2007 USSA Annual Report
FY 2006/07 Annual Report 2 • MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT The United States Ski and Snowboard Association just concluded one of the most important years in its over 100-year history. This achievement is thanks to the generous support of our donors and partners who continue to invest in USSA’s vision to be best in the world, and to the clubs, coaches, officials, parents and tens of thousands of volunteers who have provided leadership to young athletes. The 2006/07 season was highlighted with athletic success at all levels. Through the strong work of the USSA’s 400 clubs, the organization saw an eighth straight year of membership growth. And for the first time in history, we were able to increase athletic funding in a post-Olympic year! TEAM Constituent groups within USSA working in partnership to be the best in the world LOYALTY Steadfast allegiance to USSA’s Vision, Mission, Goals and Values INTEGRITY Steadfast, incorruptible adherence to truth and USSA’s Core Values RESPECT Willing demonstration of care and concern toward others and an open-mindedness toward others’ ideas ACCOUNTABILITY Responsibility of every individual to conduct themselves in accordance with USSA values and expectations PERSEVERANCE Unwavering commitment to the core values in pursuit of USSA’s Vision and Mission The hallmark of the year was the USSA Board of Director’s decision to move forward on a national training and education center – the Center of Excellence – to benefit all of USSA’s stakeholders. The facility will be a world class training center, but will also provide education, sport medicine and sport science to the USSA’s 400 clubs and 30,000 members. Physical conditioning is the cornerstone of any successful athletic program and the Center will provide that for athletes from clubs through the national teams. It’s exciting for all of us to see great results from the World Cup and World Championships. But what really encourages me is when I see strong performance at World Junior Championships, Continental Cups or U.S. athletes being named World Cup Rookies of the Year. It means that our pipeline, comprised of USSA’s grassroots and development programs, is working! Our success stems from great volunteer leadership at all levels of the USSA. We’re appreciative of the vision of our USSA Board and sport committees, now headed by Chairman Dexter Paine, and the enthusiasm of our Foundation Board of Trustees under the leadership of President Jeanne Jackson. As we look to the future, we need to stay focused on our vision. We are striving to be best in the world athletically. But we need to do that in concert with our USSA Core Values. We want to not only create great athletes, but we want to create great people. That’s what Olympism is about! Our focus on being the best and our emphasis on values is why the American public invests in us. It’s why we are nearing the $60 million mark with our Legacy Campaign. It’s why we have corporate sponsors and TV/broadband partners. And it’s why our tens of thousands of volunteers dedicate their time to helping young ski and snowboard athletes achieve their dreams. Thanks for your support! Sincerely, Bill Marolt President and CEO U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association ABOUT USSA • 3 The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association provides opportunities for athletes in the most exciting Olympic action sports. It is driven by a vision to be best in the world with an emphasis on building character through strong personal values. The USSA provides athletic programs in six Olympic sports including alpine skiing, cross country, freestyle, ski jumping, nordic combined, and snowboarding. USSA also manages two Paralympic sports (on behalf of USOC) in disabled alpine and cross country. Programs in each sport include grassroots competitions up through national teams. The USSA has 30,000 members, including over 22,000 athletes. A network of over 50,000 fans and donors provides ongoing support. Membership has continued to increase for eight years, with strong growth in youth membership – nearly half the athletes 13 and under. USSA Club & Competition Network A network of 400 USSA clubs provides opportunities to participate in all levels of skiing and snowboarding competition. The USSA provides education and support to local coaches, officials, parents and volunteers, a local and national calendar of events, competition rules, and a development system to provide for advancement from grassroots up through the national Team. The USSA sanctions over 4,100 events annually. Its focus is to provide the leadership and guidance to support competition venue development, approval of courses, inventory of protection equipment and education of clubs and officials. Over half of USSA sanctioned events are scored to its national ranking lists, providing measurements for athlete advancement. Development competitions in most sports include Junior Olympics (ages 11-19) and international Continental Cups including NorAm Cups, the USSA Alpine Super Series, the Cross Country SuperTour and the Chevrolet Revolution Tour in snowboarding. U.S. championships are conducted in each sport. And USSA’s alpine masters program (21 and older) features over 400 events annually. Over 5,500 parents and volunteers dedicate their time as USSA officials to ensure the best competition environment. USSA Education USSA Education is responsible for providing educational resources and opportunities to over 3,500 member coaches. A multi-level certification program provides training in sport-specific techniques and tactics, sport sciences, and sport management. Based on the national standards for sport coaches, the USSA program uses on-snow clinics, classroom, and online courses to deliver and test over 600 coaches annually. USSA Education has produced over 15 educational CDs and DVDs for use by coaches, parents and athletes. USSA is leading the way in the development of cutting edge, multi-media resources and courses, and is partnering with the USOC, other NGBS, as well as colleges and universities to provide the best training and education possible. USSA Major Events The USSA showcases its sports through national and international competitions including World Cups in alpine, freestyle and snowboarding in 2007, plus the Chevrolet U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix. The events are featured on national and international television and broadband. In 2007, the USSA produced 10-1/2 hours on NBC Sports, 22 hours on Versus, event highlights on Sprint PCS mobile phones plus nearly complete coverage of nearly all international World Cups plus major USSA alpine events on WCSN.com. Events bring strong economic impact to local communities. Recent studies (2005-06 season) showed a $4.56-million local impact for the Birds of Prey Downhill World Cup in Beaver Creek. The Chevrolet Freestyle Invitational in Deer Valley produced a $3.78million impact with $1.97-million for the Breckenridge Grand Prix. The USSA has long been a leader in event production. In February, the USSA and the Tamarack Resort in Idaho pioneered a 22foot halfpipe, the new Olympic standard, for the Chevrolet U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix, drawing the largest day crowd in the resort’s history. 4 • 2006/07 ANNUAL AWARDS Athletes, coaches, clubs and volunteers are recognized for their accomplishments and leadership as a part of the USSA’s annual awards program. public - skiers and snowboarders who want to help young athletes achieve a dream. In fact, unlike programs in many other countries, the USSA is solely funded through private donations, corporate sponsorships and grants - there is no Federal funding. The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team Foundation is the non profit, fundraising arm of the U.S. Ski Team and U.S. Snowboarding. The 501(c)3 Foundation raises money to support year round athlete training, development, competition and educational needs of athletes. The money raised by the Foundation reaches athletes in all sports including: alpine, cross country, disabled, freestyle, ski jumping, nordic combined, and snowboarding. The Foundation’s annual fund programs include: major gifts, special events (including the popular Ski and Snowboard Balls), direct marketing, and the U.S. Ski Team Gold Pass, which offers holders a fully-transferable lift pass to resorts coast-to-coast. And the Foundation’s Legacy Campaign has created an endowment to help build the new Center of Excellence and to fund athletic programs in perpetuity. Julia Mancuso, Cortina World Cup Champion. This year the Foundation provides an opportunity to travel to Cortina with the U.S. Ski Team. 16 • FOUNDATION Legacy Campaign Donors (As of April 30, 2007) The Legacy Campaign is the endowment for USSA’s future. Currently at $52,276,000, the Legacy Campaign will provide for the U.S. Teams in perpetuity. The Center of Excellence represents the strongest commitment to USSA’s athletes, as well as its stakeholders, and embodies the spirit of the sport. USSA’s Center of Excellence will be a state-of-the-art structure designed to serve today’s athletes with world-class facilities and strengthen the development of tomorrow’s Olympic skiers and snowboarders. Construction on the $22.5 million Center of Excellence will begin in the fall of 2007 and will be completed prior to the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. “This center has been a vision for over a decade and will have the best sport science and training facilities for our diverse athletic needs,” said USSA President and CEO Bill Marolt. “It also will provide educational opportunities that will benefit athletes in their specific sport and after their competitive careers end. “The Center represents our heart and soul,” added Marolt. “It is our commitment to the hundreds of young athletes striving for their Olympic dream and will bring together all of us, across all sports, as one great American ski and snowboard team. Furthermore, it will reignite the Olympic spirit from 2002 here in Utah.” The 85,000-square foot Center will be on a five-acre parcel leaving most of the land in its natural state as open space. It will blend the best of high-performance athletic facilities including a sport science lab, strength and cardio training areas, a gymnasium, ski and snowboard ramps, trampolines, a nutrition center and rehabilitation facilities. Plus, it will feature educational areas for athletes, coaches and clubs such as a computer lab, multimedia rooms for performance analysis and equipment workshops. And all of the educational resources will be shared with USSA’s 400 clubs around the country. “This is exactly what we need - it will be a huge asset for us,” said World Championships nordic combined silver medalist Bill Demong. Like many USSA athletes - Shannon Bahrke, Lindsey Kildow, Graham Watanabe, to name a few - Demong moved to Utah to work more closely with Team coaches, to utilize sport science and to take advantage of the 2002 Olympic legacy facilities. The Center will serve as a magnet for the ski and snowboard sports community in a variety of ways. It also will enhance the value for USSA stakeholders at every level – from the athletes, coaches and staff to clubs, volunteers, corporate partners, donors and other supporters. Funding for the Center of Excellence will be supported through the USSA’s Legacy Campaign endowment. The endowment, through the support of generous contributors, is already adding more than $1 million a year into athletic development. Beyond the Snow - Athlete Opportunities • 23 Athlete Education The USSA’s education program continues to grow. Twenty six current and former athletes are now attending Westminster College in Salt Lake City. Westminster provides tuition opportunities for national team athletes to utilize throughout the academic year as well as during the summer. Athletes are now able to attend full-time for up to two years after they have retired. Athletes who attend Westminster may work toward an undergraduate or graduate degree. Additional athletes took advantage of the USSA tuition reimbursement program. Through the generosity of Shelby Davis, Erik Borgen, Jim Swartz, and other benefactors, the USSA is able to provide financial assistance to athletes who are working toward a college degree at a variety of universities across the country, including Dartmouth College, the University of Denver, University of Utah, and the University of Colorado at Boulder. Over $90,000 of financial aid was distributed this year to help athletes earn a college degree. USSA also had seven athletes and staff members attend the Hoyt Dartmouth Language Program this past summer at Dartmouth College. Athlete Mentoring Twenty volunteers, predominantly USSA trustees, are making a difference in the lives of USSA athletes. Athletes were assigned to mentors this past summer. Mentors are helping athletes: explore career paths, define career goals, track job market trends, understand growth potentials within industries, and become familiar with regional information. The USSA would like to thank this year’s volunteers: Greg Boester, John Cumming, Andy Daly, Mark Dowley, Harry Frampton, Dennis Keller, Doug Mackenzie, Tom McGonagle, Bill Nutt, Dexter Paine, David Pottruck, Steven Read, Eric Resnick, Tiger Shaw, Bill Shiebler, Gordon Strachan, Steve Strandberg, Jim Swartz, Hank Tauber, and Jarett Wait. Dare to Dream Rookie Camp USSA held its first ever rookie camp this year, in Park City. Twenty-eight athletes representing every sport were introduced to the values, culture and structure of the USSA. Workshops were provided in community service, NCAA eligibility, money skills, the USOC career program, agent representation, USADA, sponsor support, image communications and educational opportunities.
