A Message from your President
To all Members and Supporters of the Philippine American Society of Greater Dayton
Over the years since 1972 when the organization was established, only a handful of Filipino
Physicians, Teachers, Engineers including Filipinos married to Americans decided to make these
group Phil-Am. By doing so, we were able to join the “ World A’ Fair and participated in the first
gathering of countries presenting their cultural displays, dances and serving authentic foods.
Yours truly was the first to represent the Philippines to the “World A’Fair Executive Body. From
that time on the Filipino and American community started to work hard and increased its
membership year after year. It was wonderful to watch the officers and members working together
in every activity that the club had to accomplish. We were all young families working together for
a common cause. We represented the Filipino and American families in the young gathering of
nations under one roof held yearly at the Dayton Convention Center. Immediately the Phil-Am
Society of Greater Dayton earned top distinction on stage, displays in the booth and cultural
costumes. We have continually maintained being on the top five in every category of competition
among the different countries year after year. The reason behind our success is the hard working
officers and support from membership including our friends who support us in every activity that
we did. Your generosity is something that makes the organization survive the challenges that the
organization faces every now and then. The officers that you elected every year are ordinary people
like you who donate their time and energy to run the organization. We are a generous people who
helps one another. We reward our deserving High School Graduates and College Students
scholarship every year. The officers and members do community services like serving the less
fortunate at the House of bread, distributing the canned goods that you donated to the food bank.
Last year we donated relief goods to Flood Victims in the Philippines, in Bulacan and in Cavite
respectively. This year, our hands are full because we have a lot of activities to accomplish and
again we will be expecting your full support. Our Theme this year is “Enrichment of the Filipino
and American Cultural Heritage”. We will be involving our youth in some capacity so that we
can start them to learn their cultural heritage. I also plan to start a Filipino Language School.
Some years back we instituted a Language School and it was very successful and it is time to do it
again. We will also include an adult group. I hope parents will take advantage of this opportunity.
As your President, I am appealing to everyone to encourage every Filipino-American family to
join the organization and help us make the society a more productive community. Let us instill our
cultural heritage to our children because only then can they begin to appreciate a meaningful life.
Let us start to produce our future leaders of our communities.
Maraming salamat po, Thank you. And Mabuhay
At your service

Enrichment of Filipino and American Heritage
(Mentoring Our Young to Be Future Leaders)
Congratulations to our new elected officers!
Romy Fernandez is not a stranger to us…his hard
work and dedication to our organization is
greatly appreciated.
Our motto this year: Give whatever you are
doing and whoever you are with the gift of your
attention. (By Jim Rohn)
We can shut people down by acting like we’re not
interested in their conversation. Let’s help “build
courage” and learn from each other.
Jim and I are looking forward to serving at the
World A’Fair again this year. We appreciate all
the comments and compliments about the food
we prepare. It’s joy to hear from people that
Filipino food “taste great!” 
Again, congratulations to our officers and we
wish you and the Phil-Am Society all the best!
Jim and Linda Revels
Steve Holder Marian Sayson President Vice President Public Relations Officer Treasurer Romy Fernandez is a long time member of the Philippine‐American Society of Greater Dayton. He was one of the organizers of the society. Back in the early 1970. There was a band of young Filipinos and Americans married to Filipinos joined together to put together a group to represent the Filipino‐
Americans living in the Greater Dayton Communities That was the birth of the Philippine‐
American Society. In 1973 Romy Fernandez was the first to represent the Phil‐Am to the Dayton International Festival. Romy retired from the Digitron Company as a Senior Engineer. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree and graduated from the Technical University of the Philippines in Manila. Romy is married to Nita Fernandez and have four boys and 8 grandchildren.
Steve has been a member of the Phil‐Am Society since 2003. He became involved when he approached Esther Mira at the A World A’Fair about having his daughter, Michelle, participate with what is now the Pamana Dance Group. He felt that it was necessary that Michelle experience the Filipino culture so she could truly appreciate her heritage. What better way was there to do that than for him to get involved with the organization? Steve was born in Dayton but raised in Green Bay, Wisconsin, HOME OF THE GREEN BAY PACKERS. Go Packers!! In 1991 Steve moved back to Dayton and worked at DELPHI in Kettering for 18 years. Steve graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a Bachelor’s degree. This will be his first year as an officer and vows to give his very best effort. The ever‐energetic Marian drives the officers to put forth that extra effort when performing their duties. When you assign her a task, you may consider it DONE! She brings an attitude of LET’S GET THIS DONE. Married to Armin Sayson, she learned (fast) the ins and outs of Phil‐Am activities. Having only three years experience as a member, she’s already served successfully as Recording Secretary and Public Relations Officer in a very short period of time. A Team Player like the rest of the officers, she’s fostered a harmonious work relationship between the executive officers. With her CAN DO and cooperative attitude, the Phil‐Am Society’s horizon this year shines bright. Look out because Marian will be in touch with everyone to seek their support. The efficiency of the Treasury Department of the Phil‐Am has energized the executive officers performance. Sally does her job in a well planned and organized manner. This is reflective of her educational background. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Statistics from the University of the Philippines and a MS in Management Science from the University of Dayton. She keeps our Treasury in order. Being our treasurer again is a positive attribute for a healthy financial state of the Phil‐Am Society. Sally is a team player and will go out of her way to do what is good for the organization. The executive committee is encourage to working with her in her second term of office. Her husband Danny and family has always supported her in all of her endeavors. Romy Fernandez Maritza Freshour Lilia Fernandez Leeing Haworth Recording Secretary Social Secretary Auditor Adventurism is an inherent attribute of Maritza. An Electrical Engineer by training, she got those sparkling energy in her tiny feet. She arrived in America in May 2001. She wandered through big cities like Chicago, Silt City, Rancho Cucamonga, and Daly City, meeting relatives and friends before accepting her first job with the Powernet Electric Co in Hayward, California. Later moved to Ohio and married Steve Freshour. She is bessed with six children: Andy, Adam, Kent, Xara, Daryl, and Joshua. She graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering from St. Peter’s College in Iligan City, Philippines. She earned a Pharmacy Technician Registry (CPhT) and is studying Nursing at Sinclair Community College. Talk about asserts of the Phil‐Am Lilia is a good example of it. Don’t look upon the book cover because she’ll surprise you. She is a veteran of the organization. Been there, done that! She joined the Phil‐Am in 1984 served under three Presidents. Graduated from the Philippine Law School with a Degree in Banking and Finance. Her training is an asset to the Phil‐Am as well as the Premier Health Services where she currently works. Her duties with the Phil‐Am is a point of contact between the Phil‐Am and its membership. She is well organized in her duties and her relationship with the community. Married to Gil Fernandez and blessed with a son Ryan. Her husband have been supportive to her and to the Phil‐Am Society. Sally Juan Leeing is another asset to the Phil‐
Am. A hard working and dedicated person, someone who will give a boost to the organization. Working at night and duties at home is not a deterrent to her duties to the Phil‐
Am Society. Leeing is blessed with a son, Shawn and daughter Bridgette. At times she is busy with her grandchildren the jewels of her life. Leeing have already shown signs of dedication to her duties and as a team component of the executive staff. She works at the Hospice of Dayton. Leeing grew up in Olongapo City in the Philippines. Her daughter Bridgette had been designated as the leader of the Youth Group. By involving Bridgette with the youth group is an asset to the Phil‐Am Society’s future leaders. Dr. Vilma Helms, PhD Historian Dr. Helms is not a green horn to the Phil‐Am Society. She held the Presidential office of the Phil‐Am Society in four different terms. She is also the Executive Director of the FALOD organization. She was appointed by the 2011 President to take over the duties of a Historian. As past President of the society, Vilma is the ultimate go to person when it comes to social functions. She is the most outgoing person the Phil‐Am Society has ever had. Being a teacher by profession, she is the best instrument to instill the Phil‐
Am Heritage to the Society. She will be a great help when we launch our Language School in the near future. Vilma is married to Wendell Helms and is blessed with four children, Mary, John, Wendy and Rex. May God Bless the Philippine‐American Society of Greater Dayton for caring to make a difference in the lives of others Armin and Marian Sayson and the Sayson and Garcia Boys: Steve, Mico, Chris, Mike, Julian, and Joshua The Philippine‐American Society of Greater Dayton salutes the Sons and Daughters and Members serving in the United States of America’s Armed Forces, here and around the globe. Love, Wealth and Success
A Filipina (woman) came out of her house and saw three old men with long white beards
sitting under her mango tree. She did not recognize them. She said, “I do not know you,
but you must be hungry. Please come in and have something to eat.”
“Is your asawa (husband) home?” they asked. “No”, she said. “He is planting palay (rice)
in the rice paddy fields.”
“Then we cannot come in”, they replied.
In the evening when her husband came home, she told him what had happened. “Mahal
(love), go tell them I am home and invite them in,” he said.
The woman went out and invited the men in. “We do not go into a house together,” they
replied. “Why is that?” she wanted to know. One of the old men explained: “His name is
Wealth,” he said pointing to one of his friends, and said pointing to another one, “He is
Success, and I am Love.” Then he added, “Now go in and talk over with your husband
which one of us you want in your home.”
The woman went in and told her husband what was said. Her husband was thrilled. “How
wonderful!” he said. “Since that is the case, let us invite Wealth. Let him come and fill
our home with wealth!”
His wife disagreed. “Husband, why don’t we invite Success?” His tatay (father) was
listening from the other corner of the house. He jumped in with his own suggestion:
“Lalake (son) would it not be wise to invite Love? Our home will then be filled with
love!”
“Let us obey my father’s advice,” said the husband to his wife. “Go out and invite Love
to be our guest.”
The woman went out and asked the three old men, “Which one of you is Love? Please
come in and be our guest.” Love got up and started walking toward the house. The other
two also got up and followed him.
Surprised, the woman asked Wealth and Success: “I only invited Love, why are you
coming in?” The old men replied together: “If you had invited Wealth or Success, the
other two of us would’ve stayed out, but since you invited Love, wherever He goes, we
go with him. Wherever there is Love, there is also Wealth and Success!”
