USSA Sport Directors
USSA Awards Working Group
FROM:
Tom Kelly, Awards WG Liaison
Bill Slattery, Chairman, USSA Awards Working Group
Following is a complete outline of USSA’s organizational awards, designed to honor
athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers for service on behalf of our ski and
snowboard athletes.
This manual is designed to assist you in management of awards selection within your
sport, and to represent your sport in selection of organizational awards. It also includes a
guideline for future awards you may wish to consider in your sport.
As a sport committee chair, sport director, we would like you to be working on your
nominations during the course of the season, so that you can provide detailed
nominations no later than April 4. We will send out nomination information and convene
a conference call on April 10 at 11:00 a.m. mountain time (call in information to be
provided to the working group at a later date) so that the working group can participate in
a discussion of the award nominations.
Thanks for your cooperation!

under which athletes can be successful. These recipients represent the vision and
mission of USSA.
SELECTION PROCEDURE
The selection process for USSA Gold Awards is noted with each award.

development and international programs by a coach resulting in high-level performance
by his or her athletes in competition during the past season. Coaches of the year are

are selected by the USSA awards working group, with ratification by the USSA president
and chairman.

USSA SILVER AWARDS
DR. J. LELAND SOSMAN AWARD
USSA’s J. Leland Sosman Award is presented to a member of the USSA Physicians’
Pool who has made great contributions as a volunteer medical provider. In recognition
of Doc Sosman and his endless commitment as a volunteer for the USSA, this award is
given to an exceptional member of the "medical support team" who has provided
outstanding medical coverage and service to the USSA athletes.
Dr. J. Leland Sosman, known affectionately as 'Sos,' was an U. S. Ski and Snowboard
Association volunteer leader and pioneer for over 50 years. His service to the USSA
and the FIS community was truly legendary. While not a formal member of the
physicians' pool, Sos was known for his energy, persistence and passion for USSA
sports. This award recognizes that individual of the medical community who best
exemplifies these traits.
Nominations for this silver level award are made each year, with a selection being made
through the USSA’s awards selection process.
