Welcome New Members
DSC is growing all the time! In July, new
members and DSC officers, directors and
life members gathered to go through a few
shells − lobster shells, that is. (If you just
joined, don’t worry, you will be included in
next summer’s round of invitations.)
Every month, Camp Talk publishes the
list of new members and sponsors as of the
previous recording period. Be sure to check
that page every month for your name, if you
are new, or if you have sponsored someone.
Invite your family, friends, neighbors and
co-workers and make this club YOUR club.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Quickening The Pace
As summer winds down, the pace of preparation picks up all around us. Moms,
dads and kids are readying for school; teal are swirling in anticipation of leading the
fall migration; elk have shed their velvet and are eyeing their summer-mates with a
look of distrust and dislike in anticipation of the September rut; there’s quickness to
the grizzly bear’s foraging that wasn’t there just a month ago.
That quickened pace is evident at the DSC office too. Ben Carter and his dedicated
staff have shifted into convention mode because Traditions is only four months away.
The DSC 100 volunteers are sorting their committee assignments and preparing for
their next meeting on Oct. 9 in order to be able to continue to show our convention
exhibitors and attendees the hospitality they’ve come to expect.
Meanwhile, in just the last month, DSC has organized and attended meetings in
Newfoundland, New York, Washington, D.C., Bozeman, Dallas and Austin with
stakeholders, wildlife biologists, and government officials in furtherance of its hunter
advocacy mandate. We suspect the ban on elephant ivory trophy imports from
Tanzania and Zimbabwe will be lifted when the good folks at USFWS review an
updated elephant management plan that demonstrates the benefits provided by legal
elephant hunting and healthy and growing elephant populations. Your donations to
DSC are paying for the creation of that plan.
Likewise, the status of the African lion is being decided based on USFWS biologists’
professional review of reams of scientific data and population studies − provided
by DSC and others — that show healthy and growing lion populations in all their
occupied range except West Africa. Wildlife officials and politicians in British
Columbia need research data in order to make a scientific based decision on a proper
Grizzly bear quota. DSC is funding that research.
Closer to home, DSC’s member activity calendar is brimming with opportunities for
those of you in North Texas to take advantage of your membership. Once again, DSC
hosts a dove hunt at the Hailey Ranch near Abilene on Sept. 5-6.
The fall S.A.F.E.T.Y. event, DSC’s signature youth, parent and volunteer hunting
education program, is right around the corner and I hope you choose to participate
Sept. 20 at Greystone Castle in Mingus, Texas. Right now is the right time to call the
DSC office at (972) 980-9800, or sign up online at www.signupgenius.com for a day of
service and camaraderie you won’t soon forget.
Whether it’s the swoosh of a passing flight of teal, that first faint whistle from a
distant bull emanating from a dark basin below, or any one of a thousand other sights
and sounds that are the hunter’s reward, you owe it to yourself and your family to
experience the awe. Now is the time to quicken your pace of hunting adventure, and
pass it on. We at DSC are proud to be a part of your adventure, and prouder still to be
a part of a special community of conservationists whose responsibility is to preserve
opportunity so others can experience the awe.
“Cause they never seen the Northern Lights, they never seen a hawk on the wing…”

HUNTIN G FEATURE By Wade C. Gear
The Little Girl and the Old Ten
There are stories everywhere and
in everything we do. Sometimes,
these stories begin and we don’t
even notice them until we recognize
the ending. We often overlook the
everyday routine when, in reality, we
are in the midst of a story that will
add wonderful lasting memories to
our lives. These events often cement
relationships not only in our lives but
also in the lives of those close to us.
There are stories everywhere and in everything we do. Sometimes, these
stories begin and we don’t even notice them until we recognize the ending.
We often over look the everyday routine when, in reality, we are in the
midst of a story that will add wonderful lasting memories to our lives.
These events often cement relationships not only in our lives but also in the
lives of those close to us.
I didn’t realize it but this story began in October 2011 on a routine trip to
the deer lease to check trail cameras and feed for the upcoming season. We
have a 2,600-acre pasture inside a 14,000 acre high fenced ranch just south
and east of Encinal, Texas in Webb County. While I love game cameras,
we have found that we get a relatively low percentage of our big bucks
on camera so I was very pleased to find an old 10-point that would score
low 150s. I decided right there I wanted to hunt this deer. Throughout the
season, we had many pictures of him at the same feeder but always at night.
I was sure when the rut kicked in, he would make a mistake but as the 2011
season came to a close we still had no daylight sightings.
In 2012, about the same time in October, I again had the same deer on
camera at the same feeder. He was about the same Boone & Crockett score
but was trying to add an eleventh point. We aged him at seven-and-a-half
years old so I knew it would be a good deer to take. Again, he was caught
on camera at night, but occasionally at midday, so once again I spent a lot
of time hunting this deer. It was mid-December and I was sitting in a blind
not too far from where we had regular photos of the deer. I was watching
several nice bucks nosing around some does when suddenly, “my” deer
stepped out and looked directly at me before turning and following a doe
into the brush. It all happened so fast I could not believe I finally saw him,
much less have time to even think about getting my gun up.
The rest of the season progressed with no more sightings of “my” deer.
Finally, on the last weekend of the season, we had invited some guys out to
hunt cull bucks. This is a great group of guys that would love the chance to
hunt more. I was guiding for one of them and took him to the stand where
we had all the pictures of “my” deer, but also where I also knew we had
two great cull bucks. The middle of January is an interesting time in South
Texas as you never know what might show up. It was our last night to hunt
and it was just after 5 p.m. when one of our culls popped out to feed. After
I confirmed this was one of the deer we were looking for, I told my hunter
to get ready and wait for the right shot. For some strange reason I decided
to look behind us and to my surprise, I saw “my” deer standing at 100 yards
feeding.
Now I had a dilemma because I knew if I took this shot, my buddy’s
chances of getting a cull would disappear. After watching him feed for
about two or three minutes (my buddy swears it was an hour), I gave the go
ahead to take the cull. At the shot, I watched as my deer disappeared into
the brush and my only hope was to see if he could make it until 2013.
Late in February 2013, on a routine trip to the ranch to fill our protein

feeders and look for sheds when to our surprise, we found
the matching sheds of “my” deer under his favorite feeder.
We actually had one from the year before but I was so
excited, I felt like I had been rewarded for not shooting him
two months before. We taped him out at just over 150 B&C
with a 20-inch spread and couldn’t believe how gnarled his
bases were with lots of little “points.”
Now fast forward to November 2013, and my first deer
season hunt with my youngest daughter Libby. We arrived
at the ranch late Thursday night so we made a plan to hunt
one of our tower blinds the next morning and then check
the cameras. The morning hunt was slow so we drove the
ranch and pulled all the cards to take back to camp and
look at deer pictures. The first card revealed two nice eightpoints coming into a feeder like clockwork every evening
but it was the next card that held the real surprise. To my
astonishment, I saw a picture of “my” deer just the night
before at his regular location. You could tell he had gone
down in antler but still sported good mass and his body
condition was well past prime.
I explained my excitement to my daughter and we
discussed hunting the two eights or taking a chance on the
old ten. She immediately said she wanted the old ten and
would run the risk of going home empty handed. She liked
that he was old and past his prime but I really think she
knew I was excited about the deer. Because of his nocturnal
feeding habits, I really was worried that we would not see
him but she was set and wanted to get in the stand early just
in case.
It was just before 4 p.m. when we got settled − it was warm
with nothing moving. About 5 p.m. we started to see some
deer and about 5:15, we had a real nice cull buck step out on
the same sendero where my buddy shot his buck on the last
hunt of that season. We talked about her taking that deer
but she was set on the old ten. At about 5:30, I looked down
the sendaro I had last seen “my” buck on in January. To my
surprise, he stepped out at 90 yards in almost the exact same
spot I had last seen him. I slowly turned to my daughter
and said, “shoot that deer right now!” At the shot, the deer
jumped and headed into the brush but after a short walk of
40 yards in the brush, there laid the Old Ten. He was gnarly
and awesome and the best deer my 12-year-old daughter has
ever shot.
After pictures and high fives and text messages to Mom,
we headed back to camp where we scored him just over 135
inches and aged him by his teeth at over eight years old.
Honestly, I couldn’t have had a better hunt and while I was
fortunate enough to harvest my biggest deer to date later
that year ,I still remember every moment of this hunt and
consider it one of my all-time best. I am sure my daughter
is a huge part of this but it was also about chasing the same
deer for three years and after passing on him the end of the
previous season to share that opportunity with her. That was
a true blessing and it was also when I realized that it was the
ending to a story that I didn’t even know had started three
years earlier. CT

DALLAS ECOLO G ICAL FOUNDATION
New Push In Fundraising
Dallas Ecological Foundation, along with Mike Benecke, has
created a new 2014-15 Fundraising Brochure and DVD. The DEF
Board of Trustees contracted Mike’s expert services to create a new
program, which promotes the numerous positive DEF programs,
with the aim to raise funds for supporting these efforts.
Through the Outdoor Adventures (OA) program, wildlife
conservation, outdoor skills, hunter education and competitive
shooting are taught as a full in-school curriculum in physical
education classes. This school year, over 20,000 students in 200
schools in nine states will be taught the full OA curriculum.
Students will spend 180 days in OA classrooms learning about the
importance of hunting and sustainable-use of wildlife along with
competitive shooting and outdoor skills.
The DEF also has a college scholarship program where students
seeking degrees in wildlife conservation will directly benefit from
DEF sponsored scholarships.
The new brochure and DVD will be used to seek donations
from private sources, foundations, wildlife conservation groups
and industry leaders.
If you are interested in a copy of the new brochure or DVD,

DSC Comments
on Zambia Lifting
“Hunting Ban”
Previously closed areas may re-open
When Zambia announced it would
reassess 19 concessions where hunting
had been suspended for two years, some
news outlets reported the country is
lifting its “ban on hunting.” The fact is,
hunting was never banned in Zambia.
Safaris have been legally operating the
entire time. Dallas Safari Club (DSC)
applauds the possible expansion of
hunting operations in Zambia. If
previously closed areas are indeed reopened, top outfitters will be offering
hunts at the upcoming DSC convention
and expo, Jan. 15-18. DSC will pass along
details as they become available. CT

CONSERVATION NEWS
Ivory Ban ‘Assures More Elephants Are Killed’
During a visit to Dallas, Tanzania’s top wildlife official told
the Dallas Morning News that the U.S. ban on importing ivory
would not curb illicit trafficking. Instead, the move “benefits
the poachers. It only assures that more elephants will get
killed.”
Lazaro Nyalandu, minister of Tanzania Natural Resources
and Tourism, was in Dallas for an Aug. 7 meeting with Dallas
Safari Club (DSC) and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
Topics included the African nation’s efforts to slow
poaching. The group exchanged ideas on ways to stop illegal
activities and conserve species such as elephants, rhinos
and lions. But law enforcement is expensive. The U.S. ban
translates to drastic cuts in revenue from licensed, regulated,
sustainable hunting. Reduced funding means less law
enforcement in wildlife areas.
DSC offered to help fund additional game wardens,
training and equipment in Tanzania. The club currently
grants more than $1 million annually for wildlife
conservation causes worldwide.
“We have criticized the ivory ban as a setback for
conservation,” said Ben Carter, DSC executive director, “but
the mainstream media is often quick to dismiss the opinions
and expertise of hunters, as if our only knowledge of wildlife
is how to hunt it. Like everyone else, we want these species to
thrive. So it’s good to see Minister Nyalandu’s words gaining
traction in the news – and hopefully in the minds of all
thinking people who share our concerns about poaching.”
Nyalandu and his colleagues had just attended the Aug. 4
U.S.-Africa Leaders’ Summit in Washington D.C. to discuss
the concerns behind President Obama’s “National Strategy
for Combating Wildlife Trafficking.” The document identifies
three priorities: 1.) Strengthening law enforcement, 2.)
Reducing demand, and 3.) Building international cooperation
and partnerships. For 2014, Obama pledged more than $60
million to support these efforts.
But Tanzanian officials say no funding from the U.S.
government has been received so far, and that licensed,
regulated, sustainable hunting is a reliable source of
conservation funding.
Nyalandu recently revoked all hunting concessions and
licenses issued to Green Mile Safari Co. following evidence of
egregious ethical and legal violations. DSC urged and praised
the move.
Also representing Tanzania at the DSC meeting were Dr.
Freddy Manongi, Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority;
Dr. Simon Mduma, Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute; Ms.
Devotha Mdachi, Tanzania Tourism Board; Pascal Shelutete,
Tanzania National Parks; and Imani Nkuwi, chief of staff for
Nyalandu.
Joining Carter on behalf of DSC were Chris Hudson,
president, and several DSC members. Also attending were
Texas Parks and Wildlife Department officials as well as
staff members of Sen. John Cornyn and Congressman Pete
Sessions. CT
