INTRODUCTION
Preparations for the Olympics Games 2016 – Heading for French Guiana !
As a country neighbouring Brazil, French Guiana is in an ideal geographical location for teams looking to
acclimatise and make final preparations ahead of the World Cup 2014.
French Guiana is the largest French overseas "department" with a landmass the size of Portugal. It is a haven of
France in South America, with all of the advantages which that entails in terms of health and safety.
Its positioning as the gateway for Europe into South America has been reinforced for a number of years now by
the strategic presence of the European Space Centre.
Furthermore, French Guiana is a country that is both welcoming and passionate about sport.
It has already witnessed and encouraged the emergence of various high-level athletes including Malia Metella
(European swimming gold medallist in 2003 and 2004, silver medallist at the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004)
and Lucie Decosse (triple judo world champion, gold medallist at the Olympic Games in London in 2012), as well
as football players such as Bernard Lama (winner of the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000), Florent Malouda
(winner of the English Premier League, runner-up at the 2006 World Cup, winner of the Champions League in
2012) and Jean-Claude Darcheville (Winner of the French Cup, French League Cup and runner-up in the
Scottish Premier League).
This technical file outlines the aquatic infrastructure which is either already in place or currently being developed
as part of the Guiana Advanced Base Camp 2014–2016 project.

As the north of Brazil, French Guiana has a tropical climate where mosquitoes can carry infectious diseases.
Malaria : preventative treatment only. It is not compulsory but is recommended for short stays.
Yellow fever : Brazil strongly recommend the vaccine. French Health requires that yellow fever vaccination is
compulsory when staying in Guiana. This follows the precautionary principle.
The vaccine has no major contraindication, it’s painless and does not cause any side effects.

Under certain condition, it may be considered with the Foreign Legion, based in Kourou, and the Marines, based in
Cayenne.
Tourism :
The diversity of tourism on offer is perfect for relaxation time.
