Well it’s nice to be finished with the holidays and time to get back on the water and do some sailing! If you did not make the February General Membership Meeting at Pontchartrain Yacht Club you missed a very good presentation by Dave Bolyard of Westwind Sails in Mandeville on starting tactics. It was a great way to get the sailing juices going for the new year, and I do believe everyone present got something out of it – including myself! At the General Membership Meeting, we had presentations by Treasurer Gerald Keuhler stating we had $12,446 in the bank account and 74 paid up members – if you have not paid your dues please get them into the PO Box as soon as you can. They are delinquent after March. Gerald also advised on the North Shore that the Winter series had bad weather, and the last race of the series was scheduled for February 27 – stay tuned for the results. On the South Shore, as of this writing, the SS Winter Series was completed on March 8 with winds up to 8 knots and a total of 18 boats, both Spinnaker and Non-Spinnaker, participating. It was a beautiful day on the race course – great race run by Don Levy- Thanks Don! On the south shore, the CSA-SYC Spring Starlight Series is coming up; and, if you have never tried racing, this is a good way to “get your feet” wet, as it will be entirely Non-Spinnaker. We look forward to getting out on the race course as the sunsets are always nice. The sign up should be coming out soon – keep an eye out on the website and your email, as Don will be sending out notices soon. The Birthday Party was a great success, with 99 people attending. As usual, Chef Katherine and the Shriners’ Band did an outstanding job! Looking forward to next year already! It was also mentioned at the meeting that in February, former Commodore Bill Fields and new member Leigh Bock were able to remove the old Delta Mark on the SS, and now only a floating Delta Mark is on station. Many thanks to Bill and Leigh!!! The next General Membership Meeting is going to be held on May 19th at NOYC, starting at 7PM. We will have Michael Liebaret (who spoke last year) make a presentation on how to best tie your boat up for a storm surge. 3 Corinthian Sailing Association JibSheet March 2015 Page 3 We are trying to get the date for Summer Party – it should be either the 18th or 25th of July. There will be a notice on the website, and it will once again be at the Pontchartrain Yacht Club with a his and hers Hawaiian Shirt Contest for bottles of rum. I can tell you that the burgers are great at PYC! There will be no charge, so please put this on your calendar. I would like to finish by saying if you have any suggestions or comments please share them with me or members of the board . This is your club and only together can we make it better! Hope to see you on the water soon! 4 Page 4 Corinthian Sailing Association JibSheet March 2015 CORINTHIAN SAILING ASSOCIATION February 24, 2015 General Membership Meeting Held: February 24, 2015 at Pontchartrain Yacht Club Present: Quorum Present 1. Call to Order: Meeting called to order at 7:12 p.m. at PYC. 2. Previous Minutes: Reading dispensed and minutes accepted unanimously. 3. Treasurer’s Report: Gerald Kuehler reported that last year we had 83 members. This year we have approximately 80 with several more current possibilities. We have a balance of $12,500.00 in our bank account which is about the same as last year. 4. Race Committee Report: A. North Shore: Gerald reported bad weather has hampered the Winter Series. The 3rd race is set for Saturday, February 28th. B. Dieter speaking for Don Levy reported the 3rd race of the Winter Series will be Sunday, March 8th. 5. Membership: Dieter reported two new North Shore members and two new South Shore members. They are Leigh Bock, Louis Schneider, Ryan Schoolmeyer (Time Out) and David Barr (Good Stuff). 6. Social Committee: Dieter reported that the club is trying to have the Summer Party at PYC either the 18th or 25th of July. 7. Old Business: A. Dieter thanked Bill Fields and new member Leigh Bock for getting the old delta mark raised and cut off. B. CSA is trying to put together a joint challenge cup effort with South Shore Yacht Club. An “A” boat rating 72 or less is needed. It would be a 3 day race format falling in June be tween the Race to the Coast and the Pensacola Race. Please speak to Dieter or Louise Bienvenu if you have an interest in participating. C. The Mardi Gras Regatta PHRF class will be February 28th and March 1st. They will attempt 3 races and possibly 4. 8. Ronnie Salenger suggested that a sailing rendezvous be planned at the Bay St. Louis Yacht Club. Bay St. Louis has a very nice facility and would give some of our members a taste for sailing on “the outside.” 9. A kickoff party for the “Saw Grass Series” will be held at SYC, Saturday, March 8th. Every one is invited. 10. The GORC is April 9, 10 and 11th. 11. Next General Membership Meeting: Will be Tuesday, May 19th at NOYC at 7:00 p.m. 12. Adjournment: 7:25 p.m. David Bolyard gave an excellent seminar on race procedures and tactics after the meeting. By: Ralph W. Junius, Jr., Secretary 5 Corinthian Sailing Association JibSheet March 2015 Page 5 2015 South Shore Racing As prescribed in the CSA Sailing Instructions, the class break for the Spinnaker Fleet is published following the Winter Series. The break for 2015 will be the same as 2014: PHRF 139 and less: Spinnaker A, PHRF >139: Spinnaker B. There are scheduled 13 BOTY races this year: 3 CSA Winter Series, 8 Classic Class Series, CSA Night Triangle and CSA Double-Handed. The the best 9 of 13 starts will be scored. As previously announced, the CSA will be participating in the 2015 Classic Class Spring/Fall Series. The race schedule for this Series is posted on the CSA website, South Shore Calendar. There will be three fleets: Classic and Performance Spinnaker and Non-Spinnaker. The Performance Spinnaker Fleet will be split into two bands if 10 or more boats are registered. The eight buoy races in the two series will count toward the CSA BOTY competition. All CSA members are encouraged to participate in these races as they serve not only as BOTY races but also as our Spring and Fall Series. All CSA members registering should submit $25 with their registration form. An additional $25 per boat will be provided by CSA after the numbers are tallied. 6 Corinthian Sailing Association Page 6 JibSheet March 2015 2015 South Shore Race Results 2015 CSA Winter Series Place Boat Skipper Race #1 Race #2 Race #3 Total Spinnaker A 1 2 3 Tigi Too Fresh Pineapple Defiance Hugel Williams Bancroft DNC 12* 2 DNC11* 1 DNC12* 3 1 3 4 2 5 7 4 5 6 7 Madam Hot Chocolate Footloose Too Bad Alice Junius Grimm Robson Molony 6 7 5 1 DNC12* 2 4 DNC12* 2 DNC12* 6* DNC12 8 9 9 13 8 9 10 Big J KITC Catty Two Berry Rogers Murray 9 3 4 DNC12* DNC12* DNC12* 5 DNC12 DNC12 14 15 16 11 Rambunctious Berry 8 DNC12* DNC12 20 Lola Witch Doctor Trout Siren Blitz Good Intentions déjà vu Girl Bliss Bienvenu Hadju Levy McCaffrey Grisoli McLachlan Connolly Whited Huntsman 2* 5* 4 DNC10* 6* 1 8* 3 7* 2 1 3 5 4 DNC10* 6 DNC10* 7 1 2 5* 3 4 DNC10 6 DNC10 7 3 3 7 8 8 11 12 13 14 Spinnaker B 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Non-Spinnaker 1 2 3 Koala Paloma Muse Lambou Bryce McCulloh 1* 2* 3 1 2 4* 1 2 4 2 4 7 4 Bouree Arnold 5 5 3 8 5 6 Malibu Y Knot Breaux Wise 4 6 6* DNC7* 5 7 9 13 * Throwout Race 7 Corinthian Sailing Association JibSheet March 2015 2015 North Shore Race Results 2015 CSA Winter Series Overall Results Finish Boat Skipper Spinnaker Class 1 The Bear Choate 2 Whiskers Kuehler Non-Spinnaker "A" Class 1 Voodoo Child Quinlan 2 Risky Business Bacque 3 Easy Street Dixon Non-Spinnaker "B" Class 1 Summer Wind Barousse 2 Tata Duende Keating 3 Reivers Swinney Beating to Windward: Method of flogging crew to increase upwind performance when racing. One thing Tom & I learned from Dave Bolyard: The leeward boat cannot force the windward boat to miss the finish line buoy if the windward boat obtains an overlap at three boat lengths from the finish line. Awards for first thru third in the non-spin class were presented at the PYC bar after the race and Dave Bolyard gave some “sailing critiques” to several of the boats. Congratulations to all for a race well sailed! 9 Corinthian Sailing Association JibSheet March 2015 Page 9 Wild Blue Yonder waits for a breeze Zephyr: Warm, pleasant breeze.
