July 2011 - Southshore Falls | By Del Webb
Wayne, Barbara Rabineau bring Musical Greatness to Southshore Falls, Apollo Beach as DJ’s, Party Planners Wayne and Barbara Rabineau know good music. A professional musician, Wayne Rabineau played with Mitch Ryder, Bob Seger, Tommy James and many other stars during his long career. He still plays in a band in Michigan during the summer with his friends Frank Cusmano, Tom and Debbie Reno, but this year they won’t make the trip--Barbara has a job in Tampa. But that’s okay, because the Rabineau’s enjoy their lifestyle at Del Webb Southshore Falls so much. Wayne and Barbara, owners of Elite Entertainment, serve as Southshore Falls’ resident DJ and Party Planners. They specialize in 50’s and 60’s music, and they have organized more than 10 events so far at Del Webb Southshore Falls this year, including a dinner dance for the Women's Club. July 2011 Welcome New Residents Perelli Household Bell Household Vollmer Household Elder Household Davis Household Brokaw Household Mussoline Household Bean Household “We do all kinds of parties, from banquets, karaoke, and pool parties to weddings,” Wayne said. In October, the Rabineau’s will perform at the wedding of Dominique Cotrone, Southshore Falls’ Lifestyle Director. “We plan to expand our services to Del Webb communities in Orlando and Pulte Group communities in Sarasota,” Rabineau explained. Wayne and Barbara purchased their home in Del Webb Southshore Falls three years ago. When they honeymooned in Key West, they both decided they wanted to live in Florida. A brother-in-law with ties to Pulte Homes and Centex Homes told them about Pulte's building practices and so the Rabineau’s decided to learn more about Del Webb communities. One visit to Southshore Falls was all it took. “The staff and people we work with here are amazing,” Rabineau said. “The people living in Southshore Falls really love our music---they are our generation,” he said. Elite Entertainment has been in business since 1990 in Michigan and Florida. “We strive for excellence at every event, providing quality entertainment for you and your guests,” Rabineau said. “Elite Entertainment listens to you, making your vision become reality.” In this Issue: New Homeowners July Events Calendars Group Updates Del Webb’s Cooks for the Cure Christmas in July Event Sounds of the Silver Screen Event Fathers Day Party Exclusive Important Contact Information General Information Hurricane Preparedness Note from Dominique Kims Korner Sounds of the Silver Screen– Screen– July 2nd Welcome Gayle Cohen and Robert Cohen, the Time Squared Duo, to Southshore Falls on July 2nd. Thank you for a great Father’s Day The Father’s Day pool party hosted by Del Webb was a great success! Many people gathered around the pool and enjoyed the chicken skewers and ribs outside the Wellspring Clubhouse. Quite a few residents learned a new dance with the staff, boogied the day away, and ended up with a new skill and a nice tan line! Sales and Vacation Getaway guests enjoyed meeting the residents and shared a great time together. Thank you to all the staff and volunteers who helped out with the day, cooked the food, served the food, and helped set up and break down. We can’t do it without the residents! The Lea’s Trip to China In May, we scratched off one of many trips from our “Travel bucket list”. On this fantastic journey we traveled to the Far East spending 17 days in China and Hong Kong. Our trip was planned and escorted by a superb travel company, Viking River Cruises, which enabled us to see and feel a culture which previously we had only read or heard about. We traveled by plane, bus, and riverboat seeing the ancient, the modern, the poor, the everyday, and the well-to-do in one of the world’s largest countries. It is a trip that we cannot keep from talking about, both with each other and our friends. Del Webb’s 1000 Cooks for the Cure A chance to do good while having a good time. On Saturday, July 16th from 6-8 PM you’re invited to the Cook for the Cure party! This is a potluck & BYOB Dinner Event where residents will sign up to bring one of the following dishes: appetizer, salad, main course, or dessert. Only rule would be that all dishes must incorporate the color PINK somehow (dish they serve on or in the food). We will be accepting donations at the door in sponsorship with Susan G. Komen foundation and Kitchenaid. All donations are greatly appreciated and go straight to the Susan G. Komen foundation. A donation form is a must for any monetary donation. The donation will have our community ID# and will allocate the funds to Southshore Falls. In support of this great cause, I would like to invite any women in the community who have dealt with or are battling breast cancer to sign up to be part of the Resident Honorary Board, which will be displayed at the party! Please email the Lifestyle Director if you would like to be part of this honorary board. Southshore Falls will be competing against other Del Webb’s in the state of Florida to see which community collects the most donations. The community that collects the most donations will receive an amenity “Kitchen Upgrade” by Kitchenaid. According to breastcancer.org • About 1 in 8 women in the United States (12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. • For women in the U.S., breast cancer death rates are higher than those for any other cancer, besides lung cancer. • Besides skin cancer, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among U.S. women. Marshall, Jack Glugman, Jack Warden, Ed Begley; directed by Sidney Lumet 2. The Verdict (1982) – Paul Newman, Jack Warden, James Mason; directed by Sidney Lumet Taste Testers Report If any of you have been fortunate enough to travel abroad, and to Italy specifically, you probably came back with the attitude that we just can’t get authentic Italian food in this country. Well, you may or may not be right, but one thing is sure: we certainly have some great restaurants in the Tampa Bay area. Several of our dinner groups, now known as the Taste Testers, have visited a few of our local Italian restaurants. Here are a few reviews from our dining enthusiasts: Joia, Gibsonton Road, Gibsonton: Good Italian food, incredibly strong drinks (2-for-1 pricing), private area for groups at one long table. Bernini’s, Ybor City, Tampa: Elegant but noisy Italian restaurant with excellent food. We were seated along the front, next to the entrance, so we didn’t get much opportunity to enjoy the ambiance or music; a better option would be upstairs at the back, if the entire party can handle the long staircase. If you are interested in joining one of our many Taste Testers groups, please sign up in the book in the clubhouse or call Peggy Retsch at 645-9309. Fantasy Football 2011— 2011—The Southshore Falls 8Balls Fantasy Football 2011 is almost here. This year we would like to expand the league from eight teams to twelve. Currently we have nine team owners and are looking for three more. The live online draft is scheduled for August 31st at 7:30 p.m. Entry fee is $50 per team. Last year's winner, Bob Doyon (Tiger Cubs), is eager to repeat as champion. The league is run on the computer at Yahoosports.com. All owners have to do is set their lineups for each week. The computer takes care of scoring each team's points for the week. For more information, call Don Whiteman at (941) 730-2533, e-mail him at [email protected], or contact any team owner (Bob Doyon, Steve Gelber, Tom Hines, Frank Beckous, Bob Waite, Wayne Jensen, or Bill Hensor). During the season, we meet in the Internet Café every Wednesday morning at 11:00 a.m. for banter, shooting the breeze, and weekly results from the “football experts” of Southshore Falls. New Neighborhood Wine Group NEW GROUP FORMING I am searching for Southshore Falls residents who would like to be part of a new neighborhood wine group. Currently I have five residents who are eager to form a group but need a few more of their neighbors to join them. A group is made up of five to seven couples (singles are welcome) who meet once a month at a member’s home. Each pair brings a bottle of a preselected variety of wine plus an hors d’oeuvre to go with it. The participants hold a blind tasting, discuss and rate the wines, and then socialize while enjoying finger foods and good company. If you are interested, please sign up at the clubhouse; if you have any questions, call Barry Lea at 938-5580. Travel Club Norwegian Cruise Lines is bringing “Freestyle Cruising” to Tampa, and I have reserved space on the Norwegian Star. The cruise departs Tampa on March 4, 2012, for seven days with stops in Belize, Honduras, Costa Maya, and Cozumel. The cabin prices begin at $549.12 for an inside stateroom; outside with a porthole for $659.12; outside with a picture window at $699.12; and rooms with balconies for $879.12. All prices are per person, based on double occupancy, and do not include insurance and transfers. Based on the responses I have already received, this is sure to be another fun-filled Southshore Falls Travelers’ cruise. For more information, give me call or look for flyers at the clubhouse. My hold on group space has expired on Royal Caribbean’s November 12th seven-day Oasis of the Seas sailing from Fort Lauderdale, but bookings may still be available. Forty-five guests from Southshore Falls are already signed up. If you have been thinking about taking this cruise, I will try to get you the best price available. The initial deposit of $250 per person or $500 per cabin is fully refundable until August 29th. I have also negotiated a bus price of $60 per person, round trip, based on a minimum of forty-two passengers. Pat Lea Contact me at 938-5580 or [email protected] (note new e-mail address). Wine and Design Evening Southshore Falls “Wine & Design” event was really fun! Lots of participation from everyone present! I covered the basic principles of interior design, touching upon color theory, pattern flow, space correlation, scale and ways to assist smaller pieces and spaces with the use of accessories to draw your eye upward, creating focal points, deciding on best solutions for window treatments, to name a few. Many participants brought photos along and asked questions concerning what colors to paint walls, or what to bring to an existing room to add "pop", better ANGELA McKNIGHT Allied Member ASID ways to showcase wall groupings, and what might help 813-621-7585 ext. 128 complete a certain space. The prediction is for sixteen named storms, nine hurricanes, and five major hurricanes. Now is the time to get prepared. According to the NHC, there are several steps involved in being prepared. Some of those things include developing a family plan, creating a disaster supply kit, having a place to go, securing your home, and having a place for your pet. The most important thing you can do is to be informed and prepared. Disaster prevention includes both being prepared and reducing damage. Disaster prevention includes having the supplies on hand to weather the storm. The suggestions provided here are only guides. Why I did it: In 2002, I was 40 years old, 6 feet tall, 235 pounds and not in very good shape. Heart disease runs in my family. My dad succumbed to a massive heart attack at 49. His father and my great-grandfather died at about the same age. I was paranoid and felt that getting to my 50s might be out of reach due to genetic fate. By summer 2008, I had been working out at the local gym lifting weights. I had dropped some weight and was looking much better, but I lacked real conditioning. I had never been a swimmer, but I was comfortable in the water. I was watching the Olympics and told my wife, Debbie, I could swim as fast as those on television. We began teasing and kidding each other about my swimming ability. We decided to settle the dispute by seeing how fast I could swim. We went to the gym and Debbie brought the stopwatch. I swam across the pool in 12 seconds. Not bad, I thought. I figured I was almost as fast as an Olympian and that I'd won the argument with wife. Boy, did I have a lot to learn. HOW I DID IT: I started swimming at least three times a week. I would swim across the pool as fast as possible, catch my breath and then swim back. Then I met Laura Ghilik-Micu, a swim coach who taught me a lot about swimming -- the strokes, structured workouts and sets. She asked me about my goals, and I informed her that London 2012 sounded good. She chuckled and suggested I join and compete in Masters swimming. Laura also worked with my wife, a personal trainer (dpfitnessandwellness.com). In late 2008, I joined United States Masters Swimming. I swam my first event in February 2009 and was hooked. I kept swimming, and my wife kept coaching me about strength training and nutrition. I looked better than ever, I was down to 170 pounds. USMS events gave me motivation and a goal. Then, at one of the meets, a fellow USMS swimmer suggested I join the Tampa Metro Masters (TMM). I realize I won't swim at the Olympics, but I have competed in many meets, including the 2010 short-course nationals at Georgia Tech, where I was on deck and swimming with current and former Olympians. I met Rowdy Gaines and attended a clinic with Aaron Peirsol, who let me hold one of his Olympic gold medals from Beijing. HURDLES: On Oct. 26, 2010, I was 49 and swimming some long sets in the pool. I started to feel light-headed and stopped swimming. I never do that. I got out of the pool to sit for a few minutes. But as I got up, I felt hot, clammy and my back was tight. I got dressed for work, but I was sluggish. At work, co-workers said I looked terrible. I had all the signs of a heart attack, but finished my shift and went home. My chest still hurt the next morning, and my wife took me to the emergency room, Yes , I know I did everything wrong, and should have gone to the hospital right away. I spent two days in the cardiac care unit, and found out I didn't have a heart attack; I have heart disease and a couple of blocked arteries. I spent eight months dealing with doctors, tests and modifications with blood pressure and cholesterol medication. Though I eat well and exercise, I am a victim of genetics. My diet, exercise, and swimming probably saved my life, GOING THE DISTANCE: In April, I swam at the YMCA short-course nationals in Fort Lauderdale. The first day of the event coincided with the date when my life lasted longer than my father's. I swam in eight events and one relay. Without question, thanks to swimming, I have beat genetics. BEST ADVICE: Make fitness a part of your life, as fitness can save your life. Have a goal with whatever interests you. Kim’s Korner Dear Southshore Falls Residents: As many of you know, Craig Ayers, our former maintenance supervisor, has left to pursue a new career opportunity, and we wish him the best in his new endeavor. So you will certainly want to join me in extending a warm welcome to John Anzilotti, our new maintenance supervisor. John is originally from Chicago and came to Florida in 1999. He resides in Ruskin with his girlfriend of five years. Some of his hobbies include camping, cooking, golfing, and music. Professionally, he brings to Southshore Falls over ten years of maintenance experience including four years in an active adult community. John also holds his HVAC certification and his Certified Pool Operator license. If you have a maintenance concern, please e-mail John at [email protected]. I look forward to working with John, and I know that he is going to be a valuable asset to our team at Southshore Falls. That dreaded time of year for us Floridians has come again. Yes, another hurricane season is upon us! We are still looking for volunteers to call on to help prepare the Wellspring Club in case of a hurricane threat. Please contact Cathy Sobrito at the office if you are interested in helping out. We will be holding a Hurricane Volunteer meeting in early July to discuss the game plan to secure the building and pool areas. And regarding your own safety, please see the article regarding hurricane preparedness elsewhere in this newsletter. I am sure many of you have seen the new pool and cabana being constructed in the northwest section of the community. Construction is moving quickly, and these new amenities should be open in the next few months for the enjoyment of all. Cabana at the entrance to the new northwest pool: Work in progress as of June 17, 2011 Please remember to call the guard house at (813) 641-8742 to notify the guard on duty of any guests or deliveries expected. If you have any questions or concerns about the procedures at the gate house, please let me know. One last reminder: To respect the privacy of residents living in lakefront homes, please refrain from walking around the lakes in the easement area, the sloping area between the rear lot line and the water’s edge. My team and I appreciate your attention to these matters as we strive to maintain Southshore Falls as the beautiful community it is today!! We wish you all a safe and happy Fourth of July! Best regards, Kim Bittar, LCAM Community Manager [email protected]
