California Amend Instructions: If you used TurboTax Online to prepare and file your original return, follow these steps. If you used TurboTax Desktop, skip down to “Desktop Customer Start Here!” 1. Save Your TurboTax Online 2010 return to your computer: a. Sign in to TurboTax Online and open your tax return b. On the Home tab, click Save your 2010 return to your computer. 2. c. Save your return to your computer’s hard drive, preferably in the My Documents folder for Windows or the Documents folder for Mac. The file is saved with a .tax2010 filename extension. d. Click on Save & Sign Out in the upper right corner of screen Download the TurboTax Desktop version a. Go to http://turbotax.intuit.com/ and click on My Account b. Click on the Downloads and Unlocks c. Sign in using your User ID and Password. d. Click on the Downloads that are available e. Click the Sign Out in the upper right hand corner of the screen Desktop Customers Start Here! 3. Open Your Tax File in Desktop a. Open your desktop TurboTax product b. On the 1st screen select Find a Tax File c. Go to the folder or location where you saved the .tax2010 file d. Select the .tax2010 file, and then select Open e. From the File menu, choose Save All customers (TurboTax Online and Desktop) follow these steps to begin to amend your California return: Follow these steps to begin to amend your California return: 1. Select Forms 2. Scroll down the left side of screen to California Individual and click on Info Worksheet 3. Scroll down the California Information Worksheet to Part IX – Amended Return a. Check the box to indicate Filing a California amended return b. If you paid an amount when filing your original California return, enter that amount on the Previous California payment made line. You can find the amount you paid on California Form 540 2EZ, line 27. c. OR if you received a refund with your original California return, enter that amount on the Previous California refund received line. You can find the amount of your overpayment on California 540 2EZ, line 28. d. Click the QuickZoom box to go to Form 540X 4. Scroll down to the question “Have you been advised that your original federal tax return has been, is being, or will be audited?” and check “No.” 5. Scroll down to this section of the form: Note: The California Amend form is showing the numbers from your updated tax return in both columns A and B. You will need to change the amounts in Column A to the amounts from your original tax return – California Form 540 2EZ. 6. Enter the amounts below in Column A. Note: You will find these amounts on your original printed California 540 2EZ tax return. If there is no amount in either column A or C for that line, still check to see if there was an amount on the original return. Line: Line 1a Line 2c Description: State wages Unemployment compensation Enter from original Form 540 2EZ: Form 540 2EZ, line 9 Form 540 2EZ, line 14 Line 2d Social security benefits Form 540 2EZ, line 15 7. Scroll down to lines 7 through 16. 8. Enter the amounts below in Column A: Line: Line 7b Line 8 Line 12 Description: Tax Exemptions credits Special credits … Enter from original Form 540 2EZ: Form 540 2EZ, line 17 Form 540 2EZ, line 18 Form 540 2EZ, line 19 9. Scroll down to lines 17 through 26. 10. Enter the amounts below in Column A: Line: Line 17 Description: California income tax withheld Enter from original Form 540 2EZ: Form 540 2EZ, line 22 11. Line 25: If taxes were paid with original return, verify the amount; if no taxes were paid, enter zero. 12. Scroll down to lines 26a through 34 13. Line 27: Overpaid taxes: If taxes were overpaid (refunded) with original return, verify the amount; if no taxes were overpaid, enter zero. 14. Enter the following amounts: Line: Line 30 Description: Voluntary contributions as shown on original return Enter from original Form 540 2EZ: Form 540 2EZ. Line 26 15. Scroll down to Part II, Explanation of Changes. Enter the follow: Line: Line 1 Description: Enter name and address… Line 2 Line 3 Line 4 Filing ….final determination Have been advised… Did you file an amended return with the IRS on similar basis Enter from original Form 540 2EZ: Enter “same” if address not changed since filing the original return otherwise enter name & address from original return Check “no” Check “no” Check “yes” 16. In this area, enter the following information: ‘On the original 540 2EZ, California state W-2 wages reported on Line 9 from Form W-2, box 16, incorrectly included wages from other state(s). This has been amended in this return.’ Now it’s time to print and mail your amended return. Follow these steps: 1) On the toolbar, click on File and then Print 2) Choose All official forms required for filing 3) Uncheck the box for Form 1040: Individual 4) If necessary check the box for California Individual 5) Click Print button 6) The forms to mail to California will print. 7) The instructions will indicate any balance due that you need to pay or refund that you will receive. It will also include the address to mail the return. 8) Be sure to print out an extra copy to keep for your files.
