Sound & Spirit A MULTI-GENERATIONAL CHOIR PRESENTS songs for the earth Sunday June 1, 2014 Natick High School 4:30 pm WELCOME TO “SONGS FOR THE EARTH” Welcome to “Songs for the Earth,” our fifth concert, making us exactly two-and-a-half years old! This concert boasts two new elements to our show, visual arts and activism—two long-awaited dreams come to fruition. January of 2014 marked the passing of the great civil rights and environmental activist, Pete Seeger. His passionate commitment to the earth afforded today’s program even more relevance as we link our art to activism. Today, we celebrate our cherished “pale blue dot,” our “blue boat home,” our beautiful earth and one of its great champions, longtime Natick resident Pat Conaway, creator of the Big Heart, Little Feet organization. Serendipity guided our semester, beginning when an anonymous patron mailed us a beautiful letter extolling our mission and making a generous donation, our first deposit toward sustainability. Next, many of our members enjoyed an outing to Young @ Heart, a chorus of hard-rocking senior citizens (average age 81) whose 2007 documentary helped inspire the creation of Sound & Spirit. In April, Linda Tighe, licensed nutritionist and second soprano extraordinaire, offered a two-week cleanse, reminding us that the cleaner we eat, the less garbage we create, the better we feel. Inspiring so many of us to better health, Linda kindly donated her proceeds back to S&S, another step toward our sustainability. A semester of many fun firsts, we also gigged out at Earth Day, as well as The Relay for Life! Early in the semester, the organizer of Natick’s Earth Day, Pat Conaway (grandfather, father-in-law and husband to some special choir members), visited with S&S. In his unassuming and compassionate way, Pat explained his quest to make Natick the first trash-free community in Massachusetts. His wider efforts and intentions range throughout the Metrowest area: cleaning up trails, waterways and establishing “Buddy Bins” all over Natick and surrounding towns. Called to promote the concept of leaving a smaller footprint, Pat educates folks on gentler living and on activism. Trash and littering, Pat explains, is symptomatic of deeper societal struggles. Trash carelessly dumped on roadsides and trails are indicative of a high-consumption society. He is quick to share his personal mantra, hoping folks might adopt the three kindnesses: Kindness to self. Kindness to others. Kindness to the earth. Throughout his career as a teacher and beyond, Pat has worked with at-risk youths, creating service opportunities and outdoor experiences that connect folks to the earth and to a sense of something greater than self. Last year, this humble, hardworking man received the Shining Light Award from NEF (Natick Education Foundation) and this year, he has been named Natick’s Senior Man of the Year. Quietly inspiring, Pat hopes his work also promotes “more compassion, less blame.” Want to join Pat on this quest? He just needs “20 more volunteers” to make Natick the first truly trash-free community. A special thanks to our talented members who, inspired by Pat, offer a new modality to Sound & Spirit, the visual arts! See program notes for more information on the creation of our beautiful vines, our giant earth and our glorious photo montage! Thanks to our hardworking Board, inspiring Artistic Committee and countless volunteers for lending us your time and talent to make this show possible! Motivated by the great generosity we have received, and inspired by our music with a message, we offer “Songs for the Earth.” Channeling Pete Seeger, we hope our art inspires you to activism, and we encourage you to go meet Pat in the lobby and offer him your feet! It was through this dedicated group that Sound & Spirit was created and with support from TCAN, Sound & Spirit began in January 2012. With hopes of 30 members or so arriving for the first season, Sound & Spirit was pleasantly surprised to perform its inaugural concert with 50 members. Our membership has grown steadily, currently we have 93 performers and a number of dedicated non-performers. “Songs for the Earth” is our fifth performance. CLAIRE MACKAY Choreographer Native to South Africa, Claire studied physical education at Witswatersrand University with a focus in special needs. A life-long lover of the arts, Claire first toured at the tender age of 10 with South Africa’s Brick Hill/Burke production of Annie. While Claire loves to perform, she discovered her true passion on the other side of the curtain, directing and choreographing her first musical production in 8th grade. For the last 15 years, Claire has directed, produced and choreographed musical productions for all ages. ALICE MACKAY Choreographer Alice is a senior at Dover-Sherborn High School. In September, Alice will be attending NYU’s Tisch School for the Performing Arts. Alice studied Rhythmic Gymnastics, Dance and Drama in South Africa and was honored to represent South Africa in Rhythmic Gymnastics, winning gold at two international competitions. Recently, Alice directed and choreographed the Dover-Sherborn middle school production of Epic Fail in the METG Middle School Drama Festival. The play was awarded gold. She is currently involved with choreography for the Dover-Sherborn school productions. This is Alice’s fifth Sound & Spirit concert. MARGARET UMBSEN Production Stage Manager Margaret has been active in technical theater and music for over sixteen years. Theater highlights as Stage Manager are Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (Apollinaire Theatre), Tigers Be Still (Zeitgiest Stage Company), The Music Man (Hiram, Ohio) and Tennessee Williams Theatre Festival in Provincetown, MA. Music highlights include Les Indes Galantes (Boston Baroque), Odetta and Dar Williams tour concerts here in MetroWest, and Sisterspace Weekend in Maryland. She is happy to rejoin this lively and fun-loving group. VISUAL ELEMENTS THE VINES Our concert mission is to bring greater awareness and education to our community with regard to what we can do to take care of our earth, preserving it for future generations. Our “vines” installation represents our collective mission and intergenerational commitment to preserving this beautiful planet. Designed by Sound & Spirit soprano, Linda Tighe, our vines were created by the many hands of Sound & Spirit members and their families from upcycled materials. THE EARTH Sound & Spirit tenor, and talented carpenter, Tom Rowley, created the earth for our concert today. Inspired by our theme, Pat Conaway’s call-to-action and the opportunity to use his “own two hands”, Tom constructed the 8-foot earth, adding another dimension to our performance and finding our visual “wow”. THE PHOTO MONTAGE Natick High School sophomore, Abby Fournier, created our photo montage for today’s show. Collecting photos from Sound & Spirit members and their families was no small task. We are so grateful for this effective celebration of our beautiful earth and the dramatic invitation to serve. “SONGS FOR THE EARTH” LET THE RIVER RUN Featuring: Jenn D’Antonio Linda Burgoon, Cheri Clark, Lauren Fishman, Joanmarie Goodwin, Steve Leavey, Heather Levinson, Scott Neal Reilly and Dave Schelleng Popular singer-songwriter Carly Simon wrote the film score for Mike Nichols’ 1988 film Working Girl, featuring “Let the River Run”. Simon composed “Let the River Run,” to complement the movie’s opening sequence of images, including the Hudson River. She later said that Walt Whitman’s poetry had inspired her. “From the beginning, I thought it should be a hymn with a jungle beat. To me, there was something very grand yet jungle-like about the story of these naïve secretaries going every day into the Wall Street jungle.” With its rousing lyrics and sweeping up-tempo beat, “Let the River Run” continues to inspire us, urging “Let the dreamers wake the nation / Come, the New Jerusalem”! We can think of no better exhortation to open our concert. FOR THE BEAUTY OF THE EARTH The text for this choir favorite comes from the four-verse refrain poem by little-known Victorian poet Folliott S. Pierpont, who wrote it after gazing over the English countryside near Bath. Pierpont’s verses, first published in 1864, thank the Lord for many blessings: the beauty of the earth, the beauty of each hour of the day and of the night, the joy of human love, each perfect gift. “For the Beauty of the Earth” became a favorite hymn of Thanksgiving. In 1994, British composer John Rutter set the reverent words of this traditional Anglican hymn to new music.Today we sing Rutter’s fresh and moving anthem with its stirring, lyrical accompaniment and its eminently sing-able lines - it’s a great choral sing! STANDING ON THE SHOULDERS Featuring: The family members of Sound & Spirit who represent the multiple generations of our choir and who are connected as children, parents, grandparents, cousins, spouses and siblings ... Written and sung by Joyce Rouse on the CD Love Large, “Standing on the Shoulders” reminds us that we owe a debt of gratitude to all our teachers as well as their teachers. Rouse had environmental and suffragist heroes in mind when she penned this inspirational song. Believing that songs are a powerful tool for change, Rouse has adopted the slogan “Helping Heal the Planet One Song at a Time.” She further explains, “Songs are melodies with a message attached—and they have a way of getting inside of you and sticking. Only by relearning and respecting the critical basics of living in harmony with nature can we hope to continue the human race and live sustainably on the planet.” THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND Featuring: Scott Neal Reilly and Beatrice Wood Helena Bouchereau, Shayla Gulati, Genevieve Morrison and Zoe Napurano Gerry Bucci, Cheri Clark, Abby Fournier, Heather Levinson, and Sheila Pogarian Written and first sung by Woody Guthrie, the American folk anthem “This Land is Your Land” has been sung by everyone from Bruce Springsteen to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. After walking, hitching, and riding the rails across the country during the Depression, Guthrie composed “This Land is Your Land” in 1940 as a populist response to “God Bless America.” Guthrie most likely chose the tune from “When the World’s on Fire” sung by the Carter Family on a 1930 Gospel recording. Although Guthrie recorded “This Land” in 1944, Folkways Records waited until 1951 to release it. Guthrie’s fellow traveler, musician and activist Pete Seeger, who died this past January, sang “This Land” more than any other American singer. As we celebrate the Earth today with the words “this land is your land / this land is my land” we honor Pete’s legacy, heeding his message that it is we who are responsible for preserving it. AIN’T NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH Featuring: Emily Brame, Dante D’Antonio, Bailey Gerson, Ben Kaplan, Julia Leavey, Jordan McLaughlin, Liam Neal Reilly, and Carly Zirlen Written in 1966 by Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson for the Motown label, “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” hit Billboard’s Top Twenty as a 1967 single recorded by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, climbing to number three on the R&B charts. This version, a carefree, danceable, romantic love song, became the signature duet between Gaye and Terrell. Three years later, Diana Ross grabbed her first solo number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” earning a Grammy nomination. In 1999, the Gaye-Terrell version was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, coming to be regarded as one of the most important records ever released by Motown. BLUE SKIES Featuring: Steve Leavey and Linda Tighe Prolific and beloved American composer Irving Berlin composed “Blue Skies” as a last-minute addition in 1926 to the Rodgers and Hart musical Betsy. With its “Bluebird of Happiness” as a symbol of cheer, the song met with instant success on its opening night. Star Belle Baker had to return more than two dozen times as the audience demanded repeat encores! Al Jolson sang it in the movie The Jazz Singer, making it one of the first songs to be featured in a “talkie.” Crossing genres, “Blue Skies” became a major western swing, a country favorite and a classic jazz standard. Enjoy the playful scat! LET IT GO Featuring: Jennifer D’Antonio and Bianca D’Antonio “Let it Go,” performed by American actress and singer Idina Menzel in her role as Queen Elsa, struck a powerful chord with the audience of Disney’s 2013 animated feature Frozen. “Let It Go” won the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 86th Academy Awards. It also became Menzel’s first single to reach the top ten, making her the first Tony Award recipient to do so. “Let It Go” gives voice to Elsa, who, ostracized by her subjects for her magical abilities, retreats to the mountains where she is free to use her power to create a magnificent ice castle. Elsa was originally slotted as a villainous roll, but upon hearing the song “Let It Go,” the writers reportedly rewrote the part, making Elsa a more complex character as a reluctant hero. Written by husband-and-wife duo Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, “Let It Go” has been described as “an incredible anthem of liberation” by Entertainment Weekly columnist Marc Snetiker. A song of liberation, it is nearly impossible to resist singing this evocative tune! SO, DON’T! Join us! And, all of the kids in the audience will be invited to come down in front of the stage and join Sound & Spirit for a sing-a-long! HAPPY Featuring: Kyle Chamberlain, Dylan LaVallee and Harley Spring From the opening bass and drum interplay this song sounds, well, “Happy.” Singer-songwriter Pharrell Williams dares anyone to bring him down in this soulful tune from the soundtrack of the animated movie Despicable Me 2, which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song in a movie. “Happy” has already reached number one on international song charts. The friendly warmth of Williams’ voice and the catchy chorus are infectious. We invite you to sing and dance as the spirit moves you while the Sound & Spirit teens show you what it means to be…well, happy! BLACK WATER Featuring: Chris Letizia “Black Water,” a song by the American band The Doobie Brothers, featuring singer-songwriter Patrick Simmons on lead vocals. Simmons, a lifelong lover of Delta blues, credits his first visit to New Orleans for the song’s lyrics and sound. “When I got down there,” he said, “the way of life and vibe really connected with me and the roots of my music.” Introducing a bluegrass sound to traditional rock, the song is characterized by the melodious a cappella section with lyrics that are the most well known of the entire song: “I’d like to hear some funky Dixieland / Pretty mama, come and take me by the hand.” Another irresistible melody, we guess you are going to want to sing-a-long. C’mon along. Pretend no one else is listening! INTERMISSION WITH MY OWN TWO HANDS / THREE LITTLE BIRDS Featuring: Brian Kenny and Lisa LaVallee Abby Fournier, Fiona O’Neill and Peter Rodriguez Harley Spring on the Ukelele Celebrating Pat Conaway’s invitation to serve, this is our message song! “With My Own Two Hands,” a single from singer-songwriter Ben Harper’s 2003 release Diamonds on the Inside, focuses on how a single person can change the world. After it came out, European radio stations regularly played this song, which features an up-tempo reggae groove. Harper’s simple yet passionate lyrics show that each of us can make a positive impact on the world by using our “own two hands” and nothing more. Enjoy our ridiculously talented Brian Kenny’s mash up, featuring Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds” Join in and…“don’t worry about a thing, cause every little thing is gonna be alright!” Thanks to Abby Fournier for creating our marvelous photo montage. THE RIVER OF DREAMS Featuring: Brian Kenny and Chris Letizia Like most creative people, singer-songwriter Billy Joel often gets creative ideas in dreams, but usually he can’t remember them after he wakes up. Not so with “The River of Dreams,” the title track and first single from his 1993 album River of Dreams. Oddly, Joel, who identifies himself as an atheist, tried NOT to write it because he describes it as a “gospel song” loaded with biblical imagery, most tellingly the river because, as he says, “There’s baptizing in a river, and you have to cross the river—people are getting dunked in the river and there’s rivers of blood.”Joel’s story illustrates the power of dreams, of the subconscious, the creative spirit to grab hold and move us in ways we might never have imagined. SHENANDOAH One of the most beautiful and enduring melodies in the Western Folk idiom, the appeal of “Shenandoah” is abundantly clear in the hundreds of arrangements it has inspired. According to one source, the word “Shenandoah,” roughly translated, means “daughter of the stars,” but the origins of both the song and lyrics are unclear. American folklorist Alan Lomax suggested that “Shenandoah” grew from a 19th-century sea shanty or work song with the chorus sung by sailors, possibly composed by French-Canadian voyageurs traveling down the Missouri River. “Shenandoah” resembles a typical “windlass and capstan” shanty, which is slow-paced and often has nostalgic lyrics for the sailors, who yearn for home. Today we sing American composer James Erb’s arrangement of “Shenandoah,” which sings of loss and longing, evoking the tender cadence of moving water in the particularly striking ending fugue. WAKE ME UP Featuring: Dylan LaVallee and Gwyneth Neal Reilly After years of critically acclaimed and commercially successful releases in the electronic music genre, twenty-three-year-old Swedish DJ and music producer Avicii stunned the genre’s fans when he premiered “Wake Me Up” in a performance that included live instruments and singing. The single, released on Avicii’s 2013 debut album True, features vocals and lyrics by American soul singer Aloe Blacc and acoustic guitar by Mike Einziger of the band Incubus. Blacc’s citizen-of-the-world voice combined with a genre-defying mix of electronic dance music and country have propelled this hit to the top of dozens of charts worldwide. The chorus, lyrically simple but catchy, makes a case for the power of dreams as a means for learning about ourselves: “So wake me up when it’s all over / when I’m wiser and I’m older / All this time I was finding myself / And I didn’t know I was lost.” AN AMERICAN HYMN Featuring: Kate Leavey and Juliet Mackay “An American Hymn”, the main theme song for the 1981 miniseries, was based on East of Eden, the epic novel John Steinbeck considered his Magnum Opus. The song appeared on Placido Domingo’s Perhaps Love album released in 1981 and was made into a CD in 1990 and re-released in 2008. Known for his strong voice and rich tone, Domingo was heralded as one of “The Three Tenors” with Luciano Pavarotti and Jose Carrreras. Domingo has also taken on conducting opera and concert performances and is currently the general director of the Los Angeles Opera. This secular hymn sings of the joy of connectedness and the healing power to which nature is constantly inviting us. Perhaps new to this sweeping Americana ballad are its words danced to life by our guest ballerina, Juliet Mackay. JOY TO THE WORLD Featuring: Ryan Kaplan, Nick Griffin and Peter Shields Popularly known by its opening words “Jeremiah was a bullfrog,” “Joy to the World” is a song written in 1970 by Hoyt Axton and made famous by the band Three Dog Night. Though Axton had the chorus and melody worked out, when it came time to write the opening verses, he spouted nonsense as a placeholder until he could write proper lyrics. Instead, “Jeremiah was a bullfrog / was a good friend of mine / Never understood a single word he said / but I helped him drink his wine,” got recorded only to enter rock history. A choir favorite, we hope you feel our joy! BLUE BOAT HOME Born from singer-songwriter Peter Mayer’s love of the Welsh hymn-tune “Hyfrydol”(meaning “cheerful”), the song “Blue Boat Home” refers to our life on this earth as a grand seafaring journey. Mayer, a contemporary folk artist, took some rhythmic liberties with the melody of “Hyfrydol.” The original Welsh hymn, written by Rowland Prichard in 1844, appears in a number of Christian hymnals in various arrangements. Our kids and teens combine to bring you their “cheerful” rendition of this reverent melody. CUPS (ALSO KNOWN AS WHEN I’M GONE) Featuring: Bianca D’Antonio, Abigail Frey and Holland Kaye “Cups,” a song popularized by singer-actress Anna Kendrick of Pitch Perfect and currently on Billboard’s Hot 100, takes its name from a percussion game played with cups. The song, however, began life as a 1931 bluegrass tune about dying—“Will You Miss Me When I’m Gone?—written by A.P. Carter of the Carter Family, an American family whose influence on folk music spans three decades and includes Woodie Guthrie’s “This Land is Your Land” from earlier in our concert. The modified lyrics that Kendrick sings, along with the addition of the Cups rhythm, come from the British band Lulu and the Lampshades, whose video languished for two years on the internet until Anna Burden recorded herself singing and performing it before posting it to the social sharing site Reddit where it went viral. Anna Kendrick became obsessed with the tune and cups, and the rest is music history. HEAL THE WORLD Featuring: Rhonda Garvin Conaway, Lisa LaVallee, Linda Burgoon, Brian Kenny, Patrick Conaway, Robyn Spinazola, Beatrice Wood, Amy Bruns, Abby Fournier and final soloist, Elizabeth Barrett The sixth single released from Michael Jackson’s 1991 album Dangerous, “Heal the World” is the one song that Jackson was proudest about writing and producing. In fact, Jackson took the title for his foundation, “Heal the World Foundation,” which he established in 1992 to improve conditions for children worldwide. The organization was also meant to teach children how to help others. Though meant to focus our efforts on the welfare of children, the anthem’s refrain “make it a better place for you and for me and the entire human race” are equally true for our care of the Earth, our “blue boat home” upon which we all tenously reside. Thank you, Linda and Conrad Burgoon, for creating beautiful sign for our choir to experience! Congratulations to Sound & Spirit on its Continued Success! More Compassion, Less Blaming In recent years I’ve noticed a pattern in our public discourse. Lots of polarization, “attack ads,” and blaming. Now we’re at a crossroads in our public conversations. Either we take a few moments to reflect on our own shortcomings (and privileges), or we just continue to “lash out” at the other folks. Pretty simple. I pick up a lot of trash in my community and a couple of others. There are many folks out there who are perhaps ignorant or miseducated. They toss trash from their automobiles at night or leave litter everywhere on public fields, trails, roadways and parks. Many people claim (with justification) that they’re slobs, fools, or bad citizens. I view it another way: based on the items they toss out, it looks like a lot of sadness, lost hope, escape...caffeine, whiskey, beer, vodka, nip bottles, cigarettes, lottery tickets, fast food, styrofoam. If you’re lucky enough to be raised in a family/culture that values each other, your community, and education, do you think you’d end up doing this? I strongly doubt it. So the next question: what do we do? My hunch is that we reach out. We try to find ways to engage these folks who are disconnected from us, from our community and the earth. Not all that simple, I realize. Many are fairly entrenched in their destructive ways. Sadly many wouldn’t even admit that what they’re doing is destructive. Raising awareness is never easy. But it can be done. Come join me - we can do this.
