New Shelter Progress to Warm Your Heart… If you have driven past River’s Edge Farm in the past few months, you may have noticed
that our new shelter is becoming a reality, especially the exterior! The third phase of
construction is nearing completion! By the end of this month, the new building will be
weather tight, with all doors and windows in place. The interior piping is installed and
the last bit of the concrete slab is being poured. The driveways, walkways and septic
system will be in place. The utilities have been connected as you can see by the lovely
lighting effect in the evening hours. Additionally, we’re installing our furnaces to make
sure that concrete cures properly and to be ready to work inside during the winter
months. While this is such amazing progress, and we have so much to be grateful
for this holiday season, we still have a ways to go and much more money to raise
to complete the interior of our new shelter so that the animals can join us in their
new surroundings. Our Board of Directors knew when we began
the construction of our new building that we
would need to proceed with a “pay as we go”
plan, phasing construction as we raised funds. It
was recognized that phasing the project would allow
us to start construction sooner and would help us to
move the project along more quickly. It was understood that visible progress
would best show our organization’s commitment to moving the animals out of
the old State Rte. 54 shelter. As we reach out to individuals and groups throughout
the county who share our love and concern for animals, we are seeing a lot of
excitement and interest about the new shelter due in large part to the significant
and tangible headway that has been made towards this long overdue dream. It is by
garnering the support of people like you that the shelter building project and River’s
Edge Capital Campaign will reach its full completion. As you may have read in a previous newsletter, the design of the new shelter
meets or exceeds the Association of Shelter Veterinarian’s guidelines for standards
of care in animal shelters. It has many features that will further enhance the
overall health and well-being of our orphan animal friends while they await
adoption, and it provides critical space for human - animal interaction. It will be
able to house approximately 20% more animals at any given time in more spacious
accommodations. The new shelter will also feature some communal living areas for
both felines and canines to enjoy more opportunities for social interactions and exercise.
Additionally, it will have built-in flexibility to house even more animals (Continued)

New Shelter Progress (Continued)
for a short time in the event of a large scale rescue and during peak holding periods e.g. kitten season. The new structure
was built to attract and encourage human visitation as well, which will help move adoptable animals through the shelter more
quickly. This will allow us to provide for even more orphan animals annually.

The new shelter will not house all the homeless animals in our area. A facility of that size
would be colossal, and we could never afford to build or operate it. This is why we engaged
professional assistance to help us carefully study and size the new shelter. More importantly, this
is why the FLSPCA is so dedicated to its mission of strengthening the human-companion animal
bond. Preserving this special connection contributes to the health and well-being of both
animals and people. And, it is when this bond breaks, that our animal friends are in the greatest
need of protection! Humane education, spay/neuter & wellness clinics, canine training, and fun
classes all help to support this important bond and work at the root of companion animal overpopulation and homelessness.
Our programs are proactive, as they help to prevent our four-legged friends from ever becoming abandoned and needing to
enter a shelter in the first place. We believe we have “right-sized” the shelter and incorporated state of the art knowledge of
shelter animal care so that we have a facility that will serve our community for many years into the future. ( ) My check is enclosed. (Please make check payable to Finger Lakes SPCA)
The FLSPCA has never had a capital campaign in its 60 year history. We have never gone to the community and asked them
to reach deep and give above and beyond their already generous levels of giving. So now you ask, “How much still needs to
be raised?” The total campaign is $2.6 million, of which we have already raised a sizeable $1.4 million.
These funds helped us purchase River’s Edge Farm, pay for architectural and engineering
plans, set aside a reserve for the future, and pay for the first three phases of construction.
The remaining $1.2 million will allow us to complete the interior construction, purchase interior
furnishings and pay off our existing mortgage. Our Capital Campaign Committee is pursuing multiple strategies to reach our goal, grant requests being one of them.
In August, we received good news from the Fred and Harriet Taylor Foundation, who has been a long time supporter of the
FLSPCA, that our funding request for this project had been approved for $200,000, $100,000 given in 2014 and the remainder
in 2015 as the project progresses. Other requests to local foundations have been submitted. Appeals have been made to some
local corporate partners and we are awaiting the outcome of those. We are also offering for a specified donation the opportunity to name a
part of the shelter in memory of a departed pet or loved one or to honor
a loved one or pet still with us. A named space will be identified by a
plaque to acknowledge the importance of your contribution to making
our dream a reality. If you are interested in more information about
how to contribute in this manner, please contact us. Our volunteers, staff and supporters will continue to work in this
upcoming year to bring this project to fruition. We would be happy
to meet with you or a group you are a member of to discuss the
campaign and the building project in more detail. Moreover, as we
progress further through the campaign, we will be appealing to our
community as a whole to provide support. Please keep watching the
media and shelter publications for those details. It is only with the help of you, our loyal supporters and donors, and the support
of our community that the new shelter will be built. We look forward to 2015 to be a year to remember; the year we open our
doors to welcome the animals to their new home while awaiting their forever homes. ( ) No thank you/receipt needed. Save the postage for the animals.

Katie’s Fund
This handsome 8 week old kitten
came to us with a URI, conjunctivitis
and loaded with parasites. He was
tiny and weak. This determined little
boy also had a polyp in his throat
which was making it very hard
for him to eat and gain weight.
A surgery was required to remove
the polyp. Thanks to Katie’s Fund
this handsome and loving boy
- received this vital surgery and
needed medical care. And, as a
healthy kitten, he was then chosen
for adoption by a family!
Planned Giving
Whether you have a million dollar
estate or a more modest one, you need
an estate plan. A good estate plan
provides for your loved ones, minimizes
tax liabilities and provides “Planned
Gifts” of your assets to support your
favorite charities. Many planned giving
opportunities exist to suit almost any
circumstance. As you consider the
final disposition of your assets,
please remember all of your friends
at the Finger Lakes SPCA.

When my cat died just three months after my
husband and a month after I had sold a beloved
historic house that had been in my family for
decades, I did not think that I could risk sharing
my heart with another animal. But after spending
a Fourth of July alone in my new apartment, I knew I
wanted other living beings around me. I drove to the FLSPCA the
next weekend “just to take a look.” A gray, long-haired kitten who was just 3
months old captured my heart. Even when I was told by a staff member that
she had lost an eye, I knew she was mine. (Born in unfavorable conditions,
she had developed severe conjunctivitis. Funds from the new Katie’s Fund at
the shelter, which pays for veterinary care for seriously ill animals, had made
the operation possible.) I named her Juniper after a gentle, poetic, but slightly
flawed, heroine in a favorite novel. A month later, I brought home a 3-monthold short-haired kitten with six toes on each paw plus a dew claw (According
to sailors, polydactyl cats bring good luck.). I named him Shiva after the multiarmed Hindu god, the King of Dance. He had been bottle-fed from the age of
2 weeks by FLSPCA Executive Director Vicki Mosgrove and loves to kiss people.
Juniper has grown into a loving Maine Coon cat who
at seven months weighs 12 pounds! Shiva was
climbing a six-foot ficus tree almost immediately.
They both make me laugh as they play with anything
I happen to drop and run around with boxes or bags
over their heads. I’m so glad I was alone on the
Fourth of July….and did something about it.

Janet Gressel grew up with her parents and an older sister
in the town of Waverly, NY. After high school graduation, she
worked at the Tioga General Hospital in Medical Records
as a file clerk and typist. After four years, she relocated to
the Bath area and worked at the Steuben County Infirmary
in the Dietary Department for 19 years. During that time,
she commuted evenings to Broome Community College
where she received a Dietary Manager’s Certificate. In 1999,
Janet changed jobs and was employed at the County Office
Building in the Personnel Department. She retired in 2010
with 31 years of service as a Steuben County employee.
When asked what advice she might give to a potential
volunteer she says, I would tell people to try to put aside their
feelings of not being able to work with the animals because
it makes them too sad. It bothers us all, but we need to
think about how the animals are feeling in their cages and
do whatever we can to make their lives happier, even for a
few minutes a day, as they wait to find a home. If you truly
struggle with working directly with the animals, there are
dozens of other volunteer activities you can become a part
of to make the program stronger which will have the same
end result.
Janet loves animals and has three pet dachshunds named
Holly, Max and her FLSPCA shelter rescue, Gracie. She says
that her favorite experience at the SPCA was when she came
to work with the cats one day and she saw what appeared to
be a strange looking cat in one of the cages. It turned out to
be Gracie, who was such a small little dachshund dog that
she could not be put in with the other dogs and ended up in
the cat area. Gracie was not very happy with her past home
and not happy about being regarded like a cat. For several
weeks she did not really want to be friends with anyone,
but Janet spent time with her each week and eventually
took her out walking on the Strides for Strays/Strut Your
Mutt annual event. After that, they became best friends and
Gracie found her forever home.
Janet is a very loyal, dependable volunteer and she is a
pleasure to work with. We want to thank her for all that she
has done for the FLSPCA. She has made a major difference
in the smooth-running success of our operations and the
happiness of all the animals she works with at our shelter.
In her spare time, Janet likes to read, watch movies, and
listen to classic rock music, bake and bicycle. On occasion in
the summer, you might find her at an antique car show being
especially enthusiastic about the 1950 and 1960 Corvettes.
She belongs to the local Quota Club and volunteers at the
Hammondsport Library.
Janet has been an FLSPCA volunteer since 2011. She covers
three areas of our operations: animal care, clerical and
fundraising. Each week, she comes to the shelter to feed,
water, socialize and groom the cats and kittens. On another
day each week, she works at the River’s Edge location doing
clerical work. Throughout the year she is highly active in all
our events and fundraisers and helping with the mailings.
Denice, Barry is now Gomez and
he is an awesome boy.
He loves me and doesn’t
quite like to share me,
whether it be with the doggies or my
son and husband. He sleeps in my bed snuggled
up under the covers. He doesn’t mingle with the
puppies at all and still freaks out over little things like
the alarm going off, the vacuum cleaner, loud noises
and moved furniture, lol, so we have not proceeded
with a friend yet. We’re hoping to do that soon. He is a
blessing in my home and I am so thankful he is mine! Bea

WAY S T O G I V E
Dear Shelter Staff,
My mom and pop are the best! And, my pack
mate is my very best friend! He is blind, but
he likes to play and romp with me just the
same. We play herding games because we are both
Border Collies. We also like to play king of the mountain in the
snow, tug of war and gentle jaws (pretend we are biting each other – but
not really biting).
When I first came to my new house, mom and pop said it was for foster care.
I was a little confused and anxious, as I didn’t know what foster care meant.
I was used to living on a farm and sleeping in a barn. I didn’t know much
about living in a house or about what would be expected of me.
But, I soon learned this family needed me a lot (especially the dog - Fin) and
that I was meant to be their new family-member. I’ve learned many things
about living in a house now and about my new family…Just to name a few
things: There are always enough toys, food and love for all the animals in the
house (including me). Admittedly, I was a little worried about this at first. I get
lots of praise for staying in the yard and waiting at all doors. Chewing on my
pop’s woodworking projects makes him sad and is not allowed. Chewing on
marrow bones are okay. But, I should not take Fin’s marrow bone from him.
It is fun to go for walks with my new family and explore – especially once you
get the hang of walking on a leash. My mom told me not to herd the cats that
live inside with us…I learned to listen to her about that – they have
sharp claws.
I am the leader of the dogs. Fin really needed my help to keep an eye on
things – being not very good at seeing. My jobs at my new house include
keeping the neighbor’s dogs in their yard and all the squirrels in the trees.
I also greet people at my mom’s work. Oh, I almost forgot to mention, one
of my most important jobs is helping Fin to make sure my mom knows when it
is time to start the day. We both give her the Border Collie stare and paw
at her to keep her on schedule.
I have taught my family things too – especially that they could love another
dog as much as they love Fin. Thank you for helping me get to a family that
was just right for me! I’ll never forget you!
Love, Fiona
P.S. My nickname is “Ona”. It is my mom’s special name for me.

It is that special time of year when we count our
blessings and reach out to those who are less fortunate.
I am overwhelmed when thinking about all the special
kindnesses, hard work and generosity that have been
shared with the FLSPCA all throughout this year. We are

life insurance to make a gift because it
allows them to make a gift much larger
than they thought possible.

FLSPCA PROGRAMS
Donate A Vehicle
Dear Friends,
During this holiday season, I also tend to reflect about the
thousands of animals that have been provided lifesaving
help by our agency over this year and years past. I also
think a lot about the value of our programs that help to
strengthen the human-companion animal bond. Preserving
this special connection via our programs - prevents animals
from ever needing to enter a shelter and contributes to
the health, happiness and well-being of both animals and
people. Some of our most important programs:
Canine Training & Fun Classes Studies indicate that
dogs that attend obedience classes are much less likely
to be relinquished to a shelter. Classes help humans to
communicate more effectively with their canine companions
and offers socialization and exercise opportunities for both.
Project Catnip Devoting resources to spaying and
neutering is the most cost effective and humane way to
reduce feline overpopulation in our community. Project
Catnip provides low-cost spay/neuter services and rabies
vaccinations for cats of families in Steuben County. The
program also provides support to good Samaritans working
to help control homeless cat populations.
Wellness Clinic This program helps to avert companion
animals having to be relinquished to a shelter by their
family due to an economic hardship. It also helps to protect
animals from the suffering that can occur from the delay in
treatment of routine health issues. A licensed veterinarian
provides preventive and routine veterinary care for cats and
dogs of income qualifying families.
CHESTER
MARTY
Humane Education Teaching empathy toward other
beings is essential to raising kind, compassionate citizens.
This program helps to create a kind and caring community
that encourages the humane treatment and responsible
guardianship of animals. Because animal cruelty has been
shown to be a common childhood precursor to other violent
crimes, one of the focal points of this program is to work
with area students to help reinforce the importance of
respect and empathy toward companion animals.
Animal Cruelty Investigations This program integrates
community education and awareness with criminal
investigative work and law enforcement. The primary
function of this program is to protect animals from abuse
and neglect by providing education about proper animal
care. Arrests are made when necessary.
This year we also significantly expanded our outreach
and services to include TNVR (Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate
& Return) assistance for several large and at risk feral
cat populations. You will hear more about this
in our next newsletter.
As you celebrate the season and move into the New Year,
I hope you will also continue to support our Mission and
these vital programs which reduce suffering, save lives and
make our community kinder and safer. I’m also hopeful you
will remember our orphan animal friends that are awaiting
adoption at our shelter.
On behalf of the animals and people we help, thank you
so much for your spirit of charity and compassion! And,
from my family (two-legged and four-legged) to yours
Happy Holidays!
Sincerely,
Vicki S. Mosgrove, E.D.

Corning Catering
Corning Catering has been an integral part of our
Paws & Pairings signature fundraising event over
many years. The business has provided catering
services at donated or reduced cost and has always
provided partner support for various FLSPCA
events by generously donating certificates for silent
auctions, raffles and door prizes. Most recently,
Corning Catering provided their quality catering
services at the Glenwood Club for a reception
and discussion of FLSPCA’s new building project.
Additionally, the proprietor, Bill Spaulding, willingly
turned himself in for our 2014 Corral for Cash
fundraiser and did an excellent job of raising “bale”
with all proceeds benefiting FLSPCA’s animal care
programs! We are so grateful to Corning Catering
for helping us to raise needed funds, for adding
a special and quality touch to our events and for
always being willing to lend a hand!
