CHANDLER FAMILY
of ANDOVER
William (1) Chandler, with his Wife,Annis,( surname either
Weld or Alcock)
and four children, was in Roxbury, 1637. He is supposed
to have been a tanner. He held an estate of 22 acres and owned land on
Shawm~
the corner of Bartlett street ( or avenue) and
owned
Avenue, Roxbury,
later by Samuel Guild. Wm. died of consumption, ,It'eb. 26,1641.

Bishopy , England, and of Ipswich and Roxbury, in this
colony. In six
years the house and land of Chandler were given to Dane,
who had paid
the deceased husband's debts and brought up the children.' Dane was buried,Sept. 14, 1658, and Annis took for a third husband, John
of\Sudbury, Aug. 9, 1660. John's wife, Bridget, had died,

William (2) Chandler and wife Mary Dane, had their home near Billy
Foster's, and later moved down to the Billerica Road near the Vale. He
was a brick maker, 1683. He sold
a pasture and meadow to Joseph Ballard,
which lay back of the Homer Foster place in the crook of' the river. He
kept an inn on the Ipsv.'ich Road to Billerica .. (Back of the Seminary,·:~ it
called
is nOW/Highland Road, I think, and goes by Sylvester Abbott's:) It was
probably the old Ballard Tavern, later , on Rattlesnake Hill Road- the
Allen place,-as Chandler's Bridge is dovin there. A meadow of 100 acres
part
he gave to Tom and Philemon, and they were south of Ballard's. One/was
near the

Some thought that he was an imposter. He visited his sister, who
was 20 years younger-probably Pollj:-who married Dave Foster and
was living in Andover. She did not recall him very well and was
Very cool toward him. Sh:e sent him to see his mother who had married Daniel Parker
and lived in Reading. Later Polly repented
and tried to find him but without success. He did not go to see
his mother.
Another tale is that aftgr leaving college he went
to Philadelphia and worked in a bank. ~ere he married a lady of
fashion, and brought her north to visi~ his family. They seemed
of such humbl~station, Sam and his wife did not stop, except
long enough t,~ake a cup of tea.

Billerica as a blacksmith. Wm. (5) was in hot water with his uncle James~4)

Stevens(5) liued in Ashford,Ct. and was sent back to Andover- or came
back, and died here in the almshouse.
