleries in our community, you can literally see artwork by artists from all over the world! All the galleries house handcrafted art of all kinds by local artists as
well. Syracuse offers many other unique shops, from
antiques, to outdoor sporting equipment, to men’s and ladies
apparel. Come “Discover Syracuse” . . . a community where
you will want to “Stay & Play”!

SYRACUSE PARK FACILITIES
Syracuse maintains a very fine system of parks to add to the recreational opportunities enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. The
Syracuse Community Center is a hub of activity for the whole family from seniors to children. It is located adjacent to Lakeside Park
and includes a gym/multipurpose room, oversized kitchen, Senior
Wing, Town Museum, and computer lab.
LAKESIDE PARK
Lakeside Park dates back to the 1930’s when the area was filled and
leveled to prepare the park in anticipation of Syracuse’s centennial. It is now the largest of the town parks and includes many trees,
a beach, restrooms, gazebo and shelter. Family reunions, weddings
and concerts are all popular activities at the park. Hot summer days
find busy lifeguards overseeing the swimmers that flock to the
beach.
Many activities are planned each year for the parks. These
include concerts, weddings, family reunions, a fishing tournament and much more. Volunteers spend many hours planting
and maintaining all of the beautiful flowers seen in the parks
and setting up colorful lights for the Christmas season.

Department
HENRY WARD PARK
Henry Ward Park is located on the Turkey Creek Channel just off
of Syracuse Lake. The park is named for Henry Ward, a Syracuse
founder. The site was once used by the B&O Railroad to provide
water from Syracuse Lake for its steam engines. The park now has
a pavilion, restrooms, fishing pier and playground equipment.
Also, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources has provided a
public boat ramp.
CROSSON MILL PARK
Crosson Mill Park, also known as Veteran’s Memorial Park at
Crosson Mill, is named for Samuel Crosson, another founder of
Syracuse. The park was the site of early gristmills that utilized
waters from Syracuse Lake and Lake Wawasee to generate their
power. A city-owned dam is now located in the park which controls the water levels in both lakes. Fishermen of all ages can be
found at this park throughout the summer. The new memorial
clock serves as a reminder of heroes who lived in our area. A new
pavilion was added in 2008, donated by the Laudeman family.

Hoys Beach – located on Front St. in Syracuse, is a small
public beach on Syracuse Lake to swim and picnic.
The Skate Park – located behind the Syracuse
Community Center, just across from the Syracuse Public
Beach.
The Municipal Pier is located at the curve where E. Main
St. turns into N. Long Dr. in Syracuse. This pier is donated by
Sudlow’s Pier Shop of Syracuse for boats to dock and walk to
the downtown area to shop and dine.

Historical
Museum has
been offering a
glimpse back in time for the Lakeland area since 1987. It was
founded with funds gained from the Syracuse SesquiCentennial Celebration and occupied a room in the Syracuse
Public Library until June 2002, when it moved to its current
location.
The main attraction at the museum, the Mier Car, is available on a postcard for purchase, only $1 plus tax.

Syracuse. Normal operating hours are from 1 to 5 pm EST
Monday through Friday. (Call to schedule another time for a

Voters Registration
To register to vote it is required that you be a U.S. Citizen, 18
years of age by the time of the general election, a resident of the
township for at least 60 days and a resident of the precinct 30 days
by the day of the fall general election. Applications are available at
the Syracuse Library, the township assessor’s office and the town
clerk’s office. You must be registered at least 30 days prior to the
election. Primary Election is held on the first Tuesday after the first
Monday in May of each year in which a general election is held, at
which time state, county, city, town or township officials are elected. General Election is held on the first Tuesday after the first
Monday in November following the Primary.
Driver’s License and Automobile Registration
Those who are new to the state of Indiana must obtain an Indiana
Driver’s License and register their vehicle within 60 days of their
arrival to the state. Both a written and visual test must be passed.
The old license, social security card, birth certificate and a bill
with the new address are required. Instruction manuals may be
obtained from the License Bureau or at the BMV website,
www.in.gov/bmv. The closest BMV to Syracuse is 2888 Frontage
Rd., Warsaw, IN 46580 and their phone number is 574-267-8881.
They are closed on Mondays.
Automobile Registration
You can renew your license plate online at www.in.gov/bmv or at
www.mybmv.gov; or you can visit the BMV located at 2888
Frontage Rd., Warsaw IN 46580.
Registering Your Boat or PWC IC 9-31-3
You must have an Indiana certificate of registration and a validation decal to legally operate a watercraft on public waters in
Indiana unless:
• The watercraft is non-motorized (watercraft using an electric
trolling motor requires registration)
• It is registered in another state and has operated on Indiana
waters for not more than 60 consecutive days

Fishing and Hunting
A license is required in the state of Indiana of anyone over the age
of 16 who wishes to fish. Anyone intending to hunt will need a
license regardless of age. Licenses may be obtained at most sporting
goods stores.

Chamber Benefits
Referrals: The chamber receives many calls, letters and emails
requesting specific needs. These requests are referred to Chamber
member businesses. Chamber members receive a competitive
advantage over non-members.
Newsletter: The Chamber provides a bi-weekly
e-newsletter to help keep its members informed about what’s
going on in the community and within the Chamber.
Networking: The Chamber hosts several networking events
throughout the year. Chamber members can attend at a discounted price, non-members pay full price. Events alternate between
breakfast and lunch. Speed Networking is held from 7:30am 9am and the Networking Luncheon from 11:30am - 1pm. Many
other Chamber events offer opportunities to make valuable business contacts.

Annual Golf Outing: The Annual Chamber Golf Outing is

June each year.
Annual Membership Dinner: Annual gathering of chamber
members each January to hear accomplishments of the organization. New board members are announced during this event.

Ambassadors: Chamber Ambassadors work constantly to
enhance the entire organization in their day to day personal

active role in local, state and national legislation that encourages

It’s been a busy year!
Projects Completed
• Constructed Pickwick Rd. trail/boardwalk/bridge from main channel to East Shore/Cornelius Rd.
• Constructed Pickwick Rd. trail from State Rd. 13 ( Dairy Queen)
to Harkless Dr. (Miller’s Merry Manor)
• Constructed additional Syracuse Lake trail segments along North
Shore and East Shore drives
• Constructed a scenic parking area on Pickwick segment for more
convenient trail access.
• Negotiated a gift of land from Parker Hannifin to construct
Pickwick trail from Wawasee H.S. to S.R. 13
• Retained engineering firm to do preliminary feasibility study on
State Route 13 trail segments.
• Worked closely with county to solve a chronic flooding problem
clearing permitting on a key trail route.
• Construction of Pickwick Rd. trail from Wawasee H.S. to S.R.13 with a bridge over McConnell Ditch

Syracuse-Wawasee Trails has made a long term commitment to construct
and maintain a trail system that will enhance our community. It will provide a safe pathway for walking, jogging, bicycling and skating. It will foster family-friendly activities that are healthy. And it will offer an alternative transportation system that will help alleviate traffic congestion.

progress, particularly the recently opened Pickwick-Mudd Lake
segment. We trust that the bridge and boardwalk sections, the
wetlands overlook and pedestrian crossings are proof that the Trail
Committee is committed to building a first class recreational system. Our goal is to create a community asset which will add value
and quality of life for our community.
Not a single tax dollar has been used to build our trails. The over
$600,000 which has been spent to date has come from foundations and private and business gifts. However, the funds we have
remaining are committed to finishing current projects and to
maintain what we have already built.
