The Downeaster train makes round trips daily
from Boston’s North Station to Brunswick, Maine
with a station stop in Wells.
WELCOME TO WELLS
Beautiful and historic Wells continues to be one of
the finest family vacation spots anywhere, offering
seven miles of coastline, the nationally recognized
Wells Estuarine Research Reserve at Laudholm
and the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Preserve.
Recreational activities include kayaking, canoeing,
fishing, sailing and surfing. Miles of paths are
available for hiking, biking and strolling and
numerous golf courses are located in the area.
Local events and craft fairs are held at various
times of the year and are open to the public.
Lodging choices abound from cozy B&B’s to fine
hotels and resorts as well as campgrounds with
options of simple tenting sites to full service
for recreational vehicles. Dining selections
include lobster and clam shacks, family-friendly
restaurants and fine dining establishments.
The area offers historic sites, lighthouses,
antique shops, collectible bookstores, outlet
stores and general retail stores for every taste
and budget.
The Wells Regional Transportation Center is
home to the Downeaster Passenger Train
operated by Amtrak which runs from Boston’s
North Station to Brunswick, Maine. The center
is served by taxis and an in-season trolley
service. Parking is FREE.

THINGS TO DO
7 MILES OF OCEANFRONT
In the Town of Wells, there are four
beautiful sandy beaches. Wells Beach,
Crescent Beach and Drake’s Island
Beach are open to the public, while
Moody Beach is private.
Public Restrooms are available and
lifeguards are on duty, 7 days a week
from June through September.
Public Parking Lots are located at the
end of Mile Road; the Eastern Shore at
the end of Atlantic Avenue; the Jetty
and Gross Lot at Drakes Island and the Gold
Ribbon Lot on Webhannet Drive. Fees for parking
apply from 8am-5pm Memorial Day through
Columbus Day. Lots are open from 6am-11pm
daily. All beach lots close at 11pm and are
locked up by the Wells Police Department.
Overnight parking is prohibited.
Parking Fees: Pay and Display Meters. $20 all
day (8am-5pm); $12 half day (noon-5pm); $3
per hour at Mile Road and Gold Ribbon Lots.
These lots are hourly only. $10 per visit extra for
vehicles that are 15 passenger vans in vehicle
size or larger (RV’s or campers are allowed at
Eastern Shore and Gross Lot only). $8 per day
for motorcycles and other 2-wheel motorized
vehicles. $80 for a 5-day weekly pass at Meters
only. The Pay and Display Meters will accept
credit and debit cards as well as coins. No paper
currency will be accepted due to the ocean/salt

Dogs are restricted from the beach
areas from 8:00am to 6:00pm from
June 16 to September 15. After
6:00pm to 8:00am, dogs are allowed on the
beach and must be on a leash and under the
charge of a responsible person. Disposal bags
and containers for dog waste are located at
many of the beach entrances. Exceptions: Does
not apply to seeing eye dogs or other dogs
assisting an individual with a disability.

RECREATION
Rachel Carson National Wildlife
Refuge offers hiking on their onemile Carson Trail which meanders
through pine woods and offers views
of expansive, tidal saltmarshes.
Leashed pets are allowed on the Trail.
The refuge also offers wildlife observations,
photography, interpretive programs, hunting and
limited boating opportunities. 207-646-9226
Wells Reserve at Laudholm
The Reserve’s 7 miles of trails provide
spectacular views and access to
woodlands, fields, wetlands, beach
and dunes. The gentle terrain is ideal
for casual hikers, cross-country skiers
and snowshoers. The varied landscape
is prized by artist, photographers and
nature lovers of every age.

Wells Harbor is operated by the Town
of Wells and contains a private marina
offering canoe and kayak rentals, fishing
bait and tackle. Boats on trailers can be
launched from the Harbor for a fee. No
fees apply to the launching of kayaks,
canoes or sailboards. 207-646-3236
Wells Harbor Community Park includes the
Hope Hobbs Gazebo, the Wells Rotary Pavilion,
the Jeffrey Thompson Memorial Playground, the
Knights of Columbus handicapped accessible
observation deck, bocce ball and horseshoe
courts. Free summer concerts are held every
Saturday evening from July to Labor Day. Some
of these facilities can be rented for private parties

Wells Recreation Park consists of 70 acres which
includes nature trails, soccer fields, baseball fields,
a playground, tennis courts, basketball courts,

Schoolhouse Division No. 9
The Schoolhouse was built by the Town of Wells
between 1899-1901 on a half acre of land at a
total cost of $848.72. The Town restored the site
in 1976. It stands today as it did over 100 years
ago. The Schoolhouse is located on Route 9 about
5 miles from Route 109. Tours of the Schoolhouse
are by appointment only. Call Wells Town Hall at
207-646-5113 x200 to schedule a tour.
Bridge of Flowers at Webhannet Falls Park
A joint endeavor of the Webhannet Garden Club
and the Historical Society of Wells & Ogunquit,
recognizes the site where Edmund Littlefield
established the first permanent mills on the
Webhannet River in 1640-1641. It is located on
Route 1, south of the Coast Village Inn & Cottages.
LOCAL MONUMENTS
Storer Park commemorates the battle between
the French, Indians and Wells’ early residents. This
small park is on Route 1 adjacent to the Garrison
Suites.
North of Howe’s Floor Store on the east side of
Route 1, a marker sits at the site of Col. John
Wheelwright’s Garrison at “Town End.” It was
from there that Esther Wheelwright was captured
by Indians and taken to Canada.

GETTING MARRIED IN MAINE
HOW TO GET A MARRIAGE LICENSE
Marriage licenses are issued at the town or city
level. The couple must visit the town office in
person to apply for the marriage license. •If both of you are residents of the state of
Maine, you should both apply at the town
office where at least one of you is a resident.
If you are residents of different Maine towns,
you both may apply in one town or the other
– you do not need to apply separately in each
town.
WEDDING SERVICES
•If one of you is from out of state, then both of
you should apply in the town where one holds
residency.
•If neither of you is a resident of Maine, then
you may apply in any Maine town office. It
need not be the same town where you plan
to be married. You can apply for your marriage
license at the Wells Town Hall Clerks Office
located at 208 Sanford Road (Route 109) in

Your marriage license is valid for 90 days and
can only be used within the State of Maine. There is no waiting period from the time your
license is issued until your wedding can take
place. The person performing the ceremony is
responsible for filing the marriage certificate with

•A person licensed to preach by an association
