Chairman’s Message
Well, one down and it is quickly on to the next one, ‘Great Whites to Great Whites’.
The sense of responsibility is different this year. The workload has increased and your efforts last year were
so outstanding, in raising a record $2.33m (net), that the pressure builds for me to deliver another good
result. I really appreciate all your efforts, knowing that you all do your best to positively change the lives of
children in need.
It is exciting for me planning a Bash for you through Eyre Peninsula. I spent the first 55 years of my life in
this great part of the state. I hope you enjoy what we have for you and I think you will get a sense of the
personality of the place. We should have plenty of time to enjoy this region with the Bash covering only
2,250kms. Thank you to “The Brides” for organising our Pre-Bash Party at the Yacht Club on Friday night.
Starting in Port Lincoln is a bit of a drive but it is a reward for this community and the support we get from
there. It is also a great launching pad for the event, allowing more time to enjoy rather than add more
distance to the event. We spend the first four days on the West Coast before heading north. This includes
a two night stay in Smoky Bay. The community are very excited about our visit and it promises to take the
Seafood Lunch to another level. We have a surprise for you with Patrick McMahon back to entertain us on
night one in Smoky Bay. You all asked for a two night stop over, so it is the Golden Rule, you raise the gold
so you make the rules...delivered!
The other thing you asked for was a full camp out night…delivered at North Well. Everything is being
brought in and everyone is camping out. This is also a BYO night. Matt & Lynly Keirin are our hosts and they
are doing everything they can to make it a great night.
Then it is on to Woomera, Port Augusta and finish in Clare, the home of our Platinum Sponsor, Tim Adams
Wines. Again Clare has been rewarded for the great support we get through the community and the local
Bash cars. To Tim and Pam, this is your fifth year as our Platinum Sponsor and we say thank you from all of
us! This is remarkable given you continue to fundraise and run Team TAA in the event.

Chair of the Board’s Message
We are full steam ahead in the planning for the 28th Bash and in my first year as Chair of the Variety Board, I
am no stranger to the Variety Bash. I was first introduced to Variety with my husband Chris way back in 1989
in the inaugural SA Bash when we provided medical support. We were drawn into the family quickly and
have since completed 25 Bashes between us and have been long term Business Partners of Variety SA.
Everyone knows Variety. When I speak to people outside of Variety, they are intrigued about how we can make
so much money for the children whilst having so much fun. I explain that it’s because we are surrounded by
people who simply care and work extremely hard to improve the lives of children in South Australia.
As always we have many special awards on the Bash acknowledging our long term Bashers who have
contributed for 5 years and beyond… On the other end of the scale, I welcome and thank our Bash virgins.
With Variety now being 41 years old in Australia, it’s continued success relies on new people becoming
involved. We hope they too will receive many milestone recognitions in the future.
Our Bash Chairman, Brenton ‘Rambo’ Ramsey has embraced the role with passion and is working very hard
with his team to guarantee us a unique and exciting event for the second year under his stewardship. He is a
volunteer, as many of us are in the Variety family, and we appreciate his dedication putting together another
great Bash.
It doesn’t matter how long you have been involved in Variety, a highlight is always seeing how we all impact
on the lives of SA children in need. As Bash entrants we are privileged to see firsthand on the track a few of
the many grants Variety delivers. I am pleased to say in the last financial year Variety helped just under 50,000
children in South Australia and this would not be possible without Variety’s flagship event; the Bash creating
an amazing record last year of $2.33 million net for our kids!
Fundraising goes beyond our entrants, whether you are a Mobile Workshop, Official, staff member, supporter,
or sponsor we are all on the “same team” and same cause “Variety” and on behalf of the children and their
families who benefit from this, a truly heartfelt thanks to you all.
The foundation laid by our sponsors is invaluable. To Tim and Pam as our Platinum Sponsors from Tim Adams
Wines a profound thank you. It’s one thing to be a sponsor; it’s another thing to back that up with your

CEO’s Message
The SA Variety Bash defies so many accepted ‘norms’ of the world we live in today.
How many events or projects, or businesses for that matter, that were created in 1989 are still operating today
in very much the same format of the original concept? Maybe this is one reason why our beloved Bash is so
very successful, that it reminds us of a past that is less complicated, less technical and yet very personal.
To me that is what makes the Bash, the personal investment made by so many people in so many different
ways to ensure everyone has a great time and can’t wait to return to do it again. It’s the personalities that drive
the Bash combined with an incredible spirit of generosity and giving in all its forms.
To be fair, great leaps have been made within the SA Variety Bash to ensure the technology of the day is used
to ensure safety above all - our number one priority for our entrants and officials.
Going back to defying the norms, every marker in terms of history, economy, post National Bash downturns
were all defied last year with a record $2.33m result. That is stunning and I can share with you the awe in which
this result is held by the Variety community nationally.
You would be aware that we needed to diversify our Variety business to lessen our reliability on our motoring
events and to create new revenue streams to engage more people into the Variety family. Over the past 12
months examples of this strategy include the Variety Foundation House, Footy Jet, Radiothon and corporate
partnerships on a National scale.
All these new initiatives can be driven on the back of our knowledge that the Bash and the many other events
and functions we stage have significant historical success and will always do the heavy lifting towards funding
our ever expanding grants program.
We operate from solid foundations built by our generous sponsors and I acknowledge and thank Tim and
Pam and Tim Adams Wines / Mr Mick for their friendship, personal support and leadership of this group as
Platinum sponsors. We are indebted to our sponsors for their investment, combined with the other income
including the provisions fees which allows for 100% of the fundraising generated by entrants to directly
support children in need.
To our Chairman, Brenton ‘Rambo’ Ramsey I offer my sincere appreciation. His leadership, direction and
management of the committee and volunteers is exceptional and is only matched by his personal rapport
with his Bashers. I would also acknowledge all our officials, doctors and MW’s for their tireless efforts and
assure you this is not taken for granted and contributes significantly to the event’s reputation nationally.

2015 Bash Hall of Fame
It was 1998 when, to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the South
Australian Bash, the Bash Hall of Fame was established. This
recognised those who had completed ten Bash events.
In 2004, the fifteen year category was added. In 2008, the 20 year
category began, and in 2013 we added the 25 year category! Variety
congratulates all our “Hall of Famers”… what extraordinary dedication

Variety Grants
In 2015 Variety SA made available 213 grants to
the value of $3.75 million through our programs,
benefiting over 49,000 children in South Australia:

The Variety Caring for Kids program provides essential medical equipment for families at
home as well as for South Australian health services including hospitals, intensive care
units and specialised medical services. Variety finances the purchase of much needed
medical equipment in addition to recreational equipment that can be utilised by
children during their recovery.

The Variety Freedom Program enables children with physical disabilities to participate in
daily activities by providing wheelchair accessible vehicles, customised tricycles, walking
frames, standing frames, leg splints, wheelchair lifters and more to help children gain
independence and freedom.
Liberty Swings
Remember the feeling of swinging through the air with the wind on your face and the
freedom you felt? Every child deserves to have this experience. This normally simple
pleasure was never an option for children in wheelchairs until an Australian invention
came along, the Liberty Swing. Unless you witness it, you cannot begin to imagine the
sheer delight on the faces of the children who ride a Liberty Swing for the first time. Variety
champions this wonderful invention with its aim to install Liberty Swings in as many
communities as possible.
Sunshine Coaches $616,153
Variety - the Children’s Charity brings sunshine to the lives of thousands of children
through Sunshine Coaches. Special schools and other organisations have been grateful
recipients of a fleet of more than 1,200 coaches travelling Australia, transporting
children to their daily activities and other special life experiences.

The Variety Future Kids program helps kids who are disadvantaged or have special
needs to fulfil their dreams and reach their full potential; including the provision
of specialist computer packages and communication devices as well as providing
a range of experiences for children. Variety is a supporter of special education and
disadvantaged schools throughout the state.
The Variety @ Work program and Ladies of Variety (LOV) provide an array of outings and
fun activities throughout the year, including the Children’s Easter Picnic at Adelaide Zoo,
the Surprise Party at Adelaide Convention Centre and the Children’s Christmas Party at
Adelaide Showgrounds, along with many smaller activities for schools, organisations
and individuals.

This is Why We Do It!
Biar’s Story
Fleeing war-torn South Sudan at age seven, Biar, now 16, is on his way to becoming one
of Australia’s best basketball players despite the hardship he has faced growing up.
Having just been selected in the South Australian Under 18 Basketball team, he is their
youngest member and living a dream made possible with a Scholarship from Variety –
the Children’s Charity and the support of his school community.
When Biar first arrived in Australia at age seven his only family left were his
grandmother and younger brother. Both his parents were victims of the Sudanese War:
his father died and his mother is still missing.
After arriving from an Ethiopian refugee camp, his local primary school noticed Biar was
different: he was a natural athlete with skills and abilities unlike most other children. His
teachers watched him reach a 15 in the beep fitness test - a level unheard of for such
a young child - and contacted Trinity College who were also quick to recognise Biar’s
skills. Biar’s natural athletic ability is now the most developed in the school.
Recently Biar was one of only two South Australian teenagers to be accepted into
Basketball Australia’s Development Camp. This exclusive camp accepts only the top 20
basketball players aged between 15 and 17 who are flagged to be the next generation
of Olympians.
Biar’s situation has required the local community to pay for his current coaching,
equipment and basketball trips, although Biar is the last to ask for help.
Rupert Sapwell, Director of Sport at Trinity College: “For a while he was playing in shoes
that were two sizes too small, he couldn’t afford to buy new ones, but didn’t want to ask.
Now that we know, we are always making sure he has the right size clothes and shoes.
We all look out for him”.
Biar and his supporters are delighted that he has been granted a $3000 Show of Hearts
Scholarship from Variety - the Children’s Charity of South Australia, which assisted him
in being able to travel to the National Championships in Ballarat in 2015.
The list of accomplishments has not gone to the young boy’s head - Rupert says he has
remained incredibly humble. “He is liked by all the kids, they look out for him and are so
proud of what he is achieving, there is no ego, no attitude.”
Poppy’s Story
Seven year old Poppy from Port Lincoln lives with a rare brain disorder known as
Pachygyria. This means that she faces a number of challenges, including developmental
and intellectual delays as well as poor muscle tone. She is described by her mother as a
cheeky little girl with a lot of spirit, so it is frustrating for her that she is unable to speak,
however she has learnt sign language and also uses a communication book.
Now, thanks to Variety - the Children’s Charity of South Australia, this little girl’s future is
looking a lot brighter and stronger. The charity has granted close to $10,000 for sensory
play equipment which includes pulley and tracking systems to help improve her balance,
which is affected by her disorder, and will aid in her goal for independent mobility.
Poppy’s mother Kerryn says this equipment will change Poppy’s life. “Until now we have
had to drive to Adelaide every few months and stay for a week. Now having this sensory
equipment at home Poppy will be able to exercise every day”.
The family have generously agreed to allow other children in the community living
with similar needs to use the equipment. “Living in a remote area means we just don’t
have access to these sorts of facilities, now other children will be able to use Poppy’s
equipment which is great for the whole community,” Kerryn said.
Variety SA CEO Mark McGill explains this is what Variety SA is all about. “We are so
pleased to assist Poppy, our goal at Variety is to help kids be kids and now with this new
equipment Poppy will be able to reach her goals faster,” he said.
Kerryn says her appreciation for Variety’s support is limitless. “We are eternally grateful
to Variety for giving us the grant to purchase the equipment we need to assist Poppy
to have a better quality of life, also to all the people who work hard to help raise these
funds”.

PORT LINCOLN
Port Lincoln was discovered by Matthew
Flinders under his commission by the
British Admiralty to chart Australia’s
unexplored coastline. The converted
collier ‘Investigator’ dropped anchor in
Boston Bay in February 1802 and Flinders
named the spot Port Lincoln after his
native Lincolnshire.
Port Lincoln was initially considered as
the alternative site for the state’s capital,
but was subsequently rejected by Colonel
Light in 1836 in favour of Adelaide. Lack
of fresh water supplies was a major
determining factor.
Port Lincoln is the seafood and
aquaculture capital of Australia, home to
the country’s largest commercial fishing
fleet and renowned for its southern
bluefin tuna, King George whiting,
western king prawns and southern rock
lobster.
The southern bluefin tuna ranching
industry employs up to 1000 people
and is a key tourist attraction. SBT are
captured live in the Great Australian
Bight, transferred to pontoons which
hold approx. 9000 fish and are towed to
the aquaculture zone and transferred to
smaller pontoons east of Boston Island.
The tuna are fed mostly local sardines,
with a grow out period lasting 3-6
months.
Today there are approx. 95 individual
pontoons each containing around 2800
fish. Over 8000 tonne will be produced in
2016 with an estimated value of between
AUD$150-300 million.
Melbourne Cup winner ”Makybe Diva” is
also on the foreshore lawns adjacent to
our start line.
By far our biggest attraction in Port
Lincoln is that it is the home of “The
Brides” Bash Car MLC and our local Mrs.
Variety, Sandra Lukin and Tony, Car 727.
Also in Port Lincoln is Kym Penalurik from
Car 22 “ The Stockman” and the nearby
Tumby Bay Bash car “ The Fairies”.
We are looking forward to a great start in
Port Lincoln.
With a population of approximately
14,500 and situated on Boston Bay, Port
Lincoln is one of the largest protected
natural harbours in the world and three
times the size of Sydney Harbour.
The association with the ocean doesn’t
end with seafood; Port Lincoln is home
to a number of iconic marine wildlife
experiences including swimming with
southern bluefin tuna, the Australian
sea lion and the ultimate experience of
swimming with the Great White shark.

COFFIN BAY
The beautiful idyllic town of Coffin Bay,
surrounded by sea and National Parks,
overlooks the pristine waters of Port
Douglas and Kellidie Bay, which are part
of an extensive bay system that includes
Little Douglas, Mount Dutton and Yangie
Bays. In these bays, you will see numerous
pods of dolphins whilst some of the
islands are home to seals and sea lions
and many breeding seabirds.
In 1966, Broken Hill Proprietary Company
Limited established a private railway
between Coffin Bay and Port Lincoln to
convey lime sands. It was closed in 1989,
with the track removed in 2001. It is this
track that we use through the SA Water
Reserve to travel from Port Lincoln to
Coffin Bay.
When Rambo’s parents moved to Port
Lincoln to live in his teenage years they
owned a shack alongside the current
wharf just to the left of the carpark. Many
fantastic fishing days were spent at Coffin
Bay however the Government forced us
to knock it down because back in the
70’s it was below the high water mark …
bastards!
ARNO BAY
The pub has 120 Solar Panels.
Situated on the western tip of southern
Eyre Peninsula, Coffin Bay is 46 kilometres
by road northwest of Port Lincoln. It
boasts a steady growth in population and
industry (aquaculture), with a permanent
population of approximately 650, which
swells to over 4,000 in the summer
months.
Coffin Bay has an active commercial wharf
in the town centre where the fishing
boats unload their catches, including
crayfish, pilchards, ocean jackets and
sharks. There are also professional
fishermen and abalone divers operating
from the boat ramps. Their catches
include octopus, sea urchins, sea snails,
scallops, sand crabs, abalone, King George
whiting and garfish. At the main boat
ramp you will also see the oyster boats
returning with baskets of the famous
Coffin Bay oysters, from the many oyster
leases within the bay system.
As the open ocean lies 21 kilometres
from the town wharf, the many protected
bays, channels and inlets offer ideal
opportunities for fishing and all water
activities.
The area was settled by pastoralists in
1863. The town became a small port
importing super phosphate fertilisers
for farmers and exporting locally grown
grain. In 1940 the town was exporting
11,000 tons of grain by ketch. It was
this year also that the town’s name was
changed from “Bligh”, after Captain
William Bligh, to Arno Bay.
The period of high export came to an
end in 1963 when the grain silos were
built and ocean shipping was replaced by
road transport, trucking the grain to Port
Lincoln for export. This signalled the end
of Arno Bay as a port, eventually leading
to its current position as a tourist and
fishing town.
Some interesting and useless facts:
Arno Bay is the birthplace of the famous
Crows ruckman and dual premiership
player, Shaun Rehn. Shaun’s family still
farms at Arno Bay.
The biggest snapper caught to date is
44lb and is hanging in the pub.

The game of “Crib” has been played in the
pub since 1908 and is still being played
around 4.30pm most nights by a few
locals.
Arno Bay’s last football game was in 1988,
coached by todays publican, Fricky. They
lost every game and the last one to Port
Neil by over 40 goals. They amalgamated
with Port Neil in 1989 but still yet to win
an A Grade premiership. Perhaps Fricky
needs to coach again.
The boardwalk down at the creek over the
mangroves was built by volunteer labour
and is loved by tourists.
The Marina/Boat Ramp was built to aid
Clean Seas Fishery, which specialised in
growing kingfish.
Rambo spent his primary school years
holidaying at the family shack in Arno
Bay. They used to set the net out front of
the shack and row the dingy around the
net every morning. They had to belt the
stingrays away with the oar to get the fish
out.
WUDINNA
The enormous silos in Wudinna are
indicative of the town’s major grain
industry, predominantly wheat and
barley, grown here since the first pastoral
lease was granted in 1861. Wudinna was
proclaimed a town in 1916 and has since
grown as a service centre to the Eyre
Peninsula.
BUCKLEBOO
Buckleboo is a wheat farming community
35 km northwest of Kimba, on South
Australia’s Eyre Peninsula.
Buckleboo is home to ‘Buckleboo Park’
which consists of 6 tennis courts and
an oval for Australian Rules football and
cricket. Nicknamed the ‘Club in the Scrub’
many have played and savoured their
time at Buckleboo. At one time Buckleboo
had its own footy team in a four team
Kimba football league. Now, all those four
teams have amalgamated to form one
team in the Eastern Eyre Football League.
Buckleboo was, until 2005, the railhead
for the Eyre Peninsula Railway. This was
a narrow gauge railway to haul grain
via Kimba and Cummins to Port Lincoln
for export. It was proclaimed in 1925
and named after the adjacent pastoral
run. There was a school at Buckleboo
from 1929 to 1949. The silos at the
former railway station and the few
remaining buildings are surrounded by
the Buckleboo Conservation Reserve,
proclaimed in 1990.
In the late 1980’s Rambo and his mates
used to drive through the sand track from
Wudinna to Buckleboo Club for beers
on Sunday morning. They used to call it
“Sunday School”. In those days Sunday
School used to go for a long time. The trip
home was always a bit hairy.
Scattered throughout the district are icons
such as the “Australian Farmer” granite
sculpture, Australia’s second largest
monolith, “Mt. Wudinna” and Minnipa’s
famous wave shaped Pildappa Rock .
The area is known as granite country.
The district stretches to the border of the
unspoilt Gawler Ranges National Park.
Granite mining has occurred in Wudinna
since the 1990’s. Granite blocks quarried
near Mt. Wudinna can be up to 8 cubic
metres in volume, weighing 20 tonnes
and are used in Australia and exported
to Asia and Europe. This granite was used
to construct the “Australian Farmer”, an 8
metre high statue on the Eyre Highway at
the entrance to the town.
Wudinna is 580 kms west of Adelaide and
has a population of 557 in town and a
district population of 1,333 covering an
area of 5393 square kilometres.
If you are interested in a town with more
females then males, 93% of the population
born in Australia, 99% only speak English,
where unemployment is only 1.9% and
the average rent is $100 per week then
Wudinna is the place for you.
Chairman Rambo moved from Cleve to
Wudinna in 1984 (Lincoln, of the Johnnie
Walkers, was 3 years old at the time) and
spent the best 29 years in Wudinna.
Last time the Bash visited Wudinna,
even though Rambo had lived there for
a long time, he got lost going home to
his accommodation. Must have been
something he ate!
WIRRULA
Wirrulla is a small grain belt town located
60 km from Streaky Bay on the Eyre
Peninsula. The town is a focus point for
many of the surrounding agricultural
districts, and features a number of silos
used to store grain from the surrounding
areas. The name of the town is derived
from an aboriginal word meaning “to
make haste, to be quick”.
The town was established after the
Wirrilla Estate, owned by Mr D.H. Power,
was subdivided in 1914, growing around
a railway siding. It was, and continues
to be, a useful stop for travellers making
their way to the Gawler Ranges, which lie
40 km to the north of the township.
Adjacent to the pub, Wirrula has an
unusual tourist attraction - an inland jetty,
possibly one of the few in the world. The
annual fishing competition attracts a
large crowd but no one has been able to
land a fish yet.
For those looking for their first home,
you can pick up a nice 3-bedroom prefab
for $120,000 that is close to the jetty, the
Gawler Ranges and only 672 kms from
Adelaide for shopping and the footy!

SMOKY BAY
Smoky Bay is a thriving community
of 200 people (rising to 1,000 in peak
season) and is located 40kms south of
Ceduna. The coastline was first explored
by Captain Matthew Flinders in 1802 and
was named Smoky Bay because of the
amount of smoke caused by the fires from
the local Aboriginal people. To this day,
the name has stuck.
Today the town exists to service the local
farming, thriving oyster growing and
fishing industries and as a tourist holiday
destination.
“Kiwi” Evans was the first person to farm
oysters in Smoky Bay in 1988. New leases
were granted shortly after in the back
part of the bay but these proved unviable.
After a bloom of macro algae (sea lettuce)
smothered the oysters in the back part of
the bay it was agreed to allow growers to
shift their farming operations out to the
sand banks further out near Eyre Island.
The industry has not looked back since.
In order to take the industry to the next
level, the new boat ramp was built in 2000
and the Smoky Bay Aquaculture Park was
developed and available to growers in
2003 on a 15 year loan through lease fees.
Smoky Bay would arguably be the second
most recognizable oyster growing area
in South Australia and also in terms
of production and growers. Whilst
production varies depending on seasonal
conditions, Smoky Bay would harvest
approx. 2 million dozen oysters per
annum.
The Aquaculture Park is definitely the
best oyster land-based facility in South
Australia and one of the best in Australia.
Smoky Bay oysters are recognized as
being truly pristine and having that
sensational salty sweet flavour and
the growers are also recognized as
progressive, community minded people.
We are the guests of the Smoky Bay
community for 2 nights and you will
experience their community spirit and
wonderful oysters by the bucket load.

SKULL TANKS
Nothing much here!
During the late 19th century, rain sheds
were built along South Australian stock
routes to provide water for stock as they
were moved throughout the state’s midnorth. The rain sheds are low structures
made of corrugated iron sheets that are
angled inwards to a gutter. The gutter
flows water into tanks that are partially
buried underground.
Skull Tanks is located on the intersection
of the Mt.Ive /Moonarie Road and the
Wirulla /Kingoonya Road.
Many years ago Skull Tanks was the site of
a near catastrophe. Rambo was travelling
to the Kingoonya Races and spent too
long in the Wirrula pub on the way. Late at
night and worse for wear they camped at
this location. They lit a fire and got some
shut eye. He woke the following morning
after a freezing night with the top burnt
out of his pom pom hat! Must have been
cold…
NORTH WELL
STATION
North Well and its surrounds were
renowned gold mining areas in the late
1800’s and early 1900’s, before sheep and
cattle roamed the land. There are many
abandoned mine leases scattered across
the southern end of North Well so be
careful when getting out of your car for
a toilet stop! This area also had its very
own gold mining town named Glenloth,
complete with gold battery and miner’s
shanty’s which still stand today, perched
on the western edge of Lake Harris. With
miners came great thirst and with this
great thirst the miners built a pub. The
Glenloth Hotel was granted a license in
1904 and served the miners until 1916
when according to reports there was “a
complete lack of liquor”. This conundrum
came about due to the changeover from
the alcohol being delivered by mule
teams directly to the hotel, to the alcohol
now being delivered by steam on the
brand new east-west railway line to the
siding named Kingoonya some 50kms
south. The load would somehow ‘go
astray’ over the 50km from Kingoonya and
by the time the cart reached the Glenloth
Hotel, it was rather empty of supplies!
This was the demise of the Glenloth Hotel
and its miners it would seem! Keep an eye
out for tell-tale signs of this history as you
travel through the Glenloth and Battery
paddocks on your way to the homestead.
North Well is owned by AJ & PA McBride
and was first purchased by AJ McBride
senior in 1924 as part of the large pastoral
lease of Wilgena – at the time totalling well
over 8000 sq km. Wilgena was ‘split’ rather
unequally not long after the lease was
taken up and 3,827 sq km of it became
‘North Well’. The homestead was built 6km
north west of Kingoonya in 1927, a new
home for Mr McBride’s daughter Pat who
was recently married. The new homestead
was made of stone quarried from the
property, and at the time was quite the
envy of neighbouring pastoralists. Three
other outstation houses were built across
the property during this time also. These
outstation houses were home to many
stockmen and their families who each
looked after their part of the property on
a day to day basis under the control of the
manager at the main homestead. Sheep
numbers swelled during the two decades
after the lease was taken up and in 1932
North Well shore a massive 82,000 sheep.
Numbers then averaged out to between
40-50,000 until the 1970’s when numbers
were around 30,000.
Today North Well consistently shears
20,000 merino sheep and also runs
approximately 700 shorthorn cattle.
North Well has 62 paddocks, 51 watering
points, 250km of pipeline, approximately
2,500km of fencing and 1,000km of
internal roads to maintain. Staffing
numbers have dwindled over time and
the once full outstations housing up to
forty staff were abandoned during the
1980’s. North Well is now staffed and run
all from the main complex, with four full
time staff running the property. North
Well also has the prestigious title of where
one strapping young station hand began
his working life before moving on to
bigger and better things. A likely young
lad from car number 16 – The Johnnie
Walkers could probably tell you a bit more
about the ins and outs of life on North
Well.
Another interesting note; North Well is
home to a resident ghost who likes to
assert her presence to new visitors. While
mainly haunting the homestead when
guests are there she has been known to
venture across to the shearers quarters to
dish out her welcome. You may be lucky
enough to meet her on your visit?!
BILLA KALINA
STATION
Billa Kalina is a cattle station 5,000 square
kilometres (500,000 hectares) in size. It
shares boundaries with Anna Creek to the
north, Stuart Creek to the east, Parakylia
to the south and Millers Creek to the west.
It is also situated within the Woomera
Rocket Range and the Dog Fence passes
through the property. The Greenfield
family have owned Billa Kalina since 1937.

Station was purchased in 1994 and is

Dog Fence, so it runs 10,000 white dorper
sheep and approx. 100 cattle.
Both properties are inside the Woomera
Prohibited Area and the Greenfields have
had a close association with Defence
since the late 1950’s.
Billa Kalina has a 75 year average of
143mm of rain (almost 6 inches). It has
3 artesian bores, approx. 15 mound
springs, 11 sub artesian bores (3 windmill
and 8 solar or electric), 21 large dams
which can last up to 12 months when
full, approx. 20 short term catch-holes
and 75kms of pipeline with 11 watering
points. It has 23 sets of steel drafting /
trucking yards and 6 holding paddocks.
The northern half of the property is
mostly open stony tablelands with creeks
that drain into Lake Eyre South and the
southern half is generally sandy with cane
grass swamps. This is the area that we are
travelling through.
The average herd size is 3,900 which are
90% Poll Shorthorn and the bulls are left
in all year round -lucky bulls!

WOOMERA
Woomera is an iconic Australian town
located in South Australia’s far north
region, approximately 446 kilometres
north of Adelaide. In reality, Woomera
also refers to the wider ‘Woomera
Range Complex’ (WRC), a huge Defence
systems testing range covering an area of
approximately 122,000 square kilometres
(roughly an area the size of England).
For Bashers, Woomera is home to the
Eldo Hotel and the Cudgee Bar at the
Caravan Park. Bash Survey teams have
been known to enjoy a small drink at
the Cudgee and highly recommend the
experience.
Today, Woomera township is in fact part
of a new Australian Defence Force base
(RAAF Base Woomera) which, along with
the Woomera Test Range (WTR), forms
the larger entity known as the Woomera
Range Complex’(WRC).
Woomera Village (as it has always been
known) is a Defence owned and operated
facility. RAAF Base Woomera, when it was
established in January 2015, also included
the RAAF Woomera Aerodrome, which is
approximately 6 km north of Woomera
Village. The aerodrome lies within the
‘Red Zone’ of the Woomera Prohibited
Area (WPA) and public access to this part
of the base is not permitted. Woomera
Village, however, is within a ‘Green Zone’
area of the WPA and thus public access
to the facilities and services of Woomera,
including the several museums located in
this historic site is permitted year round.

privately operated public caravan park at
the entrance to Woomera Village.
Since its construction over 1947–53,
Woomera Village has essentially operated
under a specialised Commonwealth/
Defence township’management model
rather than a local government (council)
model. At the height of its operations,
over 7000 people lived in Woomera
Village.
The Range was first established in support
of the Anglo-Australian Joint Project.
This cold-war project focussed on the
development of long-range weapons
systems, principally to counter the
growing intercontinental ballistic missile
threat from the former Soviet Union. The
cold-war heyday of the Range was 1947
to about 1972.
The Range today is much smaller than it
was in 1947, but still covers one-seventh
of the State of South Australia. Although
there are now several major mines
established within the WPA, the Woomera
Support Base is the only permanently
established township facility in the WPA.
The WPA covers an area of roughly one
and half times the size of Scotland or
similar in area to the US State of New
York, and is the world’s largest land-based
instrumented defence systems test and
evaluation range facility.
Woomera is also the site of the Cleve
Football Club versus the Village Club trial
game played when Rambo was just 17
years old. It took him a day to get there
and he had to show ID at the “Border
gate”. After a big day and a huge night
they just opened the gate on the way
home to get rid of them.
PORT
AUGUSTA
Port Augusta is a seaport and railway
junction city located on the east coast of
the Spencer Gulf immediately south of
the gulf’s head and about 322 kilometres
north of Adelaide.
The city consists of an urban area
extending along the Augusta and Eyre
Highways from the coastal plain on the
west side of the Flinders Ranges and the
eastern side of Spencer Gulf and Eyre
Peninsula and has a warm desert
climate Summers are hot and dry, while
winters are mild and damp.
The natural harbour was founded in1852
by Alexander Elder and John Grainger
who selected the location for the port. Mr.
Grainger was a member of Government
from Adelaide. The port was named after
Augusta Sophia, Lady Young, the wife of
the Governor of South Australia, Sir Henry
Edward Fox Young.
According to the 2006 census the
population of the Port Augusta census
area was 13,257 people, making
it the second largest urban area
after Whyalla on the Eyre Peninsula.
In 1878, the town became the southern
terminus of a proposed North South
transcontinental line, headed for Darwin
and later renamed the Central Australia
Railway, in 1929 it was extended to its last
terminus at Alice Springs.
Between 1913 and 1917, the 2,000 km
long east–west transcontinental railway
was built from Port Augusta to Kalgoorlie.
This was built to standard gauge as part
of a long term plan to harmonise gauges
between the mainland states, causing
a break-of-gauge at Port Augusta until it
was extended to Port Pirie in 1937.
The standard gauge Adelaide-Darwin
railway was finally completed in
2003. Port Augusta is a stop on the Indian
Pacific transcontinental train service on
the Sydney–Perth railway and on The
Ghan service between Adelaide, Alice
Springs and Darwin. One service a week
for each train in each direction serve the
station.
Electricity generation was closed
down in May 2016 after being
generated at the Playford B (240 MW)
and Northern power stations (520 MW)
from brown coal mined at Leigh Creek.

CLARE
As one of the larger towns in the region,
Clare is an administrative and service
centre for the surrounding area and is
home to Tim Adams Wines, Mr Mick’s,
Richard Elkhoury’s (Terry White) Pharmacy
and is a hot spot for Bashers like Canooe
Catford. It seems that Gibbo is always
trying to look like a Clare local.
Clare has become recognised for its
‘experiences’, including the Riesling Trail –
the walking and cycling route from 9 km
north of Clare to Auburn (25 km) on the
former railway alignment, so named as it
weaves past vineyards and wineries, and
continuing to Riverton as the Rattler Trail.
The Clare Valley wine region continues
within the same line of hills as the famous
Barossa Valley, and also produces some
excellent wine. The pies and pasties at the
main street bakery are highly regarded by
OVZ and OV1.
Sundrop Farms is investing in a
combined solar power tower, greenhouse
and desalination plant and is being
constructed to produce tomatoes. The
solar tower can be seen on the west of the
main road just east of the Power Station.
Within Port Augusta is the City of Port
Augusta’s Wadlata Outback Centre,
providing tourists with an introduction
to life in the Australian outback. The
centre recorded over 500,000 visitors
in 2006. North of town, on the Stuart
Highway, are the Australian Arid Lands
Botanic Gardens. The gardens have a cafe/
restaurant with views across the saltbush
plains to the escarpment of the Flinders
Ranges, more than 100,000 people visited
the gardens in 2006.
CRYSTAL
BROOK
Crystal Brook, named after the spring-fed
creek next to which it was founded, is 197
kilometres north of Adelaide and has a
population of 1,200.
The town is situated on Goyder’s Line near
the border of two climate systems. While
apparently cold and semi-arid, the town
benefits from a temperate Mediterranean
climate zone near to the east making
possible slightly more intense farming in

the region. To the west and north-west
lies some marginal, semi-arid farmland.
The local farming community still
supports many small businesses in the
town.
Crystal Brook (or creek) supplied water to
the town until 1890 when the Beetaloo
Reservoir was completed, which at the
time was the largest concrete dam in the
southern hemisphere.
We will be in Crystal Brook on Show Day
so there will be a great chance to mix with
the locals over lunch.
Wikipedia advises that Crystal Brook
boasts two prominent citizens including
our own Deputy Chair and beloved
Basher Rob Kerin. For some reason
Wikipedia thinks he is prominent for
being a former Premier of South Australia!

heading off to check our Bash tracks
before you’ve even had your first cup of
coffee!
They are quite a rare find – we hardly
ever see them – but rest assured they are
hard at work behind the scenes ensuring
our tracks are safe and ready for the Bash
contingent to pass through.

team. Alex Richards. Bazz is going to be
swanning around the country in his new
camper van and has left the responsibility
for everything on Ron’s shoulders.
Nothing really unusual about that Ron
reckons. Ron says that he’s really happy
to get a break from Bazz because Alex at
least will have some new things to talk
about, not all the old boring stuff Bazz
goes on about. Also, Alex knows how
the computer works so that will be a real
bonus because neither Ron nor Bazz do.
Ron says he’s looking forward to catching
up on some sleep while Alex is doing all
the driving. Ah, the joys of exploiting the
younger generation. Welcome to OV4

new to the event they asked Rambo what

Of course, Rambo had a bit of inside

their endeavours on the Variety 4WD

The SV team on the Challenge is managed
by Peter and the CAT (catering) Team
is headed up by Steve. Between them
they have clocked up over 40 years of
experience and logistical know-how
organising not just Variety but other
outback events. This year Rambo has
promoted these veterans to OV6 with
added “stuff” to do.

Mark & I ended up at House of Chow
where Roz Chow spoke to us about doing

the car and celebrated so much, we had
to stay at the Port Vincent Motel for the
night. The following day, I rang Mark and
said “We have the car....that was quick!”
Might as well have 4 blokes in the car just
to make it as uncomfortable as possible…
I’ll ring Tim, he jumped at the chance and,
here we are, 4 virgins, up for a cracker
trip. We are all 40 something and the

together discovered 789, to make one
incredible, amazing, super team: Car

The team brings together veteran Bashers,
Virgin Bashers and returnee Bashers, all in
brightly coloured costumes.
Josh “Yoshi” Pugh, returns excitedly for his
5th Bash in 123 and has brought with him
from 2012, his West End loving friend, Tom
“Mario” Foristal, who was keen to stretch
his Bash legs one more time. 2015’s
Tom “formerly-Mario-but-thinking-nowDonkey-Kong” Ricketts, together with
Lauren “please-don’t-tell-anyone I’m a
physio-as-well-as-Luigi” Swan, return after
last year’s stellar efforts, and we can’t wait
to get over the starting line.
The myth, the man, the legend Alex
“Toad” Hardy, has severed family ties and
renounced his King-ly title to join the
group.
Former Suits and inseparable duo
Alana “Barra-Wario” Thurstans and Peta
“Waluigi” Nunn don the brown and pink
respectively after eagerly applying for a
position on the team almost 12 months
ago. They’ve promised big things and
have performed beautifully in the lead up
to the 2016 Bash thus far.
Finally, our fabulous member #9, Kate
“Princess Peach” Hobbs, the FIFO speciality
super-sub car of Car 1 to 9, brings the
team home. With a secret plan to take
over the Bash, we’re sure Kate will bring

plugs I’m sure!! “FARMER SMURF, FARMER
SMURF” guess he can’t hear us; hope we
don’t need him in a hurry!!!
Smurfette is back for her 9th year, “getting
better with age” she said!! Is Smurfette a
fine wine or an old cheese? You decide...
(I hope she doesn’t read this). It should
be a fun year with Pappa and Granny
Smurfs set to reunite, hopefully to spend
some quality time together (with the
blessings of Bob the Builder of course).
Farmer Smurf’s looking forward to more
intellectual conversation this year (when
and if he takes those ear plugs out) with
only one blonde on board. Vexy has heard
that Pappa Smurf is more into goats than
ghosts? Care to explain? Anyone?? Handy
Smurf will need to be on call for all those
Rolls Roycers that can’t get their tents
down, Farmer aint listening!!
Hefty and Brainy are busy discussing
Brains Vs Brawn in a rather loud
conversation…. now Vexy is looking for

Apparently it’s still a boy’s club expect to

skipping off into the sunset to the bar.
2015 for the first time, Colin and Damo
felt it necessary to pull Pete the Perfect

Bash, (we’ll try that again next year for his

These two may not be the prettiest
Princesses you’ve ever seen, and you
should hear them sing... it’s no better.
In “SVEN’S SLEIGH” they are joining in
for their first Bash adventure in 2016.
Originally they were setting out in a HZ
one tonner, but the princesses bit off more
than they could chew in three months. So
until they can talk without their mouths
full, this year they are attending with a HQ
Station Wagon.
After one year off, (Adam still sulking
he missed a year), Car 333 is back with
one new Hillbilly, Tom; our brother, the
husband of our sister, mother of our
nieces, aunty to our children. Darren and
Adam are proud to be part of such a close
family.
Fundraising is what it’s all about, raising
as much as we can for many children in
need, then a lot of fun at the end. Dusty
tracks and lots of sand is what we want,
but also children to share some gifts and
put a smile on their faces. The car itself is
ready to go, but as usual there will still be
things to do the night before the Bash.
To all the virgins, welcome and hope you
have a great time. To the chairman, staff

you put in to make it all happen. To the

fearsome Ford Falcon and 3 Bash Virgins
Wade, Shane and Matt.
Their veteran leader, Nigel, will lead them
on a fright filled fare across the country
side.
The origin of this crew, whilst strangely
dubious, guarantees their ability to
generate electricity whilst having an
absolute gas.
Not to forget that whenever these four
stop to make camp, they’ll be keeping the
world safe, one spirit at a time.
The Ghostbusters are looking forward to
two of the towns, Coffin Bay and Buckle
Boo.

As we know, the M*A*S*H 4077 was a
Mobile Army Surgical Hospital run by a
bunch of misfit doctors and nurses. Over
the years there have been a number of
different doctors and nurses on-board the
M*A*S*H ambulance and this year, 3 of
the regulars return, along with one new
member.
Robert and Janet have resurrected the old
MGA Whittles car and will be joining us
for the first time as Virgins.
This year the crew will consist of:

Never known for taking things seriously,

it be from bombings in Korea or sand
traps in the desert, and this year will be no
different. Amid the outward jocularity, the
Doctors will be tough competitors in their
always reliable ambulance.

ghoul catching group as you see them
vacuuming up the dirty demons.
So brace yourselves, and pray that you do
not need medical attention on the Bash,
because their medical expertise is not
nearly as good as their driving skills.

year. The occasionally favourite son-in-law
of Trevor, Mark will join the team for his
fourth year running.

up and ready for the 2016 Variety Bash.
Veteran Basher, Ian ‘Canoee’ Catford, on
his 23rd Bash, will again be steadfastly
behind the wheel of his favourite toy, Car
6, the legendary stretched AP5 Valiant
Ute. Joining him on most days will be ‘old
bloke’ Ian Cox and between them they
will show the young ones that they can
still keep up and, at times, set the pace.
In Car 666, the legendary stretched AP5
Valiant Station Wagon, on its 20th Bash,
will be Reinhold (Ron) Wehrmann and
Lachie Cox, who are scheming up any
number of tricks they can play this year.
Joining them will be two Virgin Bashers,
John (Reg) Barry and Paul Lewis, who,
whilst newcomers to Variety, are not
newcomers to creating mischief and
having a good time.
The teams are looking forward to another
great Bash, but you will need to watch this
space, as to date, they are holding back on
announcing their theme for this year!

I, Christopher Simkin, the initiator of the
group and owner of the car, had been
thinking of doing this for many years.
Back in high school a friend’s father
was on the Bash and he used to talk
about all the fun they had. As I run my
own business, I would get calls about
sponsoring different events and other
things, so, about 5 years ago, I decided
to do the Variety Bash! In 2014, I talked
to my father, Steve Simkin, about doing
the Bash with me and started to look
for a car and what a find!!! The two front
end EH Holden was for sale and after the
purchase, two others joined us, Wade
Simpson and the Father-in-law Michael
Castle.
First to giving the car its’ new chapter in life
was a new colour - yellow to green, that’s
how we came up with the name & theme
Since 1992 Carmine, Diane and Cafe96
have thoroughly enjoyed life with the
Variety family thanks to Tom & Fairy
Matters conning us into the infamous
Bash.
2016 will be our 25th consecutive Bash in
the Cafe96! WOW, where did that quarter
of a century go?

The new Queen Bee’s that have joined
have given us a new perspective on
fundraising with garden parties and
raffles. The Queens are keen as long as
the drinks are in the fridge, all’s well.
Cattle, sheep & raffles are the main money
raisers this year. We hope to top our result
from last year. We are looking forward
to the road trip to the E.P and to see its
wonderful sights.

Car BOB will be going on its 11th Bash
this year and is still going as strong as
ever, with a couple of minor repairs and a
new diff housing which has replaced the
old one that was welded up last Bash by
the fabulous MW’s. Not that the old one
would have had any problems – it was
brilliantly repaired by Daryl and Scott,
but we don’t want to give these guys any
more work than we have to on our next
Bash.
The “Bob the Builder” theme has been
going for 16 years now and is still a
popular theme for the younger kids.
Our fearless leader, the Veteran, Trevor,
is going on his 20th Bash this year and is
still as accommodating as ever –and no,
that wine glass has not been glued to his
hand…
Bruce has a 5 year Certificate on his wall
now and is as keen as ever to organise
building projects for as many years as he
can drive a Bash car.
Lyn, our beloved Wendy is back for her
13th Bash and we would really be lost
without her great secretarial and treasury
skills.
We have a Virgin with us this year. KG,
an old West Coast mate of our Bash
Chairman, has told us that he will willingly
open all the gates, clean out the car every

Last, and in this case least, is the other
Irishman, Alan Fenelon. He too hails from
Dublin although from the right side of
the river; not that you’d guess. While not
leading Minetec’s commercial efforts
toward global domination, this selfaccredited guru is a bit fond of yoga. He’s
not very good at it and is lazy, and there’s
no truth to his yoga interest being less
esoteric and more Lycrateric. How will this
help in the Bash? It won’t, but we have to
make him sound interesting as he is not.
It will end in tears but it might have some
voyeuristic appeal; like the way some
people get a kick out of watching natural
disasters happen or misfortune befalling
others.

Two Irish men and a Canuck get into a
car…
With a worryingly low amount of
preparation, an infantile understanding
of the inner workings of the internal
combustion engine and a rather cavalier
approach all up, this trio of senior
managers have got a wakeup call coming.
For some bizarre reason, someone allowed
the Canadian to decide that they’d be
decked out in full ice hockey regalia; such a
useful addition to a bush Bash in Australia!
So, just who are these intrepid and naïve
“accident looking for a place to happen”
team? …read on.
Well the first Irishman is Rory Linehan, a
native Dubliner from the wrong side of
the river. Rory works in the Codan group
as well as heading up Minetec in WA. Rory
has worked for such illustrious firms as
McLaren and Boeing in the past and so
you’d think he’d be all over this. He won’t.
Next is the native of Canada, Paul Sangster

The Bubbles Birds are back. We will have
Iots of bubbles again this year and we
may even get out of our PJ’s once or twice
in 2016. Then again, maybe not! The PJ’s
and dressing gowns are pretty comfy. Last
year’s conditions did play havoc on our
uggies and slippers, but we are expecting
a lot more sandy and smooth tracks this
year (you can only live in hope), so maybe
they will survive a little better.
This will be our third Bash and we would
like to thank our many supporters who
have helped us raise the much needed
funds for this very worthy cause. It has
been a hard slog selling our major raffle
tickets, but we do have fantastic families
and friends who support us in many ways,
including buying lots of tickets and helping
out at the sausage sizzles we also hold.
We are Iooking forward to the Pt Lincoln
start and especially the Clare finish. Great

2nd Bash will be an achievement. lt will
certainly not be like her first Bash in Car

It was on last year’s Bash, that Virgin
Taff went for a drink with Canoee and
Bob Pilgrim and was informed the next
morning that she had, in fact, agreed to
purchase Bob’s car. Having bought the
best Bash car going, Taff set about telling
her husband what she’d done. After his
initial shocked reaction, Kev was keen.
A drink with mate Nedd and wife Lisa
brought on partners in the car and in

The Blue Ford LTD has made it back for
a 3rd year in a row, with a new team
behind the wheel. The car being passed
like a family heirloom to a new round of
Virgin Bashers. Our team of four came
together with a keenness to give back
this year. A whimsical desire that we
initially struggled to quantify. Sure,
selling fundraiser chocolates or helping
the elderly cross the road helps a little. But
how we could be involved on a grander
scale, and have some fun along the way
was the big question. The Variety Bash
was the answer.
Early March we had a partially formed
team, no car (seems essential), no theme,
and really, no idea. We did however have
plenty of passion, opinions and naivety.
Fundraising, understanding the Bash, car
preparation and the laundry list of to-do
items meant some hard days ahead. But
we have worked together to get there.
Inspiring charitable giving is 80% emotion
and 20 % rational, and the best way to get
to someone’s emotions is to tell a story.
Variety has a great story, we are now part
of it, and are proud to be contributing our
time and energy to such a great cause.

who joined this world in March.
So no Big Ted means no Play School.
Humpty, Jemima and Little Ted can’t do
it without Big Ted, so what to do, what to
do?
Do we go back to being Knights? No, we
have had too many hard knights on the
BASH already!
Seeing Moo & Kim won’t go in the car
needed for Little Ted’s theme idea, it won’t
be that one!
So what can three of us be? Think, think,
think!
The Three Wise Monkeys! That’s it, what
else could be more appropriate for this
team?
So we just have to decide who it is that
gets to be blind all week, who can go all
week without speaking their mind and
who doesn’t listen to a thing the team
says anyway!
You will just have to wait for the BASH to
find out who is ‘Hear No’, who is ‘See No’
and who is ‘Speak No’
Oh, and of course they are all angelic so
there is definitely no ‘evil’ involved with
this team.

Years ago, we were bachelors and virgins,
now we’re just Virgins, ready for action
on our first Bash. Like the morning after
a B & S Ball, we’re not too sure what to
expect, so will try and come prepared for
anything and probably be prepared for
nothing!
We are certainly not sure about fun stops
and definitely haven’t a clue about Bash
Bucks!
No doubt all will be revealed.
Having invested our faith in a 4 times
Bash Mobile (The Ram Car) we hope that
we can put the old girl on autopilot and
get us around the track without too much
drama – stay close MW’s, we may need
your assistance....
How delighted we were at the completion
of the 2015 Bash as the Rolls Royce came
through with flying colours. We would like
to announce that ‘we are back’, with more
style and more etiquette than probably
has been seen before.
We have spent our year wisely,
establishing etiquette, defining
deportment and polishing protocol, and I
am proud to say the family has surpassed
in a sterling manner.
Our family of course, has Kings and
Queens, Princess’s, Dukes and Duchesses,
complete with all the trappings of
nobility. Royal robes, crown jewels,
staffs and sceptres will be the force de
rigueur. Even the royal corgis will be in
attendance.
Tongues will be wagging and rumours
flourishing, such is the burden of the royal
family, and surely a scandal or two will be
unearthed. I urge you, my loyal subjects,
to not believe everything you hear.
Finally, let us hope that all goes well this
year as it is Knowlton’s 20th Bash and
this magnificent expedition is just as well
enjoyed as 2015 with the Royal Family
rightfully victorious.

wander through the jungles of the West
Coast, or wherever Rambo and Co. directs

If the tracks of this year are half as good

‘Out of this
World’
Variety’s Annual Themed Ball, fuelled the
rocket and blasted off to the moon for
a night of great music, wine and food at
the Adelaide Convention Centre, after
exceeding the milestone of 2,000 people
last year, our supporters and guests took
this year’s Ball “Out of this World” with
2,460 guests joining in the party. This
is an outstanding effort and we thank
everyone who bought a ticket and joined
us at Adelaide’s largest private ball.
The Adelaide Convention Centre team
of chefs delivered an outstanding three
course meal accompanied by the fine Tim
Adams Wines with guests enjoying the
amazing entertainment with the line-up
including Upton Hills, Ciaran Gribbin,
the former INXS singer and his band and
Audio box to take us into the night.
With something to interest everyone
and a great cause the silent auction
again was well supported and the main
auction included fine dining, luxury yacht
getaways and VIP packages for Variety’s
own Motoring Events. This all combined
to raise a phenomenal $284,000 net
bringing the total raised since its
inception to nearly $2.8million net.
This event would not be possible without
the enormous support we receive from
the Adelaide Convention Centre, the

VARIETY V2 MOTORCYCLE RUN
The inaugural Variety V2 Motorcycle Run
took place in 2008 and seven years on
the event has raised over $1.65 million
net to directly benefit South Australian
children in need. Each year the riders
travel a different route and areas travelled
have included the Flinders Ranges, the
Grampians and Daylesford regions, the
Riverland, South West NSW, the wine
regions of South Australia, the Great Ocean
Road and the Victorian High Country.
The V2 Motorcycle Run is designed to
attract motorbike enthusiasts, catering
for both experienced and inexperienced
riders. This four day luxury cruise requires
no organisation on their part with the
emphasis on interesting roads, fabulous
scenery, great food and wine and of
course, as with all Variety events, fun and
entertainment.
2016 V2 MOTORCYCLE
RUN
8 – 11 October 2016
The 2016 event departs from Direct
Home Timber & Hardware on North East
Road, Windsor Gardens and travels to
Eudunda for morning tea, then through to
Peterborough for lunch and Port Augusta
for two nights before travelling to Moonta
Bay for night three.
Highlights of the ride will include dining
at wineries and restaurants en route, an

VARIETY 4WD CHALLENGE
The 2016 Variety SA 4WD Challenge
promised breathtaking scenery, some of the
best tracks in the country and wonderful
camaraderie and delivered in spades.
The Australian High Country was chosen as
a ‘destination event’ as it offered so much
diversity to the 4WD entrants who all really
enjoyed the challenge of the terrain and the
overall experience.
Chairman Joe Walker and ‘track master’ David
Ahola had prepared an incredible 7-day
journey and with meticulous planning they
beat the fickle alpine weather and managed
to deliver all the highlights. This preparation
and planning allowed the entrants to enjoy
a seamless adventure despite routes being
shuffled and redesigned due to inclement
weather.
Highlights included Lake Hume, Tom
Groggin Station – real Man from Snowy River
country, Mount Pinnabar and Mount Gibbo
tracks, a ride on the chairlift at Thredbo,
Native Dog Flat, the iconic Blue Duck Inn,
finishing with the paddle steamer at Echuca
and much, much more.
The 4WD Challenge guests received the
exceptional standards of catering thank you
to Steve Cooling and his team and to Peter
Lloyd and his team for delivering all the
comforts of home including hot showers and
toilets.
Raising much needed money for children
in need in South Australia is especially
important and this year’s event raised a
mighty $425,000 (net). Congratulations to all!
2017 4WD CHALLENGE
25-31 March 2017
The 2017 event is closer to home uncovering
secrets from Port Pirie to the Barossa Valley
with some amazing tracks across private
property and restricted access planned,
and will be an event not to be missed. We
encourage you to get involved on this
unique event in an area many of you may
have simply passed through.
