PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE,
A
September 2012
s we approach the Jewish year
of 5773, we can think about the
current state of our community.
The title of a famous song “Times they
are a changing” comes to mind. We
all remember a time, in the not too
distant past, when we were blessed
with the help of many members. Let
us hope that our community can learn
to pull together in order to shine once
again. Let us hope that more
members will find the energy and the
motivation to join the few dedicated
individuals who are currently forming
the
pillars
that
support
our
Synagogue.
Nancy’s
article
to
Shalom
magazine is a complement to this
report and can be found on page 5.
We had the pleasure, this
summer, to see many Jewish visitors
come and join us in Shul for Shabbat.
Among others, David Spevakow, the
president of the Kelowna Jewish
community spent Shabbat with us. A
regular pilot with WestJet, let us hope
that we will see a few more times
when his schedule brings him here.
A few Israelis, residents of
Moncton have become regular to the
Friday or Saturday morning services.
That is great! Without them we would
not have enough people to conduct
full service. Toda raba David, Yoav,
Lior, Uri, Morris, Eugene, Igor and
Yuri and a special thank you to Lior
and Morris who have been preparing
the leining a number of times this
summer.
Three very happy events took
place in the synagogue this year:
•
the briss-milah of Benjamin Isaac
Makarov on January 31, 2012,
the naming of Isabella Hannah
(Bella Chana) Makarov on March
10, 2012, (both children were born
on January 24),
•
the Bar Mitvah of Pinny
(Pinchas) Yagod on November 26,
2011, parashat Toledot.
All these events were followed
by beautiful kiddushes and dinners
(for the Bar-Mitzvah).
Other Naches to report:
• a grand daughter to Ann and
Harry Gorber, Livia, daughter of
Lorne and Venessa,
• a grand daughter to Francis
Weil, Ella, daughter of Sarah-Nadine
and Laurent,
• a big Naches is coming in late
October.
Get
ready,
Joshua
Makarov will become bar-mitzvah, it
will be the occasion for the whole
community to get together. Please
find in page 5 of this bulletin, your
personnal invitation to the Simcha.
Mazal tov to the Gorber, to the
Weil and to the Makarov families!
•
Two new Israeli families, with a
total of five children, are supposed
to come sometime next year. We
are looking forward to meet them.
Mazal tov also to Amos
Gorber, the oldest member of our
community.
Rabbi and Rebbetzin Yagod,
on a part time basis, are bringing our
community
much
enthusiasm,
spirituality and passion for Life and
Judaism.
Several
of
our
youngest
members had a great time while
learning about Judaism at Tiferes
Israel Day Camp in June. The camp
was led by Huvie Yagod with the
help of her sister Channie. It
provided a fun filled Jewish
atmosphere for children ages 4
to 13.
Both the Rabbi and the
Rebbetzin are eager to hear from
you, and to work with you in
order to revitalize Jewish life in
the area. They also look forward
to helping anyone interested in
discovering greater comfort and
joy with their own Judaism.
Please do not hesitate to contact
them, either in person, by phone
or e-mail
Parents who have kids not
registered in Cheder classes are
encouraged
to
speak
to
Rebbetzin Yagod.
The
loss
of
valuable
members is hard on a small
community. Every one is so
important and when souls move
on, the community as a whole
feels the loss. Joseph Naylor z”l
will be dearly missed! On behalf
of our community, I offer Jane
and her family sincere and
heartfelt condolence.
As we approach Rosh
Hashanah, I would like to
mention some of this past year’s
memorable events, such as the
BBQ and building of the Sukkah,
the Simchat Torah deli-splurge,
the Hanukkah dinner, the Purim
traditional feast, the special
Kiddushes and the annual
summer
BBQ
at
Betty
Druckman’s. I hope to see you all
at services for the High Holidays,
as well as the building of the
Sukkah, Sunday September 23,
the Sunday before Yom-Kippur.
Jewish life in Atlantic
Canada
has
changed.
A
generation or two ago, our
provinces were blessed with 10
Tishri 5773

vibrant Shuls that all had rabbis and
regular services
There is a need now to pull
together.
We have many challenges now.
Getting enough people for the
services… finding enough funds to
meet our expenses… The board is
appealing to all our members to make
an effort and be generous. We have
not increased dues, but our revenues
are decreasing as is our membership.
We need additional funds besides
dues. We are setting up a Synagogue
Fund and Myer Rabin, our V.-P. can
help you if you want to make a
donation that will decrease your
income taxes payements.
Our deficit is becoming larger
every year and we have to realize that
the time will soon come where it is
going to become too much a burden.
As said before, last week, the
president of the Kelowna (B.C.)
community was in Shul. He gave me
some ideas on how to raise funds,
see, for example, http://ojcc.ca/golftournament.php
I hope that we will find enough
volunteers and you will be inspired to
lend a helping hand for these special
programs. I do hope that the positive
forces in our community will prevail.
However, I do realise how hard it is to
motivate the membership. No-one
answered my plea for help in writing
this bulletin. I will soon cease to be
president and write the bulletin. Let us
hope that someone will take over. You
can be a part of our community’s
solutions. Do not underestimate the
value of any amount of time and/or
financial support that you can offer,
and please strive to do so in the spirit
of Love and Joy.
Baruch Hashem. May you and all
your relations be blessed with peace
of mind, good health, joy and
happiness. Shana Tova.

From The Desk of The Rabbi
Dear Friends
“Jewish Monctonian and Proud of it !”
Face it, we Canadians are more famous for a sense
of humility than pride, Maritimers, even more so. So
pride does not come easily and most prefer it that way.
Yet we learn in the Jewish commentaries that a very
small dose of pride is not a form of arrogance and is to
be encouraged.
That small dose of pride is good when it results in
greater communal energy, in greater effort expended to
achieve a difficult goal. When it comes to sports it
becomes obvious how essential both individual and
communal pride support the system and its
accomplishments. You can be sure that there would be
no Wayne Gretzky or Maurice “Rocket” Richard without
that fierce pride in the sport and the team.
Our community is a lovely and wonderful community
with a brighter future than the average small Jewish
community and a enjoys a very strong likelihood of
taking its place among the leading Canadian Jewish
communities of the next decade. A small dose of
communal pride is to be welcomed and will help provide
the substantial energy needed to enable our communal
dreams. Yes, this pride -is kosher!
My friends, it is hard to believe that this month marks
3 years since Frimet, the kids and I came to join this
wonderful shul and community. Much has happened and much more to be done but let us allow ourselves to
briefly reflect on what is positive and good and what has
transpired and developed in the past 3 years.
First and foremost, there is a strong sense of
communal SHALOM, peace. Without peace nothing can
endure, for nothing can be built on quicksand...Let us
never take peace for granted again, a good foundation is
so obviously important and yet proves so elusive to a
great many long-standing kehillot and shuls !
Many children are starting to come to the shul -for
services, lessons, events or just some Jewish
socialization. New families and some young dynamic
individuals have already moved here or are in the
process of doing so. We have had a wonderful summer
camp -3 summers now-with excellent reviews from the
kids and the parents and as well we have had several
Shabbatonim that bring in Jews from the region to our
area. During the school year an increasing number
of weeks feature larger crowds and numerous kids on
the bimah, boding well for future growth. Pride in what
IS good is most important for our success so that
instead of looking at the negatives such as the ‘slow
weeks’, we stay upbeat until indeed every week is a
‘good week’. Make no mistake, this will take time but in
this season of “Teshuva”, returning home we can return
life to our shul if we our patient with ourselves.
On another note, the local kashruth work has
increased greatly, which provides a crucial support
Tiferes Israel, Tishri 5773
enabling us to establish our long-term presence in
town. Going forward I’d like to ask everyone to help our
shul stay viable and to join us at various events. I hope
to make the Maritime Shabbatonim a regular event to
bring Jews together right here in Moncton. Our late Joe
Naylor taught me something from his personal
experience: How one far-reaching can be the impact of
just one Shabbaton !
Finally, I’d like to Thank our wise President: Francis
Weil and the entire dedicated team that governs the
shul including the entire Board of Directors, Ivan
Cohen, our Gabbai, Betty Rubin, president of
Sisterhood and the entire Sisterhood, Tut Gorber, head
of Chevra Kadisha and his entire team and each and
everyone who helps the shul!
Have a Sweet Year
~Your Rabbi,
Y. I. M. Yagod, B.Sc.

Cheder Corner
Tiferes Israel Cheder is gearing up for a new,
exciting year. We are looking forward to a Bar Mitzvah
IY”H of one of our students and new programs for the
students. We would also like to thank Heather Evans
of PEI for donating the Tal Am Hebrew Reading and
Language program to the Cheder.
The students and staff of Cheder Tiferes Israel
wish the community a Shana Tova.
Rebbetzin’s Corner
Over the three years of being in Moncton,
there are recurring themes that people have expressed
that they would like information on. These topics
include Davening (Prayer), lessons on the weekly
Parsha (Torah Portion), Kosher, Shabbat, Mikvah and
contemporary issues. To address this need, it was felt
that a new column in the Bulletin should be started. As
well, new classes will IY”H be started for the adults
after the Holidays for anyone interested in pursuing a
deeper, richer Jewish Education.
Our first topic will be Davening/Prayer. Let us
explore some of the Prayers that Jews, the world over,
pray. The first one that everyone agrees on is Shema.
The source of this Prayer is in Devarim/Deutoronmy
6:4. Surprisingly, the first verse was actually said by
the children of Jacob when he was instructing them on
their spiritual mission prior to his passing. Jacob
wanted to reveal to them when Moshiach/Messiah
would come and how to prepare spiritually for it. At
that moment, Hashem removed Jacob’s ability to give
prophesy in order to prevent him from revealing this
information. As Jacob experienced this, he thought that
maybe one of his children had either sinned or was not
on the spiritual level to even explore this topic. Jacob’s
children answer ”Hear Israel (Jacob’s second name)
Hashem is our G-d, Hashem is one.”
Moses repeats this verse in his time of
page - 3 -
Tishri 5773
4
instructing the Israelites prior to his passing. Moshe
further instructs them: “And you shall love your G-d with
all your heart, all your soul and all your resources.”
Rambam/Maimonides in his treatise entitled “The Eight
Chapters”, poses the following question: how can we
love Hashem since we cannot see Hashem with our own
eyes? Maimonides answers that we investigate, learn
and absorb that which Hashem created i.e. we study the
world Hashem created to understand and appreciate
Hashem. As such, we are obligate to study the various
sciences, maths etc. to accomplish the Mitzvah of loving
Hashem.
We are entreated by the Torah to employ 3
varying tools to reach this goal. We must use our hearts
which includes both the good and evil inclinations, our
souls i.e. regardless of how difficult it is to accomplish
this Mitzvah (which includes all the other Mitzvot), we
must still persevere. The person who says“ I will only do
that which is convenient for me” has missed the point of
this Mitzvah. The third tool is all our resources. There
are many ways to accomplish a Mitzvah. For example,
we use our money to pay for our expenses of Shabbat,
the Holidays and Jewish Education. Even if the tuition
fees are a little steep, we still persevere to make sure
our children have an excellent Jewish Education.
In the next article, we will continue exploring the
Shema and its ramifications on Jewish History and
contemporary Jewish life.
Hannah Davidson! “VERY WELL DONE”, her team got
fabulous goodies to auction. I know Hannah, Simone,
Nicole and Jennifer with advice from Ruth and Joan,
spent time at meetings and co-ordinating this project. It
certainly highlighted the afternoon as well as it was a
fun financial success.
I would also like to thank our president, Francis
Weil, whose direction, availability and leadership is
very much appreciated.
To everyody who came to the BAR-B-Q, thank
you. To those who were not able to, we look forward to
seeing you next August.
HAVE A HAPPY HEALTHY NEW YEAR.

NOTES FROM SISTERHOOD
Our 4th annual BAR-B-Q took place Sunday
August 19th.
I am still beaming with the delightful success.
The combination of a growing Jewish
enthusiastic community enjoying each other, stories of
the past, it was evident the future of our Jewish
community looked bright, gaining momentum of strength
to project a future that will create Moncton as one of the
leading Jewish communities in the Maritimes.
The youth of our community were approximately
eighteen, ages six months to fifteen, the youngest and
newest members (the Makarov twins) enjoyed their first
Jewish function.
Team work for the BAR-B-Q was superb. David
Rinzler and Jordan Davidson controlled BAR- B-QUING.
The hot dogs and hamburgers, brought from the US via
Rabbi and Rebbetzin Yagod, were delicious.
John FLANAGAN, always available, brought the
BAR-B-Q and table to my house. Joan Mayer, Ruth
Fuller, always enthusiastic, added great finishing
touches to the lunch, coleslaw, potato salad and
vegetable salad.
The highlight of the party was the “SILENT
AUCTION”. Hannah Davidson chaired this event. This
project was very successful. CONGRATULATIONS to

Report from Moncton to Shalom magazine
In May, Tiferes Israel hosted a delightful evening of
storytelling by Jewish storyteller Aubrey Davis. Mr. Davis
was touring New Brunswick as part of the TD Canadian
Children’s Book Week author tour. He is the author of
several books for children including Bagels for Benny,
Kishka for Koppel and A Hen for Izzy Pippik, as well as a
fabulous storyteller, and many of the stories he tells
have their roots in the Talmud. About 50 people of all
ages attended and everyone was mesmerized by his
stories. Many thanks to the AJC for helping to sponsor
Aubrey’s visit to the shul.
Tiferes Israel Day Camp took place for 2 weeks in late
June and early July and was once again a great
success. Ahuva Yagod, the camp director created a
great program that taught the kids about the 7 days of
creation in a very hands-on way with crafts, baking,
games and other activities. All the children who attended
had a wonderful time. We appreciate the AJC’s help in
funding the camp this summer.
Mazel tov to:
th
-Amos Gorber, for reaching, in July, his 99 birthday.
-Audrey Lampert, on being named to the Order of New

Condolences to Marilyn Boghen and family on the loss
of Marilyn’s mother.
The synagogue is quite active. Extensive work has been
done over the past two years on the Mikvah to bring it to
religious standards, thanks to the efforts of Rabbi and
Rebbetzin Yagod who have found exterior funding for
the repairs. The Mikvah is now fully operational. Jews
who want to use it should contact Rabbi or Rebbetzin
Yagod (tiferesisrael.com).
Services are held regularly four times a week. A new
group of Israelis are helping to complete the minyanim.
We want to thank Joseph Kohn who has been reading
the Torah for many years. Ivan Cohen, Morris Samuel
and, lately, Lior Boxer have also prepared the leining.
David Bendavid, Theodore Lewis and Francis Weil are
Tiferes Israel, Tishri 5773
contributing to the davening. Joan Mayer, Goldie
Johnson, Ruth Fuller and Carole Savage have been
spending a lot of time preparing the Kiddushes.
The community had its annual BarBQ on Sunday
August 19. It was held, as usual, at Betty Druckman
house in Shediac Bridge. In addition to kosher hot
dogs and hamburgers, we had a musician and a silent
auction “bring and buy”. Everyone had fun.
New immigrants are soon going to join the community.
We are expecting two families with five children shortly
and might, later, receive another three families.
Best wishes to all for a happy, healthy and sweet New
Year.
Shana tova.

Card of Thanks
The family of Joe Naylor z”l, who passed away Oct. 29, 2011, would like to thank all those
who have honoured Joe’s life and memory in so many ways: Rabbi Ellis and Rabbi Yagod for
conducting the Funeral and the Unveiling respectively and for speaking so eloquently about Joe;
Rebbetzin Yagod for help with the Hebrew wording on the monument and plaque, and for personal
advice; Harry Gorber and the Chevra Kadisha, especially Harry’s kind sensitivity; the Pall bearers;
Sisterhood for the Breakfast following the Funeral and the beautiful meal following the Unveiling
(especially Joan, Linda, Ruth and Theodore); Francis Weil and Carole Savage for helping with coordination and communication; all of you who came to the Funeral and the Unveiling, who gave
donations, sent cards, emails, or spoke by telephone. Thanks too to Heather Evans, Leslee Sack,
Leo Mednick and others of PEI who were so supportive at the QEH hospital; to Leslee who
arranged a gathering in PEI the week following Joe’s passing and to the many who came to that
and brought kosher food; and to those who visited personally. Your condolences and memories of
Joe meant a lot to us.
Your respect for Joe and your support has helped and is still helping us get through this
emotionally difficult first year.
Our sincere thanks to all of you,
Jane Naylor and immediate Family (Shawn Naylor, Miriam and Grahame Rhodes)

Social Development Minister Sue Stultz presented Diamond Jubilee medals to Larry Nelson and Reuben Cohen,
both of Moncton, on June 19. The medal honours the significant contributions and achievements of Canadians. It
was created to mark the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign as Queen of Canada. From left: Nelson;
Stultz; Cohen; and Moncton Mayor George LeBlanc.
From Michael Ruben
WHEN THE HOLY TEMPLE was destroyed the stones were scattered all over the world.
Wherever a stone fell a house of worship was eventually constructed, and that special stone was used
as part of the foundation as a constant reminder of the Holy Temple.
A Chasidic rabbi said that our holy melodies originated from the music of the Temples. These melodies,
like the Jewish people and the Temple stones, were dispersed among the nations of the world.
AT THE WALL, around 3 a.m., we heard a man chanting Tehilim. We listened and watched him for
awhile. When he finished we approached him and asked where he was from. He said, "Well, I'm from
Russia. Do you know how much I paid to get here? Ten years in Siberia."
We asked how he managed to spend ten years in Siberia.
"You'd never guess," he said. "It was because I couldn't stop singing. I remember when I was a little
boy I asked my father where the songs are of the Beit Hamikdosh. It can't be that we forgot all the
melodies. My father could only hold back his tears. Don't you remember even one note father?" I
asked him.
Tears appeared as he spoke, "My zeide told me that the Nusach of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur
were the holiest of the holies, so that's what I sing. What a privilege, what an honor."
The beautiful thing about chants
is that, with the right combination of notes,
they open themselves to endless harmonies.
Your voice, someone else's voice, everyone's voice;
as each person adds their own harmony,
they create their own chant
from which others can harmonize.
It is magical.
It is the secret of their impact.
See you in shul,
